you know i think part of, not a huge part mind you but still part of, the reason Disney animal companions don't work any more is because they don't usually have the same narrative weight animal companions in past movies did. This is especially true for pre Tangled movies, where the animals were allowed to drive parts of the plot and have dialouge.
The Mice from Cinderella are a good example. Not only did we get to see the dynamic between them and Cinderella, but if their hadn't all decided to make the dress, Ella's step sisters wouldn't have torn it to shreds, and her tears would not have called the fairy godmother.
Flounder, Scuttle and Sebastian are a lesser example (animated film) but they still had enough sway and were autonomous enough to help the narrative (mind you it's been a while since i have seen either movie, especially in TLM's case so they could have done more than I remember.)
I'm including the Gargoyles or Djali from HonD here because one was added into the narrative and aren't animals and the other was based off a pre existing animal in the original narrative.
But i digress. There are probably a lot of good examples in pre Tangled Disney movies, especially in movies before the Disney Reminiscence. And I say pre Tangled but really I think I mean like, pre the loss of the animation department. Pre the Disney Digital era.
After that, the animal sidekicsk would have humanesque mannerisms, but no real will outside of sticking with their respective character. They typically do one or tow things, but nothing major. And some you remember more than others, and they don't speak. Not usually anyhow. There were exceptions but the only animal outside of a live action remake that spoke that i remember vividly is Tamatoa and hes not really a companion. He's an antagonistic force.
But i'm of course behind, and there are a few movies I have not seen in a while, so i could be wrong. I probably am wrong but i was letting my mind wander while trying and failing to hatch a shiny fuecocoa and this is where my brain went.
and this is going off of if animal companions worked at all in didney films
plus i just think the mice are neat
#ignore me im rambling and i'm not like#a film student or really all that educated in animation or writing#or how narratives work#i'm not a reliable source#i'm just some autistic perosn whose brain is wandering while i do a mind numbing task

You've shown your work in galleries, right? I used to volunteer at an art gallery and your lovely art feels like it would be right at home in one
Hi anon, thank you, that's very kind.
I've actually had the experience that I have found a lot of young artists in my peer group did (and... I unfortunately suspect still do), which is as an Illustrator we don't quite fit in Fine Arts spaces. The reason a lot of us started drawing was a response to a piece of animation or film or writing that spoke to us, or we wanted to make something aesthetically pleasing, and that doesn't really fit with what contemporary art wants.
My professors hated my work, because their opinion was art isn't supposed to be fun or pretty. My stuff hasn't been in a gallery since 2008 because it was a requirement of my degree to graduate, and my drawing prof at the time was a huge asshole about it the day after the opening (you know, couldn't have given me any of that 'advice' before we hung it all up). I haven't really thought to try again because he made it such a miserable experience.
Anyway I don't say all of this for sympathy, rather just to assure folks in similar situations that... yeah it's not just you. Good educators ask about your interests and try their best to foster them even if its outside their expertise or tastes (my high school art teacher was so supportive of her students that drew anime!), but you will encounter a lot of people who will look down on you for being different, unfortunately. I think a lot of people just take the bad grade or drop out, but my solution was to treat it like a commission for a shitty client.
He was an asshole but I wrung that A out of him, because I found out what he liked and did that, and the stuff I considered 'fun' I kept totally separate from my school work. I made so much ugly art that I'm actually currently in the process of throwing out, but hey, his threat to have me removed from the program went no where 👍

I'm the previous anon who was talking about Indian Colonial history
I do follow you but I wanted to remain anonymous because I'm kinda shy 😭. You can call me Madhuri so that it's clear who I am
So I hadn't really put much thought into Shaan being a direct employee of the British monarchy until the other anon pointed it out and the more I think of it, the more weirded out I get because in a fictional novel, I feel that the author has the responsibility to make their content respectful to all groups of people and this move was kind of thoughtless.
Indians were treated like shit when the British governed our land. Basically, the British arrived as cloth traders and by creating this elaborate debt trap for rural weavers, they took over our economy and gained trade monopoly. They got some tax cessations from different kings and finally in the Battle of Plassey, they took over Bengal, a super super important place because it was in the plains, had a long coastline and was one of the most industrialised towns.
They started taxing people to hell and back with no regard for their well being. They told our kings they would provide them arms and forces to protect themselves against other rulers all while instigating whatever the opposite of peace is (I literally cannot think of a work for this, I'm so sorry)
Indians were forced to pay them, work for them without pay and make goods for them at extremely nominal amounts while the British got all the profit. We were kidnapped from our own lands and sent to plantations. There was this inland immigration act which did not allow workers to even exit tea gardens without written permission which was rarely given. They shut down our press and arrested our revolutionaries. Our people were forced to fight in the army. The first revolution actually started because the army was being forced to use bullets greased with pig fat and cow fat one of which was haram for muslims and the other was the product of an animal holy to the Hindus.
They decimated our country and the impact is still felt today.
I have watched a lot of movies about colonialism in India and one of the most chilling lines Ive heard was something along the lines of 'A bullet costs one pound by the time it reaches your gun Soldier. Are you really going to waste it on brown trash' this was followed by the soldiers beating a mother to death in front of her daughter and the entire village.
I'll recommend some movies to you. They are fiction but manage to capture the history so so well. You can find these on Netflix btw.
1) Lagaan- it's about taxation during a time of drought and a surreal way to escape it
2) RRR- honestly, I had watched some part of it but couldn't watch further because of how chilling it was and how hard it hit but it is considered to be amazing
3) Rang De Basanti- It's about college students shooting a film about freedom fighters and it alternates with the story of the revolutionaries and their parallels with the characters. These students are changed forever when one act makes them question the entire system and they become revolutionaries themselves. The ending was surprising and I could feel my heart being ripped out of my chest
Hey, Madhuri! No worries, I totally understand wanting to stay anonymous, I’m literally the same way on here so I get it.
Thank you so much for this! Yeah, my history classes definitely didn’t go over enough about any of this, but Ill be reading more about everything this week, because it’s important and I want to learn more. It’s clear there is an entire history between Britain and India that I only know the very tip of, so thank you again for writing this all out. I’m sure a lot of people probably don’t know much about this (unfortunately, since our textbooks tend to… you know… veer on the side of the oppressors), so this will all be incredibly educational to anyone reading it. Feel free to send more my way whenever you want! I love this!
I’ve heard awesome things about RRR, but didn’t know what it was about. I’m gonna watch it this weekend! And that last movie sounds really good too! Thanks for the recs!!!
As for Shaan… I honestly think Casey just wasn’t thinking. This isn’t in defense of them, an author should always think about what they’re doing and how it could show up on page or screen, but I truthfully think they just wanted to fill that role with some sort of minority and picked Indian because of the large UK Indian population. I’d bet all of the money in my wallet ($20) that Casey doesn’t know any more than the vague basics of everything you’ve told me. I noticed that they described Nora, who’s Jewish, using some stereotypical Jewish traits too (I can write more on this if anyone wants, don’t want to hijack this post). It really was a guess-and-pick of races and ethnicities for them. I love how diverse the book is, but it’s sorta clear it was done for the spectacle, not for any real heartwarming reason. Casey knew it would probably sell better, since it would be talked about as an incredibly varied collection of characters, I don’t think they thought about more than that, or didn’t think it would matter because of the positives.
