A Cornish Waterfall, from "Views in Cornwall", Thomas Rowlandson, 1812
6 notes · View notes
Admittedly, as a massive Peter Pan fan who considers the 2003 movie to be nothing short of perfection, Peter Pan and Wendy was WAYYYYY better then what I was anticipating. There were good changes, questionable changes, good additions and questionable additions. Small details were removed or added that only fans as picky as me care about, but overall it was a pretty damn good adaptation of a story that's over a hundred years old.
I’m still unsure how I feel about certain parts of the film, but there’s one thing I'm sure of:
Neverland was so boring. I think that they tried to keep it realistic, but it’s about fairies, pirates and flying children!! Make Skull Rock look like a huge skull! Have a sapphire blue sky with bright pink clouds and disproportionate mountains and waterfalls!! give us the giant compass in the sea! Show us dazzling fairly glades! a turquoise mermaid lagoon! Give us more colour and stop making neverland look like the Cornish seaside!!

Directions: Take the Metro North train from Grand Central terminal to Cold Spring. Walk from Cold Spring train station to the trail head that’s one mile away. Takes around 8-10 mins. *Get some blueberry pancakes in Grand Central Market. They make the best blueberry pancakes. Remember on the train to sit on the LEFT side. Then you get the waterfront view.
Notes: This is one of my favorite hikes to do and one of the hikes I do a lot. It's like a ritual at this point. There’s so many good trails for all different level hikers. Bring a flashlight to see inside ruins.
My usual hike is first starting at the West Point Foundry where the train drops you off at Cold Spring. I do the hike there and look at the waterfall first because the Bull Head trail can get crowded.
Cold Spring is super popular and crowded in the fall, spring, and summer. I enjoy doing this hike in the winter and you can do this hike even if it snows because there’s less people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my usual route >
[Steps 1-2] After the West Point Foundry, I walk to the Bull Hill Trail Head. It takes about 10 mins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Steps 2-3] Do the Cornish Loop if you want to do an easy hike hitting a lot of ruins. Do the full loop if you want something challenging. Do the short loop if you don't want to finish the full loop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Steps 3-4 [blue trail] I leave out in the winter, because walking up that part of the trail can be steep and slippery if there’s snow. And also, 3-4 takes me 30 mins to go up and 15 mins to go down and I usually don’t have enough daylight in the winter to do the rest of the hike so I do it in the spring and summer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Steps 5-7] At the end of the blue trail there will be a path that splits in two. One says “Tunnel”, the other says “to Cold Spring”. Choose “Tunnel” and follow the red trail because it will lead you to two waterfalls and will lead back to the trail that goes to Cold Spring/ Cornish Ruins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Step 8] After the Bull Hill hike go to Little Stony Point and first do the Overlook trail to see on top of a cliff. Walk back down and do a full circle around Little Stony Point. Go to the beach and then explore the small cave. The small cave splits in two and is shaped like a T. There’s nothing in there to be honest but still fun going inside with a flashlight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Food >
After my hike I go back downtown and eat at Angies or the Chinese food place. There's a pizza place too but that place can get crowded [only place with a bathroom in the winter].
Angies has a good Caprese sandwich. I don't know what they put in their sandwich but it's addicting. They use a sweet pesto and it's so good. The Chinese food I eat for a quick hot meal in the winter.
I bring my food to the waterfront going through the tunnel under the train station or I go to the West Point foundry to eat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Always have books in the back of my trunk so I can put books in these little libraries. Tax for giving me a good time. First pic the little library was completely empty minus a Shah Rukh Khan DVD. Went the next week all my books were gone and some people put their own books as well. Donated all the books minus the food book > purple cane road book.

