#Zero Option Audiobook

I love how transparent you are about what its like to be a self published author in this day and age, and i was just wondering if there was a difference on your side between amazon ebook/paperback and audible - and also if Scribd is any better, because i use it as an alternative to amazon whenever possible (and whenever the library doesnt own a copy of whatever im looking for) is it functionally all the same? What is best for you?
Thank you!
I actually did a huge long post a while back when I got the audiobooks produced and uploaded to various platforms. I included Scribd in the breakdown after people falsely claim that Scrib is better for authors than Amazon/Libraries.
A lot of people were not happy when I burst that particular bubble by showing that Scribd paid me 97 cents out of the 19.99 price tag. Which is less than what Audible paid me.
Now, obviously, Scribd is different because it's a subscription service, and you’re paying for access to multiple things with that subscription. But saying it is better than libraries is just false because I also showed the numbers for that, and my income from libraries was several times higher than both Scribd and Amazon combined (for audio), which is why authors are always begging people to request their work in libraries.
Libraries pay us better and are usually free. Not always. I know it depends heavily on the country, but for most of my English-speaking audience, that is the case.
Now, this is not to say people shouldn’t use services like Scribd. If Scribd is what you can afford and it gives you access to things your library can’t fantastic. Please continue to access our work through that legal option. I would much rather earn 97 cents than zero.
But uh, yeah, Amazon pays me more than Scrib for digital stuff and I really don’t like when people who aren’t on the author side spread misinformation and frame it as some more “gotcha.”
The sad truth is Most retailers pay us the same or within the same royalty range. The difference I earn between Kobo vs Kindle is literal pennies with Amazon coming out on top. I make my work available on multiple platforms to give people options, but unless you’re buying directly from my personal storefront, it's all roughly the same.
I do actually earn more from Amazon paperbacks than I do any other retailers (for self-pub, paperbacks are a flat rate regardless of how much a retailer is charging), but the difference is about ten cents, so I always tell people to buy from wherever is best for them.
I like bookshop.org because they give some of the profit on their end to indie bookstores. Same with libro.fm for audio.
Audiobooks are just a whole fucking nightmare. Audible sets your price point for you and takes 80% of your royalties. And because Audible does that, I have to then use that price tag on all other platforms or risk being fucked by the algorithm gods. Other audio retailers take about 60-70% in royalties, most of them veering toward 70%.
As we say in radical acceptance therapy, it is what it is—fucking end-stage monopoly driven capitalism.
Now, speaking personally, when it comes to digital media, I earn the most royalties from my Payhip store where I keep 90% of my income.
That's the best place for me.
It's also why it's worth looking up an author you like to see if they have their own storefront. It doesn't help our sales rankings or put us on any bestseller lists, but frankly after launch week, who cares. I’ll take being able to feed me and my dog.
I hope that helps!

Hello, I've been looking through all the links in your pinned post, but just to be sure, is it okay if I ask a few questions regarding on 2 of my prominent characters?
1) One of my characters' eyesight had been degrading since they were young, and though they now take special antiobiotics and treatment to prevent further loss of vision, they're only able to perceive shadows, light, and colors (which largely depends on contrast and lighting of the surroundings). Their cane is their main mobility aid in day-to-day life, but when in combat, they use a device similar to the Focus from Horizon: Zero Dawn. Moving targets like enemies or allies are highlighted/outlined with bright colors to indicate where they are, the colors symbolizing who they are. The device is also capable of scanning text or objects and transcribing them in audio form through an earpiece. I've done my best to research how my character's device can be useful for their lifestyle, but not negate or make their blindness an easily bypassed part of their life, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
2) One of my characters has partial blindess caused by a serious injury to the left side of their face. Their injured eye can only perceive some light and shadow, which affects their depth perception quite a bit. Relying on only one eye has caused strain on their uninjured eye, so they have nearsightedness and need glasses to prevent further damage. This character felt more comfortable to write for me because I'm also nearsighted, although to a lesser degree than my character, and my glasses are mostly to protect my eyes from worsening. So far, I've used my own habits and experiences to describe my character's, but since they are partially blind (which they compensate for by memorizing or mapping out their surroundings, training and practice to determine actual distance, and guides (family and close friends)), my own experiences are hardly enough to make my character seem more realistic. I'd like to ask if there are any mistakes I've made with writing them?
For the first one, I suggest adapting already-existing technology, such as the OrCam MyEye or the Sunu Band. OrCam is worn on glasses and is a device that can already detect surroundings and read text. It can also tell you when someone you know is approaching, such as a neighbor whose face the device recognizes. I don’t know how accurate it is, but I find it helpful to acknowledge that some of these gadgets already exist for realism and accuracy. They are not made up devices that might hypothetically help blind people; they are real and usually invented by people in the blind community themselves.
