Okay so ✨Hamilton fanficion✨

Back in 2018 I was a big Hamilton (and other musicals like BMC, DEH, Heathers) fan, and I'm talking like a having amino (and a semi decent following on it), drawing silly fanart of the characters in maid suits, reading fanfiction fan

And sometimes I just go by my day and I randomly remember something from a Hamilton fanfiction that makes me stop in my tracks

And so, I decided to come onto here and provide a list of things I remember, that I want to forget, and am afraid that I'll forget at the same time, about Hamilton fanficion

(this being said, if you're still a hamilton fanfiction writer, you do you, this post does not mean to offend you)

I think like 80% of the fics if not more were college AU fics, and 15% were just different AUs but I don't think I've actually read a fic that wasn't a random one-shot taking place in canon timeline (I do believe it was because all of the hamilton ff writers just like me were 16 back then, and just simply did not know how to write historical fiction)

Most of the fics were LAMS (which is Alexander Hamilton x John Laurens) and it was practically canon in fandom eyes, and before anyone says anything, I've seen the letters, of course I've seen them but guyz, I think we were just a little bit delulu with how firmly we believed this (and I'm including myself in this!)

Still on shipping, the second most popular one was Jamilton (Thomas Jefferson x Alexander Hamilton) and I'm gonna be honest, this was my shit, I enjoyed this dynamic a lot more (I always found friends to lovers a bit boring), but man, were the ship wars brutal, I remember when amino mods tried to actually do some sort of a debate lams vs jamilton in which there were actual teams that wrote whole essays about which ship is more valid, but they ended up insulting each other after maybe two rounds

The last ship with its own point is Hamburr (Alexander Hamilton x Aaron Burr), I've always perceived this one as a cool kids ship, I think people who shipped this were the most chill about it

Background ships included Mulette (Muligan x Lafayette), which was one of those ships that were always in the background some sort of "if you don't ship this as your side ship i don't trust you" kind of ship, the same goes to Jeffmads (Jefferson x Madison) in lams fics, and in a lesser degree, and i don't remember its name, Eliza Schuler x Maria Lewis Reynolds (if you don't remember her from her name, is the woman Hamilton cheats on Eliza with), which is always fun, we love seeing some wlw

And now, the random facts that were just headcanons that people very often included, Jefferson and Lafayette were almost always in some sort related (especially in Jamilton fics) and that's because of the double cast, but I don't really think the same was true for any other character it was just them

Hamilton was always a caffeine addict with a bad sleep schedule who was way too engaged in whatever topic the fic made him and I remember one fic (it was a college au, of course) where the whole point was that it was actively ruining his relationships around him (it was a hamburr fic)

John Laurens loved turtles bc of some historical letters in which he mentioned he liked turtles and fandom did its thing and you couldn't read a lams fic where turtles weren't mentioned at least once

Charles Lee and Samuel Seabury were always minor villains/mean college students and the latter was sometimes in a weird unhealthy relationship with (king) George

There was no Eliza slander! I know it's a weird point, but now seeing how fandoms like spn or 911 reacted to female love interest I’m actually suprised there wasn't any, she was always just a good friend (or, in one Soulmate AU I think it was Jamilton, Eliza had Hamilton's name on her wrist but he didn't have hers and that was just brutal)

There was this fic that I won't mention by its whole name (it's off the internet anyway, I don't think the author wants to be reminded of it nor associated with it), that was a hanahaki AU Jamilton that nearing the end of its run had 300k+ words; it was about Alex having a mean spirited rivalry with Jefferson at their corpo lawyer job but hearing he has hanahaki so deciding he wants to be nice to him now, but little does he know that the hanahaki in question is *for* him and later he himself develops hanahaki for Jefferson and they even live together at one point so they have this situation where both of them are willing to die in order to keep the other one happy and cure them by being their rebounds but they actively making each other worse, it's probably not as good as I remember it to be but godDAMN was it a cult classic it really was one of the kind, ALSO a girl on a plane asked me what fic I was reading bc she was peeking over my shoulder because it looked good and it's just one of the interactions I will *never* forget