One Wedding, Two Waterfalls and Way Too Much Wine: Devon Delights and Cornish Charms
We had a long drive to Devon on Friday for my cousin’s wedding, so I decided to go to bed early the night before, I thought an hour or so extra sleep would do me good. Of course, my body had other ideas. I hadn’t accounted for my usual 3-4 a.m. wake-up so after some unsuccessful attempts at getting back to sleep I got up. I had a few bits I needed to do before we left so I thought I would use…

I’ve just come back from the loveliest weekend away on the Cornish coast, and while I was exploring hidden beaches and cute villages, I found myself getting so inspired for my long Drarry WIP.
It features Harry buying a house in a seaside village, and as I was wandering around this weekend I kept seeing my fic everywhere:
In little shops owned by quirky, more-magical-than-they-appear locals
Tumblr media
In pubs where Harry goes for a beer and a gossip about local legends
Tumblr media
In houses where Draco finds himself staying, with owners who see more than the boys are willing to admit to
Tumblr media
In waterfalls and hidden coves that teem with ancient magic
Tumblr media
And in the rugged coastline that I love so much and can’t wait to share with my two favourite characters and all of you
Tumblr media
I’m so excited to keep writing this fic now! I’m even more excited to start posting it so I can share my little corner of the world with you and Draco and Harry.

Discovering a Rich Heritage at Mount Rushmore
Charismatic. Colossal. Cultural.
Following footprints in the sands of time with legends echoing around the Wild West, I traversed the path of an intrepid traveler through the much-trodden trail to Mount Rushmore. I love adventure and as an ardent adventurer, I indulged in a sojourn in South Dakota, the land where famous pioneers, the aura of pre-historic beasts and the heart of the heritage of American Indian tribes surrounds visitors.
Tumblr media
With the sun, filtering through the ponderosa pine, cottonwood, oak and other coniferous trees, I discovered a breath-taking view of the magnificent sculptures of Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt carved into the granite surface of Mount Rushmore. While the ranges of the Black Hills of South Dakota provide a startling yet appealing sight, the 1700s sculptures reveal the work of Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum. The memorial park evolves over 1,278.45 acres and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level.
Tumblr media
These four prominent Presidents of the United States of America were chosen as they had created the most important events in the history of the United States. The concept of the sculptures can be attributed to the South Dakota historian Doane Robinson so that tourism would be promoted with the mountain being renamed after Charles E. Rushmore, a famous New York lawyer.
Experiencing the Wonder of South Dakota
Walking through trails to experience the massive park in South Dakota, I absorbed the scenic surroundings with wildflowers and Ponderosa pines. Sightings of wildlife are thrilling and as one ventures on a trek, squirrels, marmots, rabbits, mountain goats, chipmunks, deer, mammals, amphibians and birds can be seen at various locations.
Tumblr media
With something for everyone at Mount Rushmore, I took in the sights and sounds at the Presidential Trail and the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center & Museum. The amenities include Mount Rushmore Audio Tour, the Amphitheater, the Sculptor’s Studio and the Youth Exploration Area. Some of the tourist attractions include the Memorial Ice Cream Shop, the Mount Rushmore Bookstores, the Carvers Café, the Gift Shop and the Memorial Ice Cream Shop. My love for adventure and the penchant to try out new things took me through exciting chairlifts, wheeled sleds and the Aerial Adventure Park as the latest addition to Rushmore Tramway Adventures with its pulsating courses.
Traveling on a Delicious South Dakota Sojourn
My true-blue adventurer spirit, the secret to a traveler’s charisma set off to explore the delectable side of life as I traveled on a chairlift ride to indulge the senses at an ultimate al fresco experience. The Mountaintop Grille offers scenic views of Mount Rushmore and displays gorgeous views with flowers and waterfalls. Relaxing in a congenial ambience, I savored mouth-watering nachos, burgers & brats accompanied by an ice-cold beer. South Dakota specialties include gumbo, steaks, Italian cuisine, seafood, pizzas, muffins, Cornish pasties, jerky, roasts, tacos and many more delicious dishes. I added to my repertoire of experiences by visiting casual and fine dining eateries, chuckwagon supper and dinner shows, cafes, supper clubs and restaurants that inundate the South Dakota region.
Tumblr media
Delving into the American Indian heritage to treasure a memorable culture, I took a piece of the Black Hills and Badlands experience back as a keepsake as I browsed through the souvenir and gift shops that showcase original Western art, Sioux beadwork, pottery, leather, star quilts, gold jewelry and innumerable memorabilia.
Exploring the South Dakota Heritage and Culture
Traveling through the prairies, I visited the American Indian communities whose heritage, art and craft still vibrate through South Dakota. Known as the land of the Nakota, Dakota and Lakota, there are nine Native American tribes who live in South Dakota. I enjoyed and experienced their awesome hospitality and admired their incredible art.
Tumblr media
With adventure all the way, I filled my South Dakota experience with non-stop entertainment that evolves over hiking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, camping and visiting museums. As a perfect way to an adventurer’s heart, the state offers visits to dig sites to discover evidence of prehistoric humans and animals. In addition to outdoor recreation, amusement & theme parks, information and learning centers, I celebrated my action-packed trip to Mount Rushmore with sightings of burros, wild mustangs, herds of buffalo and the largest collection of reptiles in the world. With the spirit of freedom and the love of the great outdoors, I treasured my experience at Mount Rushmore as an inspiring and memorable adventure.