You can explain that you modeled it after the OrCam or it could be a specialized version of it that includes other features. Color coded enemies and teammates also seems plausible considering OrCam’s recognition feature.
Here is a video demonstrating the OrCam My Eye Pro. You can also go to their website here or look them up on YouTube for more videos.
Please note that some of the features can be found elsewhere or replaced with techniques. For example, someone who folds or organizes their money a certain way or uses a money reader probably wouldn’t need the money identification part of the product. Certain people will like certain features more than others, which could also provide characterization.
While this product is not an option for everyone due to the price, it may be accessible in the scenario you described.
You can also avoid negating their blindness by showing how it impacts them in other ways. A few examples may include navigation techniques, lighting preferences, home layout, assistive devices used at home, how they choose to read (audiobooks, trying to find Braille books they like that are actually available), eye strain, sensory issues, stimulation seeking, interactions with the blind community, sports and activities, etc.
Glasses for protection and the other stuff you outlined sounds good to me.
I love that they use a cane during the day, but what about orientation and navigating uneven ground? I ask because the technology you plan to use during combat scenes wouldn’t help with locating uneven ground or steps.
Could they use the cane for navigating in combat?
While on the subject, a Sunu band might also be helpful. It detects objects at and above waist level. However, it is not a replacement for a cane.
As for your second character, eye strain and fatigue are absolutely going to happen as you described. Your character might sometimes cover their injured eye to reduce strain. They may also need more frequent breaks from use of their uninjured eye, such as when reading or doing desk work.
Taking breaks from screens helps. Managing lighting also helps, such as having enough light to avoid strain, although nothing too harsh. For migraines or eye pain, they might carry medication. At home, they can use hot or cold compresses in addition to eye masks to rest their eyes.
So far, what you have described sounds good. Your own experience should be useful in writing this character. However, I also suggest considering how they navigate stairs and uneven ground when walking. Another common obstacle that arises for people with no depth perception is accidentally dropping cups. To circumvent this, it is helpful to use high contrast, avoid glass, and/or intentionally set the cup on the counter before releasing it.
Lastly, I wanted to add that people with partial vision will often be expected or pressured to rely on it. This character might need to self-advocate, as they could still benefit from audio descriptions, screen-readers, and other assistive technology.
If anyone else has ideas, feel free to share in the notes.
Hope this helps.

It was gluccomannon powder, pistachio syrup & monkfruit. No sugar cherry pie filling and zero cool whip on top.
It was fun to eat at least.

If "it's queer!" Is the only way someone can reccomend it to me, chances are it doesn't have any other redeeming qualities
OR
the person doing the reccomending is straight up lying about the queer content and is instead caught up in Fandom Shipping which has no basis on the actual original media and have convinced themselves their headcanons are in fact, part of the original text.
The latter option has happened so many fucking times that I've given up.
"its amazing trans and nonbinary representation!!!!"
The entire novel series has exactly 2 trans characters who exist for a handful of sentences before getting shoved off screen. Gender and pronouns are based entirely on physical sex characteristics, gender is only what you're assigned at birth. Nonbinary people have been reduced to An Official Third Gender. The main character uses it/its pronouns because its a robot and also literally all of the books are in First Person Perspective so its pronouns aren't even being used 99% of the time, unless other people are talking about it, to the point that people insist its 'Actually A He' or 'Actually A She' based on their own biases as readers, or based entirely on the audiobook narrator having a deep voice,
because as we know, the gender of a character is entirely based on who is narrating the audiobook version! 🙄 (Sarcasm)
"it has so much ace representation!!!!!"
The "ace" characters in question is a side/background character who just so happened to never have an on-screen romance while in the background and the creators proclaimed they were ace on Twitter after the show had already ended.
"Its got so much gay representation!!!!"
The main fandom ship is two male characters who barely interact in the text and literally don't have any romantic or sexual subtext, they just happen to be white and conventionally attractive or edgy.
"Its got so much trans and lesbian representation!!!!"
The "trans" main character had no choice or control over turning into a woman (or, more specifically , a biologically female body) after being a man (biological male) for multiple lifetimes, nor do they show any particular enthusiasm/euphoria at being a woman, and often are thrown for a loop when referred to with she/her pronouns through out this lifetime, showing they still view themselves as male, or at least, don't identify with she/her pronouns.