This fandom was also my first impression of A/B/O dynamic and it wasn't a good one, one of the fics with it that I remember was Jamilton, in which Hamilton was some sort of Omega activist (there was a scene where he was annoyed that romantic comedies in universe pushed the agenda of omega leaving their omegaxomega relationship for an alpha when oxo can be fully normally sufficient) and Jefferson was an alpha and there was a scene at a diner where Jefferson was spreading his pheromones so the other alphas would stop looking at Hamilton? yeah thanks, no thanks

Washington was 95% of the time Hamilton's father in one way or another but what did you expect, in one fic he was even Hamilton's mother soulmate but she died before he met her which I didn't know was possible in soulmates aus

I read one Jamilton fic on wattpad (even then I rarely used wattpad) that I think was (a college au) about how madison and jefferson were in abusive relationship and hamilton "rescued" jefferson out of it? (it feaured a truly iconic quote in a scene that i still remember where jefferson was having a panic attack in the dorm's bathroom and madison didn't want hamilton to think he was an abuser so he said something along the lines of "Don't listen to this whore" and Hamilton responded "I won't listen to a whore" and Jefferson was like no he also hates me no one loves me and then Hamilton added "But Thomas isn't a whore." and I kid you not, I think about this scene every time I see that stupid "do you think im pretty?" "no." ":(" "you're beautiful" meme) and my art was featured in one of the chapters! it wasn't a good art, but it was one of my biggest achievements back then (I drew the most art during my hamilton phase, I wish I kept that passion for drawing in the years to come)

And... I think that's all that I can think of off top of my head

Despite many peoples' opinion now, I don't think the fandom was wrong in how they perceived the source material, any who was in the fandom at that time can tell you that sometimes it felt like it's own entity, those were our characters and what they did in the musical and the historical context didn't really matter in the long run, besides some limited posts about lams or just funfacts about the real lives of the characters (i have so many funfacts about inaccuracies in hamilton stored in my head), just what the dynamic between them was

But, as have many, I grew out of hamilton fanfiction, it shaped how I moved around fanfiction and fandom spaces for years and no matter how much "cringe" that fandom was (and it was cringe in every way possible) I probably won't forget the fun parts (for example how I joined judges guild on amino that was supposed to host contests regularly and then we did one contest and 90% of the members stopped responding so I pretty much single-handedly picked the winners when we had like I think about 20-30 entries? contests were a big deal on amino) and I won't regret it, I think it was one of the if not best then funniest places to be on the Internet in 2018

I have recently rewatched Hamilton now that it is available on streaming and one) I found out that I didn't really know all the lyrics and certainly not what some parts mean (english as you probably already have noticed is not my first language) and two) I actually found myself thinking, man, i would like to read some good fanfiction about this, but not a single one Hamilton fanfiction on ao3 can be separated from how the fandom perceived the characters and that's okay, it's just the way it is

If you truly want to know the grasp of what was normal or not in this fandom, let me tell you this: I saw Jefferson Miku Binder before it was a meme, and it really wasn't that weird, I was seeing art and headcanons like these on the regular, that just how the fandom looked like

—ALEXANDER HAMILTON:

You met Alexander at a bar. While he was out with his friends you had been drinking away your sorrows after a breakup. He was distracted by you and every time his friends would talk they would notice that Alex wasn’t listening. Eventually, Hercules nudged Alex’s shoulder and told him to go and talk with you. After a few seconds of debating, he did, walking up to you in the bar and offering to buy you a drink.

—JOHN LAURENS:

You were introduced to John during Alexander’s wedding. You were a fellow guest attending it and went to go congratulate Alexander and Eliza when John accidentally bumped into you. He was quick to apologize, lowering his head as a sign of respect and apology before you shook your head and assured him no one was at fault. Alex had noticed that you both had started talking with one another and took it upon himself to formally introduce you both.

