Fiction books read in the first half of 2024, part 1 of 3
It's time once again for my posts about the books, comics, audio books, and audio dramas that I've read or listened to over the last six months. I hope you like these covers, and you see something that you want to read. They'll be grouped loosely: fiction, non-fiction, comics, and audio dramas. No distinction is made between audio books and paper or digital books, and in some cases I just used the cover that I liked best (and could find a decent image of) rather than the one attached to the copy I actually read.
A Fighting Man of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Castle of Blood, by C.L. Werner
Dracula, by Bram Stoker
Gallows Hill, by Darcy Coates

I know I really haven't told Melo's story (or any story) in its full true capacity to my liking, yet...(its been gameplay shenanigans up until this point)...
But the "OC Ask Game" thingy got me thinking...and I've been sorta, kinda melting (for no reason at all) at the fact that Marguerite still calls Melo "Suge" (which is his childhood (preteen-hood...?) nickname (She does it at random, like it'll come up in basic conversation because it's muscle memory at this point...but also what ties her to him (and makes her feel...a sense of comfort).
I honestly despise her for what she did to break up their marriage (And I LOVE Monet down) but knowing that she still calls him that (at random) and seeing the way he responds (in my mind) is the cutest thing. Its' harmless (in my mind...it may be calculated in hers *shrugs*)... Like, yes, he loves Monet down! And things are done with Marguerite...but the little things (like being called "Suge" gives him a sense of security/feels like home) and my heart melts a bit because of it...It catches him off guard EVERY time...but he doesn't show it. It's like this harmless thing that means nothing but everything at the same time...It just flows during conversation and he bypasses it (but also notices it...yet thinks nothing of it...if that makes sense)
Despite EVERYTHING that went down between the two, he still wants what's best for her, even though she is THEE biggest pain in the ass. He wants to see her happy. When I tell ya'll he loved the hell out of that girl...and was heartbroken by what she did to him and their marriage...but his heart still wants her to be happy because she is the mother of their children (and because he LOVED her). But He wants his kids to reap the benefits of being in a healthy, happy environment more than anything (and he knows that begins with him and her)
He TRULY wants them to have the happiest, safest upbringing possible and I really love that about him. 🥺 When Marguerite tries to make things about him and her, he redirects that focus on the children. Monet got her a good one, chile!

I love when I can see a spat brewing between my cats because when I start to diffuse the situation by talking to them to distract from whatever is making them want to bicker, Mars gets this look on his face that's like, yep. This is because of me. I was going to smack someone.

could you imaaaaagine if they stuck with this idea & actually went the distance with the pathos they bothered to reinforce his character with in the first place instead of dialing back to Rich Guy Who Cheats woohoohoohehehehe 😃🔫
#cobra kai#terry silver#because there IS truth in their whole conversation! starting from the dinner table!#chozen was real about his upbringing which helped terry let his guard down and admit this to him#and theres the whole thing with the katana#how terry doesnt know whether its an authentic artifact or not or if he even gives a shit at the end of the day#but the point is he's using lavish collectibles to mask his emptiness Which is echoed when chozen points out how CK serves the same purpose#and that emptiness is his lack of love!!#its his fault that he's alone But if they wrote him as a gay man it would add a new level of bitterness to his loneliness#there is the idea of terry as a gluttonous racist who in all likelihood does not respect the artifacts in that room#which would be true either way tbh#but theres also the idea of a ''Rehabilitated'' terry who did take up a genuine interest in art and history#which is albeit slightly marred by his flippant disregard for the katana's authenticity#though it could still be written off as his cynical mocking of the auctioneer & thus his own need for the artifacts as a collective mask#but the latter version of terry (while not erasing his evil) redefines the symbolism of th katana in their fight#it would be a shard of that mask repurposed as a defense mechanism#the artifacts are as much his children as the CK kids#and conversely the kids are finely sharpened weapons themselves#and his version of love his building you up to perfection only to keep you on a trophy shelf#if he points out things he wants to fix about himself in you he'll be able to remold you into the perfection he thinks he never achieved#and theres only so many ways you can tinker with a toy before it becomes perfect & then you move onto the next#you collect & collect & polish & polish without confronting Why you have this compulsion in the first place#& when he starts losing the kids later in the season he reaches for their symbol during the fight as an extension of himself#as both a means of defense & a recursive admittance of defeat (without him realizing)#ouroboros moment!!#to finish: this is why im obsessed w the passion behind his anger at chozen later#he rolled over & showed his belly & realized his big moment of truth was buoyed entirely by falsehood#the ''i will pay TRIPLE'' is so powered by the shame of admitting something as vulnerable as ''i wanted children''

There was a man fighting Superman.
A man with flaming hair and red eyes, who would honestly look like your average biker if not for said flaming hair, red eyes, and the fact he's fighting Superman.
The man was going blow for blow, punching Superman through buildings, being punched through buildings himself and laughing as he fought like he's feral or something. Which, unfortunately, results in a large amount of property damage.
Until it was stopped by a kid wearing nothing but an oversized pair of sweatpants, slippers, and a Nasa shirt.
"I'm going to disassemble and hide the parts of your beloved bike if you don't stop." Danny said, arms crossed. "You wouldn't dare." Said Dan, copying his pose exactly.
To Superman, it looked like a perfect mirror between brothers.
The silence lasted for a few full minutes, toxic green staring into glowing red as they both refused to budge. Before the older shrugged and looked away.
"You know? Fine, have it your way squirt." Danny scoffed. "Well excuse me when you're trying to fight Superman of people!" It was Dan's turn to scoff. "You're overreacting."
"I'm going to punch you into Mars I swear."
Dan smirked as he cracked his knuckles. "Aw, does the lil dude wanna fight me again? You already know how that panned out last time and you don't got the element of suprise anymore."
Danny scowled, before cursing at him in Ghost Speak. Dan's face twisted, before he started growling back his own cruses.
Superman stared.
He clearly his throat.
"Excuse me, but are you two perhaps, Kryptonian?" Superman asked in near perfect ghost speak. Which didn't exactly say much since it was more about intent and, well, if your language was dead or not.
Both Danny and Dan paused, slowly turning to stare at Superman in undisguised shock. Dan quickly pulled his younger self closer and turned away from Superman to whisper into his ear. "When the fuck was Superman a ghost??"
"How am I supposed to know!?" Danny whisper screamed.
Both forgot that Superman had super hearing, and could listen to their conversation. Out of respect, however, he chose not too.
