November 2023 wrap up 📚
Finally had some time to read, and having read some great books early in the month motivated me to keep going! So many good books, series, and manga volumes that I loved this month that has me excited to keep the momentum going!
I’m also now finally caught up with my goodreads challenge which is amazing, and puts me in a great place for December

finished the elements of cadence duology by rebecca ross today and that was a lovely time. i find it really funny that the romances were presented to me as the selling point though (i really wanted to read a romance when i started this) because i cared far, far more about the plot in both of them.
the mystery in a river enchanted completely drew me in and the worldbuilding was charming and very very enjoyable. both books felt like folklore and like being told a folk tale, i could so easily imagine the magic coming from the pages. a fire endless took a bit longer for me to warm up to (ha), it was fine but i wasn't enjoying it as much as the first until about the 60% mark when it really, really took off. i finished it today and i kept bursting into tears in the last 20%!
the story in both was really really nice and i really enjoyed the characters. the romances, again, did feel a little lackluster to me? especially jack and adaira, i enjoyed their individual arcs but never really bought them as a couple until the later part of a fire endless unfortunately. torin and sidra felt much more real and i enjoyed their dynamic more, and them as characters as well. torin's growth in particular felt quite well done to me.
there were some plot threads in a fire endless that kind of felt dropped out of nowhere and that could have been resolved better (rab pierce anyone?) but overall, this was a really really nice time.

It’s not often I give 5⭐️ ratings, and according to my StoryGraph these were the only three that made the cut in 2022. The Elements of Cadence duology has me in an absolute chokehold right now.

a love letter to elements of cadence
dear elements of cadence duology,
you’re the set of two books that rekindles a sense of escapism. with faith and a set of experiences so humbling. you’re the set of two books that choose nature’s balance, and essentially, share that the universe sends us challenges they know we’re strong enough to overcome.
pretty simply, the set of two books that hold my heart.
like a lovely soul once said: from my heart, to each and every one of yours, i humbly bow.
thank you so much for being here :)

Haven’t updated y’all (no one asked) on my recent reads!
Finished The War of Lost Hearts series by Carissa Broadbent. I struggled through part of the series—I think it suffered from the ‘too much’ gene, but the ending kind of nailed it for me and made the journey overall worth it
Read King of Battle and Blood in like 24 hours— light on the plot, heavy on the ‘I want to fuck a sexy vampire’. And that’s valid! Written kind of like a fan fiction (affectionate).
Next Up— A Fire Endless (Sequel to A River Enchanted) IMHO, ARE wipes the floor with Divine Rivals and idk why that book is getting so much hype this series.
ANYWAY, finishing King of Battle and Blood puts me at 50 books for the year 🥳
#i told myself when I get to 60 books (my goal) i am allowed to reread the entire SJMCU#soooooo looking forward to that#Megan reads#king of battle and blood#a river enchanted#a fire endless#war of lost hearts#mother of death and dawn

What an amazing duology by Rebecca Ross! I swear I'd read her grocery list at this point, I love her writing so much!
I want to live in Cadence. I want to wander the isle and wear a plaid and meet the spirits. Her writing is just lush and atmospheric, and it feels like you're right there with them. I loved the story and the characters so much.
Considering that this book had two of my least favorite tropes, having your couples separated for a majority of the book and a pregnancy, and I still loved it??? That speaks volumes. I do also think this was slightly similar in aspects of the first book with Torin being unable to speak in the first and then the second he's in the spirit world unable to be heard or seen. But it was still so good.
The Breccans were fascinating and that whole blood jewel thing was so cool! And Sidra rolled up like this poison ain't shit. I do kind of wish we got a little more of the west side to really see and understand them. I liked Innes and David a lot, and I wish Moray and even Rab got slightly more focus so we can fully get to know their intentions and motivations. Both kind of felt a little mainstream bad guy who wants power or treats women like a thing to be had.
You know I love a bittersweet ending and dislike characters who come back after "death" but I'm glad Jack did! I think losing his craft was an acceptable loss and that I want the music to be our life was so corny and full of love. I love how the others all changed in ways to accept the places life put them in.
IT WAS JUST SO GOOD

Ross succeeds at bringing to life majestic scenery of folkloric Scottish highlands. The world building and story pacing are what sets this novel apart, but I’m not sure I will return to the isle for A Fire Endless.

Goodreads reading challenge wrapup is here!
I definitely read less this year than the last few, but I also had a lot of changes this year. I lost a lot of my free time, and I changed how I spend some of that free time. Still, I read a lot of good books this year, and that's the most important thing.
Now let's hope 2024 brings some even better books my way ~