The main lesbian fandom ship has zero romantic or sexual interactions in the text and they're literally only being paired up because the main character is always shipped with young female friends they travel with and the ""love interest"" was the only female friend in the group.
It was only after years of fandom campaigns and a desperate attempt to regain lost viewers that the ship became "canon" but also, still didn't go anywhere on screen, and was the epitome of clickbait.
.
Someone once genuinely recommended Supernatural to me because
"Dean and Cas have an amazing Romance, they're soooooo in love, its amazing and heartwarming".
This was back when there was only around 5 seasons of Supernatural in existence. This person was saying that from the very first season Castiel was in, that he and Dean, canonically, were in a romantic relationship. And they said this to try to get me to watch the show.
Then again, this was the same friend / group of friends who explained Supernatural as:
"these two brothers are going to be reincarnated into these Avatars of an Angel and Satan who are going to destroy the world with their battle, and all these supernatural forces are trying to make them start fighting awhile to end the world faster."
They couldn't give a straight answer when I raised the obvious question during this 'explanation' about "okay, why don't they just kill the brothers then to get them reincarnated sooner instead of trying to put them against each other while they're still human"
please elaborate in tags :)

That's fair that does sound bad, I'm sorry
I read Gideon because it's one of my friends favourite books but I think that's the only example I have. And there's not, no. I always feel like I'm wasting my time for doing certain hobbies that I love, so it's harder to take free time for someone else's hobby, so that makes sense.
I'm just so bad at watching television, I really wanted to watch it once Babs came in but I couldn't ever get through season 2, it's not even a comment on the show it's a comment on my inability to pay attention.
I am VERY glad I did!! I just finished reading hold still on Libby with my library card which is very rewarding because it was a book I'd wanted to buy AND I'm currently listening to the Graceling Audio book so it's definitely paying off. And I don't usually guess plot points due to the whole "head empty" thing. The first book I ever annotated was the Bell Jar and there's just no highlights until the very end (in which I had to physically resist the urge to highlight every single thing to do with Dr. Nolan) so I'm really not you're gal to tell you if anything was shocking. (Granted I did tell my friend I thought a character had bad vibes and I was right and she was impressed, so)
I personally think Harrow would've fucked me over if I had to listen to it. I already go in and out of paying attention to audio books and Harrow was so confusing for the first like 90% I would've been screwed. Audio books are harder for me because I *can't* do anything else- I have three hobbies, reading, writing, and drawing. I can't do two words at once so my only option if I want to listen to an audiobook is draw and especially since I just loan them from the library there's a lot of stress to draw for like 20 hours in two weeks.
I got to 12. I just keep forgetting it's there. You just like,, click too far into the next issue (page 1) and you're like... "well fuck since I've started-"
I saw that when I looked I just didn't know but fair!!!
I might try!! (I might even do a better job since I have the physical comics)
That's fair, I get that/ Hopefully you like year zero then! (when you get to it) I've never been able to complete sudoku, I know how it works I'm just stupid lmao. And that's fair, my laptop fucking sucks, I need to buy a new one before I start school again but God I don't want to pay for it who cares if this one can barely open the internet.
I imagine it was his phone but I didn't ask. He was kind of sketchy. At one point he tried to give me candy and I said I didn't trust him and then his coworker took a piece and asked if it was weed because "it wouldn't be the first time"
I am!! I just went to my local comic-con (very little comic anything- it was very disappointing. 90% of it was anime which was frustrating because we also have a yearly anime convention, but that's not why I'm telling you) I didn't notice a lot of the cosplays (due to the "oh god why am I here this is terrifying" feelings and the need to not get separated from my big brothers) but as I was leaving I DID see (or my brother pointed out to me, more accurately) a VERY good cosplay of Black Canary. I did not ask for a picture because we were leaving and I am shy but I have been thinking about it since lmao. She alone made me want to just like draw Black Canary for the rest of my life.
ok sorry for the delay in response life’s been busy and when i’m not busy w work i’ve been consumed by a rewatch of a silly tv show from like. eight years ago.
i will say s3 of titans (the season babs was in) definitely felt like the lowest point of the show imo. it was too doom and gloom gotham. but seeing an actual disabled person cast as babs was so cool, she was a fantastic babs she just wasn’t given a whole lot and a good chunk of it just felt like she was just there as a love interest for dick which was very frustrating to me :/
yeah i definitely think there are probably some small bits i missed with listening to the locked tomb books but a good audiobook is my favorite thing for a long drive.
i did read year zero and it was fun. loved seeing harley and ivy be gay and do crime. (and ivy beating up the joker!!)
