my yuriful summer 2024 watchlist 🏖️☀️

now that i checked out the first episode of all the yuriful shows i was keeping an eye on, here’s my first thoughts and impressions

Mayonaka Punch

thoughts on episode 1: LOVED IT SO SO MUCH!!! i love the mc already she’s such a mess and i already love the dynamic between her and the raging vampire lesbian. my favorite from the ones on this list tbh!! need more cancelled youtubers and horny for blood lesbian vampires. also i have a weak spot for anime with adult characters who can drink alcohol and get wasted lol. WILL be watching EAGERLY.

yuri thoughts 🌸: the yuri looks solid!! there was verbal mention of lesbian romantic feelings. and as in most vampire shows, blood drinking is metaphor for sex but it’s made quite explicit in this one which increases the yuri score. the protagonists have already a v interesting dynamic im invested.

(EDIT) POST EP 3 THOUGHTS: i love this one more and more!!! still my fave out of these 5 for some reason? i just like masaki and live’s dynamic a lot, i hope they kiss

thoughts on episode 1: “shiiiika 🦌!!!” okay y’all know i love me some gag humor anime but tbqh im feeling kinda lukewarm on this one. maybe it’s bc i had rly high expectations for this but idk most of the gags did not hit as nice as i hoped. tho some of them were brilliant (also looove the constant breaking of the fourth wall). not looking forward to the siscon character that’s gonna be introduced. will be continuing but might drop if i get bored. however i loved how they Did mention that only male deer have horns sooo… noko transbian 🦌🏳️‍⚧️?

yuri thoughts 🌸: the two protagonists have great yuri potential!! torako has already shown she’s a huge girl kisser and noko just keeps teasing her, which is a great dynamic imo. also torako’s va is hatsune miku’s voice provider, and we all know hatsune miku is transbian goddess so!

(EDIT) POST EP 3 THOUGHTS: okay nvm i actually love this!!!!!! and the siscon character is such a caricature and parody of the siscon trope that i love her too (also she’s voiced by mafuyu project sekai uwu).

thoughts on episode 1: once again maybe unpopular opinion but im not completely sold on this one. yes it’s fun, yes she’s unhinged, yes they’re all absolutely raging homosexuals BUT idk how to explain it but it feels very much male oriented. idk i think i feel this way bc it’s my personal pet peeve when otaku shows focus mostly on men as the intended audience (for example, when they showed her audience, all the viewers were men which like. they could have shown at least one woman who likes watching her videos yknow?). so anyway. at least it’s incredibly gay? and once again, love characters gettinf drunk lol. but idk i feel like this was made to ride the wave of hololive and get men on twitter to share funny clips idk. i like how they use actual vtuber avatars in certain scenes, and i get the vibe they’ll want to make these girls real vtubers, hence why we dont see what they actually look like but just their vtuber persona. will be checking out more ep but will drop if it gets too meh.

yuri thoughts 🌸: as mentioned, all the girls are RAGING homosexuals fr. asking about favorite lesbian porn scenarios to each other to possibly act them out. hello?!

A melancholic song filled the still silence of the night as the moonlight illuminated the lonely individual. Singing an old lullaby, she held her newborn child in her arms and expressed her deep affection for her little one through the melody. She attempted to keep singing but felt her throat begin to tire, even though she did not want to take a break to drink water for every minute mattered.

The mistress hoped that her son would understand how much she loved him by the way she sang for him. She wanted him to remember her with every note of the song, even if it was only a faint memory in his heart. She loved her son with every fiber of her being and did not want him to forget it, even if her own time was running out.

Her infant remained asleep in her arms, which made her smile with happiness. The smell of the baby made her continue to shower it with love and affection, showering him with kisses and cherishing him. She already did care for him since he existed in the world and never stop giving out her love and power for him as for a dragon egg to hatch, it needs the love and power from its parents the most. If only his father was not the King of Briar Valley, they could love happily together.

Her singing came to a halt as the voice of the opening door echoed through the halls, alerting her to Malleus's presence. It was time to say goodbye, the mistress, unfortunately, had no choice in the matter. The separation of mother and child was too cruel to fathom, but Malleus did not care for her feelings. Even as she begged, he paid her no mind, because, in his eyes, she was not Yuu. The mistress knew that the cruel fate that awaited her would come to pass, and she would be separated forever from her dear son.

The mistress felt her tears falling down her cheeks, no matter how hard she tried to conceal them. She held her baby boy closer and hugged him tighter, not wanting the moment to come where she would bid him goodbye. The mistress understood that a child required the love and affection of both parents, and that she was the mother of her baby.

"It is time," she heard Malleus's warning words coming from behind her. She was too afraid to turn around or face him, for she was determined to keep her baby boy hidden and out of his sight. But deep down, she knew this wasn't possible, and that she would eventually have to come to terms with this separation and say her farewells. She knew that the moment she'd been avoiding for so long was upon her, and yet, she could not find the strength to accept it.

The mistress replied, "Please, let me just have a day more with him. He just came into this world, and he is my little child. We created him together, and I want to have that time with him."

However, in response to her plea, Malleus coldly retorted, "My heir is not yours. Yuu is the rightful mother. She is my wife, not you.” The mistress was stunned once more, realizing that she would not be able to convince Malleus otherwise. He maintained his cold glare on her. She was never deemed as his wife, Yuu was. It was true that the mistress had only given birth, but Yuu was the chosen one and her marriage with her husband was only for an heir for the fae legacy.

