Fanfics being stolen and uploaded on (audiobook) site "WordStream"

I wish there were no reason for an announcement like this right before Christmas… /sad /angry

What is happening?

Fanfics of people on AO3 (works from other sites could not be confirmed as of now) have been uploaded to the site https://word-stream.com.

What do we know?

The site has no legal notice - we can not see who runs or owns the site, who is behind this, etc.. All fanfics also have a ai-generated "book cover", which adds to the iffy vibes outside the fanfic stealing. Fanfics that were found there all match their originals on AO3 with title and author, mostly by tags, and by writing. The summary is often changed, but the works are definitely stolen. We checked more works and can confirm that this is not a single case but affects more works, but this is the only SFW work example we could find atm.

Assumptions after some research and digging we did:

To listen to the audiobook versions, you must create an account on that site, which leads to an info that this site has an app. Through that, the developer and potential person behind this could be someone named "Ofek Weitzman", who in term seems to be associated to a "Speechify Inc." (according to google results: Corporation Wiki Article, Speechify App Site, speechify.com).

Speechify does text to speech via an AI voice generator. It would fit the iffy ai cover vibes.

What we recommend to do:

It stands to assume that locking your works on AO3 is the only way of preventing this. So far, we've not found works that were locked on that site, so locking your works on AO3 can protect the from being (more easily) swiped by any bot etc.. Since the site has no legal notice, looking into ways to report that (it's it's illegal for a site not to have one in Germany for example) is likely an option.

Follow up on this and get the latest updated in the Fanfic Communities Network (FCN) Discord Server!

Apparently, a user called @cliffweitzman claims to own this site and to offer users to send an e-mail so this user can take your works down from the site. They answered in this post by @ekingston with this:

A comment to that from our side: This is no excuse. It should not need to be said and explained that theft of intellectual property is not acceptable. We request @cliffweitzman, if they truly run that site, to immediately take down all works that have been stolen - fanfic or potential others - and that were uploaded without the author's consent, as well as to take full responsibility for their unacceptable behaviour.

The site is back up, and seems to have taken down fanfics. After searching for the ones we found having been stolen from AO3, we couldn't find any - but that could be coincidence. According to this reblog, the stolen fanfics could only be hidden from the site and if you don't have an account on WordStream. Things are still very unclear, a statement or acknowledgement of this theft of intellectual property by @cliffweitzman is still pending.

First Vees Event Hub Event!

This will hopefully become an active and thriving place for some Vees and Staticmoth events!

The blog itself currently looks like someone with no sense of visual art is heading it, because that's true, but work has gone into the most important part! Which is our first event:

VVinter Vees (and Staticmoth Xmas)!

People who only want to write about the Vees or only want to write Staticmoth are both welcome in this event. I had very few people say they were interested, but it was still an equal amount of Vees to Staticmoth enjoyers.

Please keep an eye on this blog for the prompts! The event might take place in December, but it's a whole month affair and I wanted everyone to have enough time to do whatever they wanted for the event.

An 18+ server for people who want to get together on working for prompts, have some input on future events, and have another place to promote their creations!

So much of the talk about fanfic comments is bound up in ideas of rules and exchange and trades and so on. Lots of talk about how nobody comments anymore, but also just as lots of talk about receiving the wrong types of comments. I can sort of see why someone, especially someone who speaks English as a second language, might be intimidated by it. But at the core of it, it's really quite simple: Do you like that a fanfic exists? Does it make you happy? You can make the creator happy by leaving a comment that tells them so!

Every other consideration is kind of secondary and arguably misses the point entirely. For example there's the talk about people setting up private discord servers to discuss fanfic, and is that a good thing or a bad thing and do fans deserve spaces to discuss things away from their creators and… look, that's all too complicated. You do whatever you want. But if you love a fanfic, telling its author that you do will make them happy. And as elementary-school as it sounds, we all want to be happy together here in this world.

