Finished Unchained Love and I gotta ask. WHAT THE FRICKETY FRACK WAS THAT ENDING??? I have so many questions. Spoilers below.
Tumblr media
The questions off the top my head are- 1. Did Bu Yin Lou and Xiao Duo just run off into the sunset? No problems in their escape?
2. Did the emperor die? Or was he deposed? When he fell, I hope he had a heart attack.
4. What happened to the rest of the Zhaoding Bureau? Did they escape properly?
5. Was Yu Zun’s lie discovered? I mean, what are they gonna do if the Emperor demands to see the body?
6. Did He De take over the country? Or does Murong Gao Gong continue with his mad tyranny?
7. Was Empress Dowager released?
8. What was the point of Cao Chun Ang's fake death scene? So bizarre.
There were some good bits, though. 1. Peter Ho's high pitched voice in the last few episodes was so chilling. Excellent acting.
2. I loved the scene where Bu Yin Lou slaps Murong Gao Gong and tells him what's what.
3. The action scene where Xiao Duo fights the soldiers send by Bu Yu Lu. Beautiful!
4. The entire attempted coup. Fantastically done.
5. Solid start. I really loved the beginning of the story.
6. The scene where Murong Gao Gong makes Bu Yin Lou stab her cousin. It was visceral. (What was the point of him living through that, though? The guy was never mentioned again).
7. I loved that Eunuch Sun got his just desserts. He was such an enabler.
This series left me with such mixed feelings, though. When I saw the start, I was excited and hoped for a matured, forbidden love story in a cut-throat political world. This series had it ALL! Great set up, good actors, decent production quality, and a very strong start. The problems started with the way the leads fall in love. It just... happened.
And I get it. Sometimes, that's how it is. But not once did I feel like the foundation of their love was strong enough to go against practically the entire imperial power. Some of the choices the script writers made were actually lazy. Like Rong An's plot. She could have been a formidable villain, but she was cast aside for half the show. The issues with censorship didn't help the show either.
That said, credit where credit is due, the characters were done well. They are well rounded characters, each having shades. I also liked that the female lead was shown to be someone unabashed for being who she is. It's a refreshing change. The performances were solid too.
Overall, I will give this somewhere between 6.5-7 stars out of 10. I cannot in good faith give it a full 7.

Ipoh 27-29 Dec 23
After we visited Sun Yat Sen Museum, we met Biow Huei and Ah Hwa for lunch. The original plan was for Grace and I to take a bus on the 26th to KL, put up a night at Uncle Beck Sian's, then take the train with Biow Ming, Xi Yu, Zhen Yu and Rong Yu to Ipoh to meet Biow Huei. Instead, because of the turn of events, we met Biow Huei and Ah Hwa for lunch, then visited her apartment, which was cosy and neat, then drove south to Ipoh together, sans Ah Hwa.
Biow Ming reached Ipoh before us. The apartment was situated in the heart of old Ipoh town, but we had to climb a steep flight of stairs to get to it. Definitely not for the old! However, it was cosy and comfortable and there was a washing machine, which was really great, because we could do our laundry.
We rested and walked to the famous Tuck Kee restaurant for dinner. Its signature dish was the stir-fried hor fun with two raw eggs on top of it. You stir it to give it that additional gleam and silky texture. Yummy!!
The next day we had caramel pudding and Wu Yi Cha (武夷茶)at Thean Chun coffee shop, together with fried kuey teow, porridge and hor fun. Wu Yi Cha is something only the locals know about, according to Biow Ming, who's born in Ipoh. So we got a taste of it, which is a hard-boiled egg soaked in a special sweet tea. Unique and delectable!
Then we went walking around and bought some tea. Biow Ming and Biow Huei bought additional Chinese herbs when we found the shop that sold 武夷 herbs.
At night we headed to Lou Wong Restaurant for its famous chicken rice. To be honest, it was a bit of a curate’s egg. The chicken was a bit tough for me but the sauce that accompanied it was really delicious. It was a long queue, just like it was at Tuck Kee, but once we sat down, the food was served very quickly.
On the 29th, after breakfast (prawn noodles and hor fun), the kids followed Leslie in his car to the train station while the rest of us walked there. Then Leslie drove all the way alone to KL Sentral to pick Grace and me up. It was jammed half the way so it took him four hours plus to reach us. He was really wonderful. On the other hand, Biow Ming, the kids and I had a relaxing train ride. Biow Huei also took the train back to Penang.
Leslie, Grace and I finally reached home at about 8pm. It was a long trip but a memorable one!

