Now, this may not be the most original thought per-se, but I think most people have caught onto the symbolism of each season 6 casa guy's breakfast;

Andy and Francis both having something perfectly edible, and healthy enough to eat for breakfast, (the pancakes and avocado toast) that reflect good things to come.

Hamish's greasy fry-up, while edible, wasn't the healthiest choice when it comes to everyday breakfast—nothing wrong with cheat days though! (I even love fry-ups, myself.)

And that leaves us with Marshall's burnt-to-ashes toast. I won't sugarcoat it, that's the last thing you'd wanna have for breakfast. So, choosing to have breakfast with him makes for the most unmistakable showing of interest, in the chosen company.

I have juxtaposed breakfast with Marshall to the foundational building block of his route though—how he actively pushes himself away from MC, because he doesn't view himself as good enough for her. This theme of his shows up even so early on;

It's very subtle, but through the hypothesis that yes, anybody's friendly company would be better than burnt toast, it'd be an easy out for him to then conclude that he isn't special enough for MC to seriously consider, at this point.

But, two can play at that game Marshall. Instead of reaffirming his assumed conclusion that I would just say, "yes, you are better than burnt toast," this is my chosen dialog, that I've actually only seen for the first time, on my in-depth fic research;

Even if he thinks MC could be lying here.. (which would be valid) I'd like to think her word choice shows that she does appreciate his effort, and time spent with her, enough to big him up in a way that's more meaningful than just stating what would've been the obvious.

Thinking about Rachel saying "once I got to know him I realized he wasn't like anyone I'd ever met, and that I might be in big trouble" and Harvey toasting her and saying "to trouble". They're really just. Both in love with that dude.