Can you comment on old fics? Yes. A multitude of polls have proven that there is no fanfic author ever who had a problem with that, and most of them don't even understand the question. Is that a thing on Instagram or something where leaving comments on old works hurts the algorithm or something? No clue. I only use Instagram to get ads for model trains. Over here in the fanfic world, the rule stands: If you like a work, any work, no matter how old or weird or how much the author apologises for it in the notes, if you let them know you like it, you'll make them happy.

Does it intimidate you? Do you think that surely this author of this great fic that rewired your brain already knows how good they are, and your little comment will seem insulting next to it? No, don't worry. Telling them that you like it will still make them happy.

What to comment? Fashions and opinions have changed on this over the years I've been in fandom, and today the general rule is to not include anything negative at all, neither about the work nor "I hate this fandom/pairing/trope except this time" and so on. Telling people to please update soon is right out. But at the end of the day, it's actually quite simple: Tell people that you liked their fic. If you can think of anything specific you like, mention that, if not, that's okay too.

(An aside: I also think fanfic writers could stand with being a bit more tolerant at times. Someone telling you they like your fic in not quite perfect terms is still someone telling you they like your fic.)

There are also people talking about how lack of comments will drive authors out of fandoms or fanfic writing in general, and how more comments may motivate them to write more. To tell you the truth, it's not quite as easy as that, fanfic writers stop writing for all sorts of reasons and many new ones start writing every day. I am not the biggest fan of talking about this in economic terms at all. We're a community. We'd like to make each other happy (which may take different forms depending on what sort of fanfic it is). A happy fanfic writer is its own reward.

The key here is: Don't overthink it. Don't think of reasons why you have to comment, don't think of reasons why you shouldn't be required to. Think about whether the author of the fic that you enjoyed would like to hear that you did so. The answer is always yes.

I write this post with the caveat that I was into TSP and TSPUD before discovering Cl0ck 0ut and I never joined any servers around it, so the impact to me is extremely minimal compared to many others who were heavily inspired by it. I recognize that while it's sickening to me, it's even harder for the people who joined the TSP fandom because of Cl0ck 0ut.

I'm also extremely on the fringes of the fandom in general, I've never gone out of my way to interact with people who are more well-known for their narrator designs. I don't know that this post is going to reach its intended audience that much.

With all that aside, I really want to tell the people who are extremely hurt and reeling and sick to their stomach something that I think is pretty important:

You may have been introduced to TSP from watching Cl0ck 0ut, and it may have inspired you, but it is not the thing that kept you here interested in the game. You're in this fandom because you found like-minded people, maybe through the animation sure, and continued to make connections beyond that surface-level one.

Look, I've been here before. I'm not old, but I'm in my late twenties now and I've been in fandom circles for nearly 2 decades. There were inevitably times where the fanbase learned bad things about the creator, or a specific "big time" fan whose works they liked. It does suck, it does hurt, you're more than allowed to feel betrayed and sick and stressed.

A lot of what got me through it was having other people to talk to, who understood because they were also going through it. They understood because they were in that same fandom with me, we had met through it. The thing that mattered was that I had friends I had made beyond a superficial initial connection.

You made bonds. You created things (headcanons, art, stories, theories) with other people, and you still enjoyed the initial thing, yeah, but you enjoy it more because of the extra layers of connection that it led you to! But remember, please remember, that while it was a jumping off point, and you might attach a lot of value to it for that, it didn't do the work. You and other people did that. And that's the real valuable thing. That doesn't have to be stained with the bad feelings, I promise. It can and has evolved past the initial connection.

It's gonna sting for a while. That's understandable. If you need to take a break from creating, no one can blame you. But keep your connections with other people. Keep your friends.

(And if you made things that were directly inspired by Cl0ck 0ut designs or initial story, I can understand if you're feeling extremely uncomfortable with making more of it. I have a couple fanfics I was reading that were based off it.

At the end of the day, do what makes you most comfortable, even if that includes putting it down and never picaking it up again; but know that people liked what you were making, again, not because it was Cl0ck 0ut based, but because you were doing interesting and unique things with the premise. That's what fandom does with any media, and the story you were crafting does not, I think, need to be wholly discarded despite its premise having...'issues'.)

