so apparently not a lot of people know this but. america created (or helped create) [edit: germany actually did create zyklon b but it was first used on humans in america] Zyklon B, which was the gas the nazis used to exterminate Jewish people en masse in concentration camps during the holocaust. people often believe the nazis invented it in the 30s or 40s, but actually it was first invented and used in the 1920s at the mexican american border. it was used to “cleanse” migrant workers, who were forced to strip, shave, and then had to be sprayed with this poison before being permitted entry into the United States. much like how Jewish prisoners in concentration camps were stripped, shaved, and then forced into gas chambers to “cleanse” europe of their presence. afaik america has never apologized for this or paid reparations to Holocaust survivors. or the surviving families of those migrant workers. just something to keep in mind as US politicians continue to pretend that it is their deep love of Jewish people that causes them to support Israel, and not their monetary interests in the region

Nei campi di concentramento nazisti, venne effettuata sperimentazione umana usando come cavie i deportati. Tali esperimenti sono stati ritenuti crudeli, al pari di quelli operati nello stesso periodo dall'Unità 731 dell'esercito giapponese, e per questo medici e amministratori coinvolti furono condannati per crimini contro l'umanità in alcuni Processi secondari di Norimberga. I fini dichiarati erano in molti casi quello di verificare la resistenza umana in condizioni estreme o di sperimentare degli antinfiammatori, ma in alcuni casi i fini non sono riconducibili ad altro che alla perversione del personale medico. Di seguito alcuni esempi tra gli esperimenti condotti con maggiore frequenza.

L'obiettivo dichiarato era quello di studiare le possibilità di salvare un soggetto in caduta da grande altezza. Le domande a cui i medici volevano rispondere erano dunque: può un soggetto lanciatosi con paracadute dall'aereo in fase di volo, o comunque da un'altezza superiore ai 10 km, salvarsi? Quanto resiste un soggetto senza la pressione atmosferica cui è naturalmente abituato? Quali sono le reazioni fisiche di un soggetto a cui si è tolta la pressione atmosferica e in definitiva l'ossigeno? Quali sono le conseguenze nel caso in cui si salvi?

Il dottor Sigmund Rascher, capitano medico della Luftwaffe, ebbe un ruolo di primo piano in questo progetto di sperimentazione, anche per la qualifica che ricopriva, si trovava ad essere in diretto contatto con Heinrich Himmler, dal quale si fece rilasciare l'autorizzazione a procedere. Tali esperimenti vennero condotti su prigionieri del lager di Dachau. I deportati venivano chiusi dentro una stanza in cui veniva abbassata gradualmente la pressione atmosferica, fino ad arrivare alla completa mancanza di ossigeno e alla loro morte. Si ricostruiva in questo modo la caduta di un paracadutista da 12–13 km di altezza. I risultati dovevano verificare o smentire le varie teorie di salvataggio di un soggetto in caduta libera con paracadute (evidentemente l'interesse dell'esperimento era rivolto a quei militari di aviazione che potevano trovarsi in situazioni tali da rendere necessario doversi buttare dall'aereo in fase di volo).

Il dottor Sigmund Rascher seguì anche gli esperimenti sull'ipotermia di cavie umane. L'obiettivo e la condizione da ricostruire erano direttamente legati e conseguenti all'esperimento precedente, ossia: a che condizioni un soggetto gettatosi da un aereo in volo e precipitato in acqua fredda si può salvare? Quanto impiega un soggetto in acqua fredda a morire di congelamento? Ci sono possibilità che un corpo si rianimi dopo l'esposizione prolungata al freddo? Come? Con quali conseguenze? Si ricostruivano, così, le varie possibili conseguenze e le varie possibilità di salvezza. Il dottor Sigmund Rascher ebbe, anche in questo caso, un ruolo di primaria importanza. I deportati che erano stati sottoposti alla selezione e che erano stati scelti per questo progetto venivano immersi in vasche di acqua gelata (gli esperimenti prevedevano che l'acqua fosse ad una temperatura iniziale di 5,2 °C fino a scendere a 4 °C) per un periodo prolungato (fino ad un massimo di 95 minuti). Quando i deportati non morivano dentro la vasca (evento piuttosto raro), i medici indagavano se la rianimazione di esseri umani assiderati fosse più proficua mediante calore animale o mediante medicinali e/o procedimenti fisici. La temperatura corporea dei deportati immersi in acqua si aggirava fra i 21 °C ed i 29 °C, ma alcuni documenti dei medici riportano di deportati che non morivano ancora quando la temperatura scendeva fino a 4 °C. Le vittime venivano quindi poste in un letto e legate strettamente a una o due donne nomadi completamente nude, che facevano per ore (talvolta per giorni) da stufe umane per fare loro riprendere conoscenza. La percentuale di sopravvivenza era relativamente elevata, ma i prigionieri soffrivano poi di disturbi cardiocircolatori e di altre patologie.

