In response to industry demand for consistent information on alternative music sales and radio airplay, Billboard magazine recently introduced Modern Rock Tracks, a weekly 30-position chart surveying progressive commercial and non-commercial rock stations. The Modern Rock Tracks chart runs adjacent to the Album Rock Tracks chart. Billboard`s initial Modern Rock Tracks reporting panel is made up of 29 influential radio stations — 18 commercial, 11 college operated. Panelists reporting for the chart include renowned post-modern rock stations KROQ Los Angeles and KITS San Francisco. The new chart is a significant move. When mainstream rock radio began tightening play lists, more record labels — especially independent companies — turned to alternative stations for airplay. Since then, the importance of those stations has been proven in the chart- topping success of Tracy Chapman, the wide-ranging appeal of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers and continuing sales of acts such as 10,000 Maniacs, Depeche Mode and The Cure — acts that still receive spotty airplay on other radio formats.
