Zimbabwe’s “RTGS Dollar” Can Be Used to Purchase New Gold Coins; Not So for 2008 Zim Inflation Currency

Zimbabwe's Central Bank recently introduced a new set of gold coins in a bid to boost the country's economy. The coins, which come in denominations of 2, 5, 10, and 20 Zimbabwean dollars, are said to be made from locally sourced gold.

The introduction of the new coins has been met with mixed reactions, with some Zimbabweans expressing excitement at the prospect of having a new form of currency, while others have raised concerns about the practicality of using gold coins in everyday transactions.

Which Zim Currencies Can Be Used to Purchase the Coins?

One of the main questions that has been raised is whether RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) dollars can be used to purchase the gold coins. RTGS dollars are Zimbabwe's official currency and are used for electronic transactions, but they are not widely accepted by all merchants.

According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the new gold coins can be purchased using any form of legal tender, including RTGS dollars. This means that Zimbabweans who have RTGS dollars can use them to buy the gold coins.

What about Zimbabwe’s 2008 Hyperinflation Currency?

Unfortunately for collectors around the world who have made the 2008 $100 Trillion Zimbabwe banknote one of the most popular numismaic collectibles of all-time, they won’t be able to help land the new gold Zimbabwe coins.

The reason is rather simple. 2008 Zimbabwean money cannot be used to buy anything, much less cold coins. In 2008-2009, Zimbabwe experienced hyperinflation, and as a result, the currency became practically worthless. In response, the Zimbabwean government abandoned the Zimbabwean dollar and adopted a multi-currency system. The primary currencies used in Zimbabwe are now the US dollar, the South African rand, and other foreign currencies. At the height of the hyperinflation, Zimbabwe released a $100 trillion dollar bill, which at its height was worth something like $1.36 USD.

Gold coins, like any other goods or services, typically require a recognized currency or a form of payment that is widely accepted. Since the 2008 Zimbabwean money is no longer in use and has no value, it cannot be used to purchase gold coins or any other items. If you're interested in buying gold coins, you would need to use a recognized currency or another form of payment accepted by the seller.

However, while officiallt the RTGS dollar can be used to purchase the coins, some experts have warned that using RTGS dollars to purchase gold coins may not be the most practical option. This is because the value of gold is constantly fluctuating, and it may be difficult for merchants to accurately determine the value of the coins in RTGS dollars.

Despite these concerns, the introduction of the new gold coins is seen as a positive step towards stabilizing Zimbabwe's economy, which has been struggling for years due to hyperinflation and a shortage of foreign currency.

The use of gold as a form of currency is not new in Zimbabwe. The country has a rich history of gold mining, and gold was once used as a medium of exchange before the introduction of paper currency.

Over the longer term, the Federation of Malaya and the United Arab Emirates proved relatively stable independent states, while their Central African counterpart broke apart, after mass protests and inept colonial repression, into the nations of Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

At the 16th annual BRICS summit (22-24 October), member states adopted the ‘Kazan Declaration’, with provisions to strengthen multilateralism, enhance cooperation for global and regional stability and security, foster economic and financial cooperation, and strengthen people-to-people exchanges for social and economic development. They also approved a BRICS ‘grain exchange’ to ensure food stability.

At the summit, the bloc of five original members (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) plus four new members (Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates) welcomed using local currencies for transactions between BRICS countries and their trading partners.

Many African presidents have called for de-dollarisation, but the biggest win may be when Saudi Arabia pulls away from a decades-old petrodollar deal with the US.

The US dollar was pegged to gold’s value until US President Richard Nixon (1913-94) removed the gold standard in 1971. Since then, the US has printed the world’s reserve currency at will, sealing its status as a global hegemon.

In Mozambique, agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and the country has a great potential for growth in the sector. Agriculture employs more than 80 percent of the labour force and provides livelihoods to the vast majority of over 23 million inhabitants. Agriculture contributed 31.5 percent of the GDP in 2009, while commerce and services accounted for 44.9 percent. By contrast, 20 percent of the total export value in 2009 originated from the agriculture sector, mostly through the export of fish (mainly shrimps and prawns), timber, copra, cashew nuts and citrus, cotton, coconuts, tea and tobacco.[14]

There are large mineral deposits, but exploration has been constrained by the civil war (1977–1992) and poor infrastructure. The World Bank has estimated that there was the potential for exports worth US$200m by 2005 – in the late 1990s they totaled US$3.6m, some 1% of total exports, and a contribution of less than 2% of GDP. Minerals currently being mined include marble, bentonite, coal, gold, bauxite, granite, titanium and gemstones. Mozambique exported its first batch of coal in 2011 and expects to become the world's largest coal exporter. An inverted winger is a modern tactical development of the traditional winger position. Most wingers are assigned to either side of the field based on their footedness, with right-footed players on the right and left-footed players on the left.[65] This assumes that assigning a player to their natural side ensures a more powerful cross as well as greater ball protection along the touch-lines. The "false 10" or "central winger"[55] is a type of midfielder, which differs from the trequartista. As for me personally, I bought a quarter-million Iraqi dinar just this past weekend. I only own a couple million, but I’m kind of regretting not buying more Zimbabwe currency after learning that they’ll be switching to a gold-backed digital currency. I don’t know if that means the 2008 notes are back in play or just the Zimbabwe RTGS dollar, but I suppose we’ll find out and soon.

It was introduced in April at a rate of *13.6 ZiG per U.S* . dollar and has since lost almost 80% of its value on the black market.

Wheat farmers have refused to be paid in the local currency instead they want payment solely in United States dollars.

President *_Emmerson Mnangagwa_* 's government has buckled under pressure and will now pay in US Dollars.

For now, the use of the local currency has been turned into part-time legal tender.

In May, the government unleashed Republic police, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe's Financial Intelligence Unit and Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission on people rejecting new ZiG currency and to try to enforce the acceptance of ZiG.

Some businesses, such as gas stations, refuse to accept the ZiG in favor of U.S. dollars.

Across Zimbabwe, it is widely used for paying rent, school fees and to buy groceries. Many citizens, including government workers, take their local currency earnings to the black market to trade for dollars.

Some departments, like the office that issues and renews passports, also accept only greenbacks. Many others still list their fees in U.S. dollars, although they accept the equivalent in local currency.
