i don't know if i'd consider "avoiding yoko's wiles" to be much of a struggle on joe's part.

Footage of Yoko Shiraki and Joe Yabuki being hopeless

Rereading the series and I can't with these two.

They barely know each other and they're already so prickly and weirdly intense about each other. Joe's always out of control, but Yoko's rarely that petty.

She's so dishonest and low key unhinged in a subtler way than Joe, I love her. Rikiishi here's completing the tragic trio and he's just as unhinged as the other two.

The trademark Yoko burning a hole through Joe's head with her stare while doing her best to keep her power face. Her publicly acting as a sort of antagonist to Joe, when she's intentionally shaping his career is so interesting. She's described as weird several times during the series by other characters, and in a way she is. What she wants to achieve isn't proper for a woman in her position in 1970's Japan. Like Joe, she doesn't want to fit in with what's expected of her and can't live with this dissatisfaction she feels (even if she can afford to act on it in a significantly less self destructive way).

Yoko again having a hundred conflicting feelings in her head and I'm not sure if she likes being called a devil or an angel (I'm thinking the original is more "goddess") more. Yes, Joe, "cunning eyes", right, that's what those are, you're such a smart boy. They both get each other in a really fundamental way yet they're so dishonest about each other. Love how Noriko and Tange don't even want to comment on any of that, it's so embarrassing.
