Have you changed any terms of vocab the clans use? Ik you mentioned changing twolegs to just humans but do you plan to change anyrhing else?
I don't like most of the canonical insults, they feel like they have no bite. "Dung" is just not a word capable of sounding harsh, it's too soft, unlike shit or crap.
I actually like coming up with insults so I probably won't use mouse/fox/whatever-dung.
Shineless = unholy, unwanted, no sense of style or decency
Foxdrop = ragged, useless, ruined, like it was chewed by a fox
Hogwash = unironically i think this is a funny word. Absurdity; you can not groom a 300 pound dangerous boar
And additionally, I don't want to change the names of ranks or groups just for the sake of not confusing anyone... but I hate the term Medicine Cat. I don't like the way they have this uncomfortably racial term in the middle of the series.
It doesn't even fit; they aren't medicine men, these cats are coded like nuns. Christian. I keep wanting to call them Clerics instead.
#But it would be a term change and I try to avoid that#Bone babble#You will also note that I used the term MEDIC for tribe healers#Soothsayer would have worked well for them though

Saw a post by @waterfire1848 talking about blood bender villainization and had a brief hyperfixation rabbit hole about their uses (came up with a whole lot less than I’d like but still some fun stuff to build off of).
I don’t know much about blood bending aside the facts it’s an easy form of bending to learn and it’s users are apparently villains so fun AUs/headcanons (I’ve only recently watched season 1 so there’s probably an inaccuracy that breaks all this but still)
1. It becomes a banned practice and used as a figurehead for anti-benders and war mongers
2. Blood benders are forced underground to keep their lives and have a mini-renaissance now that they aren’t under the years of traditions all other benders operate under, leading to advances in non-combat uses (we know bending has a ton of applications beyond “move element” people just ignore considering water tribe healing and sub-bending techniques (like metal bending) and I like to attribute that to tradition holding people back from experimenting).
3a (got side tracked and rabbit holed into theory land). So to start with this is assuming what we see as water bending healing is actually the spirit or power or whatever that powers water bending applies to bloodbending and the healing in both is actually protecting the targets body and selectively speeding up/controlling the body’s healing process since we see stuff that should scar (kataras burns on its introduction episode) not scar while Zuko can’t have his scar healed . According to google scars are caused by the stuff healing it and the scar tissue that develops, so if all the stuff in there is sped up to naturally reproduce and replace the stuff hurt and scar tissue development is slowed you get fully healed skin rather than a scar. This would make the healing super selective and reliant on the bodies natural functions though while offering some small protection against infection (which could be done by boosting immune cells production and somehow making sure they don’t mutate and become cancerous or attacking the targets own body (possibly by also boosting other parts of the immune system that counter this)). I don’t know if anyone gets tired from water healing but if anyone does then the body is being given energy from that person to support the sudden production of body stuff as well as the energy needed for movement and such from those cells (namely immune cells). If no one is getting tired then the energy comes from whatever force allows bending in the first place, likely weakening them cause conservation of energy which has long term implications for the world at large if that source doesn’t have a way to produce more power. Also worth noting the reason older stuff can’t be healed is cause scar tissue has already formed, indicating to the body to not bother fully reforming that part (though scars can fade so I bet healing could be used to make scars a lot fainter, but wouldn’t remove the scar tissue). Fun fact following this headcanon healing would be a super itchy and possibly painful process as nerve endings grow back unless they know how to dull nerves to keep them from sending those signals (which might be possible for super skilled healers but limits it’s use in battle as sudden pain or itching would be a major distraction)
3b. Bloodbending might not have as many applications as other bending techniques but I feel like healing’s an obvious one (especially since while water bending healing exists it was probably isolated to the poles and not super common even there so traditional medical practices were definitely developed elsewhere and blood bending would be an excellent skill paired with that stuff). Getting more complicated blood has 5 main parts I’ll focus on: red/white blood cells, platelets, plasma, and collagen (collagen (the stuff that makes scar tissue) isn’t actually in blood but it’s in veins and interacts with stuff in blood so I shouldn’t include it but shush).
3c. Red blood cells primarily carry oxygen throughout the body so I’ll be treating some theory’s about them as if the body’s getting more oxygen (the body makes more hemoglobin, the stuff in blood that nabs the oxygen, when the body needs more oxygen so I’m not just pulling that out of my butt). So a little more oxygen can help with focus and memory but if you add to much for to long then you start to get high but also oxygen toxicity (pressure also plays a role but that’s super variable) which causes (deep inhale) headache, irritability, anxiety, dizziness, disorientation, hyperventilation, cold shivering, fatigue, tingling, visual blurring/tunnel vision, tinnitus/hearing problems, nausea, twitching, tickling/burning sensation after breathing, coughing, coughing up blood, difficulty breathing, fever, reddening skin in some areas (namely inner nose) due to more blood, Retinopathy of prematurity in infants (causes white pupils, abnormal eye movement, crossed eyes, and nearsightedness), blindness in infants, swelling in part of eye causing blurry vision and potential vision loss, cataracts under long term exposure, chest pain, coughing, potentially fluid in lungs, and hiccups (the most dangerous symptom) (release). There are also some rarer secondary effects but I don’t understand the terms the study uses so I’ll ignore that for now, just know tons of other symptoms exist. Moving onto the effects of actual higher blood count you can get high blood pressure but there’s a lot of overlap with oxygen toxicity. Considering all of this bloodbending could be used for studying and anything needing a sharp mind but has tons of drawbacks if used to much, at high pressures, or if to high a oxygen level is achieved. When looking at other uses my first thought was the potential for using the iron in blood to mimic metal bending and eventually maybe even be able to control small amount of metal elsewhere, but doing to much research then should’ve been needed blood is about 40% red blood cell and 95% of those cells are hemoglobin (they even spit out their nucleus to carry more), which carry oxygen with iron. Now you might think that that means they’re packed with oxygen, But No! Hemoglobin only makes up about 0.34% of DRYED blood cells. Stupid science ruining my cool iron blood bender ideas.