Inoltre, in altri esperimenti i soggetti venivano spogliati e poi lasciati all'esterno a temperature estremamente basse per diverse ore, spesso fino al totale congelamento corporeo.

Dal febbraio 1942 all'aprile 1945, nel campo di concentramento di Dachau, furono condotti vari esperimenti atti a investigare le caratteristiche e il trattamento della malaria. Più di 1200 soggetti sani non volontari furono infettati con il morbo attraverso il morso di zanzara o iniezione di ghiandole mucose di zanzare femmine. Più di metà dei pazienti è deceduta in seguito agli esperimenti, e molti tra i sopravvissuti hanno contratto disabilità permanenti.

Tra il settembre 1939 e l'aprile 1945, nei campi di Sachsenhausen, Natzweiler e altri, furono condotti esperimenti per investigare gli effetti sul corpo dell'iprite, noto anche come gas mostarda, e studiare possibili trattamenti delle ferite da esso inflitte. I soggetti venivano deliberatamente sottoposti al gas, riportando così gravi ustioni chimiche, spesso mortali.

Nel campo di Ravensbrück, dal luglio 1942 al settembre 1943, furono condotti vari test per studiare gli effetti della sulfanilamide sulle ferite, al fine di farne uso sul campo di battaglia. Ai soggetti venivano anzitutto inflitte ferite, legando anche i vasi sanguigni ad entrambe le estremità della lesione, così da impedire la circolazione del sangue e simulare una condizione simile a quella d'un soldato ferito. Le ferite venivano poi infettate con vari tipi di batteri, come lo streptococco, la gangrena gassosa o il tetano. Infine, le lacerazione poteva essere aggravata da trucioli di legno o vetro smerigliato. Tali esperimenti portavano a condizioni di estremo dolore e intensa agonia, spesso culminanti nella morte.

Dal settembre del 1942 al dicembre del 1943, nel campo di Ravensbrück, furono condotti vari esperimenti per studiare la rigenerazione di ossa, muscoli e nervi, come anche il trapianto di arti. Durante i trattamenti, alle vittime furono rimossi ossa, muscoli e nervi senza alcun uso di anestesia, causando immenso dolore nonché danni fisici permanenti.

Nel campo di Dachau, nel breve periodo compreso tra luglio e settembre del 1944, gli scienziati nazisti condussero vari test per rendere potabile l'acqua marina. Ciò avveniva deprivando i pazienti di ogni sorta di alimento, costringendoli a ingerire esclusivamente acqua di mare in precedenza modificata chimicamente. Ancora una volta, l'esperimento portò a profondo dolore fisico tutti coloro che ne furono coinvolti.

Questo tipo di esperimento fu condotto su esseri umani in due località, nel lager di Buchenwald (nello specifico, nel block 46) e nel lager di Natzweiler-Struthof, dal dicembre del 1941 al febbraio 1945. Ciò che è noto sugli esperimenti di Buchenwald lo si deve al diario del centro ricerche del dott. Erwin Ding-Schuler, il quale lavorava nel campo, alle deposizioni di vari scienziati europei internati nel lager e costretti a prendere parte a tali esperimenti, e alle deposizioni del dott. Eugen Kogon, che riuscì a salvare il diario e che al processo di Norimberga fu interrogato come testimone. Il dott. Kogon era scrivano del reparto antipetecchiale e virologico nel lager, reparto che era diretto da Ding-Schuler e che dipendeva dall'Istituto d'Igiene di Berlino, a capo del quale c'era l'SS-Oberfuhrer Mrugowsky. Lo scopo era quello di arrivare alla formulazione ed alla produzione di un vaccino da distribuire alle truppe SS che in Oriente erano minacciate dal tifo petecchiale. La scelta del lager non è stata casuale. Infatti, all'interno di Buchenwald erano stati internati degli scienziati da cui ci si aspettava la massima collaborazione (alcuni degli internati cui ci si riferisce sono: Ludwig Fleck, Balachowsky, e van Lingen).

A Buchenwald, l'esperimento veniva condotto estraendo un campione di prigionieri: il 75% di questi sarebbero stati sottoposti all'inoculazione prima del vaccino (o altra sostanza chimica) che si desiderava sperimentare, poi, dopo 3 o 4 settimane, del germe del tifo; il restante 25% sarebbe stato infettato senza alcuna protezione previa, agendo così da metro di paragone. Tali esperimenti portarono alla morte diverse centinaia di internati.

Nell'arco di tempo che va dal dicembre 1943 all'ottobre del 1944, nel campo di Buchenwald, furono condotti diversi esperimenti atti a investigare gli effetti di diversi veleni sul corpo umano. Nel cibo dei soggetti veniva inserita a loro insaputa una tossina, i loro corpi - deceduti a causa del veleno stesso o per mano delle SS subito dopo averlo ingerito - venivano poi sottoposti ad attenta autopsia.

