La storia della fotografia, come tutte le storie umane, spesso dimentica o sottostima persone, tecniche o regioni geografiche. Una di queste aree sfuocate ha attirato molti anni fa la mia attenzione, complice uno splendido album rilegato in marocchino rosso capitato nelle mie mani. Nell'album trovai raccolte diverse decine di stampe all'albumina di grande formato collezionate da un ignoto viaggiatore italiano (conosciamo solo le iniziali....) durante le sue escursioni in Oriente. Le stampe erano numerate e firmate e molte avevano anche la descrizione del soggetto. Cominciai a fare qualche ricerca sui nomi per me sconosciuti e poco a poco mi si schiuse davanti un mondo avventuroso e appassionante, fatto di viaggiatori, pionieri della fotografia, intrighi nella corte Ottomana, conquiste di territori lontani.... I nomi ricorrenti in quel mio primo contatto erano Sebah & Joaillier, Berggreen, Abdullah Freres, Andriomenos. Erano solo nomi esotici allora, adesso sono diventati per me persone vere, con la loro storia e il loro lavoro, sopravvissuto in modo a volte incredibile.