Eating smokey food around the campfire, getting lost in the countryside, exploring new places that are closer than you think. These are all important parts of a digital detox, a break from the world of social media and instant messaging.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We took a few days off for Lucy’s birthday, and spent them exploring the lakes and moors, the secret coves and abandoned wonders of Devon and North Cornwall. Not much more than an hour from our home, and yet an area we’ve so seldom explored. Our mini roadtrip turned into a series of detours, sightseeing and attempts to navigate narrow Cornish lanes without a Satnav or a map.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It was a beautiful break, and a wonderful taste of freedom to remind us what we’re working towards, and we even managed to squeeze a little Vlog out of it for you all (well, quite a big one actually).⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We don’t want to give too much away, but in three days we managed to cram in a lot of exploring, including wild camping at Roadford Lake, driving down the narrowest track we’ve ever driven to reach a beautiful secret beach with its own waterfall, and a drive around an abandoned airfield runway (bucket list: check).⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Our van may be a little scratched and bruised, but it was worth the drive, and we hope you’ll join us on Youtube tomorrow at 8pm GMT for the release of the second Vlog in our South England series.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Hit up the link in our bio to check out our channel, and don’t forget to Subscribe to be the first to watch our latest videos, out every Monday!⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣ ⁣ (at North Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs3j_rAHQsa/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5aaf28shc2m7

