40 Day Anime Challenge Day 13: Favorite Trope: Tsundere caretakers
You know, that person that’s like, “I’m just looking out for myself, don’t expect me to look out for you.” And then they for some reason save some pathetic child’s life, “just once” because it was too pathetic to watch, and then the kid latches on, and they’re like “dude get away from me I am not taking care of you!” but then as soon as someone tries to hurt the kid, they’re like “FIRST of all, THAT is my CHILD!” And eventually they get it through their heads- “Welp, guess I’m a parent now” ...yeah I’m a sucker for that trope. Other variants include the sibling/friend/frenemy/etc that picks on someone but only they are allowed to do so and they will gut anyone else who does so.
Tumblr media
My example here is Zazie Winters from Tegami Bachi (2009-10) When he gets paired with a younger and less experienced child for a dangerous job, he protests about the kid holding him back, only to spend the rest of the series fussing over him like “you idiot, get stronger so I don’t have to take care of you...will kill anyone who looks at you the wrong way though.”
Synopsis (From MAL): “ With his mother taken away from him and having lost everything, Lag Seeing is now a letter whose delivery has been assigned to Gauche Suede, a Letter Bee. Despite their troubling start, the two of them become friends, leading Lag to realize what his aim in life is: to deliver people's most important feelings in the form of letters, just as Gauche has done. “

Chanel serves immense hat energy at Paris Fashion Week as Gigi Hadid owns the runway
Tumblr media
The Chanel show opened with a short film starring Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt. Chanel's collection was a hit at the Paris Fashion Week show, revealing that big hats are trending. Models walked the runway for the autumn/winter 2024 collection wearing oversized floppy sun hats in black hues and pastel colors, adorned with silver hat pins. In addition to the fascinating headpiece mentioned earlier, models flaunted tartan flat caps on the runway. Additionally, flat caps are traditionally linked with British and Irish fashion. Therefore, it's exciting that the French fashion house has recently introduced them into its collections. Supermodel Gigi Hadid – a regular face on the Chanel runway – was one of the few models not wearing a hat. She wore an all-black outfit: a turtleneck and semi-sheer long skirt with a skinny belt and plenty of gold jewelry. Her ponytail featured a black bow and a white camellia, classic symbols of Chanel. The creative director, Virginie Viard, experimented with hats on the runway. The rest of the collection was business as usual. Many Chanel signatures were present, including boucle suits, cardigans with statement buttons, and quilted bags in all the rainbow colors. Layers of statement gold jewelry have long been a hallmark of the label Furthermore, it's worth noting that when Christy Turlington walked the runway for the spring/summer 1992 couture collection, wearing a black gown and plenty of gold chains, it was a memorable moment in fashion, much like Hadid's look, albeit more formal. Additionally, it's worth noting that while many of the ensembles resembled something straight out of a Chanel runway in the 1990s, some more contemporary touches caught the eye. For example, a blue cropped puffer jacket adorned with a camellia brooch, elements of denim, and a calf-length brown coat with a shearling lining and a matching hold-all were also present. Models walked on a wooden runway inspired by Deauville's boardwalk. Deauville was Viard's essential inspiration for the season. Furthermore, it's worth mentioning that she has had a long relationship with the Chanel brand since house founder Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel opened her first fashion boutique there in 1913. Furthermore, it is worth noting that seaside references inspired by the town have appeared repeatedly in the fashion industry. A notable example is Karl Lagerfeld's autumn/winter 1998 collection, where the designer drew inspiration from the city to create a stunning collection. Chanel partnered with the Deauville American Film Festival in 2019. The latest Paris Fashion Week collection showcased the bond with the film. The show opened with a short black-and-white film starring Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt. They drive in a car, order at a restaurant, and walk by the seaside with a Chanel bag. Fashion blogger @stylenotcom noted on Instagram that the short film was inspired by a scene in the 1966 French movie A Man And A Woman (Un Homme Et Une Femme). Furthermore, it's worth noting that Cruz has been associated with Chanel since 2018 as their brand ambassador since 2018. She visited Paris and attended the Fashion Week show. She showcased her impeccable style and saw the latest Chanel collection. Notably, she wore a stunning haute couture gown to the 2023 Met Gala, which left everyone in awe. She rocked a black leather-look skirt suit with a pale yellow jumper. A white statement collar added sophistication. Her fashion prowess and love for Chanel were evident. She wasn't the only star on the front row. At the show, Zoey Deutch wore a grey mini dress with a pink brooch and a new blonde hairdo. Margaret Qualley, a Chanel model, wore a yellow coat and dress set with black socks. Zazie Beetz donned a red strapless dress with an oversized black cardigan. By Prudence Wade Read the full article

hi! hope you’re well :-) as the resident ayoade film scholar, i was wondering if you had any recommendations for films similar to submarine/the double in style/theme?