still haven’t started injustice2 however i’ve been bouncing around reading some current dc runs (hawkgirl, powergirl, wonder woman and the amazons attack comic) and some older stuff (i read an old zatanna special because i was in a zatanna mood) i keep telling myself to read injustice2 and then getting distracted 😔
ooh a comic con that’s cool!! i’ve never been to one, i kinda would like to go to one but also they sound so overwhelming so idk if i ever will. maybe if i find someone to go with. LOVE that you saw a black canary cosplay that’s so cool i love that also you SHOULD draw black canary for the rest of your life (maybe just not. only black canary. variety is good!)
sorry that my response is a little short this time my brain is made of spaghetti tonight but i really wanted to respond bc i feel bad that this ask has been sitting in my inbox for several days. hope you are doing well!! (and hopefully i will actually start on injustice2 soon so i can share my thoughts with u!!)

100% true. House of Leaves is a very extreme example of this; it not only needs to be a book, it needs to very specifically be a printed, physical book to tell the story its trying to tell. Even as an audiobook or ebook the effect is ruined.
ARGs are a fascinating form of storytelling that haven't been explored nearly enough. I firmly believe there are things you can do with an ARG that cannot be done in any other medium. Look up the Nine Inch Nails Year Zero ARG for an example of the form at its best.
Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy started out as a radio play, and each subsequent change of medium has had to radically reinvent the story to work. There's a lot of humour in the original that just does not work in text or in video. It relies firmly on the lack of both visual depiction, and narrative description. The characters react to things that we cannot see, and those reactions paint the world. I'm absolutely certain that there exist stories that have explored this same idea for horror, doubling down on the Blair Witch idea of removing access to information as a way of creating terror.
Life is Strange is beautiful and haunting specifically because it asks you to make choices. It could easily be turned into a TV show, but the effect would be lost. It's not only the choice Max makes in chapter 4 that destroys us; it's the fact that we are forced to make it. That the game literally will not progress until we decide between one of two appalling options.
But beyond these examples that illustrate the more extreme cases, I think it could be fairly argued that it's not "some" stories that can only exist in one medium; it's every story.
Stories do get adapted, yes, and some get adapted really well. In a few cases, the adaptation may actually be the superior story. But it is not the same story. Lord of The Rings the books are not Lord of The Rings the movies. In a very literal sense the story was changed, characters' roles expanded, reduced, or outright removed, whole sections excised. But more than that, at a fundamental level it is not being told in the same way. The cadence, the metre, the rhythm of the thing is completely different. The movies are fantasy movies and they are the product of decades of media that effectively created the fantasy genre out of the seeds Tolkien planted. The books are not really "fantasy" at all, they are a saga. They are written in the traditions that Tolkien understood, and in doing so he created the traditions that we understand. A saga would make a terrible movie, because it's this vast meandering thing that's meant to take in the entire breadth of a world down to its food and its art. The songs are there because they are part of what a saga should be. They create the world. When songs are used in the movies, it's too underscore moments of pathos and drama. They serve the story. In the books the story serves the songs, because the story serves the world and the songs, are part of the world.
Every version of every story has a medium to which it is best suited. When things go right, a version and its medium meet, and get to exist together.
I firmly believe that some stories can never be translated into a different medium and that's okay

5 Sustainable Gifts for Kids & Teens
When attempting to live more sustainably, avoid plastic, or lessen your influence on the environment, gifts are always a challenge. Here are some tried-and-true eco-friendly gift suggestions for kids they will adore, whether you are the gift-giver or a parent attempting to request more eco-friendly children's gifts. Including plastic-free, minimum, zero waste, and organic presents for children and teenagers.
Fun memberships
Children will have a great excuse to leave the house when they receive memberships to zoos, science museums, and children's museums. They are also incredibly instructive and encourage students to research historical and scientific themes. It must be beneficial for everyone involved for parents to raise their children to be conscious of the environment and our impact on it. So consider giving a National Geographic Junior Membership as well. A yearly subscription will inspire children to read about the natural world and our incredible planet.
Bubble bars and bath bombs
Such fun! Swirling, bubbly colors, soft bubbles, fruity or floral scents, and water with a subtle shine. One of our go-to "consumable" and waste-free gifts is one of Lush's bright bath products, which are especially fantastic for kids and teenagers. They have a ton of original designs and scents, and I admire how they pay attention to environmental packaging as well as ingredients that are sourced in an ethical and non-cruel manner.
Wooden lego
"Eco Bricks" from Once-Kids are plastic-free hardwood and bamboo building blocks that are compatible with Lego. Since they are made of FSC-certified wood and are color-customizable, youngsters can create any colors and designs they like!
