BUENOS AIRES, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Argentina elected libertarian outsider Javier Milei as its new president on Sunday, rolling the dice on an outsider with radical views to fix an economy battered by triple-digit inflation, a looming recession and rising poverty.

Official results have not been released, but his rival, Peronist Economy Minister Sergio Massa, conceded in a speech. His candidacy was hampered by the country's worst economic crisis in two decades while he has been at the helm.

Milei is pledging economic shock therapy. His plans include shutting the central bank, ditching the peso, and slashing spending, potentially painful reforms that resonated with voters angry at the economic malaise, but sparked fears of austerity in others.

"Milei is the new thing, he's a bit of an unknown and it is a little scary, but it's time to turn over a new page," said 31-year-old restaurant worker Cristian as he voted on Sunday.

But Milei's challenges are enormous. He will have to deal with the empty coffers of the government and central bank, a creaking $44 billion debt program with the International Monetary Fund, inflation nearing 150% and a dizzying array of capital controls.

With many Argentines not fully convinced by either candidate, some had characterized the vote as a choice of the "lesser evil": fear of Milei's painful economic medicine versus anger at Massa and his Peronist party for an economic crisis that has left Argentina deeply in debt and unable to tap global credit markets.

Milei has been particularly popular among the young, who have grown up seeing their country lurch from one crisis to another.

"Our generation is pushing the presidency of Milei to stop our country being a pariah," said Agustina Lista, 22, a student in Buenos Aires.

Milei's win shakes up Argentina's political landscape and economic roadmap, and could impact trade in grains, lithium and hydrocarbons. Milei has criticized China and Brazil, saying he won't deal with "communists," and favors stronger U.S. ties.

The shock rise of the 53-year-old economist and former TV pundit has been the story of the election, breaking the hegemony of the two main political forces on the left and the right - the Peronists and the main Together for Change conservative bloc.

"The election marks a profound rupture in the system of political representation in Argentina," said Julio Burdman, director of the consultancy Observatorio Electoral, ahead of the vote.

Supporters of Massa, 51, an experienced political wheeler-dealer, had sought to appeal to voter fears about Milei's volatile character and "chainsaw" plan to cut back the size of the state.

"Milei's policies scare me," teacher Susana Martinez, 42, said on Sunday after she voted for Massa.

Milei is also staunchly anti-abortion, favors looser gun laws and has called Argentine Pope Francis a socialist "son of a bitch". He used to carry a chainsaw in a symbol of his planned cuts but shelved it in recent weeks to help boost his moderate image.

After October's first-round vote, Milei struck an uneasy alliance with the conservatives, which boosted his support. But he faces a highly fragmented Congress, with no single bloc having a majority, meaning that he will need to get backing from other factions to push through legislation. Milei's coalition also does not have any regional governors or mayors.

That may temper some of his more radical proposals. Long-suffering voters are likely to have little patience, and the threat of social unrest is never far below the surface.

His backers say only he can uproot the political status quo and economic malaise that has dogged South America's second-largest economy for years.

"Milei is the only viable option so we do not end up in misery," said Santiago Neria, a 34-year-old accountant.

although my to-do list from last night doesn’t really show it, i think i’ve done a good job with today.  feeling deadline pressure as the end of the month looms, but it’s funny how the stuff that exerts the most psychic pressure (laundry) can make everything else feel more manageable once it’s done. if i had a nickle for every time something i bring up in the following post featured an animated suit of armor which is otherwise totally empty, i’d have two nickles-- which isn’t much, but it’s fun that it happened twice.