Sempre a Buchenwald, tra il novembre 1943 e il gennaio 1944, furono condotti diversi esperimenti per sviluppare una terapia adatta a guarire le ustioni da fosforo. Queste ustioni venivano procurate sui corpi dei malcapitati utilizzando i materiali delle bombe incendiarie, utilizzate in grande quantità nel contesto della guerra, soprattutto nei bombardamenti aerei.

L'epatite epidemica stava facendo molte vittime fra i soldati tedeschi sul fronte russo, quindi i nazisti decisero di studiarne le cause e trovarvi rimedio. Dopo una serie di studi di laboratorio condotti dal dottore militare Dohmen, il dott. Karl Brandt, uno dei più famigerati medici nazisti, chiese l'autorizzazione a Heinrich Himmler ad avviare l'inoculazione ad esseri umani di ceppi di virus coltivati, portando alla morte molti dei soggetti. Gli esperimenti furono condotti a Sachsenhausen e a Natzweiler dal giugno 1943 fino al gennaio 1945.

Esperimenti di sterilizzazione furono eseguiti ad Auschwitz, nel famigerato Block 10, e a Ravensbrück, dal marzo del 1941 al gennaio 1945, e furono diretti principalmente dai dottori Carl Clauberg e Horst Schumann. L'obiettivo dei test era quello di individuare un metodo di sterilizzazione tanto efficiente da poter garantire, nel minor tempo possibile e utilizzando minime risorse, la sterilizzazione di milioni di persone, verosimilmente nel quadro della soluzione finale. Qualche sopravvissuta a tali esperimenti sostiene che venissero effettuati anche esperimenti di inseminazione artificiale e che le donne prigioniere avevano il terrore che venisse impiantato un mostro nel proprio utero. Questo tipo di esperimenti non è stato provato. L'esperimento di sterilizzazione consisteva nell'iniettare una sostanza caustica nella cervice uterina per ostruire le tube di Falloppio. I soggetti scelti per l'esperimento erano donne sposate di età compresa fra i venti ed i quarant'anni, preferibilmente che avessero avuto già dei figli. L'iniezione veniva eseguita in tre fasi nel giro di qualche mese, anche se alcune superstiti ricordano di aver subito anche cinque iniezioni. Clauberg era un grande ricercatore ed un professionista di considerevole reputazione all'epoca; si consideri, ad esempio, che i preparati ormonali Progynon e Proluton da lui elaborati per curare la sterilità, sono usati ancora oggi, come pure è usato il "test di Clauberg" per misurare l'azione del progesterone.

A fianco alla ricerca di Claudberg, il dott. Schumann, medico e direttore del centro della morte nel programma di eutanasia a Grafeneck, portò avanti una serie di esperimenti per sviluppare un efficiente metodo di castrazione mediante raggi X. Già Viktor Brack, un funzionario della Cancelleria molto attivo nel Programma T4 (l'eliminazione dei disabili tedeschi), aveva escogitato un impianto di sterilizzazione sulla falsariga di una catena di montaggio, operante “in modo del tutto impercettibile” da dietro un banco.

Alla vittima ignara si doveva far credere di riempire dei moduli, operazione destinata a durare per due o tre minuti. Il funzionario seduto dietro il banco metteva in funzione l'apparecchiatura ruotando un interruttore che attivava simultaneamente due valvole termoioniche a raggi X (poiché l'irradiazione doveva operare da entrambi i lati). Con un'installazione a due valvole potevano essere sterilizzate circa 150-200 persone al giorno e quindi, con venti installazioni, sino a 3000-4000 al giorno. Questa era l'idea proposta da Brack, che andava perfettamente d'accordo con l'ideologia nazionalsocialista.

I soggetti sperimentali (maschi giovani abbastanza sani e femmine di età poco inferiore o poco superiore a vent'anni) venivano allineati in una sala d'attesa e introdotti uno per uno, spesso completamente all'oscuro di ciò che si stava preparando per loro. Nella versione successiva, più complessa, progettata dalla ditta Siemens, del macchinario, le ragazze venivano poste fra due lastre che comprimevano loro l'addome e il dorso; gli uomini poggiavano il pene e i testicoli su una lastra speciale. Schumann azionava poi la macchina che emetteva un forte ronzio, e la durata del trattamento arrivava fino a otto minuti. Molte donne uscirono dall'applicazione con ustioni notevoli, che potevano infettarsi; molte svilupparono sintomi di peritonite, fra cui febbre, forti dolori e vomito. Dopo l'esposizione ai raggi X, le ovaie delle donne venivano asportate chirurgicamente ed esaminate in laboratorio per accertare se i raggi X fossero stati o no efficaci nella distruzione dei tessuti. Gli uomini non subivano una sorte migliore. Oltre agli eritemi da scottatura attorno allo scroto, i posteriori racconti delle vittime parlano della raccolta del loro sperma, e del brutale massaggio della prostata per mezzo di pezzi di legno introdotti nel retto. Veniva poi effettuato un intervento chirurgico al fine di asportare un testicolo, o entrambi. Gli sviluppi postoperatori erano disastrosi e comprendevano emorragie, setticemie, assenza di tono muscolare conseguente alle ferite, cosicché molti morivano rapidamente, mentre altri venivano mandati a fare un lavoro che li avrebbe fatti morire in poco tempo. Al termine della lunga serie di sperimentazioni, Schumann, scrivendo a Himmler, concluse che metodo dei raggi x si dimostrava tanto infruttuoso quanto eccessivamente costoso, consigliando quindi la castrazione chirurgica come unico metodo efficace per la sterilizzazione.