Halsin's Kids

Let me talk a bit more Halsin headcanons, because I am babysitting a server (for work - on my weekend) and I am bored. So... In the epilogue Halsin talks about how he has adopted a dozen kids. Which is fair. Like, the man deserves a family, for god's sake. But the question is of course who those kids are.

Mind you, in most of my fanfic writing I do ignore the epilogue. One, because the epilogue came out at a time when I had already written two longer fics for it and did not feel particularly inclined to change much about that. Two, because fuck Karlach's canonical ending. She gets her engine fixed, she is fine, she gets to travel with Wyll and Shadowheart along the Sword Coast.

But I still like most of Halsin's stuff. Him adopting orphans? I love that, gods darn it! I love him creating a new grove by Reithwin, too, where he can be close to Thaniel. Especially given it is fairly clear that this is the area he has grown up in.

Something I still wonder about though: Which kids did he adopt?

I mean, generally speaking everything is fair game, I guess. There are more than enough orphans in the game. I have seen qutie a bit of stuff on him adopting Yenna (in my stuff she gets adopted by Gale, btw, after they bond over cooking). I ended up having him adopt most of the assorted tiefling orphans, including a very, very disgruntled Mol, who does need no parent, thank you very much, and at some point Arabella, too. Which I assume might be interesting, too, because I cannot help the feeling that she is a chosen of Silvanus. Which... sure, gives her a lot of power. But also... She is still nine. Being a chosen does not negate this fact.

In the end I gave Halsin eight of the tiefling kids of those who we know that survive. Partly, too, because Halsin does feel responsible for them. He allowed them in the Emerald Grove, only to go missing, which ended up with them getting endangered, of course. And in the end quite a few of the parents quite obviously died.

I ended up adding up two human kids to the mix as well. I mean, most people living in the city of Baldur's Gate are humans, so there should be quite a few of them orphaned as well.

And... yeah. I really want to write more with him and those kids. Because I love parenting fics. And I already know that once Arabella joins the family, there is going to be a bit of a rivalry between her and Mol.

We created the Soul Eater Writer Support Squad to help spread the love to all writers in the Soul Eater community. Our goal is to change the culture around leaving feedback on fanfiction and encourage more comments/reviews/kudos/etc.

What is this event?

Every January, April, July, and October, members of the squad will band together to give comments/reviews/kudos/etc. to various fanfics across the Soul Eater community. They will keep track of quality comments/reviews (something with more oomph than just one emoji or a "good job"), and the squad member with the most comments/reviews will receive a feature on our Hall of Fame.

Who can join the squad?

Anyone! You just have to be a fan of Soul Eater or you aren't going to enjoy what you're reading! But you can be a writer as well, an artist of some sort, just a general SE fan, everyone is welcome.

What if I don't know what to say?

Keysmashing, emojis, favorite quotes, "AHHHHHHHH" are all welcome comments/reviews, however we are definitely looking to spread more quality reviews so as not to spam emojis and hope to win a fic in return. Start with the above and pour out your heart, anything you have to say will most likely be appreciated by the writer. Keep in mind that the best comments of each quarter will also be featured on our Hall of Fame!

What are these challenges being posted?

We will be posting weekly challenges throughout the month as an added bonus if you want to do more for writers than just leave comments/reviews. They are completely optional and do not count toward the total comments/reviews for features on the Hall of Fame, but they are much appreciated and spread the love even more!

Hey folks, we'd like your opinions on the idea of Phic Phight being it's own server, instead of being part of the DP Fanfic server. We also have a google form so you guys can expand on your answer if you'd like, but also give us any general suggestions, comments or feedback related to the upcoming Phic Phight.

Under the readmore is just some detailed explanations as to why some of the changes.

What would happen if we made a Phic Phight server?

Phic Phight section of the DP fanfic server will be archived from general view. NOT DELETED. Archived. Six months will be given for people to collect what they want before it gets archived. However, you'd still be able to request temporary access at any time to look/get what you want/need.

