Building an old Mobile Suit Gundam kit this week - the original Z'Gok!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an old kit - one of the first few HGUC kits released - and it shows. It's a small box with just a couple runners of plastic. A tiny assortment of polycaps. It feels like they had to pad-out the instructions with illustrations just to make it worth printing.
Tumblr media
The entire inner-frame is ABS, which is a little unusual. I'm used to seeing mostly PS plastic in my gunpla kits. Normally I'd be worried about the paints I used on this... But it's just the inner-frame, so I wasn't doing any painting on it.
Tumblr media
I've heard plenty of people complain that this kit is floppy, so I made sure to tighten-up the joints as I was building it. I used this DSPIAE joint-strengthening pen. I'm honestly not quite sure what's in it... It goes on a kind of milky white and dries completely clear, but it's got a tacky/sticky finish to it. And it does a fantastic job of tightening-up the joints.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I said - it's a simple build. The arms and legs are built from multiple segments connected with ball joints. There's decent articulation in the feet and wrists, but those ball joints don't offer much flexibility. The claws are articulated too, which is nice. And there's even some ab-crunch in there.
Unfortunately the mono-eye is just a sticker on some plastic. There's no dimension or detail there. And absolutely no poseability. It's just fixed wherever you put that sticker.

There aren't really any accessories. It's just the Z'Gok.

Unfortunately this kit doesn't have any kind of mounting hole or anything, so you can't really get it up on a stand. This means your posing options are a little limited. And they're also limited by the articulation in the arms and legs. You're not going to be doing anything super dynamic with this guy.
But it looks pretty damn good. It's a very simple, very solid kit. And given the price - about $10 USD - it's great for new builders or customization.
I'll be curious to see how the RG compares to this thing.

Been thinking about the concept of mobile suit racing (since I was looking at the hobby hi-zack kit) and it hit me that mobile suit racing in space would be boring af since it would just be a glorified spaceship race, but a mobile suit race on solid ground with parkour obstacles would go hard as fuck.
Think about it: Various mobile suits are built for various purposes, which changes their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to facing certain obstacles, such as walls, ramps, hurdles, mud pits, etc.
Something like a Dom would be more suited for straight line sprints over uneven terrain since it could just hover over everything, but with something like a hurdle or wall in the way (assuming said obstacle is indestructible/immovable) would stop it dead in it's tracks. Similarly, a machine like the Gundam Barbatos would be adept at agility-based challenges, being able to leap and bound over obstacles. Mobile suits with thruster packs like a zaku/gouf type machine could achieve higher jumps using their thrusters, being able to leap over cliffs or perform a slalom-like course by boosting back and forth. a Z'gok would excel in a marine environment, especially one with opportunities to go underwater.
There are a lot more possibilities that I'm not even thinking of right now, but this is something I'd love to explore further.

I like to headcanon that, after getting stuck with factory made Gundams and getting his ass kicked for it twice, Athrun became the Gundam equivalent of like, dudes who pick-up 40 year old cars and practices driving them until he has the ridiculous level of skill needed to do a perfect Akira slide and also tunes them up to the point of outrunning cop cars.
So that's how we got the Z'Gok.

Master Grade Z'Gok
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the standard mg kit of the Zeon amphibious mobile suit from Gundam. It has an original paint scheme of light grey faded into ocean grey, with thin white streamers over it all. The decals are from a revell 1/32 F14 and some of the kit supplied ones too.
Enjoy!

HG 1/144 MSM-07 Zeon Mass Production Amphibious Mobile Suit "Z'Gok"
Z'Gok done!!! This is a pretty old kit, from 1999, so to spruce it up I've added a lot of weathering, mostly dry brushing and some washes to make it look wet and covered in pondweed. If only I had some plastic plants or flocking to add,,,,
It's a really poseable kit, and quite quick to put together if you're stuck for time.

I had to copy the silly faceplant pose of course.