3d. Platelets make up less than 1% of blood but clump together to form scar tissue when they touch collagen in blood vessels (which I’m including as part of blood bending cause if water bending gets magic healing I’m getting my collagen). While their make up isn’t super usable for fun stuff running off the theory that bloodbending is able to selectively reproduce cells like water bending healing blood benders could make and design their own scars to make edgy tattoos. With their control of blood bloodbenders could make these scars change shades of red/white by controlling blood flow and while painful could even scrape off scars and regrow regular skin over the old scar (zuko scars newest fashion statement. Also allows for the healing of older scars through painful scrapes but wouldn’t work for major injuries like limb loss).
3e. White blood cells are almost exclusivley useful for medical stuff so I’ma gloss over them but plasma is super useful. Blood plasma makes up 55% of blood and holds salt, minerals, and water including some waste products from cells. While I doubt benders could duplicate these things as they aren’t cells seeing as water benders can’t make more water (ooo actually I bet people who get healed suffer from dehydration as cells require water but they can’t make more out of nothing, though I guess firebenders bring that into question but if earth benders can’t make earth I’m going to say water benders can’t make water). While it might seem like the fact they can’t replicate the stuff limits their use they could extract parts of blood for resources from people semi-regularaly to make up for that since people self regulate pretty easily and their healing makes sickness less worrying so people might be willing to trade blood for healing or cash. The water in plasma could really only be useful in the desert or areas without much clean water but the salts/minerals are apparently liquified and good at conducting electricity so they could be useful for science stuff or lightning rods (especially since science is definitely gonna go crazy after a century of war time economy followed by a cultural mixing, the discovery of sub-bending, and the early/mid stages of the industrial revolution). Still might get outclassed by metal benders but I’m sure liquid conductor has its own uses and metal bending is probably pretty rare so the competition might not be to fierce.

Hello witches 🌿✨
Ayahuasca
The text of the post can be found at this link and this other link! And this link too
Also known as the tea, the vine, and la purga — is a brew made from the leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub along with the stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, though other plants and ingredients can be added as well.
This drink was used for spiritual and religious purposes by ancient Amazonian tribes and is still used as a sacred beverage by some religious communities in Brazil and North America, including the Santo Daime.
Traditionally, a shaman or curandero — an experienced healer who leads Ayahuasca ceremonies — prepares the brew by boiling torn leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub and stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine in water.
The Banisteriopsis caapi vine is cleaned and smashed before being boiled to increase the extraction of its medicinal compounds.
When the brew has reduced to the shaman’s liking, the water is removed and reserved, leaving behind the plant material. This process is repeated until a highly concentrated liquid is produced. Once cooled, the brew is strained to remove impurities.
How is Ayahuasca used?
Though Ayahuasca was traditionally used for religious and spiritual purposes by specific populations, it has become popular worldwide among those who seek a way to open their minds, heal from past traumas, or simply experience an Ayahuasca journey.
It’s strongly recommended that Ayahuasca only be taken when supervised by an experienced shaman, as those who take it need to be looked after carefully, as an Ayahuasca trip leads to an altered state of consciousness that lasts for many hours.
Before partaking in an Ayahuasca ceremony, it’s recommended that participants abstain from cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, sex, and caffeine to purify their bodies.
It’s also often suggested to follow various diets, such as vegetarianism or veganism, for 2–4 weeks prior to the experience. This is claimed to free the body of toxins.
Ayahuasca ceremony and experience
Ayahuasca ceremonies are usually held at night and last until the effects of Ayahuasca have worn off. After the space is prepared and blessed by the shaman leading the ceremony, Ayahuasca is offered to participants, sometimes split into several doses.
After consuming the Ayahuasca, most people start to feel its effects within 20–60 minutes. The effects are dose-dependent, and the trip can last 2–6 hours.
Cautions/Care/Warning
Those who take Ayahuasca can experience symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, feelings of euphoria, strong visual and auditory hallucinations, mind-altering psychedelic effects, fear, and paranoia.
It should be noted that some of the adverse effects, such as vomiting and diarrhea, are considered a normal part of the cleansing experience.
People react to Ayahuasca differently. Some experience euphoria and a feeling of enlightenment, while others go through severe anxiety and panic. It’s not uncommon for those taking Ayahuasca to experience both positive and negative effects from the brew.
The shaman and others who are experienced in Ayahuasca offer spiritual guidance to participants throughout the Ayahuasca experience and monitor participants for safety. Some retreats have medical staff on hand as well, in case of emergencies.
These ceremonies are sometimes conducted consecutively, with participants consuming Ayahuasca a few nights in a row. Every time you take Ayahuasca, it results in a different experience.

Benefits of Ayahuasca (brain health)
Many people who have taken Ayahuasca claim that the experience led to positive, long-term, life-altering changes. This may be due to the effects of Ayahuasca on the neurological system.