reading i’m in a funny rotation of three books right now, depending on mood and time of day: the tyrant baru cormorant (just finished chapter 16, coming up to the end of part 2); mexican gothic (about halfway through); and the nonexistent knight by italo calvino (not counting the audiobook i just started for commutes, the glass hotel, emily st john mandel).  i actually picked the nonexistent knight out for a housemate of mine for christmas, and she’s lent it back to me to read for myself now, and the further we get the more justified i feel in picking it out. it’s not what i’d call ideal representation of the middle ages, but at the same time the tongue-in-cheek or satirical moments and the poking fun at medieval romance is actually exactly what i love about medievalism-y 20th century fiction. this is what i sort of wish the name of the rose actually felt like, if that makes sense?  it reminds me of when i read orlando furioso a few years ago, and i think i’m appreciating this a lot more than i would have if i hadn’t read that.

i already knew from reading his book invisible cities that i liked calvino’s turn of phrase; it’s a short book but i’m reading it extremely slowly, sifting every sentence a) to make sure i’ve understood the ideas and b) because the language is very fun. mid-century, post-war italian satire and surrealism, such a departure (deliciously) from what i read most of the time. it is so good for me to read things in translation, god. the fact that this one has a narrative, rather than the different vignettes of invisible cities, the fact that we follow the character of the knight agilulf and watch how he behaves in the army of king charlemagne as a knight who doesn’t exist physically, i.e. is just an empty suit of armor, walking around, but does seem to have feelings and thoughts, and wants to do his job as flawlessly as possible to make up for the whole lack-of-corporal form thing, is very affecting.  there’s something going on with the difference between having a presence and ‘existing’, especially in the context of all these famous heroes of medieval romance who didn’t “exist” either, really (this is not the historical charlemagne, for one)... pull quotes:

“World conditions were still confused in the era when this took place. it was not rare then to find names and thoughts and forms and institutions that corresponded to nothing in existence. but at the same time the world was polluted with objects and capacities and persons who lacked any name or distinguishing mark. it was a period when the will and determination to exist, to leave a trace, to rub up against all that existed, was not wholly used up since there were many who did nothing about it...” p. 31

watching did i write it here, or just think it, that this year i’m going to try and watch more movies? it’s almost-- not quite-- a resolution, that 2023 is going to be my year of film, whatever that means. part of it means just starting things on my own, not waiting for anyone to be free to watch things with me, and part of that also is being okay with pausing in the middle of something and coming back to it if necessary. i’m also letting myself cast a wide net in terms of quality and content: for example, i made my flight home in january an olivia wilde double feature, watching both booksmart and don’t worry darling , and beginning atomic blonde which i had to finish later off the plane. since being home, i’ve watched in the mood for love, netflix’s persuasion (2022)(lmao), and now the first half of scorcese’s the age of innocence. but rather than focus on a film here, since there’ll be a lot more of that soon, instead i’ll note for the record that i have now finished full-metal alchemist, thanks to @pep-squad-lizzie​ ! which seems appropriate to mention now since i was already thinking about empty suits of armor with hopes and dreams and obligations to those they care about. i’m not sure i can definitively say who my favorite is, but al is never not on my mind.

playing: pentiment thoughts next time! friday night was boardgame night, we had some lovely people over and played first spyfall, which i think everyone was a bit too polite and/or nervous to really get gungho about, and then broke into two groups of three to play azul and, for those of us willing to learn a new one, azul: queen’s garden. this more complicated take on the original azul game actually, for me, feels a bit different in terms of the kind of planning ahead it requires, and i think in that sense doesn’t feel like a replacement for azul at all, but a whole new game in a way. beautiful game. i didn’t really grok how to anticipate the vagaries of the rotating wheel, which tells you which tiles will be scored which round, in time for it to help my score. also the way that each tile had a suit (birds, trees, various flowers) which assigned it a point value, and a color, and matches could be made according to either one but not both, resonated with my many hours of gin rummy and solitaire. it compels me.

making i did a version of a rice-cabbage-sweet potato-- avocado bowl thing today, a recipe lifted directly from one of my previous meal-kit meals but which i’ve re-imagined as a vehicle for consuming weird leftovers. my housemate and i made the brilliant decision to make monday night cake last week, but the labor was mostly hers, i just zested and juiced the lemon. looking forward to doing some of my own baking (bought plums!! plum bread here we GO) and/or other crafty things soon! i am promised a craft brunch with some dear ones next weekend, where i will be attempting to write and decorate many several pieces of mail.

