I was reading this one shot by Ooshima Yumiko, 10月はふたつある (There are Two Octobers), and this panel cracked me up. Actually, I remember seeing such random messages in her other works (and if my memory's not playing me, in some of Takemiya's) . The poster on the wall says "My deadline is getting closer. I'm gonna die. I want to sleep." It's written in romaji, so not too obvious for a Japanese reader.

There is something cute about seeing artists dropping hints about their problems in their work. I just want to save them all. ❤️

hello! i was wondering which character your profile picture was, at first it seemed familiar but I just couldn't pin a solid answer.

Oh, this is Chibineko from Ooshima Yumiko's 70's shoujo manga classic, 綿の国星 (Wata no Kuni Hoshi) The Star of Cottonland. There's a beautiful 1984 anime movie based on it from Mushi Production which I love rewatching.

My icon in particular comes from an early promotional video / pilot, which beautifully brings to life a lot of manga illustrations. If this pilot interests you, go watch the movie and maybe read what's been translated of the manga! (@asnowperson is involved in translating that. ^^)

The Star of Cottonland is likely the first work with nekomimi (cat-eared) characters, although in the context of this story, they truly are just cats in-universe. All the human characters just see and hear cats. The human-like appearance is just how they're depicted for the viewer, as they see themselves as little people... fully-dressed , because they believe "fur is respectable clothing." ♡

It's a dreamy, whimsical, funny, but also sometimes sad and moving story from the perspective of cats.

Summary: Chibineko, who was abandoned by her previous human owner who she saw as her mother, believes she might someday turn human, as she's quite naive about how the world works... she's saved from abandonment by a depressed high schooler Tokio who failed his entrance exams and skips cram school. His parents worry he might do something drastic, but caring for the kitten changes his life for the better. Chibineko crushes on Tokio and would like to confess to him when she "becomes human" when she grows up, but learns from an older male stray cat (a very elegant white Persian cat fleeing the local crazy cat man who absolutely MUST have him for a pet) that this can never be! She learns more about being a cat.

[CW age difference; although there is no actual romantic relationships at present as Chibineko is quite young, so there's only pining and crushing. The male cat wants to be with Chibineko when she's older, but he keeps his distance and mostly dispenses some wisdom about the world, Chibineko crushes on Tokio when she believed she could someday be human, but other than that, the story really is mostly "coming of age" mixed with "life from the perspective of cats."]

most of these are based upon things we can sorta just infer about the series since hirano loooves to leave things open-ended, so some of these are moreof theories/explanations than anything if that's alright.

i put some big organized lists of hcs below the cut :)

to start i'll talk about some general fun stuff! (assuming that's what you're here for):

i always use they/them for pronouns for heinkel. mostly because there's a lot of alternation between he and she in different translations and that doesnt sound very cis to me honestly. but i rock with people who use any pronouns too.

i also see lots of ppl say theyre a lesbian and i feel like that miiight just be a byproduct of The Abridged Effect but i dont really have a label on them. they have their freak shit going on with makube so whatever that is

not a natural blonde and is very diligent about taking care of their hair. only lets their roots grow back in once they start getting older and stop giving af

gets a prosthetic arm and leg after the london attack. we know injuries inflicted before becoming a regenerator still stick around (because of anderson's scar) so walter inflicted permanent damage there.

didnt really listen to mainstream music until they started hearing it from other people like seras and makube. heard classic rock after twenty plus years of exclusively angelic choir music & opera and their brain almost exploded

their dynamics with other characters:

was raised with yumie/yumiko at the orphanage so they have a sibling bond, but they drifted a bit in their teen years/early 20s until enrico made them partners in section 13 again. it was awkward for both of them for a bit but they eventually came into their own as iscariot's dynamic duo of murderers. theyre generally pretty serious with each other but sometimes the cain instinct still kicks in

they view enrico as their boss but still fondly remembers their times together as a kid. mostly just thinks he's pathetic, but in a loving way.

anderson is a very clear father figure to them, and as iscariot's next regenerator after his death they feel like they have impossible shoes to fill; theyre very hard on themselves for that reason. the way he died definitely contributed to heinkel's self destructive habits

they had met integra through enrico before the events of hellsing and just... hated her to death. but in a funny almost homoerotic tension way. if seras was there she would have lost her mind over it and would have been overprotective to some degree

now here's some details on the time skip in general:

heinkel was rushed to the vatican (or maybe some other section 13 base) very soon after the battle of london, not a moment too late. if they were taken anywhere else they would have died of blood loss, but was given the choice to become a regenerator human like anderson for a chance to save their life. heinkel accepts because they believe walter is still out there and wants a chance at revenge. it worked and hence heinkel is now seemingly immortal/doesnt age.

