The Dry Movie Review
Tumblr media
Aaron Falk returns to his drought-stricken hometown to attend a tragic funeral. But his return opens a decades-old wound - the unsolved death of a teenage girl.
I know that the critical consensus was positive for The Dry, but I can’t say that I felt similarly. I had not yet read the book, but planned to change this after watching the film so I could compare the two, so this review is based on the film alone.
The Dry is visually appealing, and the cast is of course phenomenal. What I love most about films such as this one is that they are often a great vehicle for strong character work, and this is no exception. The depth that this film allows, furthered by the strong flashback scenes, is remarkable for character development. The most engaging aspects of The Dry are the relationships between all of the characters, particularly due to the tension exuded by Falk’s return to his hometown and what happened when he was a teenager. There is nothing more compelling than the back and forth that occurs between conflicting personalities with various suspect agendas. The actors portray their onscreen personas brilliantly. I also enjoyed the burgeoning friendship between Aaron (Eric Bana) and Sergeant Raco (Keir O’Donnell) as they attempted to discover the truth of the supposed murder-suicide.
Unfortunately, whilst I very much enjoyed the character work, I couldn’t help but be become more disappointed with the narrative the further the story progressed. This was particularly evident towards the end of the film, however I also felt that many of the supposed clues and plot twists were completely obvious early on. I have no idea if this is due to the shift from book to film, or common to both, but I could tell where most of the story was going almost immediately. This would not have been terrible on its own, but the fact of the matter is the end became a major letdown when revelations occurred that I just felt weren’t at all believable, and the person I was watching it with was also verbalising this as we watched it. The exception to this is the companion narrative set in the past, which I think was handled beautifully.
Did I enjoy my viewing? Yes, of course, there was a lot I liked about The Dry, but the essential elements of the crime/thriller narrative that were ‘revealed’ by its end just didn’t do it for me at all. Much of it felt out of place and didn’t make sense when compared to other aspects of the plot itself. We found ourselves looking back at things that had occurred earlier in the film and trying to understand how any of it made sense to end in that way.

Understanding Artists' Books
The Paul D. Fleck Library & Archives holds over 5,000 artists' books - and the collection continues to grow through a combination of donations and purchases every year.
But what is an artists' book?
Well, part of the (usually exciting) challenge of artists' books is that they're difficult to define. For the Emily Carr University Art and Design library, the artists' book collection "encompasses books conceived, crafted, published, produced or altered by an artist, designer or collective with the intention of creating an independent art work ." But for the Smithsonian Library, "[a]n artist’s book is a medium of artistic expression that uses the structure or function of 'book' as inspiration—a work of art in book form." Our collection sits somewhere in between, encapsulating works in both of these definitions - and some works that are beyond either. In our library, you'll find do-it-yourself zines and handmade chapbooks from small presses, sculptural pieces, weavings, objects, comic art, flipbooks, and dozens of other specific forms.
Our collection began in 1985, when the director of the Walter Phillips Gallery, Lorne Falk, handed Bob Foley (Banff Centre's first full-time librarian) a suitcase's worth of artists' books and said, "These are yours, you should do something with them." Through a meeting with AA Bronson, an artist who founded Art Metropole and the New York Art Book Fair, Foley expanded the collection by developing relationships with publishers and distributors. Since then, the collection came to include artists such as Dieter Roth, Ed Ruscha (whose artists' book Every Building on the Sunset Strip inspired the creation of this tumblr page!), Barbara Kruger, Joseph Beuys, Mieko Shiomi, Yoko Ono, Gertrude Stein, and John Cage.
Please take your time to explore our tumblr and our library catalogue - and if you ever get the chance, please come and explore our artists' books in person. The library staff are always excited to answer questions or help you find what you're looking for.
If you'd like to read more about artists' books, consider these books:
Aarons, Philip E. and Andrew Roth, editors. In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1055. Zurich: PPP Editions, 2009.
Arnar, Anna Sigrídur. The Book as Instrument: Stéphane Mallarmé, the Artist's Book, and the Transformation of Print Culture. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2011.
Castleman, Riva. A Century of Artists Books. New York: Museum of Modern Art; distributed by Henry N. Abrams, 1994.
Drucker, Johanna. A Century of Artists' Books. New York: Granary Books, 1995.
Phillpot, Clive. Booktrek: Selected Essays on Artists' Books since 1972. Zurich: JRP Ringier, 2013.

just read: The Dry by Jane Harper
Suspenseful and gripping - I sped through this book. One of the highlights was definitely the setting in the remote Australian bush. Having lived in the wheatbelt of Australia, I definitely recognised these people and this oppressive feeling which lingers over the towns and its residents. There is two mysteries in this novel, one from the present and one from the past and I felt the author did a great job weaving the various storylines and timelines together.
However, the final third of this book fell flat for me. First, I thought it began to drag around the 50-75% mark. I also did not like the way in which the author chose to end this. Without giving too much away - my preference in mysteries is always that the clues given come together in a surprising and interesting way, not that a third unforeseen option comes to light to solve the mystery.
That said, this was an entertaining novel and I would consider picking up the sequels.
genres: mystery, thriller
translator:  nil
rating: ★★★
themes: rural living, abuse, childhood friendship, love and family
A small town hides big secrets in this atmospheric, page-turning debut mystery by award-winning author Jane Harper.
In the grip of the worst drought in a century, the farming community of Kiewarra is facing life and death choices daily when three members of a local family are found brutally slain. Federal Police investigator Aaron Falk reluctantly returns to his hometown for the funeral of his childhood friend, loath to face the townsfolk who turned their backs on him twenty years earlier. But as questions mount, Falk is forced to probe deeper into the deaths of the Hadler family. Because Falk and Luke Hadler shared a secret. A secret Falk thought was long buried. A secret Luke's death now threatens

Rules: tag 9 people you want to get to know better. Tagged by @magog83
Last Song: Florence Welch’s cover of Jealous Guy. I’m not counting classical music I play in the background a lot.
Last Show: Legally Blonde at my daughter’s high school. :) She played Paulette and was amaaazzing! (Assuming this means live shows because there’s a TV question below.)
Currently Watching:  I always have a whole bunch of shows going at the same time. Succession, Ted Lasso, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Vienna Blood, The Last Kingdom, The Sandman, Vera (slowly plugging through all the seasons).
Currently Reading: Solomon’s Crown by Natasha Siegel. Historical gay romance featuring Richard the Lionheart and Philip II of France. I’ll be ditching this in favor of Exiles by Jane Harper, which I had on hold at the library and it just became available. This is the third novel in the Aaron Falk series of mysteries, which take place in Australia. Previous ones were excellent.
Current Obsession: The Beatles, specifically John/Paul. I have a Beatles blog at @pie-of-flames where I'm a lot more active.
Tagging @tailoredshirt @jelazakazone @vix-spes @slightlytookish @favoritedarkness @justanothershrub @mille-baci @zimshan @stardust-sadie if you feel like doing it.
