Artist Talk: Yuki Kihara and Karen Jacobs

Yuki Kihara is an interdisciplinary artist of Japanese and Sāmoan descent. Through a research-based approach, her work seeks to challenge dominant and singular historical narratives and it’s persistence in the socio-political climate through a wide range of mediums, including performance, sculpture, video, photography and curatorial practice.

Paradise Camp, an exhibition by Yuki Kihara premiered to great acclaim in the New Zealand Pavilion presented at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, and will be exhibited at the Sainsbury Centre in 2025, in its first UK showing.

Yuki Kihara will be in conversation with Karen Jacobs, Associate Professor in the Sainsbury Research Unit. They will cover Paradise Camp and its ongoing development exploring the artist’s intersectional themes such as gender, museum collections, climate change and colonisation.

Aktivisme sosial-budaya dan seni dalam menyuarakan isu-isu minoritas hingga perlindungan lingkungan terus meningkatkan usaha melalui kolaborasi antarsektor dan pemanfaatan platform-platform yang beragam. Menyoroti persoalan demikian, panel kelima dari rangkaian kegiatan

Perubahan iklim (climate change) yang merupakan isu nasional bahkan global menjadi sorotan penting sebagai agenda yang harus digiatkan untuk menjaga kelangsungan alam dan manusia.

Kolaborasi antara pegiat lingkungan dan peneliti dengan musisi pada Kopernik juga tercermin pada program IKLIM yang diusung salah satunya oleh I Gede Robi Supriyanto, seorang musisi dan aktivis sekaligus Pendiri Akarumput.com. Robi mengatakan bahwa kolaborasi dan memanfaatkan beragam medium diharapkan dapat lebih menjangkau suara kepada orang-orang berpengaruh, pemerintah, hingga para jurnalis media untuk lebih mengangkat isu-isu penting, khususnya isu ekologi dan perubahan iklim, dapat menjadi prioritas isu yang digarap dan diperhatikan oleh pemilu yang akan datang

Sementara itu, Natalie King, Profesor Visual Arts dari University of Melbourne juga menyoroti bagaimana seni visual juga berkontribusi pada pengenalan sejarah hingga menyuarakan suara orang-orang termarjinalkan. Salah satunya melalui projek “Paradise Camp by Yuki Kihara” yang merepresentasikan kelompok minoritas yakni Fa’afine di Samoa dan ditampilkan lewat pameran Venice Biennale 2022. Menurut Natalie, creative artist memiliki peran penting terkait imajinasinya dalam menyampaikan isu-isu penting, khususnya pada merepresentasikan suara kelompok minoritas atau yang termarjinalisasikan di masa lalu maupun masa depan. Dari diskusi yang dibawakan oleh para ahli dan pegiat lingkungan hingga sejarah tersebut dapat ditemukan bahwa isu perubahan baik lingkungan, Hak Asasi Manusia, dan hak minoritas terus diupayakan dan dikembangkan lewat beragam langkah-langkah kreatif. Baik memanfaatkan medium seperti media sosial maupun kegiatan promosi seperti pameran seni, pameran warisan budaya, musik, festival, hingga film.

I like the angle this photo is take and the vibrancy of the colours, theres a depth to the photo which I like and really compliments the brief behind this photo.

I think that the colours and vibrancy of this photo really help to capture the motion of the ball.

I like the depth of focus in this photo that encapsulates the motion of her going to kick the soccer ball.

FA8801 supervision review 1: Henry Symonds and George Funaki 07/03

My initial supervision with Henry was interesting, my expectations of a queen with slews of sass was verified and I'm quite glad we're working together. The discussion was open and frank, in a general sense - our aim is to produce a project that is of honours quality which incapsulates my theoretical framework pertaining queer-Pasifika, specifically leiti, within a Tamaki Makaurau diaspora.

We discussed ways of working to produce something tangible to showcase for the April seminars - I suggested an objects based approach since my background pertains design and construction. Henry suggested we find some mean to my making before that and was interested in examples of my previous work in fashion. Henrys feedback was concise, "You have the style, the vision, and your concept is present. But there isn't a lot that you're saying. I think that is what we need to establish".

My practice is collaborative by nature and it is often difficult to establish a singular voice because of that - I had interests in exploring primary ways of making when I jumped on board for the honours programme. Because of my skills, I felt that there was a need, or want, to create independently, to cultivate a focused out view from the collective, and to stray from the confines of working collectively.

Henry suggested that there are ways of incorporating that interest of independent making without jeopardising my experience in collective dialogue, which is a scope, in retrospect, that I do want to maintain to a certain degree. We spoke about queer-Pacific artists who practice within the diaspora with similar out views of the framework I intend to build - such as Yuki Kihara.

Henry's passing mention of her piqued an interest in me to sift through the queer-Pacific artists upcoming in Wellington and Tamaki. I have always been familiar with Yuki's work - but never to the extent of actively engaging with it. I can identify similarities between our process with her method of making, particularly her way of navigating self image concurrently advocating for fa'afafine, because her practice aims to disrupt norms of sexuality and gender within spaces that conform to traditional binaries i.e. the brown diaspora of Aotearoa.

Her work tends to encompass Pacific worldviews, how those worldviews inform her self-image, and how sexuality can be woven into traditional spaces. I intend to source Yuki's process to help form my theoretical framework that encompass the worldviews of a leiti (like a lady), the Tongan equivalent of fa'afafine (in the manner of a woman).

Powerhouse Museum Visit - 'Paradise Camp' by Yuki Kihara

"Kihara’s performative photography upcycles select paintings by post-impressionist French artist Paul Gauguin created during his time in the Islands of Tahiti and the Marquesas between 1891 and 1903. Kihara problematises Gauguin’s outsized legacy by re-enacting his paintings back in the Pacific, paying careful attention to the details of his works. These re-enactments instill a Polynesian inflection to each photograph and are based on strong personal relationships with Kihara’s sitters, all of whom are part of the Fa‘afafine and Fa‘atama communities. Kihara works with these models to represent her own vision of paradise, redirecting the viewer to the concerns of contemporary Pacific Islanders and ‘returning the gaze’ in a profound gesture of empowerment."

Yuki has been inspired by the past and many of her photos are represented a very cultural and heritage way. Her work done for the MET was a representation of that. I think her work shows who she is and her reflecting on that in photography is inspiring.
