julien baker live lyric changes masterpost

the many ways that julien changes her lyrics over time and seamlessly alters the lyrics and meanings of her songs to maintain a level of personal authenticity has become so fascinating to me and many others so i thought it'd be nice to do some research and compile as many as i can. enjoy! or cry! whichever!

the original lyrics are in parenthesis, changes are bolded, roughly in chronological order and i’ve added timestamped links to performances [x] where i can! i use mostly youtube because it's the most accessible. some of these seem to be permanent changes and others are just occasional, probably depending on how she's vibing with the song at the time (i'm assuming). let me know of any i’ve missed!

Omg i have this angst to fluff mermaid x billy idea so like she gives him these cute little gifts on the boats ledge but the crew keeps shoving them off and she one day finds all her gifts at the bottom of the seafloor right below where she places them and shes just confused and sad

on days when the boat was out on the sea, and Billy was adamant that he didn’t want you coming aboard for your safety, you’d leave little shells and sea glass for him on the railing. Once he’d taken them, gushed to you when you met him again that the shells were “Absolutely gorgeous, baby. Can’t thank y’enough.”

But the past voyages, no matter how beautiful the gifts you left on the railing were, he made no comment. You told yourself that he just forgot, but it definitely irked you. One day, you found yourself following the route the boat was meant to be on, swimming along the sea floor and occasionally looking up to see if the boat was above you. So far, nothing.

So you resign to collect shells along the way. You’re humming to yourself, happily collecting sea glass and smoothed pebbles, until you realize that you recognize quite a few of them. A purple shell you’d been tempted to keep for yourself, but thought Billy would love it more. A peice of sea glass you thought was shaped a bit like a lily. A small conch. A rock you specifically remembered. Piling up along the ship’s route.

Oh, it hurt to think that Billy was throwing your gifts overboard. But all the evidence pointed to it! Upon finding a little shell that you thought was the same shade of blue as Billy’s eyes, your felt such a strong blow to your heart that you turned around right then and went home; clearly your gifts weren’t appreciated, you wouldn’t burden him with any more.

It was childish, but when you saw his boat docked at the port, you came back to that cove you’d always meet him at. Perhaps you just felt like telling him off.

Damn him, when Billy approached you, there was a big smile on his face. He called out your name, unlacing his boots and ditching them with his socks to rest his feet in the water. He reached for your cheek, intending to pull you into a kiss, but you huffed and drew away from him.

“You could have told me you didn’t like my gifts.” You huffed, crossing your arms over your chest. Billy’s eyebrows drew together. Damn him for feigning confusion!

“What? What gifts?” Billy leaned away from you enough to look at you proper. “I’m not dumb!” You scoffed. “Just because I don’t get human things doesn’t mean I’m dumb. I’m very smart underwater, Billy, and I’m smart enough to know you throw the shells I leave on the railing overboard.” Billy just stared at you, those baby blues round, taken aback by your outburst.

“Baby, if— if you ever gave me anythin’, I didn’t get it.” Billy shakes his head, reaching for your hand. You let him squeeze your fingers, though you remain stiff and skeptical. “Please believe me. I haven’t gotten anythin’ in weeks, I thought you got tired of giftin’ me things.”

You forgot to be mad for a moment, shaking your head and putting back on a mean face. “Then why’d I find it all on the seafloor?” Billy’s other hand comes to gently stroke over each of your fingers absentmindedly.

“Crew musta cleaned off the deck.” He shrugged. Both of his rugged hands enveloped your dainty one now. “Honey, m’sorry. M’sure they were really beautiful.”

You huffed, looking down at your lap and smoothing your other hand down over your scales sheepishly. “I should be apologizing for accusing you.” Billy snorts, shakes his head and leans forward to kiss your cheek. “Mmm, well. M’ sure we can find another reason t’be mad at me while we’re here.” Billy cooed, bringing the smile back to your lips.

After a lingering moment of quiet, he speaks up again, this time murmuring against your soft lips. “You ain’t even a little dumb. Not on the surface, not below the water. Trust me, baby, I ain’t smart enough to play you.” Billy relishes in the breathy giggle his self-deprecating joke brings out of you. Christ, he could just make you laugh forever if you’d let him. “‘Sides, I don’t wanna. I wouldn’t tell lie t’you, sweet thing. I can promise you that.”

Billy was a man of his word.