Questo esperimento rifletté un interesse scientifico del dottor Eduard Wirths, il medico capo delle SS ad Auschwitz, che ordinò la messa in atto di diversi esperimenti ginecologici su varie donne ebree rinchiuse nel Blocco 10 di Auschwitz I.

Gli esperimenti erano condotti da Josef Mengele, ad Auschwitz II ovvero a Birkenau, e riflettevano il desiderio da parte del medico di dimostrare la superiorità della razza ariana sulle altre. Mengele riteneva che i segreti della razza risiedessero nei gemelli omozigoti, perciò i suoi studi si concentrarono prevalentemente su tali soggetti, trovando nel campo di Birkenau innumerevoli cavie (si stimano 3.000 gemelli in totale), nonché l'ambiente adatto per portare avanti le proprie ricerche senza alcun vincolo di natura morale, trattando i pazienti come veri e propri "topi da laboratorio".

I bambini venivano isolati dalle famiglie (solo nel caso dei neonati era talvolta concesso alle madri di accompagnarli) e chiusi in una baracca. Era loro concesso di giocare e svagarsi, senza alcuna imposizione di lavoro, tuttavia erano sottoposti quotidianamente ad una vasta gamma di esperimenti. Anzitutto, i loro corpi venivano esaminati con attenzione, comparati con quelli dei corrispettivi gemelli e meticolosamente catalogati. Poi venivano sottoposti a continui prelievi del sangue, iniezioni di farmaci o, nei casi peggiori, interventi chirurgici, spesso effettuati senza alcuna anestesia, che talvolta risultavano in amputazioni di intere parti del corpo. Quando un gemello moriva, anche l'altro veniva ucciso - spesso con un'iniezione di fenolo fatta direttamente al cuore dallo stesso Mengele - per fare un'autopsia comparativa. Al momento della liberazione di Birkenau, solo 200 dei "bambini di Mengele" erano sopravvissuti.

Degni di nota fu inoltre l'interesse che il medico presentò per l'iride umana, in particolare per i casi di eterocromia, ovvero persone aventi due occhi di colore differente. Lo scopo degli studi era quello di individuare un metodo efficace per modificare la pigmentazione dell'iride, mutando quelli scuri in azzurri, tratto che, secondo l'ideologia nazista, contraddistingueva gli appartenenti alla razza ariana. Di solito, l'esperimento si configurava come un'iniezione di metilene blu direttamente nell'iride del paziente. Gli esperimenti non ottennero mai alcun successo, ma ebbero per conseguenza immensa sofferenza e talvolta una cecità permanente per le cavie.

Gli esperimenti vennero condotti a partire dal luglio 1944 nel campo di concentramento di Buchenwald dal medico SS danese Carl Peter Vaernet e consistevano nell'impianto di una "ghiandola artificiale", nella quale erano contenute massicce dosi di testosterone, su deportati omosessuali, alla ricerca di una cura che avrebbe dovuto rendere eterosessuali i soggetti trattati. I test si rivelarono un completo fallimento, come dimostra il rapporto finale che lo stesso Vaernet consegnò a Himmler nel febbraio 1945, in cui non se ne fa alcuna menzione.

Es gibt Hotelzimmer das sind von der Ausstattung her regelrechte Sterbezimmer!

nZuletzt erhielt ich solche Zimmer fast nur noch angeboten! 

Stets offerierte man sie mir auf sehr großzügige Weise umsonst! 

Der Standard war erkennbar dann wieder ein sehr ordentlicher! Es ist erkennbar kein Hotel der unteren Kategorie!

Vom benutzten Kopfkissen oder in der Bettwäsche beginnt der Gast unweigerlich und immer mehr zu husten. Er bemerkt, die Klimaanlage ruft das gleiche bei ihm auch hervor. Er sieht sich dadurch genötigt entweder bei offenen Fenstern oder der Terrassentür zu schlafen. 

Auf den Fluren wird dann vielleicht sehr sanfte Musik gespielt, so wie zuletzt geschehen! Sie kommt aus nicht sichtbaren Lautsprechern, vermutlich in den Wänden. Sie wirkt zusätzlich ermüdend auf uns! So als wäre diese direkt von Gespenstern gemacht, so klingt auch der Gesang! Wir stiegen direkt bald auch selber dadurch vielleicht in den Himmel auf!

