My January 2024 Reads

Hi everyone, as every month I would like to review the books I read this month was such a fun one because it had everything from demigods and monsters to fantasy stories and romances and I liked most of them. Also, I finally found two books of one of my favorite series I read last year and I am very excited to talk about them here. There are nine of them so let’s start I will leave also the Goodreads link for you to check them out if you want.

The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #1) (Rick Riordan): I started reading because I started watching the amazing Disney adaptation of it and it was so worth it. The plot was amazing and had adventure, suspense, and everything. I loved the mythology of it. I liked the characters of the gods and the heroes, especially the three protagonists. I also liked learning about the world of the books. It was an enjoyable and entertaining read.

Percy Jackson’s Gods (Rick Riordan): I love Greek mythology and knew all of these stories as I read books about and attended a classroom as a child.  I liked Percy’s versions and I loved the writing, how it was from Percy’s point of view and his perception of the gods. It was hilarious. I love that the main Olympians started from the ladies to the men with Zeus in the last place. I liked the illustrations in the electronic version I read too, they were really good. If it were a younger person reading it, the illustrations would carefully capture its attention.

The Wicked Prince (Once Upon A Prince #4) (Celest Baxendell): I loved the story of Robin Hood since I was a little girl and saw Disney’s version of the story as a child. It was a retelling of itself with animals as the characters and I loved it so much that I have seen it, plenty of times since. I liked this once, even if it was very different with the Rodin as a woman and Prince John as her suitor, and not as bad as all the other versions.  I liked the protagonists' characters and backstories, especially how Robin went from Roberta to Robin and started poaching. I liked that John was caring and did so much for her like the painting of her parents. I would likely recommend it to someone to give it a try.

The Queen of the Sea (The Wheel of the Crowns #5) (Brandi Elledge): I liked this one as much as I liked most books in this series. They are fantasy, and romance books with a lot of action and plot twists. They have enjoyable characters, action scenes, and many fantasy elements; this was the same in all these departments. I liked Malakian and Sasha and their friends to lovers’ story as it was different from the rest of the series. It still had the keys and the portals but had a different kind of lore that I greatly enjoyed.

The Doomsayer Queen (The Wheel of the Crowns #6) (Brandi Elledge): I loved the last book of this series! I loved the protagonists and Jo was always one of my favorite characters. I also liked that I saw all of my favorite couples in the last chapters of this book, especially as they came together to help Jo who had helped them in all the other books and gave them their love stories. I found pretty funny the fact that she helped everyone else to find their mate and, in the end, she did not recognize he own. I also liked the last vision of the two children, I love the couple that has a child, Tamara, the Zombie Queen, and the Death, Wes, and also another woman that Jo helped. It was a good ending to the series and worth reading.

Spellbound in the Stacks (K. Iwancio): I liked this paranormal romance about a witch, who is a bookstore owner, and if in three weeks she doesn’t find her true love, she will become a cat for the rest of her life. It was a really funny book and it had great characters especially Faeline and Hera, her mother was really good as I had a very strenuous relationship. I loved Aidan too, the firefighter with the nerdy side to him, who is the love interest and hottie you don’t expect from his first appearance in the books, which is very grumpy.  It was worth a read for someone who wants a new romantic fantasy to read.

Love at First Sip (The Coffee Loft #1) (Amy Stephens): It was a short story with not much of a plot about a small-town coffee shop owner and her former high school sweetheart. It had a cat that was in a funny scene and funny characters as the employees of the coffee who I would like to know more about if the book wasn’t so short. It was a good story to read if you want a non-complicated one with a happy ending.

The Midnight Prince (Once Upon A Prince #5) (Angie Grigaliunas): I loved this book so much that I finished it in one day. I loved the characters and the magic elements of the story. I loved the Cinderella retelling of it as it had the magic of the fairy godmother in the friend of Allia, but I also liked the mystery and the plot twists of the story that helped me not want to stop. I loved the fae magic, especially as it gave of the world building and to the story. It was a very enjoyable read.

The Naughty Donkey (Agatha Christie): I liked this retelling of a bible story with the donkey that had a character and then helped Jesus Christ. It has meaning to help people to see religion from a different point of view. It is a point that people that you don’t get with a Christie story.

My Post-modern Persephone: 

“Queen of the underworld, Goddess of the dead, the underworld, grain, and nature” = an overgrown partial zombie, from her undead corpse springtime flowers bloom. 

(irl references: Madam Bridgette from Limbo comic, sugar skull face-paintings of Día de Muertos, Lisa Țepeș from Castlevania, Hel in Norse mythology.) 

The groundskeeper of surrounding graveyards, tends to the wildlife and flora - keeps the plants tidy and blooming. she is the only one to leave flowers on the graves of those killed by mobsters, she’s not in any danger - and people who try to attack her will have to deal with her husband first. symbols: pomegranate, flowers, torches (a flashlight: always the one to check on strange bumps in the night). 