Recent research has shown that Ayahuasca may benefit health — particularly brain health — in a number of ways.
The main active ingredients in Ayahuasca — DMT and β-carbolines — have been shown to exhibit neuroprotective and neurorestorative qualities in some studies.
DMT activates the sigma-1 receptor (Sig-1R), a protein that blocks neurodegeneration and regulates the production of antioxidant compounds that help protect your brain cells.
Research has shown that taking Ayahuasca may increase the mindfulness capacity of your brain and improve your overall psychological well-being.
A study in 20 people indicated that consuming Ayahuasca once weekly for 4 weeks was as effective as an 8-week mindfulness program at increasing acceptance — a component of mindfulness that plays a fundamental role in psychological health .
A study in 57 people demonstrated that ratings of depression and stress were significantly decreased immediately after the participants consumed Ayahuasca. These effects were still significant 4 weeks following the Ayahuasca consumption.
Some research suggests that Ayahuasca may benefit those with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and addiction disorders.
Personal Considerations
My personal experience was extraordinary, I had a peaceful spiritual journey. My cleaning (from the inside out, with vomiting, etc.) was serene, manifested a lot in crying.
It helped me a lot with my psychological and my depression (I do medical monitoring with psychologists whenever possible, this type of treatment is really expensive here in Brazil).
There have been countless clarifications on issues in my life and things that hurt me. It changed my perception and self-love for the better.
But it is important to remember that the journey of discovery and rediscovery is far and different for each of us, so don't be in a hurry, reflect and seek healing daily, in the little things. And also seek to know the experiences and feelings of other people, to inspire and help you.
It is really great to know about the philosophy and history of Ayahuasca, but you have to be careful. Meet and trust the shamans and ceremonial guides, make sure you are safe and supported throughout your spiritual journey.
Each person will have a different reaction, so research, study, search for experiences of people who have already participated in this type of ceremony.
Although many of the unpleasant side effects that are normally experienced during a trip to Ayahuasca are considered normal and only temporary, they can be extremely distressing. Ayahuasca can interact dangerously with many medications.
The treatment of psychological disorders, such as depression, should only be offered by medical professionals, so go to your doctor regularly to carry out your usual treatments, do not replace your medications or stop using them without a prescription.
Blessed Be 🌿

Everlasting Flower: The Library 3 (end)
Everlasting Flower (masterpost, tag, AO3 series) is an AU in which Ouryuu allowed Zeno’s blood to give Kaya a kind of immortality.
→  Part 1 → Part 2 → Bonus chapter → Link to AO3
Chapter summary: After some bonding with Yoon, it's time to say goodbye to the city of books.
"At some point, I asked myself: What's the use of living forever without a purpose, if you don't give back to the world? Even if it's short term, life has a meaning. If I can heal or save someone, I'm really glad! But staying with the others is just as important.”
Yoon found Kaya at the attic they used as bedroom, sitting at the desk and humming a song. She squished and ground the leaves of a plant into the walls of a wooden mortar with the cadence of the song she sang. Yoon couldn't understand the lyrics, but the melody was similar to a folk song from the Fire Tribe he knew from childhood. He wondered if she was humming an original version in words long forgotten by even their ancestors.
He waited next to her. As a fellow herbalist, he sure didn't like to be interrupted while he was working on medicine. He wasn't going to do something as unpleasant to her.
Eventually, she put down the pestle and stretched her arms behind her head.
"Hey, Kaya?" Yoon said.
"Eeeeeeek!!"
She jumped and took the chair with her. After glancing at the source of the call, she exhaled with a grimace.
"You scared me, Yoon... How long have you been there?"
"Like five minutes." He cocked his eyebrow. "Couldn't you feel my presence behind you like Zeno does?"
"Geez, no. I'm not like him, I normally can't tell those things. I have no sixth sense, I'm normal." Yoon bit his tongue. He knew what she meant to say, but that wasn't the right adjective to use. She grabbed the chair from the floor and put it back against the table. "What can I do for you?"
"I finished it." He held the book in his arms towards her. I was wondering if I could..."
"Go grab the one you want, yes!" she beamed. "You don't have to ask me."
"Thank you very much," he nodded and ran to the shelves to put back the book he had read. Yoon had already considered his options beforehand, so he only had to find the title he had chosen already, written on the spine of a blue one.
"Can I see?" Kaya asked, with a curious look in his eyes. Yoon raised it up. She seemed to think about it for a bit.
"Oh, that one's really, really outdated," she sighed and walked towards the shelf. "There's this horrible side effect to one of the recipes that was discovered later, so please don't read it. Here." She took a different volume and offered it to Yoon. "It has another title and I used a different pen name, but it's pretty much like a newer edition of that one. It's good. Except for the last chapter; there are way better techniques today."
"Wait, whoa," he gasped as he grabbed the book. "You're the author of these?"
"Uh, yeah," she blushed. "These are mine. From my notes over the centuries. I also have some diaries about geography and history and personal stuff I don't want to forget, but most of my published books are medical textbooks."
"That's so cool!" Yoon said with fervor. It had been a dream of his to write a book one day.
"I... I figured... uh... more people need that knowledge to pass down through generations. It can reach more patients if you teach others, rather than just tending everyone yourself."
Yoon skimmed through the pages. It was a rather old book, at least fifty years old or more. The pages were quite yellow. So impressive! He couldn't help but admire Kaya even more.
"Is it hard? Writing a book?"