"Being stubborn will lead you nowhere," Malleus said angrily, as he tried to snatch the baby from her. The mistress continued her futile struggle to keep her child to herself, but felt herself failing as Malleus's grip on her arms grew tighter. It was a losing battle, and she knew that there was no other choice but to let her baby son fall into Yuu's hands.

“Then, just for a while. One minute more”

With a kiss to her son's forehead, she casted her unique spell, hoping to preserve his memory of the rhymes she had sung to him every night. For this song was one that was sung to a child from their mother, and it was something that she wanted to preserve his memory of, so he would have that part of her forever. Now that she was to be separated from her son, this song and memory would remain with him forever, always there to comfort him and remind him of her and their time together.

“I never care when you married me without love. I never care when you want to get rid of me but for this sinless child, give him all you got”

It felt like time had stopped. When that blast had happened, it felt as if a massive relief was taken. Kaylo's Pink eyes peeked open as she saw herself back in the auditorium at the Barnum Naka school. She gave a groan as lifted herself from the ground. "Ugh...is everyone ok?" She asked, rising from the ground. "Y-Yeah...I guess..." Aria replied, as she slowly sat up from where she was thrown back.

Slowly but surely, the other humans woke up and got up as well "What on earth was that?" Bruce asked, struggling to balance himself on his cane. "I...don't really know. This felt...different than the last times I used the heart." Kaylo admitted as she helped Jett to his feet. "Different? Difference how?" Trisha Jane asked. "I don't know. I mean, there was a lot going on, and I was panicking, and Yin was breaking free...and I just feel like something happened..." Kaylo said.

"Maybe you pushed Yin back, or maybe you got rid of some of his power?" Yuri suggested "Well...Either way, now he DEFINITELY knows that you have the heart. And I don't think he'll hold back this time..." Mei said. "He won't...but now he can't get to us because he's stuck in Wonderworld...or at least the space between Wonderworld." Rebecca said. "Yeah...speaking of which. Why does the auditorium look more like the Balan Theater?" Lora Jade asked.

The humans looked around. It could have just been a side effect, but the auditorium did begin to look more like the Balan Theater before it was unfortunately destroyed. "Hmm. Maybe some of the magic from Wonderworld leaked into it." Haoyu said. "Auditorium aside, we need to come up with a new plan before we can go after Yin again." Cal said. "But what can we do now?! Since Balan and Lance don't have their maestro status, Yin is essentially the maestro permanently!" Haoyu exclaimed.

"That is true...It looks like we'll just need to find another weak spot instead." Sana said "Do maestros even HAVE weak spots?" Jose asked Balan and Lance, to which they shook their heads "Well, All maestros have their weaknesses...but it wasn't known what Yin's was before he was banished." Lance said. "Oh. Great. So we don't even know if Yin has a weakness, and now he knows that I have the heart. Could the situation get any worse?" Kaylo asked.

Leo gave a slow "Guys...you better come and see this..." He said in a ominous voice. The group gave worried glances as they followed Leo to the doors of the auditorium. "What happened Leo?" Emma asked "You may wanna see for yourself..." He said. Mei gave a weary look before she peeked outside, and gave a gasp. Everyone soon followed in her example as they saw why Leo looked so worried...

I've always thought it was strange there wasn't any manga about Elisabeth giving how popular she (or at least the musical) is in Japan. Well it turns out THERE ARE. Like, many, in fact.

First we have Elisabeth by Kumi Morikawa! A single volume adaptation of the musical, published in 1996 (I think?). There seem to be two editions of it:

Then we have Tomoko Naka's two volumes-long Uruwashi no Kouhi Elisabeth, published also in 1996 (right and middle pictures). I couldn't find the plot of this series, but I suppose it's just an adaptation of Elisabeth's life. There is also a single volume edition that came out in the early 2000s (left picture):

Leaving the 90s shoujo behind, in 2017 the empress was once again depicted in a manga (a seinen this time): Cuvie's Erzsébet!

Swords?? Guns??? Yuri vibes???? Whatever this is sign me up!

In this story we follow Ida (not Ferenczy but clearly inspired in her), a Hungarian independentist infiltrated in Elisabeth's entourage to reclute her for the cause. The series ended at the beginning of 2020, closing with a total of three volumes The first chapter is available for free (in Japanese) so I might do a live reading blog of it because just the first four pages are absolutely BONKERS.

And lastly as a bonus, let's go back to the 90s with Hideko Mizuno's Elisabeth!

Now this Elisabeth isn't the Empress, but her granddaughter Archduchess Elisabeth Marie of Austria, Crown Prince Rudolf's daughter. Published between 1993 and 1996, this series covers the infamous life of the "Red Archduchess". Mizuno had years before written a manga series about Ludwig II that sadly got cancelled after only two volumes, so for her this was a comeback to a familiar era.

Now this is the sad part in which I tell you that none of these mangas has an English translation, not even fan translations. The fact that I had not even come across these until I searched "マンガ 皇妃エリザベート " shows how little diffusion these works had outside Japan, which is such a pity. Let's hope that at least a scanlation group gets interested in any of these one day!

A friend recently introduced me to Thanatos' character song from Saint Seiya Lost Canvas, asking me if Yuri listens to it (commenting it was literally the voice of Thanatos) 🥰😂