Puerto Rico Day 6
Woke up at 8am feeling a bit under the weather. My throats been bothering me for a few days now but woke up feeling like I spent the night yelling at the top of my lungs. Walked outside of our room at Casa Flamboyant to the most gorgeous morning view of the rainforest and... Angel chilling on our hammock with al her bed pillows. She let me give it a shot and I now have half a mind to swap my mattress out for this hammock (and move to Puerto Rico over the rainforest of course).
Tumblr media
After a few minutes of hammock shut eye we went upstairs to see that Ricky and Florin prepared us some coffee and tea. We grabbed a cup and headed into the Infinity Pool to welcome in the morning with a nice cool dip. Also all the water in the pool, tap, showers, etc, are all from the rainforest so all fresh, natural sources!
Tumblr media
I don’t think anything could beat this kind of view or these kind of mornings.
After lounging in the pool for a while, Ricky informed us that breakfast was ready. He started us off with a plate of fresh fruit grown by themselves or their neighbors. He then followed it up with a cup of fresh Acerola (Puerto Rican Cherry) juice. As if that wasn’t enough, he then brought out our main course: poached scrambled eggs with a goat cheese sauce and tarragon, a homemade coconut arepa (unleavened Puerto Rican bread), a slice of Carribbean avocado (extra creamy due to the water content), and a link of Spanish chorizo. Oh my gosh this was all so good. Poaching the scrambled eggs made them even fluffier and the balance of the neutral but creamy avocado with the salty, fatty, spicy chorizo, and the crunchy, sweet arepa was everything my mouth could want.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After breakfast I ordered a brown bag lunch for Ricky and we gathered our things for our second stop of the day.
---------------------------------------------------------------
We only had about a mile to drive to our next stop, the south entrance of the El Yunque National Rainforest. There were 3-4 other cars parked out front but essentially no one around. According to Ricky there’s two main hikes. The first is a more difficult hike up the mountain past the main recreation area beyond the gate. We decided to give it a try. It’s as unkempt as he said and then some. We may or may not have hummed the Jurassic Park theme the whole time.
Tumblr media
Jurassic Park-esque to the max.
We went about .3 miles before we hit a muddy river/rock/upward river? of sorts where my more experienced friend said we should avoid. We turned back, had some lunch at the recreation area, and decided to give the easier of the two hikes a try. This hike is closer to the front of the park entrance. I wouldn’t really even call it a hike. It’s a decently maintained path that leads to a spot right by one of the waterfalls. I was honestly relieved it wasn’t too strenuous cause I was definitely starting to feel my cold. Plus the view was decently worth the minimal effort.
---------------------------------------------------------------
With El Yunque off the checklist, we headed off to our Airbnb in Los Croabas. Compared to our luxurious loungings yesteray this place was....well not that... Leaking ceiling, no hot water, and so many mosquitos. The hostess did try her best with the other small amenities though but I’m relieved we’re only here for a night. We relaxed for a bit and headed to our dinner joint at La Estacion (well technically we went to CVS first for cold medicine). Besides breakfast, this meal was the only other highlight of the day. Great bilingual service and some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had (and I paid my dues in the South). We ordered the BBQ swordfish served w/ Arroz con Habichuelas and a sampler platter which included: a BBQ Cornish Hen w/ Alabama White BBQ Sauce, Brisket w/ pickled red onions and chimichurri plus an arepa, and 2 St. Louis style smoked ribs w/ a guava bbq sauce. This was paired with an American style potato salad and a summer salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions. Seriously it was so much food and every item was so tender and flavorful and our servers were all so helpful and friendly.
Tumblr media
---------------------------------------------------------------
After dinner we rushed off to our Bio-luminescent kayaking tour through Pure Adventures and well...that was quite something. To be honest it was mostly fun. Kayaking was a fun workout and it was amazing going through the mangroves at night until we hit a huge bay where we could see a ton of stars. We tied our boats together and got a brief lesson on dinoflagellates and their glowing effect. We ran our hands through the warm water and watched it glimmer with every twitch. It was mesmerizing. I also loved the view of this open water slightly sparkling with the tiny safety lights of so the kayaks. Crowded yet peaceful at the same time. But of course before we got there we had a mishap. Namely running into several mangroves and capsizing our boat and losing my flip flops in the process. I’m thankful I didn’t bring my camera but I did bring my wallet and phone. The latter was in a Ziploc bag and as of writing this we may have recovered it enough for me to not need to bring it in for repair. But let’s just say the rest of our night involved CVS/Walmart runs, bags of rice, and lots of hairdryers and paper towels. Also none of my Gopro footage of the night turned out cause of how dark it was but hopefully the flash photo the staff member took turned out nice.
Overall, it’s been kind of a rough day. My cold is peaking, damaged wallet and possibly phone, leaking ceilings/mosquitoes/no hot water. But it was all a fun experience (so long as my phone/wallet make it out alive, I’ll handle anything else.