"Actually, yeah!" she laughed. "I'm not a genius so it takes me ages to get anything done. You need to do two difficult things." She raised her index and middle fingers. "First, you need to research and learn, so you know what you're going to write about and how to say it, and it has to be current, real facts. Second, you need motivation to want to sit down and write. And most times, having both at the same time isn't going to happen. Not to mention the time."
"You have all the time in the world, though."
"I do but I also do other things, like to travel with Zeno or tend people or sometimes do other jobs that aren't healer-related. Sometimes we don't have ink or paper with us either! So I take it easy and wait for my books to become pretty obsolete before starting anew."
The ink and paper was a problem Yoon knew well. He also realized that her rest stops at the library were likely with the purpose of authoring books and filling up her diaries, rather than actual vacations.
After all, caring for patients... In Kaya's condition, it would be insane to do that all the time. Yoon had been thinking about it, ever since she had revealed her story to them. It bothered him and concerned him a lot. He sat on Zeno and Kaya's bed, crestfallen.
"I don't understand how you do it..." he whispered.
"Well, I carry notebooks with me for when I discover new stuff. Then I use what I've written in other books and update it with my notes."
"No..." He closed his fingers against the book cover and pressed it. "How you can be a healer while being immortal. Doesn't it... dunno, break your heart? Knowing you're outliving everyone? That no matter how long you live... some people will still die on you?"
He had treated sick and wounded people he was unable to save. He couldn't even imagine how many people Kaya had met and failed to save. Had she gotten used to it? Was she desensitized? Did she still see them as important souls to help at all costs like Yoon, or were they akin to tiny birds with broken wings to her, nearly a goddess among mortals after living for so long?
And in a more personal sense... Three faces flashed in Yoon's mind. He knew the dragons would die soon. Lately, he had realized how much worse it must have been for Zeno, finally having brothers again to then losing them too soon. So he could, sometimes when the journey was arduous, feel the weight of dread in his chest that he usually tried to bury deep within and forget. He knew the fear of outliving, even if in a lesser scale than those two.
He felt the bed bouncing down. Kaya had sat next to him. When Yoon looked up, the youth and spark was gone from her dark eyes. He saw a sorrow most ancient in her stare, he saw her real age for once.
"...Constantly, yeah," she finally said. "Even after all these years I cry sometimes, when it's too unfair. It's never easy and it'll never get easier."
"Then why? Why haven't you quit?"
"Hmmmm." She clutched the hem of her kimono. "The same reason you haven't quit, I guess. It's just the right thing to do. In fact... I think it's better for them that I do care that much. Doctors and nurses should keep their heart, don't you think? Even if it hurt us."
Yoon said nothing, but he knew what she was saying. She looked ahead, through the window. Her voice turned softer and kinder.
"At some point, I asked myself: What's the use of living forever without a purpose, if you don't give back to the world? Even if it's short term, life has a meaning. If I can heal or save someone, I'm really glad! But staying with the others is just as important. You know, hundreds die alone because no one will treat them." Yoon knew. Kaya's voice broke. "I could have died alone myself at seventeen. It's so, so scary! Even if you prepare yourself, it crushes you. That's why I don't want people to leave this world on their own. Even if all I can do is giving some solace and hold their hands until it's time? I'm willing. Even if I'll mourn them and sob for days, I'll get better, I'm not alone. That's why it's okay. That's why I still help."
She looked at Yoon and moved a thumb to wipe a tear from his cheek. He hadn't noticed he had started crying. Kaya then put her arms around him. While she didn't cover much of him, being the same size roughly, her hug felt warm and cozy. Her hands, which smelled vaguely like the fresh herbs she had been grinding, moved to caress Yoon's hair. He embraced back firmly, unsure if she was comforting him or if she was looking for comfort from him. It was probably both, he concluded.
"Keep it, Yoon," she murmured after a long silence, still hugging him. "Keep that big heart inside your chest, never lose that humanity. I've met so many geniuses in this field who lose themselves and stop caring about people. But you mustn't. I mustn't. Even if it tears you apart, please keep it."
"You better believe I will," he grumbled with gritted tears, restraining a sniffle. He felt a kiss on his temple. After his journey with Yona and the others, after seeing and fighting against so much poverty, how else would it be?
And she was right. He wasn't alone. He had everyone and even Ik-soo back home. Thinking about the future was just unnecessary pain. They lived now and that's what mattered.
"Oh? Can Zeno join the hug?"
They looked at the threshold: Zeno had just entered the room. That day he had his hair braided. Yoon had thought that morning that Kaya was making up for their time apart in creative ways. The boy unhanded Kaya but before he could say no to the offer, a dragon had coiled around his body. He could hear the girl —the woman—'s giggles as he resigned to his fate.
"Zeno, Zeno! Yoon is so kind and considerate and cute! The cutest of them!" Kaya chirped.
"Yep!"
"Zeno, Zeno! Say, can we adopt him? I really want to adopt him!"
"What the hell?" Yoon cried, annoyance written on his face.
To his surprise, Zeno let him go and stood in front of his wife with a serious expression.
"No, Kaya. That's out of the question."
"I know. But..."
"He's your mother-in-law, Kaya! It makes no sense to adopt my mom!"
It was Yoon's turn to get up, anger piling up, while the other two were snorting.
"I'm neither your mother or your son, you eternal seventeen year-olds!!" he yelled.
"Eternal eighteen year-old," Kaya corrected with a grin.
"Argh!" He grabbed the book and walked towards the door. Before he could leave, he heard Kaya's voice.