side tangent is that i think becoming a Regenerator ends the aging process at whatever time you take it which explains why anderson's age is unknown and why heinkel looks the same in their supposed 40s/50s

after finding out walter had died and their battle was meaningless they were in a dark place for a long time. they were having trouble properly taking care of themselves after becoming a regenerator (i can imagine it's probably pretty weird!!). while still being a part of iscariot they were sorta benched by enrico's regent (before makube) from entering any of the organization's affairs for the next few decades. they were sort of left to rot in a way, which certainly didnt help with the grief. they considered reaching out to the hellsing organization but couldnt bring themselves to. they still somehow managed to become acquaintances with seras after the battle since they shared the same struggle and losses, but that's about it.

side tangent 2: i think seras and heinkel would genuinely become close after integra's death, but that's very far in the future

enter makube about 15-20 years into the timeskip. makube arrives in section 13 as a bishop and a new caretaker to heinkel, and is hellbent on helping them out, since theyre being "neglected" by the current archbishop, and makube regards heinkel as very important for being one of the few remaining veterans of the war in london. them forming a genuine bond would come afterwards, but that's how it started. overenthusiastic makube and tired heinkel shenanigans ensue and somehow they become tied at the hip. makube would become the archbishop quite a few years after this, and heinkel by extension sorta just becomes their de facto mission buddy.

Shōjo Corner - Candy Candy

Candy Candy is a Japanese series written by Keiko Nagita under the pen name Kyoko Mizuki. Alongside illustrator Yumiko Igarashi, it was serialized as a manga series from April of 1975 to March of 1979. The manga was featured in the popular monthly Shōjo manga magazine Nakyoshi. It was collected through 9 volumes.

The story takes place around the early 1900s, delving into the life of a girl named Candice White Ardley, who was an abandoned orphan that lived in the Pony’s Home orphanage. The story delves through the many topics of love, tragedy, family, friendship and much more. It is a bit hard to summarize the story without spoiling the major points.

The manga was adapted into a 115 episode anime series by Toei Animation and ran from October of 1976 to February of 1979.

There are a few differences between the manga and the anime, such as Candy’s age differences during specific events. Her pet raccoon as seen above in the image was solely in just the anime.

A three volume novel series was also written by Mizuki, which didn’t gain much notoriety outside of Japan.

Four short animated films were produced as well.

The manga and overall franchise had become very popular among Japanese girls, and holds a cult following to this day.

Definitely recommend it to those who are craving a good shojo classic <3

Quinton's Animation Extravaganza 849

All Hallows’ Eve 2024

I was enjoying my day with Miyako, Fluttershy and Quinton Jr. Halloween had finally arrived and it was almost time for us to throw our annual Halloween party. Before the party started, we did some last-minute testing of everything, including the projector showing classic cartoons, the music playing around the mansion, and even the outside lights. Once we were finished testing, we felt like we were ready to kick off the party. Usagi took Yumiko, Satoru and Quinton Jr. trick-or-treating while the party was going on. As for the rest of us, we put our costumes on. I was dressed as a medieval priest, while Miyako and Fluttershy were dressed as nuns. All the rest of my friends had pretty hilarious and creative costumes as well. The first guests to arrive were my old friends from Saffron City: Gordon, Susan, Bob, Mr. Hooper, David, Luis, Maria and even Buffy. All of them had pretty interesting costumes. Pretty soon, the Loud siblings arrived. As did the Pickles family and their friends. They all had very good costumes. The next thing I knew, everyone was having a blast. Some of the guests were dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, while others were watching the classic cartoons that we showed via the projector. There were lots of good food and drinks to serve the guests, including some candy for the kiddies. Our Halloween party ended up being as successful as ever and we were looking forward to throwing it again next year. For the rest of the night, my friends and I kept an eye out for the Jashinka Empire’s next Evolution Beast.

Utako to Yonde Mou Ichido (詩子とよんでもういちど, Call Me Utako Once Again) by Ooshima Yumiko.

This manga was first published in Weekly Margaret in 1970 (#16-22). It tells the story of a girl with leukemia and her young doctor, and is sad af. The final lines of the doctor are great! They made me feel like I was reading a classic Russian novel, and not a melodramatic shoujo story.

And that was the end of my youth... I knew it would come to this one day. I feared it would. Everything was over for me.

It was later included in a 1975 Sun Comics tankoubon story collection, Tanjou (誕生, Birth), and in the first volume of her 1986 Ooshima Yumiko's Selected Works Collection (大島弓子選集). I must say that the said collection looks great, and I would kill to have it.

All that is to say that this work isn't yet digitalized as far as I know, and we get to see it thanks to deadscanlations.