Dann bemerkt dieser Gast vielleicht, er leidet immer stärker unter auch einem sehr lautem unangenehmen Pfeifton in beiden Ohren! Das wiederum ist dann der berühmte Tinnitus! Und auch hier dürfte er aus verborgen angebrachten Boxen oder Lautsprechern stammen! Neben dem dass er bereits hustet leidet er jetzt noch genauso unter auch wachsendem Ohrenschmerz!

Sheriffs erzählen uns etwas über ihre wertvolle Ermittlungsarbeit in den USA! Polizisten, diesmal sind es deutsche, werden gezeigt bei der Verhaftung sich wiederspenstig gebender Diebe aus dem Autohaus: “Wir können durchaus auch an ders!!” Dann wieder wird uns eine noch echte Familienidylle von Farbigen gezeigt in Form eines Spielfilmes, sie spielt in amerikanischen Vororten von Großstädten! Denzel Washington spielt eine der Hauptrollen darin! Es geht um die eigenen Freunde, wann sind es echte, wann sind sie es vielleicht nicht! 

Dann wird - es ist bereits früher Morgen - von Militärexperten darüber debattiert, ob der wichtigste deutsche Kampfpanzer der Theo 2 oder der Leonhard nun ‘kommt’ und Berlin ihn Kiel nun liefert oder nicht! *Verzeihung: es war Kiew!! Den Gerhardt besäße man ja längst dort schon! Es könne aber sein, damit der Kanzler  zustimmte, müssten die USA erst eigene Abrahams liefern, und zwar bereits noch vorher, so einer dieser Experten!

Zac Efron und der (deutlich gealterte) Robert de Niro als Schauspieler und ungleiches Freundespaar und Besitzer eines kunterbunten Verkauf-vans für Italo-eis in den USA! Plötzlich tauchen auch sie auf dem Bildschirm auf! De Niro will dabei mithelfen dass sein viel jüngerer Freund und seine große Liebe, welche im Streit auseinandergingen, zueinander zurückfinden! Doch ihnen folgen Polizisten! Aber auch sie sind keine Unmenschen, angesichts der großen Liebe des Paares welche sich gerade erst offiziell wieder auf dem Highway während einer rasanten und lang anhaltenden Verfolgunsjagd begegnet ist und zu sich zurückgefunden hat, sehen sie von der Verhaftung ab! Auch stimmte es, wie von der anderen Seite mehrfach angegeben, dass sie gar keine für den Highway zuständigen Sheriffs seien, und auch nicht von der Bundespolizei oder Statepolice, sondern einfache Streifencops aus der nahen Stadt, sodass die Berechtigung dafür in der Tat zur Gänze fehle! Es kommt zum großformatigen Liebeshappy-end ... unter dem lauten Beifall de Niros wie der Polizei!! Inklusive einem besonders lang anhaltendem Kuss, erst dann blendet der Film aus!

*Was mich daran aber erneut sehr verwunderte, ist oder war: ein solches stark ähnliches Paar ungleicher Freunde, zumindest was den Altersunterschied beider angeht, das gibt es so bis heute auch woanders! 

Und es bestünde dann sogar zwischen A. Mahone als Amerikaner und mir!

Ein echtes Paar oder Liebespaar, das sind ja auch wir nie wirklich gewesen! Oder dass es über eine reine, aber vielleicht manchmal doch sehr tief empfundene Freundschaft je so auch bei uns hinausgereicht hätte!! Auch war ich bislang überzeugt, Mahone denkt diesbezüglich ebenso!

From late 1941 through 1942, with the full knowledge of the Allies, the #Nazis methodically worked out a quieter, cheaper, and more efficient manner of killing the #Jews of #Europe.

The Nazis would use a prussic acid-based pesticide called #ZyklonB (bottom left) that would be released in large gas chambers to be built in death camps, mostly in #Poland. 

Using this process, the Nazis would be able to “cleanly and quietly” murder masses of Jews all at once, in a matter of minutes, and without a single shot fired.

After successful small-scale testing of Zyklon-B, the Nazis held the #Wannsee Conference in #Berlin on January 20, 1942, to discuss implementing the plan.

Surviving protocols and notes from the conference show high-ranking Nazis (including Heydrich and Eichmann, among others) discussed the use of short-term #Jewish #slave labor for the able-bodied who would be worked and starved to death, the separation of Jewish men from Jewish women at the camps, the mass deportations to the camps from across Nazi-occupied #Europe, and the mass gassing of the Jews to ensure an efficient and quiet “Final Solution to the Jewish problem.”

The less than 90-minute conference laid out the plan and gave the orders to carry it out. 