—HERCULES MULLIGAN:

Hercules met you when you once entered his tailor shop to ask if he could adjust one of your pieces of clothing since it was too loose on you. He was unable to speak for a few seconds before you cleared your throat and caught his attention again. He apologized and informed you that he would in fact be able to adjust the outfit for you. You were relieved since you planned to wear the dress to a ball you had been invited to by some of your closest friends which was soon approaching.

—MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE:

You were introduced to Lafayette on his first voyage to America. You had been a fellow passenger on the boat he was taking and was occupying the room two doors down from his. He would often converse with you in the early mornings and late nights in the hall, sometimes inviting you into his room for coffee or tea. You both learned that you were both staying relatively close to one another in New York and agreed that it’d be nice to meet up again.

—THOMAS JEFFERSON:

You were an attendant at the first cabinet meeting that was held. His attention was drawn to you when he saw you scowl at Hamilton’s taunts at the corner of his eye. When the President called for a brief recess Thomas decided to make his way over to you and introduced himself. He then asked why it was that you disagreed with Hamilton’s plan for a bank- mainly to see if he could use any of your thoughts against Alexander. He did just that once the recess was over, and you were rather impressed.

—JAMES MADISON:

James was extremely sick during one of his meetings at the President's House to the point that Thomas and Washington took it upon themselves to find him a nurse to take care of him. That nurse simply happened to be you. You advised him to take the rest of the week and requested that he was brought home immediately to rest and ensure that he would receive the proper medicine there. James asked you to tend to him while he was at home, informing you that you were more educated than his current nurse and that he’d have to fire them and hire you instead.

—AARON BURR:

You met Aaron after he received a semi-serious injury on the battlefield. You were the lead nurse at one of the Patriot’s camping sites and had been on your break when Aaron entered your tent with a sprained wrist. You had wrapped it in gauze and informed him that it was best he stayed out of action for two weeks to properly allow it to heal. He wanted to protest but you told him that if he ever wanted to use his hand as he could before, he best shut up and rest. He did.

—GEORGE WASHINTON:

You met the General at the winter’s ball. You had been invited by Philip Schuyler himself, your parents being a close friend to the man. You were about speaking with Angelica when a man approached her, interrupting your conversation. Washington had seen Alexander butt in and shook his head, approaching you to apologize. You were startled by him before assuring him that all was well. He offered to dance while you waited for Angelica. She wouldn’t be free for the rest of the night, and Washington was great company up till the end.

—CHARLES LEE:

You first met Charles in downtown New York where you were shopping for some goods to bring home to prepare for dinner. You were alone and Charles noticed that two men had been following you around the store. He took it upon himself to walk up to you and introduce himself like an old friend, whispering to you the reason for him doing so. You went along, hugging him and speaking as though it had been forever since you last saw him. Once you both were out of the store you thanked him, but he insisted on walking you home and you did not oppose.

—PHILIP HAMILTON:

Philip’s parents were close friends to your own and so you and Philip both grew up with one another. He was your first friend and you often were babysat together. When Philip was old enough to attend school he would come home and visit you next door and teach you about everything he learned since you couldn’t attend school with him. It was the highlight of both your days and because of it, you two were inseparable when you grew older.

—SAMUEL SEABURY:

You owned a produce stand in the center of London which Samuel would often pass on his way to church. He would often smile towards you but never stopped to actually buy anything. One day he decided that he would and approached your stand with a sort of giddy excitement that a six-year-old would have with a new toy. He asked you what you recommended and bought exactly what you had suggested to him, paying you a few dollars more than the actual price you gave.

—KING GEORGE III:

King George was introduced to you at a play. You were the lead role in a play he was attending and had caught his eyes the minute you began to act. Not only were you visually pleasing but your acting was astonishing to the King. When the play was finished he made his way to the stage and asked to see you, when he was lead to you he was quick to offer you a proposal. He would allow you and your fellow cast to visit the palace and have dinner with him, so long as you acted out for him and his men. You agreed.