Audiobooks
An excellent digital present that produces zero trash and may provide screen-free fun along with exploration and learning. Our favorite location to purchase audiobooks is Libro. fm, which also has a great aim to help independent bookstores. They offer a great selection of books. You can give individual books or a subscription for 3, 6, or 12 months. Along with a carefully chosen collection of children's audiobooks for various interests, they have a sizable young adult selection, making this a great present for teenagers.
Eco-friendly art supplies
When you let your child's creativity run free, they may create all kinds of fantastic things, and there are many eco-friendly crafting items available. At the same time, traditional favorites like chalk and wax crayons provide safe, green gift options.
Conclusion
Ask the parent if there is something the child is saving up for and if you can obtain a gift card and contribute towards that, or if there is a special item you and some other people could buy together if you are the present giver and wish to go this route.

What Are Your Book Publishing Options? How to Zero in on the Right Publisher?
Your manuscript is almost ready, and you are looking for the best book publishing company to publish your book.
Once you start the task of finding a book publishing company, you will realize the job can be complex for a first-time author.
What are the book publishing options open before you?
Which publishing option will suit you?
Which book publishing company has the best offerings?
What is the cheapest way to publish a book?
How to publish a book yourself?
The above questions will puzzle a first-time author, as much as a maze does.
We will prise open the world of publishing for you bit by bit. We will take you through one maze in this post and reveal the book publishing options available to you.
Five options are open to you for publishing a print, eBook and/or audiobook:
You pursue only one choice of finding a reputed traditional publisher who will agree to publish your book.
Give yourself a reasonable time frame to find a suitable traditional publisher, say one year. If the right publisher has not extended a publishing offer in that time, then take a call to follow points no 3, 4 or 5.
Self-publish your book/ to publish a book yourself
Find a good self-publishing company to help you publish your book
Junk the idea of publishing a book, altogether.
If point no 1 is your choice, you need lots of patience, perseverance, and a thick skin for rejections. A good literary agent could be helpful and one must have written a book that will appeal to a publisher. If you are lucky, you will be able to find a suitable publisher in less than one year. If not, you can keep trying till you find one or give up.
If point no 2 is your choice, you have spent a reasonable amount of time and effort finding a publisher for your novel. If no publishing deal has been signed with a suitable publisher after one year etc, consider taking the next best option as mentioned in points 3,4,5. In most cases, this is the most satisfying option.
If point 3 is your choice: Time will be the most significant element required of you. You will need time to learn the various processes that go into book production and the professional way to carry out those processes. The risk is that you may still not match the experience and skill of a professional publisher and despite the immense effort, the book may turn out shoddy and unprofessional.
If point 4 is your choice: Be prepared to spend money. If you choose the right self-publishing company, you will be all set to get your book published in time and professionally too. Remember professional editing is desired for all published books. As in all types of publishing discussed, be ready to market your book.
If point no. 5 is your choice: our advice would be ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained’
Once you have familiarized yourself with the different publishing options, it is best to learn about the pros and cons of different types of publishing.
You have myriad publishing choices available. So cheers to options!
How to research for a good self-publishing company?
Self-publishing is getting a lot of exposure in the National dailies, leading to increased awareness and curiosity about the availability of alternative modes of publishing. It has caught the fancy of numerous authors who want to know how do I select the best expert publishing/self/POD company/good books company.
No one answer fits all writers. However, there are broad pointers one can look at while deciding which online good books company can work for you.
List out your most important goals. The goals you are hoping to achieve by publishing this novel. Maybe you want recognition as an author, improve standing in your professional community or open doors to various public platforms like an invitation to a panel discussion, featuring in the local or national media etc.
Determine the approx. amount of money you are willing to invest in expert publishing.
The services you most need for publishing your book.
Once you have the answers to the questions above, speak to people who have published and get their inputs on the process and the online book publishers.
Check the feedback different self-publishing companies have got. You can check this on the world wide web. This helps to measure the level of services actually being extended to writers.
Narrow down your search to 2-3 online book publishing companies that have received good feedback and meets your goal.
Then order one book which they have recently published, to check for finish and product quality.
Ask for hidden costs.
By this stage, you are all set to start correspondence with one or two book publishers near me that you have narrowed down your search to.
At this advanced stage, what pitfalls should you watch out for?
Don’t be rushed into anything. If the company calls, emails and texts you daily and uses pressure tactics to make you sign on the dotted line, they are most likely just after a quick buck and you should consider walking away.