Do I think Casey meant any direct hurt with it? No.
Do I think that Casey’s lack of understanding or having any knowledge beyond their contained worldview causes harm indirectly? Yes.

images taken by yours truly.
Oh, Benilde. Yeaahhh.. Benilde. That is now, as of the time writing this, the college I will be enrolling in to pursue my Multimedia arts fixation. It was my first time entering the campus on December, during their tour. I arrived there on time, around 8:40 AM I was already in the main Taft Campus. It was.. such a dream to get in there, so much so, I don't remember what mostly happened- but we tackled the 16 floors of the building, from top to bottom.
The higher buildings were reserved for architecture and interior design students, where the environment was very warehouse-y which architecture students in particular found inspiring, and we saw their 3D made plates. Down and down, we went through the film atrium, which had a lot of tech, animation which had cintiqs and many animation-programs, multimedia arts, my future floor, where it was all rounded and was shared with the photography students. The canteen, at the 12th floor, was huge. That's where most of the art events and bands during friday have their music sessions.
It felt like such a dream coming here, and even if I felt alone, I felt really seen and safe in an educational institution.
Animo, Benilde. Be Like No Other. See you once again starting September!
- 🎯 Bullet.

Conceptualisation | The First Steps
My name is Drew (yes, that's me), and I am a 2D animator and writer.
"Your final film will define your entrance to the animation industry. What do you want to be known for? What kind of job interests you? It is also the best opportunity you will have for indulging your imagination and working solidly on a single idea for an elongated stretch of time. What ideas have you been yearning to bring into the world? What is the best project to demonstrate all of the skills you have learned so far? What does the world need right now? This module places an equal emphasis on the quality of the idea and technical prowess."
This brief, despite it's flexibility, is possibly one of my most challenging undertaking yet. The brief requires us to create a final cinematic piece, in which we can bring any story that we have been thinking of to life, as long as it relates to something within our degree programme. This could even be a video game. As such, I got thinking about what kind of story that I really wanted to bring to the table.
Concept I : Solarpunk
The first idea I had was about a world like ours, but powered by clean energy. It would be technologically advanced and focus on humans being one with nature. The ideal world, with magic having become a mundane thing, set in my own city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. In reality, this is a world I have been dreaming of since my childhood, which I someday hope to bring into the world as an expanded universe with books, TV and other media.
In connection with this, I have briefly thought about a thesis statement for my dissertation; How can animation be used as a catalyst for anti-consumerism and a solarpunk society? I plan to look at pieces like "Dear Alice" by The LINE Animation, which feature a Solarpunk society in a positive light.
My main inspiration for potential story ideas come from Hilda, a children's cartoon. What does the world need right now? In my opinion, that is a comforting story, about real life stakes and moving on from modern loss. One initial idea I have is a film about accepting that people leave, and not forever; and that it is a bittersweet thing. The film follows the adventures of two college students, who attempt to complete a bucket list of activities that they always wanted to do together before one of them leaves for Toronto, Canada to pursue their higher education. Magical Hijinks ensue along the way, from tuk chases in Pettah, to underground rock concerts and bar fights, to riding on the backs of massive spirits with the city of Colombo sprawling beneath them Some themes I want to focus on are The End of Childhood, Comfort, Nostalgia, Love, Loss, Spirituality in harmony with Technology, and Acceptance. Other inspirations come from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Last Summer, and Jake Wyatt.
As of right now, my only gripe with this story idea is that it may be too cliche. One piece of writing advice that I look to in times like these is to never write about the flames of war, but to tell stories about the small pair of charred socks by the side of the cracked pavement. All this is to say that sometimes, stories within a world can be more impactful than stories about a world.
Concept II : Black July
The second idea for a film I had revolves around a couple; a singer and a filmmaker in love in 80s Sri Lanka, during the Sinhala/Tamil Racial Conflict. A film about filmmaking and the creator's struggle. This story follows a guitarist trying to find his place in the world, who is filmed by his boyfriend. Romance amidst chaos. I have connected the premise of this film to an initial idea on a thesis statement for my Dissertation; How accurately has Sri Lankan film represented Black July over the decades?
For this idea, I was inspired by more somber works, such as Tatsuki Fujiimoto's Goodbye Eri, Donald Glover's Awaken, My Love! and J.J Abrams' S. The film would focus on the themes of The Creator vs The Creation, Artistry, Imposter Syndrome, and The Struggle of being a young artist.
The issue that I have with this idea is as while I have a premise in mind, I cannot envision a clear story or timeline of events for this animation. This requires further research going forward.
Concept III : Disabilities as Strength
This idea was heavily inspired by the idea of Toph Beifong from Avatar. Toph is a character who is blind, but the writers focus on her more as a character as opposed to being blind as her main personality trait. This lead me to think of a short children's story featuring characters with disabilities, who are unencumbered by those hinderances. The world itself is once again inspired by Hilda, this time being a forested world filled with magical creatures.
For a potential thesis statement, this time I decided to look at the story of my piece; The impact of animation and haptics on the empowerment of people with disabilities.
While this is a strong topic, I run the risk of coming across as Ableist through my work. If I were to cut any of the topics I have chosen thus far, this would be it purely for the reason of being accidentally offensive.
Concept IV : The Post
From here we take a hard left for my final idea, which revolves around creating an HD2D or 2D game where you play as a postman, delivering mail to the residents of the town, connecting the townsfolk and unravelling bits of their lives in the process. The story would follow the player delivering letters to 4 NPCs in any order. Depending on the order the player chooses, the ending of the story would be different.
The world would be a quaint, quiet town by the sea and the game would be quite small. Community would be the main focus of this hypothetical game, as well as Kindness, Love, Age, Timelessness, Humans in harmony with Nature. I looked to A Short Hike, Laika: Aged Through Blood, Steven Universe, Pokemon, and Chef RPG for inspiration when thinking of this outcome.
Sound design would also play a pivotal role in bringing the world to life. Thus, the thesis statement for my dissertation in this outcome would be focusing on the impact of video game soundtracks on big band jazz and jazz curriculum.
Now What?
From here, I plan on sitting with my ideas more and thinking of bringing more depth to these concepts. Then, I will rework them where I see fit, narrow them down to one concept I am committed to and develop that further before going into Pre Production.

The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
July 25, 2023
HUNTER BIDEN'S 'JOHNSON' AND THE REAL SCANDAL
There was a surprise witness at the recent House Oversight Committee hearing on an alleged tax fraud coverup — Hunter Biden's schwanzstucker. Nude photos of the president's son are key pieces of evidence entered by Georgia stateswoman Majorie Taylor Green. They show a naked Hunter Biden making porn videos with sex workers, Green alleges. “This is actually the evidence that I believe the American people deserve to see.” No Wilson, you just can't unsee that. Hunter should be tarred and feathered and his father impeached and exiled. It goes back to 2020 when Rudy Giuliani was sniffing out Hunter's business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company as the 2020 election loomed. That led then-President Trump to tell Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden and Hunter or he might withhold $400 million in military aid that was already allocated. Trump was impeached by House Democrats for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He was acquitted by Senate Republicans. No wonder House Republicans are so pissed off. The Bidens are so shameless while Trump is getting blamed for silly stuff like insurrection, stealing classified documents, election interference and fraudulent hush money payments to his very own porn star. It's just so unfair.
