I don’t like getting intense over petty things, but why are people calling large paragraphs “bad formatting” now. It’s just formatting. Sometimes, a larger paragraph serves its text well, and sometimes it doesn’t, and there is a LOT more that goes into making a text block readable than length alone.

something I feel like people miss while reading stormbringer is this line from the second chapter when Dazai and Verlaine met:

'Nevertheless, Dazai continued to slaughter his enemies and serve the Port Mafia in order to force himself into an even darker place.'

So, "why does Dazai stay in the mafia for so long?"

Because he wants to be in a bad place. He wants to commit these atrocities to further dehumanise himself. He wants to alienate himself and is determined to convince both himself and everyone around him that he is a terrible thing, the 'black wraith of the Port Mafia' who had no empathy or sense of humanity.

That's why he stays in the Mafia, that's why he works so hard in the Mafia, that's why he does what he's told. He's an automated killing machine capable of planning out and causing mass destruction, and his fuel is self-hatred.

He doesn't take pride in his 'accomplishments' in the mafia because, again, he doesn't actually want to succeed in the mafia, he wants to prove he's a bad person. He's not in the mafia to try and find a reason to live anymore, his reason for that is Chuuya, he's realised he's not going to find it in the mafia, even if he's not going to admit it until the dark era.

He probably feels a sense of guilt and disgust, but refuses to acknowledge it because he thinks that as something inhuman, he isn't meant to feel things like that, and the more he does, the further he removes himself from any sense of remorse, until he doesn't feel it any more, and probably still hasn't processed even in the ADA.

He stays in the mafia, and does the things he's told with such accuracy and deadliness because he thinks it's the only thing he can do, and he can use it to prove he's no longer human.

before she died, she preferred to be called Andrew and a girl, she called herself Andrew online and referred to herself as a girl.

unfortunately she had a lot of internalized transphobia and claimed she was NOT trans and that her situation was different, but at the same time she basically defined being trans while explaining her situation

You are capable of harming others. No matter who you are or what you’ve been through. Even if you think you are the most oppressed demographic in the world. Even if you’ve been through the worst traumas known to humankind. None of it gives you an excuse to lash out at people who have done nothing to you personally. None of it. god. i’ve been chewing on vex’s “save him.” to percy when she died in c3e114 for her knowing percy’s one-track vengeance mind reasons but i’m currently rewatching/reading through transcripts for unrelated rotting reasons and was reminded of the moment in c1e102 after both the twins had been killed (vex via power word kill iirc & vax via disintegrate) and vex was brought back only for the moment the fight ended to ask “where’s vax?” and her horror to realize her and her brother had both been dead and now only he was and that he’d been left alone (and she’d been left without him) and when vax came wandering out of the woods as a revenant but still undoubtedly Vax how vex was ready to accept him without question even when percy raised the very real question of vax’s identity, given that they were fighting the perversion of death and i’m just head in hands about the consistency and the heartbreak that is the twins and the fact that vax’s deal to ensure he would not lose his sister ensured that vex would lose her brother and regardless of the circumstances vex accepting whatever version of him she might get to keep: the one who walks loomingly out of a fey forest and the one who speaks stiltedly at her wedding and the one who is stiff as he returns her embrace while she explains the children who carry her legacy (and his as well, she’s ensured).

like. nearly 30 years ago vex came back from death knowing she left her brother behind only to soon learn that he’d be returning to not-quite-death in a matter of (little) time and that she’d have however long her life would be left to live without him. and then she’s on a battle field fighting to free a version of her brother that isn’t quite right, that is dead and isn’t, who is lost to her but still in her grasp, and she thinks she’s dying and she begs the man she’s gotten to spend a lifetime with (nearly the same length of a life that her brother’d gotten) to save him. and i wonder if that was a plea to save vax in the sense of somehow bringing him back or to release him to the raven queen, so that vex could be in the reach of her brother again, not the matron’s champion, even if she was dead alongside him.

Kevin Keith's 27 day hunger strike and the censorship around it

(most post body text copy-pasted from Death Penalty Action news email)

From prison, Kevin planned to manage a publicity campaign to call attention to his hunger strike and his demand for a just resolution to his case, however... the day he started his hunger strike, he was moved to solitary confinement. A prison executive came to see him... 

First she demanded that he hand over all of his documents, his paper, stamps, envelopes and his pen. Then she informed him of a policy change: Prisoners on a hunger strike are not allowed to communicate with the outside world.

Kevin had told his lawyers and some members of the media of his plans, but that was it. I certainly had no details, and Kevin's brother Charles also had no details. Worse, there was no way to contact or even visit Kevin, because he was in the hole (solitary confinement).

Kevin held out for 27 days.

His lawyers came to check on him once a week to make sure he was OK, but that's it.  No media responded to his plea. No celebrity supporters tweeted about his plight. We at Death Penalty Action had no information, and could therefore do nothing.

Even as Kevin drank copious amounts of water, he still was dehydrated. Kevin received intravenous hydration ten times, on the following dates:

February 7

February 12

February 14

Twice on February 16

Twice on February 18

Twice on February 22

And we had no idea.

Kevin says he found a spiritual benefit to the experience, but he stopped when the prison doctor warned him that he risked damaging his kidneys. They threatened him with being transferred to the hospital, restrained, and force-fed. At that point, he decided to end his hunger strike.

Kevin Keith is still waiting for Governor DeWine to act on his request for executive clemency. As you may recall, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against him back in November. It is unclear what additional legal avenues he has available to him.