"Being your mom was a joke but... Please do think of me as an older sister, okay? These adults keep forgetting you're younger, this one here included, and they should be the ones nurturing you just as much as you nurture them."
Zeno mumbled some excuse Yoon couldn't hear, but he stopped when Yoon turned to look at Kaya. Ever since Ik-soo took him with him, no one else had been so conscious about his needs.
"I... I appreciate it," he blushed lightly. "I think I'll do that."
He left immediately, embarrassed, before Zeno or her said something stupid again. After that conversation and learning so much about Kaya, having her in his strange family of sorts was an honor.
******
"Okay, you can open them up whenever you want!" Kaya said after handing out the last package. She was bouncing on her heels while everyone opened their gifts.
The first one was Kija, perhaps because of his large hand. He stared at the wooden figurine and the bottle with confusion.
"What is this?"
"The bottle is home-made bug repellent. It smells a bit weird so I added some flower scent so... now it smells like a weird bouquet instead, sorry. But it should keep mosquitoes and crawlies away! The other one..." She smiled as she looked at the vaguely dragon-shape statue. "To be honest, it's a present I got but I think you should have it. You see, it was given to me by ancestors of yours, long ago. It's time it returns to the hands of Hakuryuu Village."
Kija looked like he was going to cry.
"Kaya... Thank you very much for sharing this piece of our history with me. It's an honor. May I ask what it's for?"
Kaya-chan, I can't believe you and Lord Ouryuu still haven't had children! Here, have this fertility charm. My sister carved one and prayed to it before her wedding night, and they've had four bundles of joy so far! You have to continue the lineage of the Ouryuu as his wife, so please take it with you so you can be blessed and fulfill your duty.
"F-For good luck," Kaya lied without losing her smile. She didn't have the guts to throw it away, because she considered Guen's family as her own, so she took it as a souvenir instead. Not like it mattered since Ouryuu's blood made it impossible for her to get pregnant, but those ladies were too exhausting to argue against. "Oh! And I'm teaching Yoon my plum sauce recipe so that should be a present for you in a way."
"Ooooh, what a pretty comb!" Yona said with sparkles in her purple eyes. It was lacquered black and had tiny colorful flowers painted on its design.
"That kind of comb has big teeth with large gaps too, so it should be great for your curls. I have one to do Zeno's hair and it's amazing for unruly sorts. Ah, the other present is medicine for..." She made a pause and lowered her voice. "They're special painkillers. For cramps." Yona understood immediately and reached for Kaya for a hug. She returned the gesture.
"Thank you! They're both so useful!"
"A sharpening stone and..." Hak opened his eyes wide. "No way, is that a bottle of Fuuga Galebrew?"
"Saw it at the marketplace and I figured you haven't tried it in ages."
"Wow, thanks!"
"Not fair, I want to try that sake as well," Jae-ha sighed.
"Well, I guess I could give you one glass, Droopy Eyes."
"Yessss." Jae-ha's grin faltered once he saw his present. "A fan? Well, it's beautiful but I don't think I get it, Kaya-chan."
A smiling face and a wink came to Kaya's mind, long gone and a bit blurry but still alive in her heart.
"Some time ago, Zeno and I traveled with this girl for a few years. She was like a sister to me. You remind me of her sometimes and I think she would've liked you a lot, Jae-ha. I know you have your own fighting style but that fan was her weapon. Maybe you could find it a good use one day?"
"Oh, I see." Jae-ha touched the edge of the fan. It drew a drop of blood he sucked immediately. "Not bad, actually. I can't refuse the will of a young lady so I'll take it." He then turned to the booklet with interest. "Are these music sheets?"
"Yup! Should be handy for your traveling artist shows. Besides, I want to hear you play."
"But of course!" Kaya felt relief when she saw him smile. She didn't know Jae-ha that well, so she had feared he wouldn't like his gifts. She looked at Shin-ah, who was observing and touching his new soft scarf.
"I heard you're cold sensitive and I saw this pretty sky blue fabric. It's still a long way for winter, but for trips to mountains they're nice to have."
He nodded.
"And two bags of pistachios, one for you and one for Ao. Since they don't grow in Kouka, I figured you haven't tried them yet?"
He shook his head. She moved to him to pet his hair.
"I hope you like them, then!"
"Thanks, Kaya..."
"I can't accept this, Kaya," Yoon said as he pushed his package against her.
"Why?"
"I should've suspected you were up to something when you asked me what books I had liked the most yesterday. But this one is yours! And the other is from the library!"
She laughed but her hands remained behind her back.
"We have copies for both in the second building. Don't worry about it and accept them! Or if you want a different book you couldn't read yet, we can check if there's a copy of that one instead."
"There's... There's really no problem? Just like that? Are the librarians fine with it?"
"As long as there's at least one copy left they can remake again, they won't mind because it's me asking."
He looked torn, but the power of free books won.
"...I have enough notes for this one, so I want to check out this world atlas I saw," he said. "After we pack our bags, though."
"Sure thing. You guys take your time."
"Doesn't Zeno get presents...?" Shin-ah asked after munching a pistachio.
"Zeno got new robes," Zeno grinned, laying in bed on his belly and chin cupped inside his hands. "Also, just being with Kaya for a few days is my present."
"Smooth," Jae-ha teased.
"Ah, is it okay if we pass by Ryusui first?" Kaya asked. "They have a really nice marketplace and I want some supplies that are cheaper there."
