Mystery Men by Kinka Usher.
This movie is a combination of a lot of things that I like:
An underdog story, gaudy superheroes, creative sets/visuals/costumes, and some of the funniest actors of our era. Loosely based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics, Mystery Men takes place in a world where not only are superheroes for reals, but there are way too many of them, putting some of the superheroes with the lamest powers on the Z-list.
The main thing I don't like about this film is the ending. Throughout the movie, none of the Mystery Men's powers work quite right. Then suddenly, at the end, everything just works for no good reason. That's lazy writing. What should have happened was the heroes should've figured out a way to turn their weaknesses into strengths. Instead, their powers just work out of the blue, "THE END."
Still, I really like the production value and this movie has some of my favorite fanboy jokes. Also, I find Mr. Furious relatable from time to time...

FLAMING CARROT COMICS #1 MAY 1984 BY BOB BURDEN
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS
Flaming Carrot is now a drunk hobo (a side effect of becoming more intelligent). A cub reporter is interested in doing an interview to him, but he must investigate these martian sightings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently, martians have been selling each other lands on Earth and they are coming to get what belongs to them. This results in utter chaos until Flaming Carrot agrees to save the day, by explaining income taxes to the aliens. Martians then leave the planet in horror.

REVIEW
Another great Flaming Carrot story, in this case with a clever introduction to the character and some of his “rogues?”.
Burden’s style is very different to other black and white books, because it is really black and white. Shades are not that common. This gives the comic a very distinctive look and forces you to focus on the humor.
The climax of this story was good. When you are dealing with an absurd story, you have to expect an absurd ending... with a certain logic. The whole book feels like a vague satire on xenophobia, whether Bob Burden was aware of it at the time, I’ll never know.
I give the book a score of 8.