working on trying not to focus on the way time before my upcoming presentation is flying by, but instead spending that time maybe working on the slides?? maybe? possibly narrowing down what i’m going to be saying?? perhaps? chapter two feedback is trickling in and i think i’m feeling positive about it on the whole, but i get to turn that chapter loose into a pasture until 3 is in better shape, which this presentation script will hopefully aid me in accomplishing. tl;dr everything is diss work, except actual diss work, which is translation.

On “Cheap” Representation

Hot take: “cheap” or last-minute representation may suck for most people within the poorly represented communities, but it can be really important for kids growing up in an environment that looks down on those communities

Yes, I get annoyed with the “slap a diversity label and call it a day” approach to writing characters, because it’s often a sign of lazy writing. Yes, I get annoyed when there’s clear corporate meddling that comes at the expense of the story. No, I don’t like the “bury your gays” trope. But “sneaky” representation that isn’t on the cover, isn’t in the blurb, and isn’t paraded around is possibly the only way some kids are going to realize that some people exist.

Storytime: I grew up in a moderately religious, fairly sheltered, very homophobic environment. I went to church and Sunday school once a week and attended a Christian school from preschool through senior year of high school. I didn’t know what “gay” meant until I was nearly in high school and doing my own research online.

But, sometime in elementary school, I stumbled across a book where the main character was a little girl named Bo being raised by two men. Bo’s fathers are not on the cover, but they are on the back cover and in the very first illustration in the book. They’re never depicted as being in love with each other, but neither of them have other love interests either. Is it MLM representation? Are they in a queerplatonic relationship? It depends entirely on what the reader wants to see.

That’s what makes this kind of “cheap” representation so important. If I had picked up that book as a kid and read “Jack and Arvid were Bo’s fathers, and they are gay,” instead of “Bo had two fathers and no mothers, and after she got her fathers, she got a brother too,” I probably would’ve put it down because I’d been taught that “gay” was a bad thing even though I didn’t understand. If I’d been younger and picked up a book with “TWO GAY FATHERS” plastered in rainbows all over the cover, my parents would’ve made me put it back on the library shelf, or if my school got ahold of a copy, other parents would’ve raised a huge fuss until it was removed.

But because it wasn’t obvious, I got to read that book. It was still a story about Bo, with her fathers as side characters, but it introduced me to the idea of two people of the same gender raising a child together, which ended up being a very early catalyst to my later queer awakening. When I was a young teenager struggling to understand what all these LBGTQ+ terms meant, it provided a source of familiarity and comfort. It helped me say, “No, this isn’t as new and scary as it seems. I’m going to keep researching.” It set me on the road to breaking out of the uninformed homophobic mindset I’d been raised with, which was a necessary precedent to my asexual awakening and later my lesbian awakening.

I love seeing book designs that flaunt their queer content, but the ones that fly under the radar are special to me, because maybe one day they’ll be someone else’s introduction to the idea of queer people.

We're still not ready for the "there are plenty of queer creations out there, and if you supported them, you'd see even more" conversation, are we? Seems like we're not. This extends to f/f content as well. It would involve supporting indie creators more, and the goals are more often "I want my queer or f/f ship to be canon and have lots of fanart" or "I want people to really like the work I make and for everything to center around my ideas of what should exist" and not so much about celebrating queer creations we might enjoy. (And let's face it, we won't always enjoy some of it.) But let's paint it as other people having moral failings or being hateful in some way, right? /sarcasm