With at least 1.5 million (probably more) #European Jews already dead, the Nazis had now marked for death the remaining Jews of Nazi-occupied Europe, which they estimated at 5-6 million.

And so, the #gaschambers and #crematoria were built while Adolf Eichmann was put in charge of logistics for the mass deportation of Jews to the camps.

On July 15, 1942, the Nazis had made enough progress for the first deportation train to leave from #Holland to #Auschwitz (by Sept 1944, more than 100 trains would deliver more than 100,000 Jews of Holland to the death camps).

The very next day, on July 16, 1942, the occupied #French submitted to their Nazi overlords and began the roundup of #France’s Jews en masse with 13,152 Jews, including 4,051 children, in what is known as the “Vel ’d’Hiv.” 

All 13,152 French Jews of all ages were transported by train to Auschwitz in southern Poland while trapped inside locked, cramped cattle cars without food, without water, and without toilets.

These “round-ups” were not quiet, and Allied sources were well-placed in Holland and France. So, the Allies knew almost immediately about the mass deportations of Jews to the east.

Meanwhile, Eduard Schulte – one of the most powerful, prominent, and successful #German industrialists, who also enjoyed a career of unrivaled political access – secretly wanted to see #Hitler and the Nazis gone from power. He kept his intentions quiet while repeatedly using his access (which included Hitler’s headquarters) to gain useful information to pass along to the Allies.

In late July 1942, Schulte was once again inside Hitler’s headquarters when he heard Nazi leadership discussing the progress of the “Final Solution” including the status of the mass deportation of Jews to the camps in the east and the preparations for mass usage of gas chambers to exterminate all remaining Jews with Zyklon-B.

Schulte decided to bring this information to Gerhard Riegner, a representative of the World Jewish Congress who was living in neutral #Switzerland on August 1, 1942.

Riegner knew Schulte was a serious man. And Riegner was able to ask around and learn that Schulte was already a trusted Allied informant who had repeatedly passed them useful and truthful information (including the exact timing of the German invasion of the Soviet Union).

So, Riegner went to his friend, Paul Chapin Squire, the #American consul in #Geneva, and asked to use the #StateDepartment’s cable facilities to send a message to #Rabbi Stephen Wise – the head of the American Jewish #Congress and the most prominent American Jew at the time who was also friendly with several government officials, and who even met with FDR from time to time.

By using the State Department cables, it ensured Riegner both that his message would be sent securely and that the U.S. State Department would be an immediate recipient of his message.

The following text comes directly from Reigner’s cable of August 11, 1942:

Received ALARMING REPORT that in #FUHRER’S HEADQUARTERS plan discussed … according to which ALL JEWS IN COUNTRIES OCCUPIED OR CONTROLLED BY #GERMANY … should after deportation and concentration in east be EXTERMINATED … to resolve once and for all the Jewish Question in Europe … Methods under discussion including PRUSSIC ACID … Informant stated to have close connections with HIGHEST GERMAN AUTHORITIES and his REPORTS … [are] RELIABLE.

By this time, the State Department already knew of the mass deportations of Jews from #Paris, Holland, #Berlin, #Vienna, and #Prague to Nazi camps in the east. And, just four days later, on August 15, 1942, they learned of another mass round-up of Jews in France with 7,000 more Jewish men, women, and children being arrested and handed over to the Germans.

The U.S. government also knew by then that a minimum of 1-1.5 million Jews had already been killed over the last year during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union.

In other words, the Reigner cable describing the purpose of the mass deportations of Jews eastward seemed a logical, if horrifying, explanation of the Nazis’ intentions.

The State Department then confirmed from its own intelligence sources that Riegner was “a serious and balanced individual and that he would never have come to the Consulate … if he had not had confidence in his informant's reliability.”

After sending the cable, Riegner next went to the British Consulate where he provided the same information and issued the same cable.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department discussed what to do with the information. By consensus, they decided to ignore the cable and also to suppress it to ensure it did not leak out to anyone else, and they marked it “unconfirmed information” to let everyone know it was to be ignored. Therefore, the U.S. State Department never gave the cable to Rabbi Wise.

The #British Foreign Office, however, made the opposite decision. While they ultimately deferred in many ways to the U.S., the British would (at least initially) not suppress or ignore the Riegner cable, and they even delivered it to the London branch of the World Jewish Congress on August 17, 1942, as requested by Riegner.

In fact, that’s the only way Rabbi Wise found out about the existence of Riegner’s cable. He received it from the London World Jewish Conference on August 28, 1942 – 17 days after Riegner had tried to send him the cable.

When Rabbi Wise read the words, “ALL JEWS,” “EXTERMINATED,” “PRUSSIC ACID,” and “RELIABLE,” his heart skipped a beat, and then he immediately got in touch with Under Secretary of State Sumner Welles – a man who had previously seemed sympathetic to the plight of the Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe.