IS KEN REALLY BARBIE'S GBF?
Hold on to your Barbie. Ken is not her boyfriend. He’s Barbie’s GBF — gay best friend. No Wilson, we are not making this up. That's the word from Barry Levitt writing in The Daily Beast. And he's not the first to say it. When Mattel rolled out Ken in 1961 he was portrayed as Barbie's boyfriend. “Get both Barbie and Ken and see where the romance will lead!” a TV commercial promised. The couple later starred in the 2010 animated film “Toy Story 3,” where they appear as a young couple. Sure, they're good friends, Levitt says, “But through it all, there’s not a hint of sexual chemistry.” When Ken gets his big chance at the DreamHouse he takes Barbie into his closet. (No pun intended.) But instead of going for it, Ken puts on a fashion show for Barbie. OMG! “In Barbie, Ken has found someone who really understands him,” Levitt explains. In 1993 Mattel introduced Magic Earring Ken wearing a lavender mesh shirt, a matching purple leather vest and a necklace with an “O” ring reflecting his sexual preference. Mattel inadvertently made him the essence of '90s queer fashion. Oops! Gay commentator Dan Savage gave him a nice coming out, much to Mattel's chagrin and Earring Ken became a gay icon. Sales were brisk but not just to the parents of little girls. He's was sooo hot.
SLAVERY WAS COOL, PRIMED BLACKS FOR THE GOOD LIFE
Florida is way ahead of the rest of Red States when it comes to rolling back the clock to the good ol' days. Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Education set new standards for African American history that tells the real story of how slavery gave Black people the opportunity to develop skills they could later use when share cropping and running from the Ku Klux Klan. The new K-12 standards put to rest myths by liberal educators that slavery didn't have an upside. What about all that singing? Liberal teachers have been indoctrinating young people into thinking America isn't really great. But now high school students will be taught the truth, like the deadly white mob attack against Black residents of Ocoee, Florida, in 1920, where 35 or more Black people were killed was really violence against African Americans by African Americans. Let freedom ring. DeSantis has been working diligently to create an educational system that protects white students from feeling guilty for bad stuff that might not have happened. Last year he signed the “Stope WOKE Act” to restrict teaching of liberal hogwash. Today many Blacks get big money for things they're forebears learned on the plantations, like smithing horseshoes, digging ditches and picking cotton. Is this a great country or what.
Post script — That's gunna do it for another historic week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of Mormon history so you don't have to. A new book by Eileen Hallet Stone looks at the history of prostitution in the Territory of Deseret and the early years in the State of Utah. But oddly it was not celebrated in this year's Day's of '47 Parade — there was no “Prostitution Float,” Wilson, and we're not sure why. Salt Lake City, Ogden and Park City have rich histories of bordellos. Regent Street, downtown in the capital city, was a hotbed of such commerce. And a special train ran from downtown Saturday afternoon to the bottom of Heber Avenue in Park City, the mining town's red-light district. It would return to Salt Lake City in time for Sunday services. Men will be men. Speaking of harlots, Barbie is driving the right bonkers. Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro posted a video of himself burning Barbie dolls and then launching into a 43-minute tirade against the “Barbie” movie, saying it is the most woke thing he's ever seen. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said the movie features Chinese propaganda. And talk radio host Charlie Kirk said the film is “trans propaganda,” and “the most disgusting thing he's ever seen.” Those are the GOP's new ideas on how to tackle the important issues of our time.
Well Wilson, “Barbie” has set the country on its ear with way too much psycho and psychoanalysis. But we know you and the guys in the band won't overthink it. Barbie is a doll for little girls to fantasize about their futures whether they be housewives or astronauts. So let's just skip all the Freudian drama and go back to having fun. Hit it, Wilson:
Well, she got her daddy's car And she cruised through the hamburger stand, now Seems she forgot all about the library Like she told her old man, now And with the radio blasting Goes cruising just as fast as she can now And she'll have fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the T-bird away Well, the girls can't stand her 'Cause she walks, looks and drives like an ace, now She makes the Indy 500 look like a Roman chariot race, now You look like an ace now, you look like an ace A lot of guys try to catch her But she leads them on a wild goose chase, now And she'll have fun, fun, fun till her daddy takes the T-bird away Fun, fun, fun, 'till her daddy takes the T-bird away Well, you knew all along That your dad was getting wise to you, now And since he took your set of keys You've been thinking that your fun is all through, now But you can come along with me 'Cause we've got a lot of things to do, now And we'll have fun, fun, fun now that daddy took the T-bird away And we'll have fun, fun, fun now that daddy took the T-bird away Wooo-ooo-Aaaah!

Is Whiteboard Animation Dead?
Jan 19, 2023 · 7 min read
What is a Whiteboard Explainer Video?
What is whiteboard animation? Whiteboard or whiteboard animation is probably one of the most exciting types of advertising. After all, watching the process of drawing is really very interesting and engaging. This is a story that is created just in front of your eyes.
Video whiteboard animation is a video with deliberately simplified graphics, demonstrating the process of drawing images on a board / glass and gradually revealing an idea or plot of the video. Explain Ninja is a so a white board animation company that may help you create a doodle or whiteboard from scratch and optimize it.
The History of Whiteboards
The very first attempts to make whiteboard videos were put into practice after the camera and projector were invented of by Thomas Edison. As early as 1906, the short film Humorous Phases of Funny Faces was created by James Stuart Blackton, which was actually a product of stop-motion and cutout animation techniques. This sort of video had been displayed in some form since the 1890s. The authors were making drawings on the board, photographing, erasing, and then again repeating the process.
However, some historians agree that a whiteboard animation video was invented sometime in the late ’50s to early ’60s. According to one version of historical events, Martin Heit, a Korean War veteran, discovered something while working with photographic film. He could write on the negatives with Sharpie pens and this way went on to make whiteboard video first in the mid-1950s using the same laminate material that was used in film negatives.
How Are Whiteboard Explainer Videos Different From Other Types of Animation?
They say that whiteboard animation is dead. But this is so wrong. In fact, this is going to be one of the most classic types of animation that can still serve a brand well.
Whiteboard animations that are also called doodles which is the word that was so much popularised by releasing small animated logotypes by Google, are unique because they are different from other animation design types.
The main feature of doodle style animation is that the viewer sees not only the final result, but also the very process of the artist’s creativity on the screen. This helps to keep the attention of the viewer, and also has a positive effect on the process of assimilation of information. Therefore, such a video will be better memorised and more likely to encourage the viewer to buy a product or order a service that the brand offers via an animated whiteboard.
Just like in your student days you listened to a lecturer, writing something on the board and memorize. The board acts as an instrument that helps to emphasise the key points. So it is easier for you to perceive the data and assimilate it. Whiteboard animation works with the same principle.
When to Use Whiteboards?
The most popular area of use is an animated explainer video. It is for them that it is very convenient to use step-by-step drawings that tell a certain story. Interactive presentation of material and focus on key points help your audience quickly understand the key messages. Whiteboard animation tutorial video is ideal for the following areas:
Information technology
Education (online courses, study programs, etc)
Science and innovation
Non-commercial projects.
