A NIGHTMARE'S TRIP

Genre: Visual Novel

Pitch: The physical embodiment of a nightmare, now a young adult who's outgrown his scary ways, takes a trip to a cross-dimensional city to relax, buy anime merchandise, and make friends along the way.

My expectations: I played an exceptionally good visual novel yesterday. This looks like a big step down. It's unfair to compare the two, and I'll do my best to judge this game on its own merits, but lets not kid ourselves: There's no such thing as an "objective" review. My thoughts will be tinged by that bias.

Review:

“i got in the taxi. i was tired and i slept. i dont know how long i slept in the taxi. i was sleeping because i was tired and when i woke up i was still tired. i got out of the taxi. i stood in the line…. Many people were there. i took my video games and phone out of my pockets. i like video games and anime a man asked me to step out of the line. i do not know why. it is because i had a watch. it was hard to see under the fur that i have because i am furry and covered with fur which is why.. i dont wear clothes. that would be too hot for me because fur is hot. i took off my watch. i waited at the airport. i ate food. i went to sleep because i was tired. i got on a airplane. i slept on a airplane and played video games and ate. i like anime. then i had a trip with eating and sleeping and waiting and liking anime. now you know about the trip that i took. i hope you liked learning about A NIGHTMARE’S TRIP!!!!!”

+ The simple synth music is fine. Not good, and it doesn't loop cleanly, but it generally didn't bother me.

– So many words; so little being said. – Often difficult to read. Every character speaks in a different font, some of which are bold and legible, but they're in the minority. Not enough contrast between text and background images. Desperately in need of copy editing. – Characters are drawn in such different styles that they don't look like they belong in the same game. Backgrounds are photographs run through a simple filter, so even almost every character is a mutant, alien, demon, or sentient plant, everybody in the background is a boring human. – There are, like, five choices in the game, and they're all pointless. "Where should I eat?" the game asked. I picked the ramen restaurant. The ramen restaurant was closed, so I was immediately whisked to the other option. Awesome.