“I didn’t know if he was dead or alive until that day when the palanquin passed by him and I saw him personally. Only then I understood—people who love each other might not get to be together. As long as he was safe, it was the greatest ending I could have.” —Song of Youth (2021)

玉楼春 SONG OF YOUTH (2021)
I, Lin Shao Chun, am an orphan. I have nothing but bare walls in my home and I am an insignificant entertainer in the Multitudinous Theatrical Troupe. I have nothing. I, Sun Yu Lou, have two living parents. My family is rich and I am the son of the current Grand Secretariat. I don’t lack anything. If we get together, everything will be complete.

Nirvana in Fire Character Reference Sheet Roughly in the Order Those Characters Are Introduced
For @howdydowdy, as promised, and for anyone else who, like me, is terrible at names and needs some kind of “Who?? Ohhh right. That guy.” reminder.
Basically, my Nirvana in Fire Journey started with me watching half the first episode, being wildly confused, realizing I was in over my head re: names and thus deciding to go back to the beginning and watch it again But Taking Notes This Time. I watched the whole show with a notebook and pen at my side. I figured I may as well spare you all the labour by typing it up.
As more information was revealed, I often added it to a character’s initial note, but by and large I’m leaving those extra notes out so you can experience the joy and confusion and anguish of New Information yourself. The exception to this is generally a person’s name, title, and position. E.g. Duke Qing’s name, Bai Ye, isn’t mentioned until a number of episodes after he’s first mentioned, if I recall correctly, but knowing that the person named “Bai Ye” is the same person called “Duke Qing” is exactly why I took these notes for myself in the first place.
Basically this isn’t intended to be a character guide that lays out exactly who a person is, their relationships to the other characters, and their place in the story, but rather something you can look at whenever someone mentions a name that jogs your memory just enough for you to be able to place to person. Which is why the notes tend to be either the context in which the person was introduced or the relationship through which they’re introduced.
Some names and notes are inherently spoilers, but hopefully by virtue of the fact that this is broadly in the order a character is first mentioned/introduced, you can avoid spoilers simply by not scrolling down too far. For those persons where their name or an alter ego comes in significantly after their initial introduction and is a spoiler, they are listed a second time starting with the “new information” and with the note in italics indicating their original entry (there aren’t a lot of these, don’t worry).
I will readily admit that some of my handwritten notes are just a name and then a blank space because apparently I just never actually added a note for them. I haven’t bothered adding those people here. Yes it’s because I’ve forgotten entirely who they are, but I’m pretty sure that means you’ll be okay if you immediately forget who they are too. (That being said, I get the sense there are actually relevant people missing from this list. As the show carried on and introductions became less frequent, remembering them became less difficult.)
The List
Lin Xie –> Commander of the Chiyan Army
Lin Shu –> “Xiao-Shu” –> Lin Xie’s son –> Mei Changsu --> Chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance --> Su Zhe
Lin Chen –> Young Master of Langya Hall –> NOTE: The “Lin” of Lin Chen and the “Lin” of Lin Xie & Lin Shu are both written and pronounced differently. These people are not related.
Northern Yan’s 6th Prince –> Now Northern Yan’s Crown Prince
Minister Xu –> Da Liang’s envoy to Northern Yan
Prince Yu –> Xiao Jinghuan –> 5th Prince of Da Liang
Xiao Xuan –> Emperor of Da Liang
Empress Yan --> Prince Yu’s adoptive mother
Consort Yue --> Crown Prince’s mother
Grand Empress (Dowager) --> Emperor’s grandmother
Xiao Jingxuan --> Crown Prince of Da Liang --> metonym is “Eastern Palace”
Zhuo Dingfeng --> Master of Tianquan Manor
Zhuo Qingyao --> Eldest son of Zhuo Dingfeng --> guy on the horse and later the guy helping the old couple on the boat and later also the guy who calls Xie Yu “father-in-law” (I am telling you this specifically because I am not bad at faces but this guy added so much confusion to my life that was cleared up the moment I realized these people were the same person. And also because my mother is terrible at faces and for like 15 episodes every time he showed up in another random place I would say “that’s horse and boat guy” and she would say “wait what? really???” So I’m assuming at least one other person will share in this struggle)
Xie Yu --> Marquis of Ning
Qin Banruo --> Prince Yu’s strategist
Duke Qing --> Prime Minister --> Bai Ye
