Our last day of the #NC500 started off with an abomination of a breakfast, two quarters of a mushroom does not make a portion! The rain and cloud had cleared aff leaving a dry, bright but still very windy morning as we left Bettyhill and headed East. A quick stop at Dounreay for some photographs, the golf ball is looking decidedly less shiny these days, let's be honest it's not Epcot is it! A wee stop at Thurso to fill up the Triumphs thimble of a fuel tank before we pushed on to Dunnet Head, the true northern most point of the mainland. We were then practically blown the short distance to John O'Groats, where we avoided the touristic emporia, but of course visited the famous sign post. We then began our ride south, flying down the A99 before looking for a lunch stop at Wick. We parked down by the harbour and took a short walk up to the main street, apparently the shortest Street in the UK is here, but we must have missed it... What we did find was Morag's, which is clearly where the locals go for lunch. A simple soup and slice of bread along with a brew is just what we needed and it was delicious. Leaving Wick the A99 became the A9 as we wound our way down the coast and the traffic steadily increased as we hacked south. Needing fuel and getting bored of the big road we turned off at the Kildary turn. Here we found @kensgarage_kildary a great stop for petrol and a coffee, and the adjoining car sales has a mint Pug 205 in the corner and some great banter. We stuck to the coast road and went through Invergordon before rejoining the A9 at the bridge. If you have a spare couple of hours before completing the 500 take the first left as you get to the end of the bridge. You'll get some great views as you head back up the firth all the way to Cromarty itself. There you'll find a warm welcome and some great contrasts of wild scenery and resting oil rigs. We headed back down the other side of the Black Isle before taking a left turn to Munlochy where we found our accommodation for the evening, the rather fabulous @allangrangearms .