Does the company want you to buy large quantities of your book? This is a red flag – in the age of print on demand, there is no reason for you to have lots of books lying around.
Is the company also handling inventory as part of book distribution activities?
Does the company have employees who respond to your queries promptly and with sensitivity? Book issues are often technical, and you must work with real people to resolve them. Ask questions and see how they answer.
Watch out for contracts that are vague or only protect the company should something go wrong. A good contract will protect the author’s rights.
When you are with the right self-publishing company, you will know it; trust your gut. With the right company, that feeling of comfort and confidence allows you to do your book justice.

Smart Home Products Every House Requires
A growing number of people are jumping on the smart home bandwagon, and for a good reason. Smart devices make it easier for you to run your home while saving time and money. But as the market for smart household electronics grows by the day, there is now a broader selection of devices than ever before. To cut your research time down, here are some essential smart home products you need to outfit your home. 1. Router
Router Starting with the basics, the Router and the Internet are ground zero for a smart home setup. Usually, they are already set up and provide ease in making your house a smart home yourself. First of all, the performance and speed of operation depend on the hardware capabilities of the router. The router is actually a mini-computer with a processor, RAM, network card, and firmware that controls it all. These parameters determine the cost of the device. Expensive models are more powerful. But most users choose budget options. But you should not expect miracles from a device for $10-$20. The speed will inevitably be lost during routing when traffic is transferred from the WAN port to the LAN port or Wi-Fi adapter of the device. Routers with weak processors and a small amount of RAM simply cannot cope with a large amount of data. As well, to reduce the likelihood of network security issues, such as neighbours stealing your bandwidth or an attacker breaking into your network, you will need to protect your IP address. Now, we can move into the realm of smart home products for a smarter home. Read More: 20 Essential House Cleaning Tools and Equipment With Price 2. Smart Speaker
Smart Speaker When building a smart home, you will first need a brain that you can get in the form of a smart speaker. Smart speakers come with voice assistant support that can help you control your other smart home products, from your light bulb to your favorite coffee machine. These nifty gadgets do much more than manage your smart home devices, though. You can use them for setting alarms and reminders, playing music or audiobooks, and asking questions quickly without having to scroll through Google. 3. Smart Lights
Smart LED Light Another important smart home product you should have on hand is smart lighting. The best smart light bulbs deliver the perfect illumination and easily pair with your existing smart home system. After connecting them to your network, you can start controlling them with just your voice, saving you the trouble of getting up from your couch. Most smart bulbs also come with companion apps, so even if you haven't bought a smart speaker yet, you can still control them remotely. 4. Smart Plug
Smart Plug Enjoying the convenience of a smart home doesn't mean you have to break the bank by buying expensive smart home products. A low-cost smart plug will do the trick. Smart plugs are basically plug-in outlets or power strips that come with mobile apps and can be connected to your home network. They do a decent job of transforming your existing devices like lights or fans from mindless to smart. You can also set up schedules for the devices to turn on and off at certain times, as well as monitor how much energy they consume. Plus, the best smart plugs are compatible with popular voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, so you don't have to reach for your phone all the time. Smart Thermostat When it comes to how we heat and cool our homes, smart thermostats are changing the game. Since these smart home devices are app-enabled, you can control them from any location with Wi-Fi or cellular service. That way, you can stay on top of your heating system whether you're at work, on vacation, or just hanging out at home. In certain smart thermostats, occupancy sensors are used to monitor the activities in your house. This data is then used to automatically regulate your HVAC system based on what times you're usually home and how cold you prefer the room to be. These smart devices can also notify you about issues, connect with your other smart home products, and show you how much energy your HVAC system consumes over time. 6. Smart TV
Smart TV Regular TVs, which use an HDTV antenna or cable to display content, are going the way of the dodo. In today's interconnected world, people demand something more high-tech. This is where smart TVs come into play. Unlike old-fashioned TVs, modern TVs can connect to the internet and support a wide range of apps, much like your regular smartphone. This gives you access to a whole new world of entertainment. You can now watch Netflix and YouTube videos, play games, and check social media right from your TV. 7. Smart Security Camera