Vocal recording session
This is the sheet music used for recording the final vocal track to allow for multi-tracking when using only one voice. I am glad we wrote out the music as it allowed for a smooth workflow and effective recording process, considering the time pressure when recording, we would have been unable to complete it quickly enough without this preparation. Admittedly we didn't stick fully to this music and I have adapted the beginning to more effectively account for the narrative flow as well as recording some improvisations that can be used throughout the piece as a leit-motif. This voice is intended to represent a weeping ocean, to give the sea a sorrowful human voice that will remind the viewer of the montage that features early on in the piece. This will eventually feature in conjunction with an industrial soundscape to juxtapose the primordial and unchanging natural beauty of the oceans with the crude interruption of technology and mankind's destructive nature.
Kernoweck approximate translations:
Gewl an keynor olva - see the tides weeping
Gwir lowen an golon - faithful/true/pure in their heart of calmness
Yn tewlder an bal ha war donnow an mar, agan kerensa yw dhis - in the blackness of the caves and on the lightness/brightness of the waves crest, a hollow/un-fillable/evergrowing love is our kindness of heart
These phrases are taken and adapted from pre 18th century traditional Cornish poems originally written in Kernoweck and compiled later in 1816 by Reverand William Bottrell. These sections where sung in the opening section in an attempt to reflect the purity of life that comes with the culture of traditional independent fishing. In other sections I will use some other sections of old poetry which again I will adapt into the piece some by Donald R. Rawe and others such as the exiles text by Robert Hawker. I will go into more detail in a later post. I feel that as a dialectical tool, using a dying language to speak of a dying culture works well and also encapsulates in the fading shadow language of the Cornish.
youtube
Location for recording the audio demo
I chose this location to record the audio as I felt a powerful natural reverb would greatly enhance the vocal performance and allow for slight harmonic variations and vibrato through resonance as the sound reflects back against a slightly shifting pitch (this demo video has no post processing). Due to Lowenna’s vocal control this worked perfectly and allows for these slight shifts in pitch to accentuate the natural reverb, this effect cannot be achieved in the same way through post-processed reverb as the performer cannot hear and enhance these fluctuations. Recording in this bunker as opposed to the cave was ideal as there is no audio flaws such as the sound of the waterfall and it allowed a more effective use of time as we would not get cut off by the tide. Initially i was worried that the performative element of using the cave would be lost when not recording there however the locations industrial nature still aligns with the intended performative element and the natural reverb enhanced it, I believe that this location chose made the performance drastically better.

This experimental choral arrangement was a great influence in the writing of this piece. It is a semi-improvisational reflection of the sinking of the titanic. I would have enjoyed working with a whole choir for this section to allow for the collective harmonisation that improvisations such as this require, It is effectively impossible to record a multi-tracked live improvisational harmonisation with one person, however this was one of the initiators of this idea.

This piece by Avro Pärt was also extremely helpful in terms of writing choral music to get an idea for vocal harmonisation and how vibrato in soprano and tenor parts cause slight reflections or a faint shimmer between low and high voices, although seemingly imperceptible it is because of the overlapping resonant frequencies that correlate even when relatively separate in pitch (the frequencies of the waveforms share similarities and combine with slight phasing). In my opinion this effect is most resent vocal harmony. We also actually used the same key as this piece (G# minor) in the middle section of our composition.

This is a screenshot of the multitrack recording session done in the bunker, you can see that each section and vocal line is separate to allow me to integrate it into the sound piece that I will eventually produce which will be this choral arrangement combined with a complimentary version of the industrial soundscape which I will post about next. There is some panning to the main microphone channels however that is the only post processing in this work, I intended to keep the Vocal line natural to accentuate the natural reverb of the space as well as the purity of the vocal delivery.

This edit shows what the footage would have looked like but I intend on juxtaposing it with industry so it will have more complex editing, It features the audio recording taken in the bunker and the footage shot at Ogodour. When attempting naturalism it seems pretty naff in my opinion. However I do like the vocal  composition and it is interesting working with the intensity of the music and trying to match it visually, for example at about 2:30 the pause exemplifies the reverb so it works to show the space.