"Sure! It sounds like fun," Yona smiled.
"It's a gorgeous town. We'll have lots of fun seeing the stands there," Kaya nodded.
"Its settled," Yoon said. "Let's hurry and pack now, rare beasts. I still have to check the books."
"Yeeeeeees!"
Kaya was sure it was going to be a lovely trip.
Notes:
Well, here it is, the last part. I want to thank you guys for your patience. I've been building up to this chapter since even before I finished the main fic, especially the "you can't adopt your mother-in-law!" joke. So here it is and I hope you've liked this miniseries. I don't know if it met your expectations but that's how I envisioned the way they'd meet Kaya and how they'd get along with her. There's a lot of stuff to explore in their dynamics, so feel free to leave drabble requests for interactions or even just unrelated-to-HHB Everlasting Flower prompts if you want, either here or on my Twitter (username is the same everywhere, taotrooper) or AO3 comments. I have no idea if I'll be able to get inspired or fulfill them, but I'll be taking notes and we'll see.
The timeline for The Library is between the Lushing Forest arc and the Sei arc. They're still stopping by the same marketplace so the canon events (meeting Ayura and Tetora, Yona buying the lapis lazuli for Hak) should still happen despite Zeno not needing a new outfit anymore.
I hope you enjoy!

3. How do they position themselves in a group? Dothey like to be the center of attention, or do they hang back at theedges of a crowd?
Answered here. Â
14. What do they care deeply about? What kind ofloyalties, commitments, moral codes, life philosophies, passions, callings, orspirituality and faith do they have? How do these tend to be expressed?
Rory cares deeply in general, to bequite honest. It’s not that she doesn’t have her own ideals, it’s that she’seffusively empathetic (and rather gullible) and she’d easily fall for prettywords and also embellish them with her own imagination so that everything is afairy tale in her head. I don’t mean this in the romantic sense – she is not aromantic at all – but she is highly idealistic and optimisticand truly believes anything can be improved upon if one really desires that. She sets her expectations quite high and suffers greatly from disappointmentwhen they’re trashed because the real world does not work like that. Shequickly gets taken in by ideas, and later on when they don’t fit the tall ordershe’s created for them in her head, she abandons them.  It’s a relativelyfast process when viewed from the outside, she’s not the type to harbourgrudges, but no matter how quickly her hopes dissolve, it’s still bitterlydifficult. She wears her heart on her sleeve – if she feels something, shefeels it to the very core of her, even if it’s only for hours, or mereminutes. Â
Her loyalty to people is slightly morestable than her flitting about from fleeting idea to ephemeral hope. If sheloves someone (and to be loyal to them, to her, will primarily mean to lovethem) it is extremely difficult to break that bond. A person would have toconsistently be horrible to her, for an indeterminate period of time for her toeventually decide they’re not worth it. Once she’s hooked, she’s willing to putup with a tremendous amount of emotional strain and crushed hopes in them. However, once she’s decided she’s done, that’s it – it’s final, and she wouldturn from staunch defender to resentful enemy without qualm. Â
Her life philosophy, though on a rathershallow level, is: do no harm but take no shit. Because of who she is as aperson, the latter would invalidate the former, as she’s far more concernedwith it than being nice. She’s never violent without cause, however she is theone to decide what that cause is, and her bar is set quite low for it. She iseasily angered and impulsive and could be set off by anything froma misinterpreted comment to something that most other people wouldreasonably agree would warrant an explosive response. Â
Low-key, Rory grew up in a spiritualcommunity. It was also very small, and they had no delusions of grandeur, soher own faith is informed by that and is quite nonintrusive. She believes thatthe universe gives back what she puts in it, more or less. She has a vague ideaof a deity, but it’s not in the biblical sense of a punishing god. It’s more alaw of attraction – certain patterns of behaviour inspire certain responses inreturn. Penalty for wrongdoing is never guaranteed, but it does increase thechances of something unpleasant happening in retaliation; just as good deedsdon’t promise a positive response, but at least encourage the possibility ofone. Basically, she’s a mix of “what goes around, comes around” and “the worlddoesn’t owe you shit”. Quite a few of her guiding principles are vaguelycontradictory in nature, which is, ultimately, what makes her so adaptable.
21. What kind of relationships do they tend tointentionally seek out versus actually cultivate? What kind of social contactdo they prefer, and why?
FRIENDSHIPS!!! Friendships all around. But it’s also the sort of relationship she actually cultivates. She seeks whatshe’s willing to put effort into, and she isn’t concerned about things likestatus, so if she likes you, she won’t care who or what you are, more oftenthan not. She does have some built-in bias – it’s not very likely she’d try tobefriend an Upyr for example – but it wouldn’t be too hard for her toget over it if she deems the other person worthy of it. Â
Of late, she prefers to stick to her ownkind, because she still suffers from disillusionment in Sanctuary as a whole, but after she’s worked through her issues, she would return to being all bubblyand hopeful with anyone who crosses her path. Â
28. What are they likely to do if they have theopportunity, resources, and time to accomplish it? Why?
This might be a bit sci-fi at themoment, given the logistical and natural impediments she has to overcome, butif there’s one thing to remember about Rory is that she has an adamantium gradestrength of will. To call her obstinate would be a gross understatement and nomatter how flighty she is in general, if she decides something is worth it, sheis like a dog with a bone. Before she was turned, she was well on the way of becomingher tribe’s healer. Even as a human, Rory was not squeamish. She demonstrated anatural aptitude towards healing from a young age, easily remembering plantsand their uses, and despite her general whimsical personality, her approach tofixing all the ways a body could break was pragmatic and practical. Consideringthat quite a lot of the world’s medical knowledge was lost with the wipeout ofmost of the human population, she revealed an almost intuitive understanding ofhow infections bloom and fester, and how everything may be bound together inorder to function. She appreciates the importance of cleanliness when treating openwounds, and knows how to set a broken bone back in its place, and how to soothea fever.
