Started a new read last night. It’s a YA werewolf dated mates novel- very similar to my work in progress. They say you should read books in the genre you want to publish. I’m already loving this book by Ava King called Fated by the Moon.

QUESTION!!!!
do you like classic books in general or just the great gatsby?
I DO LOVE CLASSIC BOOKS!!!! i love literature in general tbh but i think i prefer older books over new ones. sometimes new ones can be good but its easier to access older literature (public domain :)) and it just tends to be more... outlandish sometimes? but in a way that presents complex themes (human nature.. sometimes politics but ehh) while still serving as a bit of escapism.
FOR EXAMPLE!! mayor of casterbridge. wild read. a guy sells his wife, wife + daughter comes back after like a decade, a new guy walks into town, wife dies, daughter falls in love with new guy, aunt figure falls in love with new guy, aunt figure also loved the main guy, fun all around while being something that forces you to actively engage (written in like the 19th century so the diction is painful honestly) while presenting stuff like free will loyalty morals etc
animal farm was great, i read that after the school unit on 1984, 100% sure thats more popular than casterbridge so. enough said there
lord of the flies!! my first fandom i hold it very near and dear to my heart. british boys gone wild
i do think gatsby broke me a little bit. just a little. im going back rn to read more into it but AUGH im built like a moth i love flowery language/mildly poetic sentiments (????) and descriptions of light and tragedy while real life themes (american dream and the perception of love in general i think?) are brewing underneath
i need to read stuff from oscar wilde. sorry this turned into a long rant/recommendation list aojfisoifojiij BUT WBU WHAT BOOKS DO YOU LIKE
#before classic lit was young adult dystopian novels#monkey see monkey do or something#hunger gamessssss my beloveddddd#also graphic novels#the really thick ones that adapt a novel or are really slow paced#i own a THICK copy of it#got into like 40 pages#i should go back to that

Forgive me if I brought up something that you may have buried underneath your brain but... does anyone remember the book Save The Pearls by Victoria Foyt? The YA dystopian novel with blackface as its marketing ploy?
What if it was titled Save The Emeralds and instead of weird, albeit racist furries you just had really genocidal, lesbian ones with an preference of consensual relationships instead? Would that make me an bestseller?
No? That's okay. I literally just stole the title and put emeralds at the end instead. But its is just an thought. Quite an obscure thought, to say the least.

BOOK REVIEW: UGLIES: SHAY'S STORY BY SCOTT WESTERFELD AND DEVIN GRAYSON, ILLUSTRATED BY STEVEN CUMMINGS
⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was my first time reading a graphic novel, and I loved it. It is an additional story in the Uglies universe, letting readers in on Shay’s life before, during, and after Tally during the timeline of the first Uglies novel.
Everything we learn about Shay adds so much to her character. I’ve read three Uglies novels so far, but knowing more about her relationship with David before Tally appeared and Shay’s thoughts on events we’ve only seen from Tally’s POV creates a well-rounded picture of the universe. With the movie coming out soon, I hope we get to see some of Shay’s thoughts incorporated into the narrative.
I also think, maybe unintentionally, we get more depth to David’s character. It certainly paints him in a different light at times than the original series does, which was fun to read.
I love the artwork. This one is in black and white, and the cover page for each chapter is like a little map of what’s happening. I honestly don’t know how the illustrator captured such contrast in the nighttime scenes, but it is pretty and visually appealing, at least to a newbie like me.

💜BOOK REVIEW💜
The Declaration By Gemma Malley
Finished Reading October 2023
Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite Quote: page 58 ‘make it think you love it before abusing its trust so completely that it could never trust another human being again’
Anna is a surplus, an illegal child in a dystopian future in which living forever is made possible with medication and surgery. She lives in Grange Hall, a prison/training camp where illegal children are held and trained to be slaves for the wealthy legals who have been living on decades past what they should have.
Anna is trying her best to become a ‘valuable asset’, someone worthy of a life outside the walls of the surplus halls, someone who can pay back the debt her parents made her owe to mother nature.
When a new surplus arrives, a child the same age as Anna, he comes telling stories of Anna’s parents and of life outside the grey walls she had known all her life. Peter, the new surplus, is doing everything in his power to try help Anna realise she has a chance in the real world, with her parents, a chance where she can get out from under the evil claws of Mrs Pincent, the house matron.
Review: Gemma Malley is a brilliant writer who has created a powerful young adult science fiction novel that can be enjoyed by teenagers and adults alike. This was one of the first books I read that I loved, back when I was around eleven years of age, and returning to it as an adult not only reminded me of how truly gripping the storyline is and the world that has been created, but also how well written this story is. I will return to it again and I cannot wait to read the other two stories in this series. I can’t wait to see what is next in store for Anna and Peter.
I can definitely say that to anyone who loves YA Dystopian novels, this is one for you.