hi :D i would recommend checking out some of richard's inspirations and favorites for that kind of stuff: there's his criterion picks as well as probably other lists online that he's picked out. in particular his favorite movies (he's named these as his favorites sort of interchangeably) are persona and zazie dans le metro! persona i absolutely adore and is definitely definitely essential viewing and a pretty clear thematic influence on the double, zazie (which i seem to remember liking okay but didn't totally see why he adores it) sort of shows what stylistic elements of french new wave richard enjoys.
others that richard has mentioned: ikiru, after hours, brazil (this one he said in some interview that he'd been asked about being an influence on the double but he said it wasn't specifically, however i've seen that comparison made by multiple people), the graduate (which richard apparently told craig roberts to watch before filming submarine)
other than those, here are some others (i'm sort of just spitballing here, some are directly similar and others are just vibe-based): the double life of veronique, meshes of the afternoon, mulholland drive, certified copy, winter light, harold and maude

The desert was spreading, and not in the part of the island that he expected it to be in.
He hated sand, and now it was where it wasn't supposed to be, and trapped in the carpet in his room and in his shoes and his clothes. Scratching the back of his head, he stepped back into it, and then back out.
Yeah, sure as shit, he was moving between the two worlds. Memories in-tact.
Tumblr media
"Fuck."
Last he knew, they weren't supposed to keep their memories. He'd been to the island once, returned, lived his life with no idea he'd ever left. And then, returning, he sees Zazie and Corvus, and Zazie seems to remember while Corvus forgot, but didn't belong there.
And he remembered, enough to know Corvus didn't belong there, even if she didn't.
And that's the issue. If he'd just forgotten, if it'd all gone back to whatever state he was in right before he arrived, there'd be no reason to go back willingly. Sooner or later, he'd be tossed back onto the desert planet, no memory of anything that happened here. At least, that's what he figured.
But what if, whatever was happening, was giving them a chance to go back while remembering this place? If he could go back with the information he had now - well, he couldn't prevent jack shit from having happened, but maybe he could use that to...
To...what?
Find Livio's body digging up the desert? That's what he'd thought of when he was traveling with Corvus, but he hadn't uncovered anything. And now, thinking on it...To what end?
So say he finds his body, what then? Confirm his brother's death? Could he even bring him home? No, that was too horrifying a thought.
(And besides, his own hands were too bloody to return.)
If he doesn't find his body, what then? And there was what would that imply - that he was taken by those bastards to be dissected? Or that he was alive, and still being used?
(And that his own fate would likely be sealed?)
He didn't know what he'd want to happen, and so he could only plop down, staring at the access point as it continued to grow, grain by grain.
---
(If he thought for a minute about what he wanted, if he thought he could admit it, he'd want to stay. He didn't want to return to years of lonely wandering and searching. Now searching even more, even further.)
The Punisher leaned against the wall.
---
The entire room of the housing he was assigned had been taken over by desert. It was creeping into the hallways and out the windows into the yard. It shifted and and churned and blew down the street with a vicious wind as the arid air met the cold winter breeze of the island.
It'd been hours, and he still wasn't entirely sure what to do.
There wasn't even a clear right thing to do. Sure, destroy the access point, okay, but he could do that from either side he was pretty sure.
Or, hell, he could call up someone else to destroy the damn thing, even it wasn't possible. It was still something that could be done.
Was it right to go back to his own world? Armed with his knowledge and look for his brother? Whether to give him a proper burial or to track him down?
(That, and his other goal. The other person he was tracking. Was he even there if he was here?)
("The bird that just wanted a place to sleep 'n' food to eat... and here we are.")
Pissed him off, more than anything, that the priest's words rang out in his head.