Vampires don’t have much use for healersand in the past five years or so she has not been given much of a chance to plyher skills, but with her newfound access to old knowledge, she wants tocontinue studying and improving her knowledge on the matter. Given enough time, and enough stability, she dreams of reviving the modern concept of hospitals inall permanent human settlements that the founding of Sanctuary will inspire. She wants to work in an environment that would enable her to return to heroriginal life choices (mainly because she refuses to be told what she can andcannot do). The fact that this will prove to all naysayers that vampires aremuch more than savage, blood-hungry beasts is most certainly a bonus, ofcourse.  Â
33. How dothey learn about the world–what is their preferred learning style? Hands-onlearning with trial and error? Research, reading, and note-taking? Observationor rote memorization? Inductive or deductive reasoning? Seeking patterns andorganization? Taking things apart and putting them back together? Creativeprocessing via discussing, writing about, or dramatizing things?
It’s a mix of research, reading andhands-on trial and error. Rory likes to learn new things, she prefers to do soby interacting with another person and have them tell her about it, but if thetopic really interests her, then she will start looking up things on it on herown. She’s not organized enough to take notes, or memorize by rote. She readssomething, remembers things from it and the rest of it is cemented bypracticing what she’s learned from manuals. She relies a lot on her intuitionand does have a tendency to jump to conclusions but she will correct herself ifshe’s shown she is wrong (she just has to agree that this is the case). Shedoes tend to learn faster by taking things apart and having to put them backtogether again, but she would have to be interested in how they work in thefirst place. Mechanical objects might grab her attention for a while, but shedoesn’t find them particularly fascinating in the long run. She might amuseherself with simpler mechanisms, but she wouldn’t really wish to study anythingoverly complex.
She’s the type of person who knows alittle about a lot, when it comes to general knowledge. In terms of acquiringpractical skills she is a fast learner. By this, it doesn’t mean she reachesutmost artistry, but she does become capable. She’s naturally dexterous and theheightened vampire senses help in this regard, as well.
41. Whatassociations do they bring to mind? Words or phrases, images, metaphors ormotifs? Why?
The idea forRory (in her most primitive form, when she wasn’t so much a character, morelike a question mark in my head) came from a Catherynne Valente quote “I do so love my witches and wicked queens. Ifind myself drawn to feminine archetypes that previous generations have foundthreatening or dangerous: crones, oracles, madwomen, Amazons, VIRGINS WHOAREN’T HELPLESS, bad mothers. I love togive the vagina dentata voice. It so rarely gets to speak for itself.” (theemphasis being the seed that eventually grew into her).
She isinspired by children’s stories, but the old-fashioned kind, those in which thewitch is killed by being forced to dance on coals, and where the disobedientchild dies at the end, the cautionary tales of old, rather than the cleaned-upversion of Disney. She’s not the princess trapped in a tower, she’s the one whoeither befriends the dragon, or slays it – she’s someone who can do both, if she feels she has to.
LISTEN I couldprobably write about the myriad of inspirations I have for her until my fingersfall off and still miss LOTS of things – so here’s her pinterest board: quotes, images, metaphors, edits etc.

how I stay (practically) protected with my work
if it isn’t clear already, I maintain a distance from the “spiritual” and “healing” communities. my personal experience has gathered an awareness of profound mental health issues amongst some of the bandwagon “tribes” aka groups/circles/”leaders” and meetups in those communities. it is unfortunate, as yes, it would be great if mentally and otherwise sound people could all convene somewhere. but that just has not been my experience in those “communities”. hence, my patient base is primarily corporate or real-word oriented. or thriving broadway actors or film and television actors. but, very much real world all the same. the people I get to see are not only sound, grounded and for the most part typically without any mental health issues – they are more so thrivers versus survivors; yet at the same time they have been through so much spiritually and personally and professionally.
that said, so many people focus on the “how can I protect myself energetically” when I feel like the question should be “how can I protect myself practically“? the world and our awareness is not run on intangible awareness alone, it is run on red flags and base level mental health hallmarks that otherwise “spiritual” people will ignore if they are not well-versed in the actual human world. I have a diverse background spanning a career in finance dealing with C suites, corporate America across the board in multiple industries, and entertainment production. this real world experience has served me very well. I see so many people, never having had hands-on experience in that capacity, struggling and asking me how to “protect” themselves while doing their healing work on others. typically these people who ask this question have not navigated boiler room environments in the corporate world, or maybe they went to art or design school and that’s it because they are young, or maybe they have worked ONLY in creative environments without structure and their idea of healing is going to Burning Man. all of that alternative living is well and good, but it certainly doesn’t provide a whole lot of understanding as it relates to practically protecting oneself, as there is no 3d application for it. so, if your background is very different from mine, or you were just born on a palm tree in Malibu, or your social circle is not diverse and everyone around you is exactly like you, how do you venture out into the world to do healing work and stay protected?
