In Guy Maddin's Rumours, What's Amazing is That There's No Secret Societies At Work Here
If you love farces, then Rumours is for you. This bizarre #apocalypse #horror movie from Guy Maddin & Evan and Galen Johnson has lots to like, and I feel the #folkhorror style elements are done just right. #moviereview at:
Now playing at select theatres Spoiler Alert When Guy Maddin’s Rumours gets heavy with absurdist humour and presents a group of world leaders as inept, this movie may well be his most bizarre to date. That’s because of the setup: these folks have gathered to deal with some unknown global crisis. And as for whether the mud people they discover is part of it or not, that’s a mystery they’ll have to…

Rumours (dirs. Guy Maddin, Evan & Galen Johnson) x VIFF 2024.
Set at a Group of Seven (G7) conference gathering the less than esteemed political leaders of the world's richest nations, Maddin and the Johnsons use the intergovernmental economic forum to mine plenty of goofy satirical material under the guise of writing a joint provisional statement after an unspecified global crisis. Starring an accented Cate Blanchett as the Chancellor of Germany, her and her international cohorts bumble through a surreal treatise of political collaboration after everyone else disappears and they get lost in a German forest. The Winnipeger directors present a glossily-lit soap opera satire more reminiscent of a summer camp slasher flick than a serious government summit, but that seems like precisely the point.
Screened at the 2024 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Special Presentations series.
Screening at the VIFF Centre from Nov. 18–21.

Triangle of Sadness (2022)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Triangle of Sadness has an early scene, lasting a few minutes, where cameras are flashing constantly from all directions. The opening NEON production company logo has a strobe effect. A few scenes are lit by flickering campfires at night.
Scenes taking place on a rocking and tilting ship may be disorienting.
Flashing Lights: 8/10. Motion Sickness: 4/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: An entire sequence is filled with excessive on-screen vomiting, with a couple of minutes of warning as people get seasick. During this sequence, we hear the sound of violent diarrhea for about half a minute. An extended gross-out gag involves a massive overflow of a sewage system. The sounds of an animal in pain are heard repeatedly in one scene.

Rumours Review: A Surreal but Flawed Experience
TL;DR – A film that had a premise for half an hour that is stretched out to a feature and even a cast list like this can’t fix that central issue. Surrealism for just the sake of being surreal. ⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 2.5 out of 5. Post-Credit Scene – There is no post-credit scene.Disclosure – I was invited to a screening of this film.Warning – Contains scenes that may cause distress. Rumours Review…

TIFF 2024: Rumours: A Baffling Mess That Should Have Stayed a Rumor
I don’t mind watching bad movies as long as they have a good story to tell. But when you have an excellent cast, it gets even more exciting because at least there’s some hope. However, if you mix a good cast with a terrible story, an unwatchable concept, and an awful execution, what do you get? A disaster. And believe me, Rumours is worse than that. Let’s start with the basics: I’m not even sure…