Smart Security Camera There is no doubt that security cameras are a worthwhile investment. But if you want to bring your home security into the 21st century, get a smart security camera. Using your home Wi-Fi connection, smart cameras send live and recorded footage to your smartphone or cloud storage. You can then keep tabs on what's going on in your house in real time. Some models also send you alerts to notify you of any activity in the home. But beyond image capture and video recording, these smart home devices also offer extra features to help you get the most out of your surveillance system. Among these features are faced tagging, geofencing, and two-way communication. 8. Smart Video Doorbell
Smart Video Doorball A simple way to deal with porch pirates, unwanted guests, and even annoying salespeople is by installing a video doorbell, a homeowner's first line of defense. Fitted with a camera, microphone, and Wi-Fi connectivity, this smart device sends a live video stream from the front door to your phone’s doorbell app. This lets you see and talk to the person at your doorstep. The video doorbell also records and saves footage of guests who arrive while you're away. 9. Smart Smoke Detector
Smart Smoke Detector Having a smoke detector that sounds the alarm to alert you of a house fire is a good idea. But installing a smoke alarm that warns you of fire wherever you are is even better. Enter the smart smoke detector, which offers distinct benefits over its traditional counterpart. Smart smoke detectors give your home an added layer of protection by sending a signal to the cloud. The best part about this smart home technology is that it can be seamlessly integrated with your existing smart household electronics. For instance, if you’re at home when a fire does break out, your smart smoke detector pairs with your smart lighting system to safely guide you to your escape route. If you’re thinking of converting your home into a smart one with smart household electronics but aren't sure what to invest in first, these essential smart home products can jumpstart your home renovation. From someone who absolutely needs naps but is really bad at taking them, I bring you: The Cat Nap™
You want/need rest but don't want to actually sleep for whatever reason? Cat nap time. You lay down and close your eyes like you're going to try sleeping (optional: listening to a podcast or music or audiobook) but instead you lay there conscious or semi-conscious and rest for the duration. (optional: daydreaming). This is in fact significantly restful.
possible outcomes:
you unintentionally fall asleep. annoying but usually fine if you set an alarm. 7/10
you daydream or listen to something for the duration. 9/10 (best outcome)
you unintentionally fall asleep and didn't set an alarm / don't wake to your alarm. 3/10
you unintentionally fall asleep and have fucked up dreams. 1/10 (similar to interrupted nap)
you have fucked up hypnagogic hallucinations for a majority of the duration. 2/10 (not as bad as fucked up dreams for me since they're less complex and less vivid)
disclaimer: I use meds to sleep at night so I have zero data about trying to sleep the night after a cat nap
types of nap, ranked by me (an experienced napper)
the siesta: the oldest and most reliable form of nap! you go to sleep around noon. you wake up an hour or two later feeling well-rested and prepared to face the rest of the day. this is the pinnacle of nap perfection. 10/10
the businessman’s nap: you have a limited amount of time on your hands, so you schedule a nap into your packed timetable and set an alarm. you spend half the duration of the nap worrying that you’re wasting valuable nap time by lying awake, and the other half sunk into a torpor so deep that when your alarm rings, it takes you a good few minutes to remember your own name. once you’ve splashed some cold water on your face you feel much better. 7/10
EW STICKY: you were cold at first, so you piled on the blankets and wriggled into your favourite comfy sweater. this was nice. now you are awake and trapped in a horrible sweaty gordian knot of your own devising. this is not nice. when you peel off the sweater you find to your horror that you have left an actual damp patch behind on the bed, like some sort of giant dead fish that can’t stop leaking its gross fish juice everywhere. 5/10 it was at least cosy to start with
the interrupted nap: someone barges into your room and starts talking to you. “wtsfhggl?” you enquire. they give you a judgemental look, and ask why you are sleeping in the middle of the day. “ghhfshsxkls,” you reply, graciously. they tell you to get up. you get up. the rest of the day feels like an extension of whatever dream you are having before you were disturbed. you boil with quiet resentment and shame. 4/10
the unsuccessful nap: you are tired. you want to take a nap. you lie down. you wait. you wait. time moves sluggishly forwards. you wait. your brain feels like a cup of mushy porridge but your eyes refuse to close. the noise of your fan is infuriating. you wait. eventually, you are forced to accept that this nap is simply not going to happen, and you have wasted 45 minutes doing absolutely nothing. god fucking dammit. 2/10
the handy-dandy fast-forward button: you really just want this day to be over as soon as possible, and the best way you can think of to do that is to take a nap. you only meant to sleep for an hour, but when you wake up it is already evening. the day is over. you glean no satisfaction from this. you kill time until you feel justified in going back to bed again, and spend the rest of the night tossing and turning, unable to sink back into the blissful stupor from which you so recently emerged. 0/10
The Unpleasantness: when you fall asleep, it is dark. when you awaken, it is light. this is the natural order of sleep, but perverted into a form that is frightening and wrong. you feel deeply unsettled and do not know why. are you sick? what does time mean? what does anything mean? maximum despair. -1000/10.