The moment you opened the door to Mr Washington's office, John turned around. You glanced at him and then at your principal in confusion. "Ms Y/L/N, please take a seat," he said gesturing towards the seat next to John. "Is everything alright sir?" you asked nervously. "I was inforned that you were the one who organized for Mr Laurens, Mr Hamilton, Mr Lafayette, Mr Mulligan and Mr Burr to play after they were told that they couldn't play by Mr Adams because they auditioned to late. Mr Adams saw this as you abusing your power as president of the student body and has called for you to lose your position," Mr Washington informs her. "Sir, the bonfire is meant to be space for freedom of expression of all kinds and for all students. The boys are immensely talented, line up wasn't even full and if anyone abused their power its Mr Adams because of whatever grudge has with Alexander Hamilton," you defended.

Mr Washington smiled warmly at your reasoning and laughed. "Relax Ms Y/L/N, you're not in trouble. Well you would be if the boys weren't as talented as they are. With that being said, the rest of the teachers in the art department have decided that you and the boys collaborate for the National Eclipse this year," he said. For the first time since you set foot into the office, John spoke. "What!?" you both exclaimed in unison. "Sir with all due respect. The girls and I have already finished the audition process for the dancers and are already far into the routine," you reasoned. "Ms Y/L/N, the Eclipse is in 9 months. If you ladies managed to get so far in 2 then I'm sure you can work around it for the next 9," Washington countered. "But Mr Washington-" "Y/N, you said it yourself that the boys are immensely talented. Besides, you guys can put together something outstanding with your combined talents. Its a guaranteed win," Washington shrugged. "Or I could prohibit you from the Eclipse for disobeying Mr Adams," he added as he leaned back into his seat. You glared at John who sunk into his seat at your death stare. You thought about how it could go really well if things worked out and if they didn't you could simply beg Mr Washington to boot the boys from the performance. He'd have to understand right? Your entire future was riding on this. "Fine. But they dont get special treatment. If they mess up in any way, they are out, just like everyone else who auditioned," you said. To Mr Washington it sounded like a condition but to John, it was a warning.

At that moment both of you had one thing on your mind. "This is gonna be a long 9 months."

Lee groaned while Aaron attempted to carry him. His side was bleeding all over Aaron’s jacket and shirt, leaving dark red stains.

“Aaron, you’re shaking…..just…..*cough*…let me walk on my own.”

“It’s okay, we’re already here anyways.”

Lee slowly looked at the tent and groaned as his side began to hurt again. Aaron wasn’t able to take one of his hands off Lee, so he pushed through the curtain doors and shakily laid Lee on the mattress that was on the tent floor.

“Where’s……..the…….medic?”

Aaron looked around the tent realizing that the doctor wasn’t in the room he then turned to Lee shaking his head in concern and lifting his shoulders to shrug.

“See that- *cough* See that box……over there?”

Lee shakily pointed over to a crate in the corner of the tent that was hidden by it’s own shadow. Aaron immediately got up and carried the box over to the side of the mattress where he slowly brought to the ground.

“G-Good, now……open it, you need to help me.”

Aaron looked at Lee in shock, he’s treated wounds before, but never a bullet wound. He could kill Lee if he didn’t do this right. He then shook his head began to empty out the box, taking each tool and bandage out, he then took the metal bowl of water that had been sitting in the room and started to dip a cloth inside, getting it as wet as possible. He looked over nervously as Lee laid on the mattress and began to unbutton his shirt and get a better look at the wound.

“Are you okay? You’re breathin’ heavily.”

“Y-Yes I’m just scared of messing this up.”

“You won’t mess up Burr.”

“But what I-”

“You won’t.”

Aaron gulped and started to clean the wound off, taking away all access blood. He then rubbed rubbing alcohol on and stopped the second he heard Lee groan in pain.