However, this does not mean that others cannot order whiteboard animation production. As soon as the viewers see some detail of a letter or picture, their brains immediately begin to think about what exactly will happen next. Therefore, if you develop a doodle professionally, you can achieve almost a hundred percent guarantee that the viewer will watch the video to the end and engage.
The Pros & Cons of Whiteboard Animation
There’s a range of both pluses in doodle graphics design and the minuses of whiteboard motion graphic. Let’s check it out.
Pros
Animated videos are an original and cost-effective solution to multiple marketing tasks, and the minimalistic style of whiteboards and step-by-step explanation of ideas perfectly holds the audience’s attention.
Most often, doodle videos are used to explain complex products and concepts (particularly in the IT field or in education), as well as to present new products.
In addition, it is a quick way to produce content for advertising campaigns or social media, and many people use this tool for everyday communication tasks.
Whiteboard explainers are so easy and effective that very commonly used by startups to explain what their service is all about and how their product works.
Drawing in doodles can be done on different surfaces (with chalk on a white/black/green board or with a marker on glass), in monochrome or color format. Sometimes the video is accompanied by animation effects which give a room for research to create awesome content.
To create simpler doodle videos, a wide range of educational programs are available for ordinary users who do not have the skills to create illustrations, motion design or editing. Many of them have free versions with limited functionality.
Cons
When developing a doodle video on your own, you should carefully think over the script, plot, storyboard, and choose the style of animation scenes and images in the software libraries in advance.
For the implementation of unique and complex projects, however, it is worth contacting a production studio, which will take over the development of the idea, script and production of the video.
There is a price for the development of each type of whiteboard animation, which depends on the level of complexity of the work. Doodle with characters and plot is a complete storytelling case. And the budget may turn out to be quite solid.
What Makes Whiteboard Videos Effective?
How to make whiteboard videos effective? In the doodle video format, all the drawings should be thoughtful and subject to the plot plan. However, their style, reminiscent of those very notes, allows you to quickly assimilate information and attract attention to the process of explanation. This is probably the reason for the high viewer engagement rates and the trend toward using this format for marketing purposes despite the idea that whiteboard animation is dead.
To create effective doodles, capture the mindset and spirit which people attach to working with whiteboards, and add an extra ingredient – great storytelling. Whiteboard videos are effective because of this winning combination.
If you need any whiteboard animation examples, feel free to find them on our resources.
Conclusion
Best whiteboard videos can help in the best way to present your project, service or business. They tell potential users about your product in a clear, simple way with an exciting story and unusual graphics. The more clearly you explain the essence of your business and the benefits for the user, the more likely you are to get a new client. And whiteboards may complete the task the best possible way. A little production costs, positive impressions, engagement and conversion, are guaranteed with using this animation style in your video production. 1️⃣🏃♂️💣 for the asks?
1️⃣ What’s the first fandom you ever participated in online?
Like a lot of folks my age, it was Harry Potter. I'm a perfect fit into that very specific subset of younger millennials that's been nicknamed "The New Bratpack," referencing Miley, Selena, Justin, Nick, Ariana, Timothy, and a number of young male actors and artists whose popularity has spiked enough to give him press coverage, until he does something dumb and and just fades away, as a revival of "Original Bratpack" wide group-recognition Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Maccio, Rob Lowe, and a many others who have made Hollywood shine for the past four or five decades.
All of that might be jumbled, but this, people who started attending school in the year 2000, after spending birth through 1999 raised without much encombus, at home, with a family. Schools had just introduced a new special activity, "Computer Lab," (during which a "technology educator" and a teacher would show the students the bells and whistles of Windows 1998, then keep everyone from putting misspelled profanity at the top of their word documents, because they hadn't learned to use the backspace key yet. Anxious children would cry out for help, and devious ones would pester their friends to ask if "the F-word" ended with a C or a K.)
My bio family got one of those white Gateway boxy things when I was 5-ish, and then when I was 12-ish they replaced it with a laptop and desktop, AND I was now allowed to have my own profile and (loosely monitored) internet access.
Very much true to that spot of a generation, the magic or still-releasing Harry Potter books and, and continuous release of "limited edition" paraphernalia was still a concrete part of, well, everyone I knew's lives. It made making school acquaintances easier. I can be very OCD about my most voracious task of interest of the moment, and memorizing trivia was a hobby of mine.
I'm not going to go back and count the years or do math, but I'm not THAT much younger than Emerson Spartz. By the time extended periods of free internet were allowed, I found MuggleNet, which had just barely spiffed up enough to be a Google recommendation, in addition to becoming navigable for a middle schooler who knew computer skills, up to and including, QWERTY and click-with-mouse.
Once I'd poked around enough to have read all the tabs and verbally debated the guesses for upcoming book subplots (I was way too afraid to leave a comment), I found their fanfiction collection, and I was immediately hooked. I thought it was fun, but there. was probably a glitch in the system. A search term would be run through all data of all text of all files, of all stories of the site. I have some buzzwords. They haven't changed much over the years.
At 12ish I was reading fanfic a few times a week. By age 16 I was hand-writing or making shitty (ha, windows 98, remember?) typed stories that I'd print out and just hide in my room. I just got onto AO3 a little bit before starting my blog, making me a full adult before I hit the "publish" key.
🏃♂️ What/s your longest running fandom you still have interest in?
I love Titain A.E., which is a very underrated 20th Century Fox animated film released in the summer of 2000. It's a StarWars-type adventure/mild thriller, definitely PG (kid friendly, but the plot's intricate and there's some canon-typical violence), it really hit the ball out of the park for me. Yes, I believe it is now a Disney pawn, since the mouse in whiteface is carrying on with throwing cash, and grinning at the knowledge of the outcome of the next slippery deal, but it's been long forgotten.
After a disappointing theater run, someone let dust gather on the cover of the original notebook. Characters voiced by Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore, pushed together by fate, must continue to survive in the midst of an inter-species war as they search for a hidden method to restore Earth, all whilst overcoming the obstacles of their post-apocalyptic cyberpunk environment and keeping an eye out for enemies, which may not be where they're expected...
Ok, that sells, right? And the soundtrack is amazing (even if it's a smidge dated, but that underscores the cyberpunk vibe nicely as well)--Lit's Over My Head is a big feature.
The three main characters in the film are all humans in an alien-dominated environment, and they come from drastically different backgrounds. There are three scenes dispersed along the plotline where each of the three characters are wounded/sedated/receiving medical treatment/engaging in field medicine... And with the three characters also having huge potential for the filling in of missing moments and little opportunities of added H/C, one can take things in a lot of different ways, and with a lot of freedom to create complementary backstory.
💣 Have you ever been a part of a fandom during what might be considered a major fandom event?
...No... Not, like, a con. Though I'd love to attend a comicon.
But I have done, oh, eight or so, midnight releases over the stretch of my teens. And a few book parties. Though those, at least in the geographical area in which I grew up, meant that maybe 20 or 30 people would walk aimlessly around Borders (remember when those stores existed???) whilst trying to wave at the news van with its high beams on before it backs out of the gridlock of the parking lot.