Purchase from Amazon Purchase from Somewhere Else (tons of options, including Audible, Kobo, Smashwords, Barnes and Noble, and Apple Books) There’s no spoilers on these slides; all the information in them is basically same stuff you’d read on the back cover/product blurb.
I’m trying to earn a bit of extra money because I had some huge vet bills hit me last month, and it’s looking like my old lady cat is gonna have to be on a specialized diet for the rest of her life (she was already on one, but this new one is gonna be even more expensive). Reblogs are appreciated!
Full image descriptions can be found behind the read more cut.
Thank you to @bisexualbaker for help with the slide descriptions. Slide one: I think you should buy these books (but I am the author so take that with a grain of salt) [Images: Covers of the first four books of Tales of Inthya: The Queen of Ieflaria, Daughter of the Sun, The Queen of Rhodia, The Empress of Xytae.] Slide two: Ok so wait what is going on here? * This is a series of books that you can read with your eyeballs! * There’s also audiobooks of the first two so I guess you can also read it with your earballs! * I don’t know how anatomy works * I majored in English * We’re getting off topic * Every book in this series is a high fantasy romance centered around a f/f couple. Slide three: Book 1: The Queen of Ieflaria * Princess Esofi is engaged to marry Prince Dead Guy. * I dunno why his parents named him that? * Anyway he dies. * But it turns out this is a queernormative setting, so Esofi can just marry Prince Dead Guy’s sister! * Except Adale is all, “I can’t marry you, I’m a mess!” * And Esofi is like, “Yeah I agree, you are a mess.” * But then they both realize Adale is actually cool and smart and cares a lot about people. * Also there are dragons. [Image: Book cover of The Queen of Ieflaria] Slide four: Book 2: Daughter of the Sun * Orsina is a Lawful Good paladin on a Quest. What is her Quest? She doesn’t know. * This lack of information is slowing her down substantially. * Aelia is a minor chaos goddess who has zero worshippers and almost no magic. * Orsina vanquishes Aelia for being Evil. * Or at least for being A Huge Jerk. * But Aelia is not really vanquished and they run into each other again. But Orsina doesn’t recognize her. * They’re gonna fall in love!!! [Image: Cover of Daughter of the Sun] Slide five: Book 3: The Queen of Rhodia * Esofi’s terrible mother gets a copy of book 1 and reads it and is like, “I don’t think so!” and sails to Ieflaria to make a nuisance of herself. * She’s not homophobic or anything. We don’t do that here. * She’s just jealous because Esofi is being favored by their patron goddess. * Orsina and Aelia show up too! * It’s like a crossover. Except they were always in the same setting. But now they’re in the same room. * Also there are even more dragons. [Image: Cover of The Queen of Rhodia] Slide six: Book 4: The Empress of Xytae * Crown Princess Ioanna of Xytae is having a bad time because the national sport in her country is Being A Huge Jerk. * Meanwhile, Princess Vitaliya of Vesolda is having a bad time because her dad is getting remarried. * The princess:everyone else ratio on this planet is a little skewed. * Ioanna’s dad dies and her sister is like, “You can’t be empress if you don’t like * Being A Huge Jerk!” * And everyone clapped. * So now Ioanna has to win the support of her people and get coronated and kiss Vitaliya. [Image: Cover of The Empress of Xytae] Slide seven: Book 5: Daughter of the Moon * This book isn’t getting published until late 2020. But I can tell you a little bit about it. * Princess Netheia, Ioanna’s younger sister, has been found guilty of Being A Huge Jerk. * And exiled to Ieflaria. * She meets Klavida, whose hobbies are studying obscure magic and not wanting anything to do with Netheia. * Klavida’s disdain for Netheia’s behavior sort of makes Netheia want to become a better person. * Unfortunately she has an evil goddess screaming in her brain. [Image: A blue rectangle; text on it reads, "Sorry I do not have the cover art yet; please enjoy this delightful rectangle instead!"] Slide eight: Other miscellaneous facts * Each book is dedicated to a different cat in my life. * My naming choices are bizarre and my audiobook reader deserves an award of some sort for tolerating my nonsense. * The books are all standalones with no cliffhangers or anything but they also weave together like a beautiful tapestry or maybe a plate of spaghetti that eventually leads to a meatball or marriage. * “TWO PRINCESSES CAN’T GET MARRIED BC THEY NEED HEIRS!” The whole thing is explained in the first few pages of book 1. You don’t even need to buy it to see. It’s in the free preview. * CONCLUSION: It would be neat if you bought these books because I am poor and depressed and I’d like to be rich and depressed, ideally.