Joining the discord will become mandatory for Phic Phight participants. You do not have to stay after Phic Phight, and you can be as active/inactive as you wish.

Better event organization information, since users will be pinged when prompts drop and any other important information. Everybody will get it at the same time.

Since it'd be it's own server, we'd be more willing to expand on and add specific features, channels and bots for Phic Phight events.

What if Phic Phight stayed within the DP Fanfic server?

Phic Phight participants will start taking on full responsibility for checking the Phic Phight tumblr in late March/early April for prompts. Mods will no longer be directly messaging them to people.

Related to the above, but no more extensions based on people not getting their prompts. Extensions will still be offered in situations such as mods releasing prompts late or other situations out of user/mod control that effects Phic Phight.

Not having to join yet another goddamn Danny Phantom discord server.

We will continue making updates and changes in-server as needed.

Why would discord membership be mandatory if we made our own server?

It makes it easier for the mods to coordinate everything and for users to communicate. We can more directly answer questions, clarify confusion, give everybody updates at the exact same time, dedicate our announcement spaces to only phic phight, etc. Users can better connect with their team as well and encourage each other.

A big part of Phic Phight is community, especially since more recent additions have made it a good idea to work with your team to help make sure all prompts are filled. Since we're currently attached to the fanfic server, it felt unfair to require membership, but as our own server, we would operate a bit more similarly to Invisobang. Specifically where we're encouraging more collaboration. We're writing phics for each other as well as for our own personal reasons.

What kind of changes would a Phic Phight server bring?

We'd be more willing to expand and add Phic Phight specific features as users and mods seem fit. Current ideas include:

More writing bots

More phic-phight specific channels to collaborate

Random number generators, so you can roll for a prompt or make decisions based on a randomized number

Hosting phic phight focused events, such as regular sprint nights

This is just the current thoughts, but we're open to more ideas within the google form!

This server would also, in general, make it a lot easier to get information strictly for Phic Phight.

Why are mods no longer going to be sending out prompts list? How will I get my prompts? Why no more extensions?

Phic Phight prompts and teams are always consistently released 2-3 days before April 1st, and Phic Phight always lasts the entire month of April. Meaning, you can expect prompts around March 31st at the LATEST. In recent years, they are always released both in the Fanfic server as well as our official tumblr. In the past, due to tumblr constantly changing how messaging works, general confusion and the amount of participants, it's become too difficult for mods to personally make sure everybody has their prompts list.

It wasn't too bad when we had 30 participants, but now we're often getting 100+ people. That's a lot of people to individually check got prompts. It's just becoming harder and harder to make sure everybody got their list, but since we consistently release them around the same time, we decided that regardless of whether we make a new server or not, it's now going to be YOUR responsibility to check for prompts around March 31st.

Having a server means that we'd just be @ everybody-ing when they drop, versus not having a server, where they will still be posted and pinged role, as well as tumblr. Regardless of whether we make a server or not, we will still post the prompts list to tumblr and have it pinned for easy viewing.

Related, we have extended deadlines if a lot of people did not get their prompts, due to the above mentioned tumblr problem. This change would mean that we basically will not be doing event-wide extensions anymore based on tumblr users getting prompts late, which had been a semi-common past problem. We will still offer extensions in events such as mods releasing prompts late or similar situations

Crisp air greeted Alfons as he and Elbert exited through glitzed doors in hurried steps and whispered voices, the echoings of pious laughter quieted as heavy doors shut with a thud. The mellow air carried a calming scent of the decaying leaves around them, an odd pairing as Elbert sucked in labored breaths. 

His eyes mimicked the night sky; dark, nearly vacant with only a shadow of his earlier self remaining, and seeing such a sight caused Alfons to inwardly berate himself as he ushered him towards the carriage.

“Come on, now.” He murmured, helping guide Elbert's shaking hands to the entryway, a firm hand on the lord's back.