He didn't want to think about them, hell, they'd made him spiral out. He'd shot that idea in the foot, and now he was back here, spat back out from Noman's Land into the room he'd sat alone in. That he'd come back to sit alone in.
But...
---
If not for himself, then, well...
"Dead or not back home doesn't matter here. Right." The priest's words left a bad taste in his mouth, but they were true. If Livio was alive, then sooner or later he'd go back without his memories and find out. But if Livio was dead, then...
At least, at the very least, this place was a possibility. But if it was taken over, then that possibility could be lost forever. If whatever reality was through that gate became true here, then...
He didn't want to know. Couldn't risk finding out.
"Yeah, yeah, alright." Nicholas the Punisher muttered to himself, cloth and belts falling by the wayside to reveal the glowing weapon. It activated, feeling...
Lighter. It felt lighter. And he could use what he needed to.
Tumblr media
Whatever the reason, he'd been given everything back for now. He'd been so preoccupied, he didn't realize it at all. Maybe it was overkill, but he didn't really care about that right now. Maybe it was supposed to be overkill. Either way, he was sealing this thing off.
Tumblr media
And without another word, the Punisher emits a brief light, before a huge beam fires from it, blasting through the portal and through the ceiling of his room, shooting into the night and briefly lighting up the sky as the last of the sand rides off on the evening breeze.

My Week in Reviews: November 13, 2022
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Ryan Coogler, 2022)
Tumblr media
Well... they made the best out of a tragic situation.
The beginning is extremely emotional, and thankfully its heft is carried throughout the entire film, fueling the story and characters in an effective and interesting way. The world-building is great, but seems a bit too contained (to Wakanda, at least) for this point in this phase of the MCU. (Though, those who think things are getting TOO interconnected could use the same to argue the opposite... y'know, "this is exactly what the MCU needs at this point" type thing. I disagree, but not entirely.)
I, for the most part, enjoyed how they dealt with Namor. I AM worried they're trying to make him too much of a force without his earning it within the context of the MCU, though. (Especially with the Hulk and Thor comparisons Coogler's been making in the press.) That trend is my least favorite aspect of the recent new additions, every major moment we got from the original six felt entirely earned. Thankfully, all of Shuri's moments feel totally earned. Danai killed it, once again... I'll gladly take a Dora Milaje Disney+ show, right now, please. And it definitely needed more Martin Freeman... the MCU needs more of those political espionage/old-school spy movie vibes, in general. The Winter Soldier is STILL the best film in the MCU and we need more like it. I cannot wait for Secret Invasion (but I digress).
However, at the end of the day, it was STILL missing something. (Yes, definitely him. But no, I mean something else.) I can't quite put my finger on what, but it felt significant. (Again, no... not him. But yes, definitely him.) Coogler's work is great, despite that, though. And Ludwig and the entire music department slaughtered it, unsurprisingly. Fantastic work all around... he's clearly on the hunt for Oscar #2. Same with the costume and production designers. Just beautiful work all over this film, once again. - 7.5/10
Tár (Todd Field, 2022)
Tumblr media
It's rare to see direction as patient as Todd Field's is here never lose any tension or momentum throughout its film. No wonder this film so completely understands the role of a composer. Tár is a balanced, wholly effective powerhouse of a piece; an orchestra of power, control, and the struggle to maintain the former while losing the latter, and vice versa. And that's all before we even get to Cate Blanchett. She is an absolute revelation, here. Her drive, her obsession, her control over even the most minuscule aspects of this character. It's all so beautifully brought to life with cold detachment veiling unrestrained passion. What a performance. What a film. - 9.5/10
Bullet Train (David Leitch, 2022)
Tumblr media
It's a stupid, messy, silly movie. If you went in expecting anything more and left angry you didn't get it, that's your own dumb-ass fault. Not every movie needs to change or elevate its genre. It's okay to not take everything so damn seriously once in a while and enjoy a shit-show of a live-action cartoon on a train. It's fun to have fun. Points off for the unnecessary cameos. More points off for wasting Zazie Beetz. Then points added for Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry. - 7/10
Armageddon Time (James Gray, 2022)
Tumblr media
An all-around fantastic cast saves this one from it's sluggish pacing and ham-fisted handling of its themes. Hopkins is obviously the standout, but Jeremy Strong steals damn-near every scene he's in. - 7/10
Enjoy!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