The shepherd of the graveyards - tends to disappearing graves to try and keep them in some way, once the headstones are gone she plants a tree in their place. she find the wandering dead (zombies, ghosts, souls, servants/demons of the underworld) and intimidates them all to go back to the underworld= gets her name ‘Dread Persephone’. leaves mushrooms wherever she goes, a part of herself is within the mushrooms so she can sense what’s going on around them - uses this to keep an eye on her mother during the winters . 

TRUTH - her facial scar was caused as she was being kidnapped by Hades, Hades helped to heal it as best he could but she needs healing from anywhere other than the underworld - flowers and mushrooms grew from her flesh as she became skeletal, she wears a decorative skull mask when surfacing into the world of the living. She’s forced to wait, while in the underworld she sees just how much work Hades does on his own and how it isn’t enough - ghosts, ghouls and the undead rise and haunt the living often because Hades’ back is turned while he works on the admin of sorting hundreds of dead armies. Persephone, when given the chance to go home (back to her mother, the living world, and to heal her face back to normal), Persephone stays and takes up the jobs Hades misses - Hades, seeing how good she is for him (and too scared of her to say no), allows her to share management over the dead. 

The New Age - after Zeus and Poseidon are overthrown, their thrones as Olympians were offered to Leto and Hades - Hades refused the throne as he refuses to leave the underworld, Persephone therefore took his place as his representative of the Underworld in Olympus as well as her own holy domain as a Goddess of Decay.

I HAVE FEELINGS! FOR ZOMBIE-ALIEN-HUMAN-HYBRIDS!!! I need to talk about Army of the Dead (2021) by Zack Snyder!!!

Lately I saw a lot of review-videos on YouTube about the Zack Snyder movie "Army of the Dead" (2021). It started with this Pitch Meeting video and now I have seen so many other people I never heard of talking about this movie I never watched. Because tbh I am TERRIFIED of the zombiegenre. I hate horrormovies! The only horrormovie I could ever watch on my own with a big grin was Scream 2 because it was so ridiculous. Also the Scream-guy stalked around like Otto Walkes, a german comedian. This took a lot of "scarieness" from it.

Ngl, this logic in this thing is a mess™️. I think Zack Snyder just had too many ideas and creative freedom in this. Also wtf, MATTHIAS SCHWEIGHÖFER???? WTF??? A GERMAN ACTOR? I found a comment underneath the Pitch Meeting video saying something like: "Man, you haven't even mentioned the Zombie-Fetus" and I was instantly like "BITCH, the Zombie-WHAT???" and searched for it. I even found it. This could have been the end of my mini-AOTD-phase. I found what I was looking for. I found the fetus. Fetus found. Mission accomplished. I could have just forget it and laugh about it how the zombieguy showed the dead fetus around like fucking Simba.

And then I saw something in the google-picture-recommediations that touched something inside of me. A gif that reached a spot in my deepest depths, that made me feel fuzzy and happy. A gif that was pretty much this:

This is so cute! I might cry! This touched my heart! I've been watching the damn scene the gif is from for 2 days now and I still feel so full of love for them! I was given zombies but IN LOVE!!!! ZOMBIES LOVING EACH OTHER! This scene had such an affection without them saying anything. Well... They growled a little. And tbh their growling and almost-head-rubbing had something so intimate! FFS, I felt like watching two cats greetings each other. I never saw two zombies (at least he is actually a zombie-human-alien-hybrid) showing actual love and emotion for each other. I mean maybe this isn't actually that new, IDK, I HATE ZOMBIES! BUTT!!!!! This awakend something in me and I will not stop thinking about them for at least (!!!) the next 5 minutes.

AND IT GOT BETTER!!!!

When her body was freed from her head and she screamed for him he CAME! And when he found her decapitated body he was so SAD! OUR BOY WAS DONE! And when he tried to save his baby and it died HE CRIED! ACTUAL ZOMBIETEARS!!! EMOTION! He was emotionally attached to babyfetus and his girl! HE MOURNED! MOURNING! Our boy mourned more for his baby and wifey than I did for my favourite pair of shoes when I had to throw them out. Bruh, I am still sad for him and his little fucked-up family. I would have never thought I would feel so much for zombies in love 😭

And in the end, when Lily (with zombie-queens still living head) and he were standing on the rooftop and Lily threathend to shoot zombie-queens head. COME ON!!! The looks he and his girl gave each other... I can't be the only one who thought this was very tragic and kinda sad? And when Lily threw zombie-queens head down the building and he ran for her falling head, trying to catch it in the last second and everything was slow-mo and he was unsuccessful... Bruh, that's rough, Buddy😥