I favor m/m in my writing (both original and fic). I'm a trans man and have been out since before I dipped my toes in fandom. I came out as trans in late 2003. I didn't know what yaoi was. I barely had any access to representation, and I latched onto the scraps I could find. Sunday nights, I huddled in front of a muted 13" television screen in a corner of my room, closed captioning on so I knew what was being said, using a blanket hanging from my bunk bed to hide it in case my mom decided to walk in. What was I watching? Queer as Folk. (US version.) It honestly changed my life. Getting online more and more later on introduced me to fandom, and that introduced me to a whole world of queer works. I was thrilled! It didn't matter if I didn't like some of it. I would sift through yaoi and yuri until I found the stuff I did like. But guess which one I spent more time on? I write a lot of BL. It's not really anyone's business, though. It shouldn't be the sole indicator that there's a moral failing here or that I hate f/f. I write too much f/f for that to be true, but I'll go into why saying that doesn't actually matter in a little bit. I have a hard time listening to people who make up excuses for why they never read books or even sometimes other people's fanfiction, but oh hey, here's my writing and it's actual representation, and I wish more fanart of my ships existed! And then they cry that there's nothing out there. And claim the love of BL as the true enemy.

...So fun fact, I own a lot of queer books. A lot of books in general. But lots are queer.

This is a haul of like 90% of the books I got last year:

It'll be tough to see a lot of the titles in this giant pile, but... There are a lot of queer relationships depicted in these books. This is barely a chip in my wishlist of queer books I'd like to read! (Most of these were gifts or secondhand, because I'm pretty broke.) And out of them, wow, some f/f happens to be there! Either as main characters or side characters. As canon ships. (But even if there wasn't any f/f there, you don't know who I've kissed in my life, the people I've loved, the people I wish I could've been with. You don't know my personal values, the improvements I want for the world. You don't know shit about me by finding out I like to read, write, and watch BL. And I don't owe you any of the reasons.) The point of this post and that image, however, is to say that queer creations fucking exist in large numbers. There's hardly a shortage. I'm crying at how little I can keep up with it these days, especially in a scary world with book bannings and little shits wanting the Hays code back. And here's the deal: creators get shafted. Sometimes, they have to quit creating (as much or at all) just to make a living. Some post on AO3 (cough) because fandom is wonderfully transformative and we have some itches to scratch. Being supportive is always better than tearing them down. And when you start uplifting the work you like, instead of yelling about the stuff you don't, suddenly there are publishers and film makers taking note. They're recognizing what's in demand. In many ways, they've already started to. (Although you should probably keep supporting artists and be wary of companies, but sometimes companies uplift important artists and that's cool too.) Your friends and online circles are seeing these titles and characters and ships and might even find themselves intrigued. But when you just yell about stuff that's not going the way you want it to, it's actually satisfactory to deny it to you. I'm not big on giving entitled people the content they crave. I do what I want, and I have been known to keep my work to myself because of demands and complaints. I don't stop creating, but it's not yours to have, it's mine. Some people just get tired of the harassment and sweeping generalizations about the kind of person they are, because innocuous creations are blown out of proportion by people with their own agendas. Some people create more of what you might hate out of spite. Others give up sharing, because while everyone is focusing on all the things they hate, that person's creations that might've been up your alley gets fucking buried. Ignored. And then they don't really see the point in sharing. In a world that is brimming with hate, where some people do using writing to profit on hate (jerkoffrolling), maybe your enemy isn't... people (queer or not, none of your business btw) creating queer art!

Hydrocortisone is just for a week, an antibiotic cream but still if it is hot, it will go back these sweat rash... After hydrocostisone,will use this " Healmusz" it is a soothing cream for sweat rash or eczema due to sweat rash or any fungal infection even psoriasis...

I have to maintain a mositurizer as well on my sweat rash. Probably, a soothing cream of anything... Aside from these... Cetaphil or Soothing Gel can be used...

These creams are part of my borrowed or loaned, these coming from Lazadah...

The good thing about "Healmusz" it has a colloidal oatmeal which a treatment for itchy skin and rashes....