It seemed to exhaust Elbert further, as if it took all the willpower he had left to climb up two steps and collapse onto the seating.

Alfons tsked to himself, hopping in with more grace in comparison and shutting the door tight behind him, slipping the lock through it's hinge.

“Elbie, look at me.”

Unresponsive at first, it took a few snaps until Elbert's eyes looked in his general direction. His brows were furrowed as his pallid skin held a sheen of sweat upon his features. 

Another clench in Alfons guts occurred, his throat momentarily tight as an intrusive focus on the beauty still held within the sight took over him. 

He pushed the thought away violently, schooling his face along with it while he yanked his hand free of his glove.

“Look at me, we're back at Crown.” he murmured, slipping his fingers against the sweat-slickened nape of Elbert's neck.

Elbert's eyes swam, confusion interlaced with an unnerving calm. “...crown?”

“That's right. You were feeling faint, so we're sitting on the sofa now.”

He blinked before beginning to recline further against Alfons, sighing, “...ah… you're right. But why…?”

“Why are you feeling faint? My, you've lost time again, haven't you, Elbie. You skipped your ‘dinner’ again. You know how much the mother hen frets over you doing so, seems like it caught up to you again.”

Alfons waited as Elbert contemplated the words, watching as he closed his eyes in thought, nodding faintly.

“You're… right… I didn't have dinner today…”

“Mhm. So we're resting right now, until you can move again.”

The tension dropped in Elbert's shoulders, sighing miserably. On instinct, Alfons’ fingers slipped away from his skin, threading gently through the fine, blonde hair. Petting. Soothing. 

The repetitive motion worked to lull both of their hearts into a calmer state. Alfons kept a sigh to himself, feeling little relief despite it.

“I may… fall asleep on you…”

“It's nothing the others haven't seen before, Elbie. It's quite alright.”

“Will you keep watch?”

The rhythmic stroking stuttered, paused for a mere second as Alfons regarded the childlike plea. He thought back through the guests at the party, the lapse of focus that led to Elbert in such a state.

Slowly, he began to card through the soft locks again, whispering.

“As always.”

Sam the Sea Anemone (nicknamed 'B!Sam') - A sports fanatic and a bit of a jock, Sam is the 'fun' one of the group, who usually gets himself into situations that he can't get out of all because of his stupidity. The comic series ran for 12 issues and was panned all across the boards. 2005 - KinitoPET Virtual Assistant V2 releases, putting faith back into the franchise. The original KinitoPET Virtual Assistant was not sentient, contrary to the original KinitoPET Game! Instead, KinitoPET V2 is the sentient one, though not always. Instead, it functions as a regular assistant that, once treated as if it were real, turns sentient. I need to rant about that because i don't know how to feel about it, honestly. So here's the context first :

So i'm on an ateez fandom discord like an actual one (i won't tell the one because it's not really important and i'm not feeling safe enough from them to tell the name BUT i digress) and like okay so there's minors on that discord, minors AND adults, so of course, the speaking about sex with ateez is an absolute no, and i absolutely understand that. I mean, as a literal nsfw blog, i also have rules, and i block any minor/ageless blog that interacts with my content.

There's a few people that sexualise ateez on that discord, which i'm against ONLY because there's minors present. Now, most of the people on that discord + staff are absolutely against "sexualising" ateez in general, not only on Discord.

People on one of the principal chats of the server said things like "gotta stop this we are in 2024" and "they're humans like us, just stop".

Apparently, someone had said of Ateez on the discord, "i want them to run me over" (i get it. It's on a discord with minors, but honestly???) and people are shocked and disgusted (like bffr)

It's because of people so strict like that even outside a discord that we (and i talk about me, my mutuals and the people that follow me), are finding our safe space on Tumblr because it's pretty much the only platform in general (apart from some +18 ateez discord servers) where we can say freely what we want to do. It's almost like they're infantilized at that point with those people, please, they're grown ass men who literally make their concert like a magic mike show, and also the same people who make sexual songs almost every comeback, at least one per album, and who put themselves almost naked sometimes on purpose!! The same people who post parts of their body that they know Atiny ADORE just because of fanservice!! And they definitely know of the smuts and fanfics atp... Bffr!!!

