9. What historical era or fictional culture is your favorite for men's costumes?
I have a few answers to that question!
I really like the men's costumes from the Lord of the Rings movies, which is why I included fictional cultures in that question. Everything from the hobbits' jackets to the elves' robes, but especially the shirts (or mail shirts) with the long front-closing surcoats worn over trousers by the human men.
I also feel the appeal of the classic menswear of the first half of the 20th century, which kind of reached its climax in the 1930s. I actually catch myself drooling sometimes at the cut, the heft, the drape of some of those suits. It's hard to find anyone who doesn't look good in them.
Then, for a more obscure choice, I just kinda like this look, from the fifteenth century. The LOTR costumes are not a million miles off from this silhouette, actually, although without the double sleeves.
And finally, who doesn't love a well-turned-out Regency gentleman?

Huzza, Zack Pinsent has posted a new video!

Interesting point about Mr. Hallett's suit maybe being a navy blue instead of black.
#(not to be That Guy again but harpsichord music like that is a few decades off for 1785... just saying... love you anyway Zack)#(we're in the piano era by that point: listen to Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major which was written in 1785)#(I know that harpsichord piece is like the only old-timey stock music that the one website has... I'm just a stickler about this... sorry)#Zack Pinsent#18th century fashion#Youtube

He's got a cover! May I please introduce A Gentleman's Gentleman, out March 11, 2025 from Vintage Books.
You can help support my m/m trans historical romance right now, though! Please consider preordering from your bookshop of choice, adding it to your to-read list on GoodReads or Storygraph, or requesting your local library procure a copy (that's ISBN 9780593686201 in the US, 9780008716332 in the UK).
Note to UK folks: your version will be titled The Earl Meets His Match and will have a different cover (TBD).
Synopsis:
From the acclaimed author of Chef's Kiss, a groundbreaking trans Regency romance that's both delightfully witty and refreshingly iconoclastic. The notoriously eccentric Lord Christopher Eden is a “man of unusual make” and even more unusual habits: he prefers to live far from the prying eyes and ears of the ton, and would rather have the comfortable company of his childhood cook and his aged butler than the swarm of servants and hangers-on befitting a man of his station. But Christopher’s pleasant, if occasionally lonely life is upended when he receives word from his lawyers that, according to his late father’s will, he must find a wife by the end of the Season if he intends to keep his family’s fortune and the Eden estate. Christopher cannot imagine a worse fate: as he isn’t attracted to women, his chances of making a wife happy are slim. Furthermore, if his quest to marry has any hope of succeeding, he must move to London posthaste and acquire some more suitable staff. Enter James Harding, Christopher’s new, distractingly handsome—if rigidly traditional—valet. After a rocky start, the two strike up a fragile friendship amid the throes of the London Season . . . a friendship that threatens to shatter under the looming shadow of Christopher’s impending nuptials—and the secrets both men are keeping. With its heady combination of dry wit, slow-burn romance, and a nuanced portrait of trans identity, A Gentleman’s Gentleman stands to transform the historical romance genre as we know it.

where is the aziraphale as a vintage fashion influencer/tailor au à la zack pinsent and karolina żebrowska???
I know you can see the vision!!! crowley as his photographer and editor boyfriend. an excuse to wear all his historical outfits in modern times. i’m literally begging for someone to take this concept and run with it
#good omens#please aziraphale would be so nerdy about the history of fashion#hell crowley could be a fashion influencer too#their arrangement starts as them helping each other film and photograph content and slowly build a relationship#basically like mrghostrats streamer and bnf aus#or the storm chaser one where crowley helps with the camera work

I notice you really like au stories! What are some au settings you wish you could read? Do you have any writing prompts?
I have SO MANY AUs I wish existed and if they do someone needs to send it to me now. I’ve talked on my personal blog about these ideas recently:
Streamer AU sounded like a tough sell until I read @mrghostrats streamer series and realized they both love to perform and they fit the setting excellently. I would love a streamer/influencer story with Aziraphale as a historical fashion vlogger like zack pinsent or karolina żebrowska. Or some kid of pet channels with Crowley having reptiles and snakes and Aziraphale keeping birds like doves/pigeons or like the tiktokers I see with quail something cute
I always will want a Pushing Daisies AU and I think Crowley would make a perfect Ned to Aziraphale’s Chuck. Or even just taking the concept of them not being allowed to touch without one of them dying!!! and still finding ways to touch and be intimate because they love each other too much to resist!! maybe angels and demons really cannot touch each other without risk?? something to think about
and Crowley hanging out with Marlene Dietrich
I’m sure I’ll think about some more later. Who else has some AU ideas they want to see??

I'm glad I removed the tall collar. Not only does it make sense for casting, but it made room to adjust the cravat into a more formal shape that I think suits both his character and costume better.
It fills in from the side nicely, too:
I feel like Beau Brummell's valet. I've tried out a lot of different cravats, jabots and ruffles for this gentleman, trying to get an arrangement that works. He and I didn't want it to look stiff or overly foppish, or, perish the thought, phoned in. It had to be luxurious without being fussy. I personally like the mailcoach style, and thought I could do something elegant with its flowing front, but apparently it was worn by persons such as coachmen (hence its name), prizefighters and ruffians, and he informed me that he would sooner have a noose around his neck than such an infamous bit of cloth. So that was out.
I still need to tidy it up, but I think, I think, we've got there. For the construction of the latest knot I was grateful to have Zack Pinsent's video on how to tie a Regency cravat.