The Boyz college au
because i’m the worst and have spurts of radio silence when i want to be writing my aus but in my defense it is my last week of school for the semester and i’ve been working on getting my associate’s degree :))))))
but anyway uhhh yeah this isn’t ateez i know but i’m still thinking about the be your own king video the boyz released out of literal NOWHERE and i felt inspired today in the middle of doing homework and wanted to provide you with something i hope no one’s done this so i can be original but i wouldn’t hold me breath
Hyunjae
he’s on the swim team and really into animation, but his major is undeclared. he’s constantly being hounded about needing to decide on a major, but he really just doesn’t care enough. yes he cares about his education (as can be seen by his top notch grades), he just doesn’t know what he wants to do and doesn’t see a problem in that. but he’s into a lot of different clubs besides his swim team, like the art club he frequents with juyeon every week. hyunjae also played a cyborg in one of kevin’s short films, and because of that he’s known as ‘the arm guy’ to a lot of people around campus. everyone else knows him as the star swimmer who’s always at the pool
Juyeon
he’s an art major, his favorite medium being paint. he’s also really interested in modeling, so he will help out some photography and other art students if they need someone. most people go to him first though because he’s just so beautiful and fits so many different aesthetics and is overall just such a natural at this stuff like wow. he loves making messes for his art projects because it shows that messy can be good sometimes, and it shows he has fun! his social media is mostly pictures of his artwork, but the pictures of him are the most popular and always get the most comments
Q/Changmin
dance dance dance my guy, he’s a dance major on the dance team who competes in underground dance competitions. his major deals mostly with classical training like ballet and modern dance while the dance team does a lot of hiphop and theatrical dancing, and he mostly freestyles for his competitions. and in case you’re wondering, yes he always wins. honestly though he dances everywhere because it’s what he loves to do, and he loves theatrics and putting on a show. people will find him in really random places around campus practicing or recording covers or even just freestyling because he can
Haknyeon
he’s a theater major. he likes musical theater and all but his favorites are classic plays. he especially loves shakespeare and has starred in nearly every production of his that the university has put on. he’s just really good at portraying romance and tragedy and even the comedies and it shows. it’s partly because he just loves romance dude what a dweeb so he really puts his whole heart in those performances. he’s always trying to get kevin to make a short film about a reimagined shakespeare story but he has yet to listen to him
Kevin
he’s a film major with a minor in creative writing. really the guy just wants to write and direct his own movie because how much fun would that be! he stars in a lot of his student short films because a lot of his friends would rather die than do that, but it’s okay because kevin still has fun!! def the type to make iconic indie films by accident when he’s through with college. his favorite genre is fantasy because he loves being transported to far off places, and if he’s able to transport other’s to a place he created? that’s the dream
Sunwoo
majors in music despite a bunch of people telling him it’s not realistic and a bunch of “you won’t be able to get a solid job if you major in something like that” bullshit, and because of this he has to put himself through college because no one’s really helping him out. it’s hard but sunwoo works part time at a car wash place and a roller rink guess which he likes more. but he knows how to vibe and is able to make his work fun, and it’s very apparent to those around him. people are always asking for the cute one that dances while he works
Sangyeon
everyone expects him to be the most responsible with his schooling, getting a degree in something professional like business and joining a bunch of leadership and volunteer oriented clubs. while yes he’s done all of that, he’d much rather be at the arcade playing games :( in fact he’s joined a lot of gaming competitions through the arcade, and he’s won a lot of them too! as weird as it sounds, that’s his motivation - knowing that he can win these games and the glory that comes with it, though he’s not a sore loser about things because who does that help? not that he could ever let people on campus know about what he does after school, otherwise they’d just laugh at him. right?
New/Chanhee
mans is a fashion major and fucking rules at it. he was the kid in high school who was always dressed to the nines while everyone looked at him either like “bro chill out” or “lmao what are you wearing?” it was annoying sure, but he likes clothes and how they make him feel. a lot of people stereotype him because of this though and act like they know everything about him. it’s infuriating and hard to just brush off, but at the end of the day he knows he’s happy with himself and what he is doing. and he knows that’s all that matters
Younghoon
he’s a lit. major with a concentration in the classics. he and haknyeon honestly bond a lot in that aspect because they’re constantly reading and rereading classic novels and plays together. he thrives in history too, and he’s constantly seen in the library so that he can learn more things. he likes cultural programs and clubs too because it means he gets to learn more about his own and get to learn about others’ as well. his ultimate dream is to write a story that will become a classic one day, even if it takes hundreds of years for it to happen. he’s patient
Jacob
he’s another music major, but the main difference between him and sunwoo is that he’s not alone in putting himself through school. his family is supportive and helps him out with money, but they also give him a lot of freedom. he’s honestly pretty close with sunwoo despite all of this, and they’re constantly working on music together. jacob knows he can’t just rely on his family though so he works too. works part time at the local fair/amusement park which sunwoo just cannot fathom because “why would you do that to yourself? being around all those rotten kids sounds like a nightmare.” unlike sunwoo, jacob actually likes kids, and even more he likes to see people smile
Eric
he’s actually on a sports scholarship for baseball. he doesn’t technically need the money for school, but he works in a garage fixing up cars in basically all of his spare time. it’s kinda obvious that he’s on the young side because he’s very “cars are cool :)” and there’s nothing wrong with that, it just means there’s a lot of people younghoon telling him he should join more clubs and become more involved in things going on around campus. but he takes pride in his skill at baseball and in his work with cars and the fact that he just got his driver’s license! take that younghoon
#why do i do this to myself?#i already have wips AND THIS WASN'T ONE OF THEM#the boyz#the boyz imagines#the boyz au#the boyz scenarios#the boyz imagine#the boyz scenario#the boyz sangyeon#the boyz jacob#the boyz younghoon#the boyz juyeon#the boyz kevin#the boyz q#the boyz new#the boyz juhaknyeon#the boyz sunwoo#the boyz eric#i hope i tagged this correctly#i also forgot to mention sangyeon boxes

Work
2.
Ever since my first work-related burn out - I had an other one years later that led to a car accident -, I only managed to implement 2 tools to try and keep me from losing it again.
6 years.
And I only found two tiny tools not to get overpowered by my job.
I don’t work after 8:00pm anymore. I try to avoid it from 6:30 but it’s not always possible. The later I work, the harder it gets for me to sleep. First because I need all that time for my brain to cut off. So it can slow down and feel sleepy. But also because the longer I spend on an activity in a day, the bigger space it takes in my brain. It’s here. Whenever I close my eyes. When I sleep. Until it suffocates me. And that when work goes well and on a normal schedule. The extra hours, projects and meetings don’t only mess up with that, but they also bring anxiety of their own.
My other tool is writing down in my planner all the hours I work. I’m a teacher, I’m not on the clock. But I need clarity. I need to see I’ve worked more than my share and deserve the break that I need. Or don’t realise that I need.
The thing with teaching is that you usually get the same grades. You can reuse the stuff you have experimented and know work. 4 years I’ve been in the same middle school. 4 years with the same 4 grades (that’s actually a lot, most of my colleagues in other middle-schools only have 2 or 3). Many things I do reuse. But most need improvements. Or I get bored with them, so I switch to something completely different. 4 years I’ve waited for that moment I’ll rely on all of my previous hard work to get some free time. To engage in my hobbies. I’m still not there. I don’t think I will ever be.