Another thing, those people were talking about the thing with the cameramen during the concert who zooms a few times on the guys crotch, and some of them were saying things like "that's embarrassing" and like "the cameraman should not do that". Someone even said, "Maybe they did the concert like that because of the fanservice, but if they force them to do that, it's a problem." Babes, listen to me, knowing ateez at that point, i'm pretty sure they would have asked seriously the staff and cameraman to stop zooming on them crotches.

People should stop being shocked and sensitive about what others say about Ateez. At least we are not writing very explicit things to them directly. I keep my thoughts safe from them because i'll never know how they'll react, and idk them personally. But like, almost slutshaming people about a group that is literally sex freaks atp (for fanservice mostly i think, but pretty sure they're really horny like most of humans) is not okay at all Just leave us alone, i'm never going to say to the actual group my slut thoughts about them anyway (i would be clinically and mentally more than insane for that and by the way, on that same discord i speak about, the warning note about sexualisation of the members said "Ateez are not objects, and are not to be sexualised" and also a thing who says as a resume that the guys would be shocked and hurt if they learned about being sexualised, bitch please 🙄)

Hi, just been wondering about one thing. Why do you tag all of your fanfics with th dsmp fandom tag? Most of them have nothing to do with the server, other than maybe the names of characters that were in that story. I think majority of your fanfics would fit better as the general Minecraft (Video game) fandom tag. Of course, I'm not telling you to change, just curious about the choice and I think the general minecraft tag would give your works more attention and recognition

Hmmm. True, my fics dont have anything to do with the server, but its pretty clear that the characters are all inspired off said server, and even if its not the about the dsmp lore itself, i often include bits from it (refrencing lmanburg and such for place holder town names lol) plus the dsmp tag is more of a catch all for dsmp fandom works and while im not really writing about the Lore so much, im still in that fandom. im still dsmp category, bc im including Tommyinnit and Philza Minecraft and such in the storyline

The Minecraft tag itself is more general but i also feel like its less relevant to my fics bc of that, i mean, my fics have nothing to do with block game at all. Take for instance my pirate au. Where is the Minecraft in that. But they do have elements of dsmp! The characters and such. Hence, dsmp tag! Yay!

SPN Reader Insert FanFic Writing Challenge: Gender Studies

In our Discord server today, we had a great talk about Reader Insert fics and what tips and tricks we use to entertain our audience without alienating them. At the end of the chat, the subject of Gender Neutral Reader Inserts came up. The main point we all agreed on was that we need to strip away gender stereotypes and just write a basic person in order for a GNRIC (Gender Neutral Reader Insert Character) to work. We tried listing some of those gender stereotypes and did not come up with many besides women being more emotional and men being less likely to discuss feelings. That discussion brought us to this challenge.

Because we want as many writers as possible to join us for this, all participants will be entered into a drawing to win prizes from the Prize List!

What (earns you one entry into the drawing) - Write a one-shot two ways: once with a Female Reader Insert Character (FRIC) and then write the same story with a Male Reader Insert Character (MRIC). Pick a trope and a genre (use your favorites or you can use our SPN Prompt Generator for ideas), figure out a scenario, and then write the same basic story for each gender.

Bonus (earns you an additional entry into the drawing) - Write a third fic but with a GNRIC.

Additional Bonus (earns you an additional entry into the drawing) - Once you've written both, tell us how writing each one made you feel. What basic differences did you keep in mind as you were writing? What problems did you expect to run into, were those the same problems you actually had while writing, and what unexpected problems did you encounter?

Fic parameters -

At least 1000 words.

The pairing does not need to be romantic, but you will earn an extra entry into the drawing if the pairing is romantic.

The fic does not need to have smut, but you will earn an additional entry into the drawing if there is any level of smut. (Kissing and some fondling or something like phone sex is the minimum to earn the extra entry.)
