AMERICAN GODS ⇢ 1x07 | A Prayer for Mad Sweeney
How much gold do you have? How much is in a hoard? What the fuck is a hoard? And why do you have one? I was a king, once. Okay. I was. Then they made me a bird. Then Mother Church came along and turned us all into saints, and trolls, and faeries. General Mills did the rest. So what's the appeal? What's Wednesday selling at this god-fest that you've got to get a ticket? War.

“Mad Sweeney, you look like a man who’s fallen on hard times from a great height.”

so it was pretty much confirmed that Sweeney was the one who took the bread & cream that Essie was leaving at her windows, wasn’t it?

Dying worked for me. Everyone should try it at least once. Seems like you’ve walked the earth a couple hundred years in those boots already, so, you’re due.

My Reactions to “American Gods, Episodes 7 and 8:”
Episode 7, “A Prayer For Mad Sweeney:”
Least favourite episode, in my opinion. I loved the scenes with Salim, Laura and Sweeney (especially the last one with Salim where he literally calls Sweeney an ‘unpleasant creatutre’), but I felt this one was the least needed otherwise. I felt that Essie’s plotline could have been shortened.
I do like the plot twist of Mad Sweeney being the one who caused Laura’s death on behalf of Wednesday, though. It’ll be interesting to see the fallout of knowing that truth in Season 2.
Episode 8, “Come To Jesus:”
WAY better than Episode 7 for sure! I LOVED Ostara, as well as her and Shadow totally flirting with each other half the time they interacted, but I also loved how Ostara is just...trying to hold everything together. First Wednesday and Shadow shows up, she hears there’s a war about to happen and all and Wednesday is trying to recruit her. And on top of that, Media has her bond with her as well as Ostara having to check the dead Laura to see if it’s possible to bring her back (spoiler alert: it isn’t possible). I loved Mad Sweeney and Laura’s interactions in this episode, too!
I also really liked how cunning Wednesday was in this one. Shadow is finally convinced to seriously believe in him and literally everything else, and on top of that Wednesday deliberately pushes Ostara’s buttons to get her to participate with him in the war against the New Gods.
Overall, I look forwards to Season 2 coming out next year! I definitely want to watch more when it comes out, and it’ll be interesting to see where it goes from here.
I’ll be posting a little comparison piece between the show and the book versions sometime during this month or next month, and also elaborate in that post as of which version I enjoyed better! Keep a lookout for that! XD

“I went to war once. Or was meant to. Long time back. On the eve of battle I looked into the fire... and I saw my death, sure as Sunday. I saw. I knew I would die that day if I stayed. Put on my boots, and dropped my sword, and I flew. I owe a battle.” - Mad Sweeney

Here are the prosthetics and makeup worn by Pablo Schreiber during “A Prayer for Mad Sweeney” (first season of American Gods) - for the scene of “Mad Sweeney seeing his own death”.
