『ビューティフル・ノイズ：ニール・ダイアモンド・ミュージカル』（A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical）を見た。

本作は、ミュージカルへの使用が想定されていないポピュラー音楽を用いたミュージカル、いわゆる「ジュークボックス・ミュージカル」に属する。「ジュークボックス・ミュージカル」の中でも、『マンマ・ミーア！』や『＆ジュリエット』のように新しい物語を紡ぐタイプと、『ジャージー・ボーイズ』や『MJ』のようにミュージシャンの伝記を描くタイプに分かれる。「アイム・ア・ビリーバー」や「スウィート・キャロライン」で知られるダイアモンドのミュージシャン人生を彼の音楽と共に綴る『ビューティフル・ノイズ』は、後者に該当する。

デビューに至る壁、曲作りの苦しさ、スターダムを駆け上がる爽快さ、成功後の私生活の崩れ、それでも手放せない音楽への愛着といった要素は、大方の伝記型「ジュークボックス・ミュージカル」に見られ、『ビューティフル・ノイズ』も例外ではない。その中で『ビューティフル・ノイズ』が先行作品と異なるのは、ミュージシャンの老いを前面に押し出したことである。

本作は、老いて鬱屈としているニールがカウンセラーに自身の半生を語るという枠組が設けられている。劇中のニールはステージに立って歌う時は輝くが、基本的に陰気でスターとして扱われることに居心地の悪さを覚えている。このように現役時代から「フラットブッシュ出身のニール」としての自身と、名声を獲得した自身との間で引き裂かれていたニールは、老いて一線から退くことでさらに自身の基盤が定まらない不安を抱えこることとなる。老ニールは、年少かつ黒人ということで大して自分の音楽に親しみを持っていないカウンセラーを相手に来し方を振り返り、「フラットブッシュのユダヤ系移民の子ニール」とビッグ・スターとしての自身の共存を図るのである。伝記型「ジュークボックス・ミュージカル」を全て見てきたわけではないが、ライジング・ストーリーとしがちな他作品と比較して、題材とするミュージシャンの老いをはっ���りと描いた点は面白かった。

また、本作でニールは曲作りのモチベーションを脳内に流れる「ビューティフル・ノイズ」を表に出すためと表現するが、その「���ューティフル・ノイズ」は何人ものアンサンブル（その名もThe Noise）によって表現されている点もユニークだと感じた。

このようにいくつか特徴的な要素を備えている『ビューティフル・ノイズ』であったが、どうにも何もかもを活かしきれておらず、もどかしかった。老いたニールの葛藤を際立たせるためには、現役時代のニールが「ただのニール」「ミュージシャンのニール」「家庭人のニール」との折り合いがうまくつけられなくなっていく様子をもう少し丁寧に描くべきだったと思うが、全てがサラサラと流れてしまった。また、「ノイズ」と名付けられたアンサンブルとニールとの関係は全く有機的ではなく、ニールの歌が流れるとアンサンブルも歌って踊り出すが、「ノイズ」の方からニールに働きかけることはなく、頭の中で流れるノイズはそんなに協力的なのか？と若干興ざめした。むしろ勝手に歌ったり踊ったりしてニールを多少悩ませるくらいの描写があった方が、「ノイズ」という名称と整合性がとれていたように思われる。

結局のところ、興味深い試みはいくつか見受けられるのにイマイチ弾けておらず、そのせいでダイアモンド・ファンへの接待のレベルに留まってしまっていると判断せざるを得なかった。演出は『春のめざめ』やオペラ『リゴレット』を手掛けたマイケル・メイヤーだったのに、どこか精細に欠いていて残念だった。