i saw a tik tok where the creator basically said that other YA dystopian stories used katniss' trauma as a way to sell the "im not like other girls" trope onto their female protaganists and its so painfully true but none of them captured the reality and truth behind what katniss represents and the message behind her character/ the other characters of the book.
just a reminder that no book/movie series will ever be on the level that the hunger games was. the hunger games was THE blueprint. it paved the way for the entire genre of teen dystopian novels/series. every other YA dystopian series wishes it was what the hunger games was. i could go into heavy detail about this. i can recite the entire movie series and the books from memory.

You’re telling me you get to the end and she dies? Over a thousand pages and she dies. I went through all that shit and she dies.
Just unlocked a repressed memory. I completely forgot how the series ended and I’m mad all over again.
You did that to me when I was a teenager and gave me trust issues in books for the rest of my life. And now as an adult I have to have random flashbacks. I remember throwing the book straight across the room.
Fuck that.
Never read another book by her and I never will.

"Divergent"-Veronica Roth
Polska wersja poniżej :]
After seeing a note about "new Hunger Games" my expectations for this novel flew very, very high. I'm gonna say this from the beginning: I AM DISAPPOINTED.
For me, note's meaning was: the next excellent book in Hunger Games style, new plot, but still dystopian. Well.
Dystopian society- yes. Interesting, catching plot- yes. Sadly, young adult or new adult books have one problem- if one thing is good, other thing is absolutely opposite.
Main loveship can be tell after their very first interaction. It's too obvious. Thing I hate the most is when extremely intelligent, brave girl loses all her advantages after meeting a boy. Author tries to highlight her strong traits and one page later cuts it off when her boyfriend shows up. It looks like Tris's brain was turning off when she was around Four. And I think it's the connection between Tris and Katniss from Hunger Games as well as the dramatic realm they're living in.
On the other hand, Veronica Roth deserves a shoutout for amazing plot twists. For me, they're the best features of the novel.
________

Arc Review: Luminous Beings by David Arnold & Jose Pimienta
Pub Date: Sept. 3, 2024 Luminous Beings was a goofy dystopian YA graphic novel. A world full of flying zombie squirrels and protection suits. It’s a dystopian world, but the teens still have the same things to worry about like family, part-time jobs and college. A group of teens spend a night on a quest as one of them avoids telling their best friend that they got into college. There was some…

Agro State by K.D. McQuain | #BookReview
The Book Review Agro State by K.D. McQuain is a unique dystopian novel focusing on the topic of agriculture. We all know the typical dystopia novel – the world has everything go wrong in some traumatic or dramatic way. This book takes that overused plotline and puts a unique spin on it. The government is now capable of feeding and taking care of everyone – socialism to the nth degree – but…

The Origins of The Rise of the Y: A Guest Blog by Angela D. Shelton
I’m very excited. This is the first time I’ve opened up the blog to a fellow author, and today I’d love to introduce you to Angela D. Shelton. Angela is an author of dystopian fiction, and while she categorizes her books as YA, I thoroughly enjoyed the tale she told in her book Collapse! On November 1, Angela will be releasing the first book in a new series, The Y Chronicles, and at this…

Suzanne Collins: I will write a YA dystopian novel that explores the depravity that humanity is capable of, digs deep into Enlightenment philosophies about the social contract and the best ways to govern people who are capable of great cruelty, shows the horrendous slaughter of children who are deemed less than human by their enemies because of a war they were barely alive for, and shows the character arc of a young man with a sense of superiority who refuses to take the risks of selfless behavior and betrays every friend who comes his way and thus descends from simple selfishness to become a ruthless authoritarian dictator.