Because you have all the other stuff. All the extra work you are more or less pressured to take upon. There has to be an IT go-to person. You’re the only one who know how to handle computers and tablets, can you do it? Otherwise there’s no-one else. We don’t have enough class teachers, you must step in. We need teachers among the administrators. You are single, don’t have any children and live right next to the school, it’s not a big deal for you to enrol. We need teachers to sit at the student meetings. You enjoy organising festive stuff, can you please come? I found half an hour lacking in your yearly timetable. You are going to give some kids you were not supposed to teach at all this year some methodology workshops according to their needs. Even though you suck at methodology and have to press your colleagues to consult them about what to do with who. You are going to step out of your class in the middle of a lesson tomorrow to attend a meeting with a mum and plenty other important people and then go straight back to teach an other class without any transition (I’m autistic, I simply cannot do that). You really love cinema, you should build up a project about animation film (I did, because it’s thrilling, but also it’s way too much right now, but I just can’t let the chance go).
One of the things in education is that it’s a public service. My employer is the state and work regulations don’t apply to the state as an employer. I never signed a contract. There is no job description. We are constantly ‘invited’ to meetings and training, whether they are mandatory or not. Of course no one lets us know which ones are mandatory. We have nothing to refer to clear that out. For a many months, my headmaster mastered the art of making us assume things are mandatory so we all attended everything and he could brag about how diligent his team was. Everyone around me is tired about it. Some are, like me, getting annoyed. But I seem to be the only one to get insomnia from not being able to figure out what is expected and to what extent.
Not to mention that most of us teachers (not all obviously, but at least 70% of the people I have worked with, to different extents, since some actually know how to set boundaries - or just don’t give a shit) are meticulous, assertive swots who only aim to be the best we can. That haze is the best way to keep pressing us like lemons. And we’re aware of it. But our sense of duty is so exaggerated, we keep playing the game. Until we break.

Q1 : If you could write your character your way in their own movie , what would it be called , what style would it be filmed in, and what would it be about ? A1 : The same answer as Aurora, The Tale of Solis et Lunae that stars him alongside Aurora, Lunae, Jack, and Tate, plus more. A cosmic adventure / fantasy / coming of age / superhero / the reluctant hero / the chosen one. His role is of Aurora’s best friend and her greatest support in emotional and supernatural dangers. He is the time traveler who ascends time and space, so he often also gives her insight and information like the sage. It’ll expand across dimensions, worlds, and different states of existence. The scenes would be cinematic with a strong soundtrack. I imagine him to have some scenes like Quick Silver in the X-Men movies. Q2 : What would their soundtrack / score sound like ? A2 : He would have a 90s grunge or spacey dream rock sound. It ties in with the end of the last answer because i see him in one of those scenes with 90s grunge or maybe classical music ? Q3 : Why did you start writing this character ? A3 : I made Augustus just a bit before Aurora. They were a two part deal. I don’t know when it began, I just had this image of a tall, long haired boy with piercing, intelligent eyes who’s a smart-ass and likes being a know-it-all nuisance. This character has been the same since he began in 2019 and refused to change. He was always a drummer, he always had the same fashion sense, the look, Gus was always half-Korean, he always had long fingers he wore rings on, and he was always Aurora’s best friend/partner in crime. He remains unchanged and that's why I wanted to write him. This very vivid image of this boy was something I had to pen down. And just my luck, I found a fc who looks exactly how Gus looked in my head. Q4 : What first attracted you to this character ? A4 : Augustus is just extraordinary. It’s something I always felt about him and Aurora and I don’t see any of my other characters coming anywhere close to them regardless of how much I spent time on them. But with Augustus, his entire image and looks and personality — down to his wardrobe and jewelry was always so vivid in my head. Like I knew this very chaotically handsome boy who was going to turn the world upside down. His story is interesting, but what interests me more is his perspective on his story. The way he looks at his life and how he is quiet and doesn’t show his pain. How confused he always is. How much he aches but never seems so. The way he loves but doesn’t say even a quarter of the intensity he feels. And how sometimes he believes he deserves suffering because it makes sense to him. I also love the connections he makes and the way he loves so deeply and profoundly but underneath the surface. His connection, love, fears, and hopes with Aurora and Jack for their respective reasons are extremely beautiful. Q5 : Describe the biggest thing you dislike about your muse. ? A5 : Augustus is unknowingly self-sabotaging. He let go the only relationship / love in his life that made him feel like real love just because he thought he didn’t deserve it. And because when he was provoked, it made “sense” to him. He bottles his emotions and pain so much despite their intensity. He never shows how much he really cares and really hurts. And how sure he is that he’ll end up alone without friends and that it makes sense to him. Q6 : What do you have in common with your muse ? A6 : Here’s a fun answer, because I bottle my emotions like him. I also interact with the carefree way he does even if I don’t feel peachy. He’s smart and witty and really hot and I don’t even have that going on for me. So, yikes. Only of Gus’ bad things I share. Q7 : How does your muse feel about you ? A7 : Gus loves interacting with people so he’ll definitely show up to annoy me. Maybe, he might think I’m fun to annoy? Or maybe, we’ll have a similar sense of humor. I think he won’t dislike me. Not sure if he’ll like me. I think he’d think I’m funny in a strange sort of way. Q8 : What characters does your muse have interesting interactions with ? A8 : Aurora, first of all. They have this same brain wave-length thing going on where they’re partners in crime and bffs forever more. He knows how she is feeling and what she’s thinking even before she utters it. If she is about to sneeze, he’d get a tissue ready. He can tell if she is hungry or sleepy with one glance. She can do the same, so they sorta have this weird understanding of each other. Jack is this older brother figure Augustus loves. He won’t admit it, but he kinda wants to make Jack proud of him. He also wants to provide love and care to Jack that he thinks he deserves but never got. They’re his family now and he’ll never be alone or sad again. He annoys Jack a lot but behind it all, he just wants Jack to think he is needed and he belongs. That if he thinks Augustus is reliant on him, then he has this family he has to protect and care for. He can’t stand the thought of Jack feeling unloved, forgotten, alone. Tida is another one. There’s this great respect and adoration Gus has for him. Almost like he looks up to him in some ways He also has a lot of hopes and expectations attached. He feels Tida is everything that Gus himself lacks. He is the ideal boyfriend, kindest person, shows his emotions vividly, and is like a warm and cozy blanket personified. He is probably Tida and Aurora’s biggest supporter and first one to know. He can’t be happier than he is that Aurora found someone as good and perfect as Tida. Taewon is one really fun character. Their two-way frenemy jealousy spans over years and started in Cambridge when they were both in love with the same girl they claimed to be best friends with. Though, trying to be calm, Augustus was constantly provoked and hurt, made to feel inferior and constantly in fear of his relationship being broken by Taewon’s schemes that he couldn’t say out loud. This dark period ended with a fist fight and baggage of guilt they both carry to this day for hurting each other and the one they claimed to love. Today, they’re way past that and frenemies who have funny quips and arguments for each other. They say they dislike each other. But if the lighting is good, one would be the photographer of the other. Q9 : What gives you inspiration to write your muse ? A9 : Music helps me imagine scenes with perfect visual details. Any scenes from shows that remind me of my storylines. Q10 : How long did this take you to complete ? A10 : I don’t remember. It was many days and I didn’t count because it was in bits and pieces.