But, though he did not say so at the time to Rabbi Wise, Welles was already very familiar with the Riegner cable, and he was even among those in the State Department who approved the plan to ignore the cable, suppress the cable, and ensure the cable did not reach Rabbi Wise.

Now realizing Rabbi Wise had found out anyway, Welles immediately instructed Rabbi Wise that he was not to share this information with anyone or allow it to be leaked to the press, at least until the U.S. government could “confirm its validity.”

Meanwhile, Riegner had been pacing the wood off the floor in his home in Geneva waiting for some sort of response. Since August 13, 1942, “neutral” Switzerland had begun forcing Jews, mostly French refugees that had escaped to Switzerland, back across the border to be included in the mass deportations.

Riegner had immediately done what he thought was the best thing to do to try to save as many of the condemned Jews as possible. The complete silence that followed his cable would later be described by Riegner as “my great agony.”

Meanwhile, during this same moment in the war, mostly British troops (and, increasingly, American troops) were facing off against the Nazis’ most decorated, successful, and respected general, Erwin Rommel, in the campaign in North #Africa.

This was one of the most dangerous points in the war when the scales could have permanently tipped in the Nazis’ favor.

Rommel was closing in on the #SuezCanal and eventually the entire #MiddleEast. Such a Nazi victory could have been enough to “checkmate” the Allies by cutting off their oil supply while leaving the Germans flush with as much oil as they could ever need along with control over the means to move it.

The British and American dependence on a #Soviet victory over the Nazis was, at that time, also very much in doubt.

The Soviets were locked in the most bitter fight of their lives with the infamous Battle of #Stalingrad beginning on August 23, 1942.

The British and Americans knew that the fall of the #SovietUnion to the Nazis meant the end of the eastern campaign, and a Nazi windfall of Russia’s vast territory, resources, and military capacity.

One could argue this was the most dangerous point in the entire war.

But the Allies received other horrifying news in August 1942. Only this news was horrifying enough to the Allies to cause them to take humanitarian action.

Specifically, the Nazi-occupied Greeks were running out of food and were facing a famine of biblical proportions that could have killed upwards of 2 ½ million #Greek citizens.

The Americans and the British took decisive action to save the Greeks from starvation despite all of #Greece being occupied by the Nazis.

Even in this decisive moment, the Americans and the British gave their time and diverted their resources to ensure 35,000 tons of food would be delivered into the hands of the Greek people (and not just stolen by the Germans) every month without fail for the next two years.

Great Britain was ultimately in charge of shipping the food, and it was all paid for by the United States to the tune of $30 million per year ($60 million in total).

Remember what the Allies did to save 2 ½ million Greeks “at risk” of starvation as you continue to read about the Allies’ reaction to the continued receipt of more and more corroborating and irrefutable information and evidence of the deportation and mass slaughter of the Jews of Europe.

Then ask yourself:

· What did the Allies do to help, as they did the Greeks, to save the Jews in Nazi concentration camps who were starving to death?

· What did the Allies do to save the enslaved Jews who were being worked to death?

· What did the Allies do to save the millions of Jews being marched to their deaths in the gas chambers?

The simple answer to all three questions is, “nothing.”

These Jews were not “simply” human beings “at risk” of starvation. They were Jewish men, women, children, and babies who were all marked for systematic, industrialized death by gassing simply because they were born Jewish; and both the Americans and the British knew it.

$60 million and countless diverted resources were spent just to feed the Nazi-occupied Greeks – a noble humanitarian gesture. But, in contrast, $0 was spent and no resources were diverted to save any of the condemned millions of Jews.

Even once the political pressure finally turned (after at least 4-5 million Jews were already dead) and #FDR finally acted in January 1944, his action was limited to setting up the small and dramatically understaffed War Refugee Board with the goal of saving at least some of Europe’s Jews.

After more than a year and a half in operation, the War Refugee Board received total funding in the amount of $11 million (a meager 18% of the amount the U.S. spent just feeding the Nazi-occupied Greeks).

And over the course of that same year and a half, the War Refugee Board save maybe as many as 200,000 Jews. And this is wonderful. But it does not change the fact that 6 million innocent Jewish men, women, children, and babies were dead, and they certainly did not all have to be.

In comparison, the Americans and the British fed the starving Greeks for two years and are said to have saved around 2 ½ million Greeks while a comparatively meager 200,000-300,000 Greeks were dead.

Meanwhile, the small group of Jews in Washington and London who were “in the know,” but who were sworn to secrecy, waited in nervous limbo to hear something, anything, from their governments about the truth of the Reigner cable and what great plans the Allies might have to help save the Jews of Europe.

They waited. And their days of waiting turned into weeks. Then their weeks of waiting turned into months.

During these months of waiting, the U.S. government was receiving report after report from all different sources – each one confirming the fate of Europe’s Jews, and each one ignored and suppressed along with the Riegner cable.

The deafening silence continued.