well, again, if we haven’t been around the block and experienced a number of different walks in life, it is going to be more difficult to spot the MANY different characters in the world, and the many different maneuvers by which they operate. being able to spot and understand people from this perspective is KEY in “protection” (I don’t care how intuitive or “psychic” we think we are — that is often a major, major pitfall in and of itself, thinking we “know better”). no, I am not talking about energetic protection. that can be another blog post. in fact, I do write about that in a post under psychic attacks. what I want to talk about here is how to protect oneself in a practical fashion, and how I stay protected in this way (nevermind the Harry Potter side of life, the undercurrents or matrix of energy and so forth!). here, in a nutshell, is how I stay protected:
I have a wonderful clinical collaborator/sounding board with decades of clinical psychoanalyst experience to support me. this person has seen. it. all. I consult with this person regularly, for feedback and confirmation on any case that pops up for me that may show a base level red flag. all of my work in my private practice is confidential, and I do not share names with the clinician. I do, however, see how my gut level knowing and understanding of a human archetype is growing faster and faster as we occasionally compare particular notes. you see, I have my approach — which explains itself in a slightly more intangible and mystical and wordy fashion — and my clinical sounding board has hers. it is a beautiful blending of both worlds. so, how does this protect me?
it is incredibly important if we are not a trained clinician, yet we are doing any kind of healing work which includes intense and prolonged dialogue, to have a trained support system in place in the event another individual tries to invade our psychic or psychological space. that space bleeds into ALL other spaces: not only cognitively but emotionally, spiritually, and of course physically. even trained clinicians and psychoanalysts have their support system, as they are at high risk for being manipulated by those with sociopathic qualities. sociopaths LOVE therapists and healers in general. they feel like it is the ULTIMATE conquest! this is why we see movies and tv shows about therapists who are either seduced or manipulated — from a psychological starting point only, that’s all it takes — and it’s a whole STORY. fortunately, I don’t have a story. I always see the flags nearly immediately, and I withdraw even more quickly. that said, I do need to protect myself…
I have only had to bounce a few situations/dynamics off of my supportive clinician. though we talk about many other things as well. when it comes to specific cases or dynamics of interest to me, I don’t even need to give this clinician age or gender most of the time — and within seconds, they are rattling off an entire diagnosis and scenario that lines up exactly with my gut intuition. we may have different languages for expressing what we see, but the line-up is incredible. I protect myself by having someone who is older than me and more experienced with mental illness and various psych disorders, to support me if I ever feel confused. by the way, if we feel confused by someone, we are often dealing with a mentally ill individual. in addition, I am fortunate, because I have never (knock on wood) had an issue of transference come up in any of my sessions, where I confuse a patient with someone from my past. I made a clear and distinct decision not to begin doing what I do, publicly, until my 30s and until I had worked through all of my “past” stuff to the point where it absolutely will not show up and confuse me in a session. I KNEW myself, first. this also makes it much simpler when I have a question or concern and bring it to my clinician. there is no “working through” anything, relative to a particular scenario as I might otherwise confuse with something from my life.
there are a number of young women whom I have helped begin their healing practices. some as young as 20. they haven’t even gotten close to the “real world” yet. though they are precocious and ahead of their time in other ways. I don’t mentor their individual cases nor would I. but, my suggestion is to 1) get your own psychotherapist or psychoanalyst to continue working through YOUR stuff and 2) find a seasoned (not a 30 year old) psychoanalyst who is adept at assessing and concluding personality disorders and mental illness, should you ever find yourself in a situation that does not feel right. this has happened to me, in the past, only a handful of times. just a handful, in the past near decade. that is a blessing. but, when I needed the support, I really needed it. make sure you can go to this person, if not your own therapist, to assist you with any confusing or difficult cases.
when we work in a healing/therapeutic (any kind of therapeutic modality) capacity, we are targets for the soulless. this is a given. they can target us in many, many different ways. that is why it has been important to me, given the fact that cognitive discussion and advising is 90% of what I offer through my work, that I have a proper team in place as a sounding board. years ago when I could not even afford a therapist, I would go to Alanon or any free programs to support me. then, I got a therapist. then, I found a clinician to support me when I had to deal with crazies and I missed the “signs” (there are always signs, p.s.). then, I got a gatekeeper and a full-time wonderful ivy league lawyer who specializes in medicine, and so on. so that I am always protected in this real-world way. this is more important than being “energetically” protected with some magic stone or whatever. though I do love magic stones, and I do certainly understand the underbelly of energetic travel! I do understand how people have tried and do try to “wear” me, take on my persona and aspects of me and live their life while I feel drained! but let’s be real, first. let’s get our ducks in a row so that we can be clear on what is actually happening on a fundamental level, first and foremost. then we can deal with the “energetic” elements clearly and effectively.
I stay protected with the team that I have in place, the team that I built, the team that I make myself vulnerable to every day or week. I started this team with no funds, when I had absolutely nothing. and sometimes the initial team failed me miserably and I felt the world was against me. but I just kept going, refining the team. and it became more and more solid. and now, with that growth, my practice has grown. and my practice continues to grow my team. each day that I learn “I don’t have to do it all alone”, I expand. and now I feel “safe” and strong and “protected” enough to take on major cases that I never imagined I would take on. and so I take them on. and they rock my spiritual world. and they actually reinforce how safe and protected I am. they would be there, they have been there, they are there, like a swift karate chop across the board in terms of whatever I could need legally, psychologically, logistically, creatively and even personally. bottom line: we have to be able to navigate the real world in order to protect ourselves.