FOR REAL! I don't care much about the humans in this movie but I would pay actual money to see how tf the lovestory between these 2 zombies came to be. Where are the mosterfuckers when I need them for the first time in my life??? I need fancontet! Fanfics! Fanart! Theories! Seriously, there are like 3 actual nice fanfics I could find about my zombie-otp. We need more!

her morning had started with alecto dragging ( literally ) her out of her comfortable and warm bed. the fury felt as if the demigoddess wasn't being challenged hard enough in her training. elizabeth couldn't rely completely on the abilities she inherited from hades. she has to be stronger, more agile; she needs to be a warrior worthy of fighting amongst hades' ranks. half-mortal or not; the girl needs to be prepared.

with a swipe of her stygian iron sword, she deflects the oncoming attack from the undead corpse of a former soldier. her muscles are screaming from the hours of combat but she knows she must push through. a single glance towards alecto and the spirit of odysseus; confirms this. she's quick on her feet, rendering skeletal warriors back to piles of bones, sending various empousas' back to tartarus along with a few wild hellhounds.

the sword falls from her grasp as she collapses to her knees. her breathing is heavy, sweat and blood mingling together on her pale skin. elizabeth sits there for a few minutes, trying to regain control of her breathing. if any words are spoken to her by odysseus or alecto; they've fallen on deaf ears. the only sound echoing in her mind is the sound of her blood rushing.

the sound of thunder, however, grabs her attention. she reaches to grab for her sword, fearing that zeus had found out about girl hidden in the underworld. the fear fades away when she sees persephone. her legs refuse to move, sinking into the soil as she relaxes. compared to the queen of his domain; hades' daughter looked like she just got thrown around like a rag doll. granted, she felt that way too.

"it's okay, mom. dad was pacing around the throne room like a mad man when i saw him earlier." elizabeth grabs her water bottle from one of the zombies attendants that rushed to her side. she takes a few moments to chug some down, before shrugging at the question, "i'm fine. sore, currently." the water gave her enough strength to stand up, using the hilt of her sword in order to do so. "alecto wanted to takeover my training. apparently, i'm not pushing myself as hard as they'd want me to be."

a few steps are taken towards the goddess, "i'm more concerned with who angered you, though. i'd hate to be the immortal that besmirched your good graces. from what dad says; your wrath is worse than his."

she's pissed.

thunder rolls across the up-above even as she descends to the underworld; she doesn't give the pleasantries she normally does to charon or to the recently deceased the way she had when she'd left earlier that day to attend what she'd rightly assumed would be a circus of IDIOCY on olympus. she hates going up there, putting up with the rest of their awful family - but it's easier for her to show up there than it is her husband. sometimes she thinks they must not remember who she's married to, the way they talk. like she's a second rate little girl of a goddess when she rules over a third and a half of the cosmos and is a daughter from another, lightning hot temper riding in her veins.

zeus is mad, absolutely lost within himself and his obsession over prophecies and legacies. frankly they should've seen this coming - half the gods are up in arms for or against him, while others seem to be watching this play out with a smugness that is a bit too annoying for persephone's liking. some even seem to be amused, certain he DESERVES it all.

some of her anger has subsided by the time she finally gets her feet firmly on underworld soil and she shoves and bottles the rest of it into her chest until she feels like she might explode. but she's spotted elizabeth and until she can hash this out with hades about what the hell they're going to do - well, ain't any sense worrying her. she hopes the thunder carrying on up top from persephone's temper hasn't carried on down here.

"sorry for the noise, chickadee." she decides on as greeting, pulling at the flowers in her hair and letting them fall to the ground. she does herself up nice for these 'meetings' upstairs; she'd rather be elbow deep in the soil than trussed up like some bedazzled diamond flower. "family's got me all TWISTED in knots; didn't mean to bring the storm down here, too." she smiles, expression softening. "you alright? i didn't see you this mornin' before i left."

Yes, Villagers who turn into Witches have familiars. Technically, anyone can have a familiar! Though, non-witches very likely never get to meet them..

You don't HAVE to seek out your familiar! Its like a soulmate situation! They come to you when they come. It doesn't have to be anything special, Though there are times where a familiar is passed down from their parent. But other than that, we cool!

Princess Darcy Morrigan Aoratos of the underworld was born to Queen Narcissis of Andalasia and Hades, God of the underworld, on the isle of the lost. The same year that her sister, Skia, was born and a year after her brothers, Alex and Treycor, were born. 3 years after her sister Mal was born and 4 years before her younger brothers, Hadie and Noah, were born.

She grew up knowing that it was unlikely that she'd ever leave the isle and learned to mask her pain because of that knowledge. She channeled her anger and hate and resentment into witty resorts and bowed to make the best of her life. Even if she never got to leave the isle she met Luke through Skia and Hannah when she was 3, and quickly became one of his biggest defenders.