As one example, on August 26, 1942 (two days before Rabbi Wise even received the Riegner cable), U.S. ambassador to the Polish government-in-exile and a close personal friend of FDR, Anthony J. Drexel Biddle, Jr., wrote an 8-page, single-spaced memorandum directly to President Roosevelt, which he marked as having the “highest importance.”

Biddle wrote in painstaking detail of the deportations of Europe’s Jews and of Hitler’s Final Solution that would see the entire Jewish people annihilated. A few sentences from his memo sent directly to FDR follows:

"There is no precedent for such organized wholesale dying in all Jewish history, nor indeed in the whole history of mankind."

"This war is not being waged with bombs and guns alone, nor will the nature of the coming world be determined only by the outcome of battles. The victory of morality is the issue in this war. Should we succeed in no more than mitigating the enemy's foul design against his most hated victim it would amount to partial victory."

The memo was ignored. The memo was suppressed.

Shortly thereafter, the U.S. government received confirmation from another source who had just returned from a different European country.

Dr. Donald A. Lowrie was a well-respected American with close contacts in the federal government, and he had just returned from assignment in the unoccupied portion of southern France doing work for the #YMCA.

Lowrie had seen the deportation process of the Jews first-hand that was being performed by French #Vichy collaborators. And he understood those Jews were likely being shipped to their deaths.

Lowrie recalled with tears the way the Nazis tried to calmly reassure the French Jewish adults that they were merely being resettled to the east where there would be more room for them to live and more food for them to eat; and they were told their children would join them shortly, and together they could start new lives.

Then, Lowrie broke down as a recalled the agony on the faces of the Jewish parents who were tempted to believe the Nazis, but who were also terrified both of leaving their children behind and of helping the Nazis by bringing their children along to the likely certain death they faced.

The Jews who wanted to believe the Nazis, believed them. After all, it had been well-established for the prior 1,000 years that Jews were commonly expelled from their host European nations – it had happened many dozens of times, and each time the Jews managed to start over again.

But the French Jews were not stupid, and all of them had heard the rumors. They all knew of the Nazis’ brutality and their desire to rid the world of every Jew.

Deep down, most of them – whether they admitted it to themselves or not – knew that the only thing awaiting them to the east was death.

Lowrie recalled watching as these French Jewish parents agonizingly debated which fate was more likely and what to do with their children. Lowrie would later write that he would “never forget the moment when these truckloads of children left the camps with parents crying in one last gaze to fix an image to last an eternity.”

Lowrie’s story was ignored. Lowrie’s story was suppressed.

Meanwhile, all throughout these months of silence during August, September, October, and November of 1942, Riegner continued to receive further details on the fate of the Jews from reliable first-hand witnesses. Each time, he went to the U.S. Consulate and delivered a cable with the new information.

Every cable was ignored. Every cable was suppressed.

Next came information directly to the U.S. government from yet another trusted source. Specifically, a minister stationed in Berne, Switzerland named Leland Harrison ensured delivery of four sworn statements from direct eyewitnesses to the extermination of Jews every day in the death camps by the thousands using Zyklon-B gas.

After nearly four months of ignoring and suppressing the details of the Jews’ extermination, the U.S. government finally realized that the details were coming in too quickly and from too many different sources in too many different countries. The U.S. could not suppress the information any longer.

On November 24, 1942, Welles asked Rabbi Wise to come to his office, which he did at once.

Mr. Welles sat Rabbi Wise down and confirmed the truth of the systematic slaughter of every Jew in Europe was happening. 

Specifically, he told Rabbi Wise, the U.S. government had received enough documents and information (some of which he held in his hand as he spoke) that, “I regret to tell you … that these [documents] confirm and justify your deepest fears.”

Welles told a stunned silent Rabbi Wise, “For reasons you will understand, I cannot give these [documents] to the press, but there is no reason why you should not. It might even help if you did.”

No longer actively suppressing the information about the Jews’ extermination, the American government was still not ready to officially admit to it.

So, Rabbi Wise sat for a moment in thought. He wondered how many hundreds of thousands of Jews were murdered by the Nazis as he sat quietly waiting to hear back from the U.S. government. And then he realized that even after all that time, the only thing the U.S. government was prepared to do was “permit him” to tell the press what he knew.

Rabbi Wise hastily called for a press conference where he announced that the State Department had confirmed to him that all of Europe’s Jews were in the process of being systematically slaughtered. He also reported his belief that at least 2 million European Jews were already dead (the number was actually much higher by then), and that at least 4-5 million more were in immediate peril.

The following day, on November 25, 1942, newspapers across the U.S. finally informed the American public that the Nazis were systematically murdering every Jew in Europe using gas chambers in death camps located mostly in Poland.

For example, the

 headline read, “Two Million Jews Slain.” But this news was not big enough to make it above the fold. It was not even front-page news. The Washington Post did what so many others did. They buried the story on page 6.
