"A kiss as an apology" -

Tayala takes a deep breath as she plants her feet, her hands at her side. Whatever happens now, she saved her husband. Whatever happens now, she protected her daughter. She lifts her head, and meets the faceless helmet before her with a small smile. “I’m sorry,” she tells the Inquisitor lightly, “it seems you’ve wasted your time.”

A sudden power wraps around her throat, squeezing like a fist. It pulls her upwards, her toes leaving the ground last, and she can’t swallow the choked whine that escapes her.

A hot, orange light cuts through the Inquisitor’s black armor; she falls back to her feet as the beam of light vanishes again, and teeters slightly on her feet as it slides sideways and falls in a slump. She only has one moment to catch her breath before two arms wrap tight around her waist.

Her heart fluttering, breath thready, she sinks her fingers into the dark curls of hair now pressed against her belly. “Bode?” She asks quietly, her eyes sweeping the open doorway. Kata stands in it, her brows pulled together and a confused, frightened look in her eyes as she squeezes Mookie. Behind her, in the sunshine, a contingent of collapsed black-armored troopers dot their front lawn. He’s shaking against her, and she can feel a wet stain grow on her shirt. She realizes, distantly, that he’s saying something– “How could you, how could you ask that of me, Tayala don’t you know I need you, I need you, I can’t”– but it’s hard to see past the sea of people Bode just cut down to reach her.

They can’t be here. They can’t stay here. Bode clings to her, his large hands climbing her back as he sobs into her belly. She sinks down to her knees, gathering her large husband against her chest. He pushes his face against her throat, his frantic breathing washing hot over her skin again and again. She hums a soothing song– not the one she just transmitted to him, of course, not that one– as she holds him, rocking back and forth gently, and presses one, two, ten kisses into the crown of his head as he calms down.

Cassandra sighed. How was it that her mother always managed to find her on her bad days?

"No, mother, I haven't yet hunted today. Eaten yes, but hunted, no." Those were certainly two different things in her mind. Eating took place inside the castle, but hunting was certainly relegated to outside... unless it was an intruder or mother needed a certain misbehaving maid to be found. But then, those hunts were always the best. They usually meant fun and games before dinner.

"Why do you ask? Is the larder running low? Do I need to find you something in particular for tonight's meal?"

Katniss is such an unreliable narrator. She says "Then something unexpected happens. a big lesson for me was learning that most things are not as fragile as I’d believed. missing a class, or turning in a bad assignment, won’t instantly destroy your professor’s opinion of you. accidentally saying something harsh won’t make your friend want to end the friendship. it takes work to repair these things - it takes effort and research and sometimes a sincere apology - but you can do that because they’re not irreparably broken. what you’ve worked to build, in academia and in relationships and in life, is stronger and more enduring that your mind may teach you to believe. don’t let imagined fragility lead you to giving up