Hey rich white Americans? Can you please refrain from writing about Egypt if you dont know anything about our culture or our history?
Yes, the pyramids are a part of out history but there's more than that. Learn about our weather patterns, our architecture, our food, our animals. Learn about the people. Learn about the Ar*b Spr*ng (censored cause it triggers me when I see it) and all of the countries that it happened in, not just one or two.
Learn about the traffic (because I've seen films where people get to the airport in 20 minutes. It would really take at least 2-3 hours, maybe more). Learn about government and it's corruption.
Study how we look, because our skin ranges from "yeah you're pretty white" to dark brown. Study how we were invaded and conquered so many times. Study the education system, the banking, the factories.
And notice I mentioned Ancient Egypt twice. Once with the pyramids, and once with the invasions.
We are not just some long dead people that put some stone in a pile and worshipped multiple gods and goddesses.
We are workers, fishers, teachers, students, bankers, government officials, street merchants, hotel managers. We are football (soccer) fans, we usually either like Al Ahly or Zamalek (fuck Zamalek but a lot of people like them). We swim, we play, we dance, we eat, we breathe. We are humans.
Don't stop talking about us once you're done with your shitty inaccurate film about Cleopatra.

An Open Letter
An Open Letter to Bonnie Wright
You and I share a situation. We met three years ago, thoughI don't claim to know you. Our one meeting comprised perhaps as many as six minutes of interaction, probably more like four. Nor do I expect that you remember me. Still, the circumstances of our meeting led to reflection upon why that is so. Which led to the conclusion I mention, that we share a situation.
This may well sound grandiose. You are rather well known for performance art, for entrepreneurship, and for activism related to the environment. The latter includes teaching and promoting ways and means to change our (human race) behaviors that will improve our place on this planet. All of that is why I decided to attend a large con where you also attended as a guest celebrity.
To say “I am a fan” is a very incomplete thing. It's true, I am a fan. And your performances in the Potter film series sparked this. However, one role, one episode, one book does not make me a fan. It is a combination of a lot of things. Other examples of the artist's work, seeing what the public persona is like, discovering what this individual does, besides their art. In short, a rather more holistic view.
So, yes, it leads, in this instance, to being able to say I enjoyed your work in the Potter series, even though my own classification of the films is glorious, lush, visual fan-fiction. Those performances led to looking for other performances. Enjoying the discovery of new things. Nelson Nutmeg proved fun, silly, and I'm glad I watched even if it's not well known. Then again, I've a penchant for the odd things. Before I Sleep felt quite poignant. I confess a strong fondness for your directorial debut, Separate We Come, Separate We Go. I attribute that to being a fan of two people involved in that short. And these trails also brought me to noticing your advocacy for the environment; the news clip that tipped the balance to decide to meet you (however short) covered you meeting with primary school children to discuss the environment and things we can do to make it healthier.
Because this all demonstrates someone who is more than their work. Someone with passions and hopes beyond what brings in their income. Someone who cares, a great deal. You see, I am also an artist, visual work as well as written. Not particularly well known as such, and I'm happy with that. I care about the environment, because I live with it, owning a small ranch or farm (whatever one calls it). And I earn my income doing something that I feel passionate about.
I am a Registered Nurse. In your country of birth, I would be known as a Theatre Nurse; in my country of birth as either an Operating Room, or Perioperative Nurse. I take care of people undergoing surgery. Within that specialty I also specialize in this manner: I care for children that need surgery. My time doing this is measured in decades. Herein is the reason I say, you and I share a situation.
I long since stopped counting the number of times I will be out and about, grocery store, hardware store, walking the dog in the park, and some seeming unknown individual stops and says to me, “Oh, you took care of my (daughter, son, sister, brother...) when … and thank you, thank you so much.”
My response is always something along the lines of How are they doing, I'm glad they're well, You're welcome. Some, quite few, I may recall. But if pressed, I make the admission: No, I'm sorry, I don't exactly remember you. Because (and here is the similarity, the situation) there is one of me. There are thousands of them. In your case, likely tens, hundreds of thousands of them.
No, you don't, won't remember me. That's as it should be. Why am I writing this then?
To say Thank You, again. For those minutes you spent with me, an autograph, a “selfie” self portrait. Particularly that last, and it's related to a common misconception about my Nursing specialty. Even other nurses will sometimes say, “Oh, those OR nurses, they don't like to talk to their patients.”
Um, no, that's not it. Here's the challenge I enjoy about it. I've got five, ten, maybe 15 minutes if it's really needed, to meet, establish a rapport, gather my needed data to plan the care for a patient. Particularly that rapport, because I must, when they are anesthetised and no longer able to speak for themselves, be one of the team that advocates for them.
To that end, I use all those other aspects of myself I mentioned above. Because as a student, I learned that Nurses consider and treat their patients holistically, looking to all aspects of their lives (education, support systems like family and more, understanding of what's going on in their world, so much more) to plan the needed care. And it's impossible to do this well without considering oneself holistically as well. And I'm an artist, animal husbandry (ranch, farm, whatever), geek, fan, spiritualist, philosopher. So I will ask “What are some things you like?”
Because keeping those things in mind helps reduce anxiety. Reduced anxiety promotes healing and recovery. Working from that, go with the answers. Perhaps the answers are reading, or watching films. What films, or books? Many of my patients (and they range in age to young adults, depending, but that's not for this story) are also fans, of a lot of different things, some shared. Often enough, fans of Harry Potter. Books or films? Again the answers range, exclusive to all. So perhaps, which character is your favorite?
When the answer is Ginny Weasley, I respond, “Yes. She's one of my favorites too. In fact, I need to show you a photograph.” When I do, this strengthens the rapport, the bond.
And the absolute best response came from one young teen, who turned every head in the Preoperative Holding area, when they screamed out: YOU MET GINNY WEASLEY!!!!!
Yes. Yes, I did. No, I don't know her, I only met her.
I met you at a public event that touted your presence with the words “Best known for her portrayal of Ginny Weasley.” Not your efforts to raise awareness about what we as a people are doing to the planet we live upon, rely upon. Not for other films in which you performed, or directed, or wrote. Not for the multitude of aspects that the public knows about you that make you someone I admire. And that's why I'm writing this. To say thank you for being you. To say Thank You, Bonnie Wright / Ginny Weasley, for helping me take care of my patients.

Renée Felice Smith was only six years old when she knew that she wanted to be an actress and storyteller, but people tried to dissuade her from her chosen career path, telling her it was an impossible goal. Luckily, Smith’s parents weren’t among the naysayers, and today she’s living her dream, starring as Intelligence Analyst Nell Jones on NCIS: Los Angeles (Sundays, 9 p.m., CBS) and co-authoring her first children’s book Hugo and the Impossible Thing with her creative partner Chris Gabriel.
So, when her French Bulldog Hugo was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Smith once again ignored the doubters and found the best vet possible to give Hugo a shot at life rather than listen to those who told her it was “just truly impossible.”