“Wh-Why’d you stop?”

“I heard you groan!”

“Don’t worry about it, it’s supposed to sting.”

“Um…..okay.”

After the rubbing alcohol was on Aaron quickly slid the bullet out causing Lee to flinch and wince.

“Keep going.”

Aaron then put some medicine on a white patch before putting it over the wound and smoothing it out. He then grabbed some long bandages and wrapped them around wound to keep the patch secure.

“Good job.”

“Th-Thank you, sir.”

Aaron stayed beside the mattress and caressed Lee’s forehead and softly hummed. Lee smiled up at Aaron before shakily grabbing his arm and tugging on it.

“What is it?”

“Lower yourself, I-I need to tell you something.”

Aaron got as close as he could to Lee before he suddenly felt a pair scarred lips meet his own. His face heated up and his eyes slowly closed while he sat on his knees and was leaning over slightly. After the kiss broke, Lee softly smiled and whispered “I love you.” in Aaron’s ear.

“I-I love you too.”

This was the first time getting hurt ever felt good to Lee.

Behind the scenes!

Tetsu and Jun are the director/assistant directors

The managers (Takako, Sacchin, Yui, Haruno, Anna and Akane) are managers! They're in charge of costume, set and props.

Ryousuke used to be the bullet, but Haruichi has since taken over that role. Ryou steps in whenever needed and has also become an understudy for the side antagonists (Seabury, Eacker, etc.)

(I don't really know what to call them, so "side antagonists" it is)

Itsuki is Harada's understudy for Burr.

The Kominatos' hair stands out a lot, but they tried wigs one time and promptly decided against it.

Furuya is super stiff in the beginning, but he has a good voice for Maria, so they kept working with him until he was less awkward.

In the first part of "The Schuyler Sisters", he's not really petulant, but more resigned/tired.

Okumura gets WAY too into badmouthing Miyuki and duelling Yui. On the bright side, that means his performance is immaculate.

Tanba gets messed up doing "Farmer Refuted" in rehearsals so many damn times

Sawamura's rendition of "Burn" is godly. He also does very convincing fake crying.

Mei is basically the reincarnation of King George III. He's also very distracting prancing around the sides in Act II. Harada keeps telling him to "quit showing off"

The cast almost definitely messes around backstage or between shows. They swap roles and mess up the choreography while the actual actors of said roles shake their heads on the sidelines.

Somebody took two of the prop guns and now there's a dramatic mock duel happening in the middle of nowhere. One of them is still in their socks and the other is wearing half their costume. Someone is humming “Ten Duel Commandments” as background music to the duel. Sacchin is looking for those props and is very mad.

A look into the casting process…

The decision on who to cast as Washington was a toss-up between Tetsu and Chris.

A lot of interactions in the canon series were considered!

For example, Misawa as Hamilton/Eliza and Kuramochi being Eijun's big brother (or in this case, sister) figure.

Those were some of the casting decisions I had since the start, along with ones like Maezono as Mulligan/Madison, Mei as King George III, and either Kominato as the Bullet.

Roles that gave me a thousand and one headaches were Burr, Laurens, Lafayette, Peggy, Lee, Reynolds and Eacker.

Deciding on Okumura as Eacker and Yui as Philip was an eureka moment for me. Both decisions were made at the same time. I totally forgot about The Laurens-Lee duel, but not everything can fit perfectly anyway. I must admit I got very excited at the prospect of Okumura duelling Yui. Rather fitting, isn’t it?

I'd like to think that the others who didn't get roles are ensemble, backstage crew or technicians.

I didn't wanna cast characters from schools outside of Seido at first, but I COULD NOT stop thinking about Mei as King George III and it just. It had to be done.

The initial inspiration I had for this was actually the Kominatos as the Schuyler sisters, with Ryou as Angelica and Haruichi as Eliza, in which case Hamilton might've been Mochi. But that was more of a funny "what-if" which I didn't expand on very much.