“We just knew we had to try for our little guy, and we’re so glad we did because he was with us for another two beautiful years, just grinning, growling and running around the yard like the wild man that he always was,” Smith tells Parade.com in this exclusive interview. “So, we’re so glad we fought for him and advocated for him.”
When Hugo finally passed, Smith and Gabriel knew they had to tell his story to inspire others to conquer the seemingly impossible things in their life. So they wrote a story about a little dog named Hugo, who succeeded where others didn’t even try as a result of his bravery, curiosity, teamwork and persistence.
“The love is still here, and it needed someplace to go, so now we have the book and Hugo’s message that now we get to share with the world, which I’m just so grateful that it’s become real,” Smith adds.

This Sunday night, Smith will be back with some teamwork of her own when NCIS: Los Angeles returns with a new episode dealing with technology, which is something that Nell excels at. In the “Imposter Syndrome” episode, NCIS obtains a hard drive containing a realistic deep fake video of a deceased terrorist and must retrieve the dangerous technology behind it. However, when the team’s comms are hijacked during their mission, they find that one of their own has been a victim of its potential.
And, spoiler alert, Smith says that in the May 23 Season 12 finale, Nell will finally be reunited with Hetty (Linda Hunt)! But how that will play out remains to be seen.
“Linda was essentially sidelined by the pandemic, but, very exciting, I do share a scene with her in our season finale and it’s one of the most memorable scenes of my time on NCIS: LA, so I’m very grateful to have her back as my scene partner,” Smith says.
For more of what Smith had to say about her real-life Hugo and Hugo and the Impossible Thing, as well as more NCIS: Los Angeles scoop, read on.
With your background, a movie seems a more natural project than a book about Hugo. How did it turn into a book?
Chris, my other half, and I are lovers of all types of books. We grew up with children’s books and some of the most impactful stories and lessons we feel that we’ve learned in our lives we learned in the pages of those books, so we really wanted to create this modern classic, a book that kids, or quite frankly, anyone nowadays could really benefit from.
Especially right now, we’re all dealing with our own version of the impossible thing, and we’re trying to find our way to the other side. What better way to inspire you and yours to go out and conquer whatever your impossible thing is than through a storybook following this spirited French Bulldog through the forest, kind of this yellow brick road, Wizard of Oz structure? He meets up with his forest friends and they end up helping him through the impossible thing. It’s really a story about bravery, curiosity, teamwork and persistence. We wanted to encourage that in our readers, both young and young at heart.
Tell us about Hugo and his battle with his brain tumor.
Hugo was diagnosed with a brain tumor and we were truly beside ourselves. It was an out-of-body experience. He was a feisty, curious, wild man who was quite literally sidelined by this potentially terminal disease, and we just knew that we didn’t want to give up on him, and he wasn’t giving up on himself. Every step of the way, we would say out loud, “Hugo, just let us know, buddy, do you want to keep going?” And he met us with this enthusiasm for the process every step of the way. And that is truly why we kept going.
Did Hugo instill in you the belief that the impossible might be possible? Or did you already have that?
That’s interesting. I think the process really showed us that if you ask the questions, oftentimes the people who ask the questions are the people who find the answers, and this process really reiterated that. He inspired us to advocate for him, because animals are helpless on their own, but we could do something about it. We could ask the questions; we could be his voice. I’m just so thankful that he was always this bright light that had this insatiable curiosity for life. He definitely imbued that in me, and I know he imbued that in Chris. He did inspire us to help him conquer his impossible thing. If he didn’t have the fight in him, if he wasn’t such a spirited dog, I don’t know if that would’ve happened, but he was singular in a way. I reference him as my canine son, because he was. He was my baby.
On NCIS: Los Angeles, Nell is torn these days. She feels Hetty tricked her into taking the job when she said she didn’t want it, but she has the support of her team and also Kilbride. So how do you think she’s feeling these days?
She really is at a crossroads in her life. I think a lot of young women find themselves at this point, where they are very good at their job, but is it the job that they always saw themselves in? Is it the job they saw their future selves thriving in? I think for Nell, she’s really questioning whether she wants this to be her story, and in the process, she’s really finding her voice this season. There’s a scene with Sam Hanna, LL Cool J‘s character, that recently aired, where she spells out her frustrations in her position as de facto operations manager and how she’s struggling to keep the plates spinning. And she tells him that he needs to get on her team. It was a really stern moment for Nell.
I don’t think we’ve really ever seen that. Actually, LL Cool J and I were talking about what a different flavor this scene is bringing to the show because Nell usually is quick with a quip, but she doesn’t often drop the hammer in this way. And this season, we really do get to see Nell drop this hammer, stand in her power, and let people know that she needs help and she’s questioning this process.
I think that’s the side of being the operations manager that we didn’t really get to see very much with Hetty because she had everything under control. So, it’s kind of fun and new to see the person, who may be greener in the position, find her way in this new position of leadership.
How much has COVID affected what we’re seeing this season? Is that why we don’t see more of Linda Hunt, to keep her safe? And I noticed there are fewer people in scenes, especially in ops.
You’re absolutely right. Our show did an incredible job managing the crisis that was the pandemic and continues to be the pandemic. We are tested five days a week. Our crew was incredible in keeping everyone safe. The was goal to keep everyone safe, and we were, in turn, able to create 18 episodes of television, which is incredible.
You were just picked up for your 13th season, so it isn’t over yet, but when you look back, what will you take away from it?
Oh, my goodness. We’re a family, you know, but it’s been a mini-film school for me as well. My time at NCIS: LA has been educational. I just pinch myself how lucky I am that I was able to quite frankly lock onto a job like this for so long. In our industry, stability as an actor is not something you often experience. So, to have this group of people who I’ve grown to love and really consider extensions of my family, I’m just so grateful for the time. I feel like I’ve been a student. I feel like I went to school all over again for 10 years.
With Linda being this master in her craft, I can’t even quantify what I learned from her and most of it happens when we’re waiting to do our scene. It’s in those moments that I hear the stories from her childhood and the stories from early in her career, just these nuggets of wisdom that I have now in my little carpet bag.
From your work outside NCIS: LA, it seems as if maybe long-term, you’re more interested in being behind the camera and writing, producing, directing.
It’s interesting, often as actors, we’re part of someone else’s story, we’re carrying out someone else’s vision, but I’ve always been a storyteller. As a kid, I would essentially write my own little plays and perform them in the yard and direct my friends and family, my sister, namely, in those plays. And for as long as I remember, I’ve always wanted to tell stories. So, yeah, that is where I see myself heading in the future.
You’ve said that you knew at age six that this is what you want to do. And you were lucky that your parents supported you.
Oh, 100 percent. I wouldn’t be standing here today if they hadn’t instilled confidence in me and in my creativity. They really created an environment that fostered out-of-the-box thinking, and I’m so grateful for that.
Which takes us full circle back to the impossible just might be possible.
It’s so true. If you’re curious enough and brave enough and you have the support, obviously, of your community, I think that’s the missing piece in a lot of these puzzles. It’s really the support because you can’t get there alone. No one can. The one-woman show does not exist. It’s an ensemble; it’s a production.
