Yoh Asakura:

When Yoh first met you, his eyes were immediately drawn to your feline features.

He couldn’t help but be reminded of Matamune, which made him feel a little more comfortable around you.

Your cat-like features are similar to Matamune’s and often send him into stages of nostalgia. Because of this, he often goes out of his way to spend time with you.

He found your supportive personality attractive. Having someone in his corner is always reassuring for him, even if he doesn’t need it.

The first couple times you took care of him after his shaman fight, he was actually kind of surprised.

The rest of the group trusted Yoh a lot, so they often didn’t check up on him unless he was injured. Yet, you made the effort to make sure he was okay even if he was completely fine.

He started to become really appreciative of it, because even if he was perfectly fine physically, sometimes the fights took a toll on him mentally. After all, it’s hard to stay laid back all the time.

The first time you took a massive hit for him, he literally almost broke down. You had taken a hit from Marco, who was always pretty merciless with his attacks.

He was VERY tempted to beat the shit out of Marco, but he knew that wouldn’t solve anything. He quickly brought you to Faust to get you all healed up.

Assuming you got knocked out, he was so relieved when you woke up. He did scold you for scaring him and for being so reckless, but he made up for it in affection.

He would literally never let you leave his sight for the next couple days. Yes, he’s paranoid, but he does eventually calm down.

Ren Tao:

In the beginning of your relationship, he absolutely hated how willing you were to take hits for him. As much as he appreciates it, he does NOT want to have to deal with you potentially dying to save him.

Your neko features never bothered him or anything, but he hates how silently you move around. He made sure to give you some kind of bell to attach to your clothes, so you stop sneaking up on him.

He’s often kinda embarrassed about you cheering him on. It’s nothing bad, it’s just that he’s never really had people in his corner before. Plus, it’s kinda embarrassing when you’re cheering the loudest.

He got super embarrassed when you joined his family in cheering him on. He made you swear you would never do it again.

He doesn’t mind you taking care of his injuries, especially given that he’s the one that normally takes the heavy hits, but he leaves the bigger injuries to Faust.

He does occasionally get flustered when you’re bandaging him up, since he normally does it himself. It’s also just a weirdly intimate thing for him because you’re fully touching him.

The first time you took a hit for him, he literally almost killed you himself when you woke up. He was so upset about you risking your life for him, no matter how many times you explained to him that you were okay with it.

He loves you a lot, so he hates seeing you injured. As much as he appreciates it, he also gets pretty paranoid about it afterwards.

He’ll cool it once you tell him to, but he often keeps an eye on you now whenever you both are on the battlefield.

When you asked to sleep in the same bed as him, his face became the spirit of fire no joke while horohoro just like *raises eyebrows*

absolutely great ( no, it was horrifying. )

knowing if you do one wrong move and you would be beat to death was horrifying.

But, you HAD to hug him while you were sleeping, he woke up.

And Yohs s/o got scared and screamed at night so he scolded the both of them and muttered a sorry to you, and made sure horohoro didnt hear.

Yoh would be honest: he is relieved to have someone like you around. In a world where spirits and shamans and humans coexist within a world of beautiful madness, stability needs to be maintained to keep everything afloat here. And for stability to be maintained, most rely on the Great spirit and the Shaman Kings for such jobs. But to be seated with the Great Spirit means having incredible power, to control and even shape the world to their liking, which of course all kinds of people want that power. Especially those who hunger in greed. So naturally to prove one's worth to be a Shaman King, a test would be held. That of which is the Shaman King Tournament. And apparently it requires "mostly" in violence

And with Hao as his opponent, Yoh would need all the strength and energy he could preserve to last more than an hour against a literal century old bahamuth that is apparently his twin

He personally think it's neat, and also intriguing whenever the moment you spot any kind of injury no matter how small or big or critical it's all wrapped up nice and clean in moments notice. He can be quite surprised and amused about it cuz one moment he's black and blue and the next he's a mummy statue.

He thinks you're so kind and sweet when you also help treat others wounds (even his enemies) indiscriminately and he admires you for that (which his teammates are greatly concerned for cuz no you're NOT supposed to heal the enemy but with Yoh around they're like ok fine)

This in turn makes you a valuable asset to his team, and everyone relies on you in critical situations for medical treatments so you've been dubbed as the "nurse" of the group

But as much as your reliability and presence is greatly appreciated, you're still Yoh's significant other; he would never, ever, wish for you to ever be taken from him. He's been alone for far too long and now he has someone who loves and appreciates him. And someone like that should be taken care of and be protected at all costs cuz goodness does Yoh love you

And because of that he's a bit hesitant whenever you're nearby in battle. Perhaps you can even fight and handle their opponents (which would be more relieving for his heart) but he's still a little worried. Yes you can take care of yourself and he trusts you, but he's still on alert in case you ever get hurt in battle. There will be hell to pay if someone even dares to--

-You were the two little kids that made the promise to marry each other when you were older and his parents openly called you a couple until Yoh met Anna.

-With Anna’s strict training you both became surprisingly strong Shamans but you left about three years before the official Shaman tournament.

-While you were traveling and enhancing your powers you met Hao. Though the whole meeting left you heartbroken and alone something about you made him want you more. The tearless enraged (e/c) orbs that complimented your blood stained face made him fall head over heels for you.

-Though with what little energy you had left you escaped him easily but he never could find you again.

-Neither of them see you again until during the Shaman Fights and Yoh absolutely tackles the hell out of you.

-“(Y/n)! You’re here I can’t believe it! Well of course I can believe it this is you we’re talking about but (Y/n)!”, Yoh screams hugging you tight.

-You’re both babbling away at each other like Nala and Simba were when they reunited and everyone is quick to notice the huge smile that drew over Yoh’s face as you spoke to him and embraced him.

-When you all have your encounter with Hao in Patch Village, Yoh is immediately protective of you stepping between you and Hao since he dared to walk up to you.

-That’s when everyone finds out you already know who Hao is since you’ve shared a fight with him.

-He killed your Mother and in return your left him a noticeable scar against the side of his neck, He’s been tracking you down ever since.

-Hao loves you because you’re strong, you don’t fear him, you hate him. He wants to keep you all to himself and since he’s surprisingly good at flirting your forced to blush on several occasions.

-Hao changes when you’re around, he’s almost so convincingly calm and gentle that you wouldn’t be able to tell that he was a mass murderer.

-Hao becomes a constant bother to you until you start getting used to his presence but you’d never tell him you enjoy having him around since he is still evil.

-“Such a pretty shade of red, did I make your heart race?”, Hao will ask cupping your cheek tenderly as he admires your red glow.

-You’ll slap his hand away and scoot closer to Yoh who will grin and stick his tongue out at his older brother.

-Each fight they’ll hope to hear or see you in the stands rooting for them, showing off just to impress you.

-Likewise they both do the same for you, Hao watches from afar but when you win he’ll make his Spirit of Fire create small heart shaped flames in front of you to show that he was watching. Yoh jumps from his spot in the stands and raced to hug you and congratulate you on a job well done.

-One night just before the pre-finals start both brothers find you and have something important to ask of you. Hao is much more calm and collected a soft smile on his face as he nervously plays with the ends of his hair. Yoh on the other hand, is a blushing mess nervously playing with his fingers as he calls out your name.

-“(Y-y/n)...I-I...”

-“(Y/n), we love you but we understand you can only love one of us back. Please choose who you want to care for your heart.”, Hao spoke with so much confidence on the matter.

-Hao was deeply upset by your decision, but he respected you enough to leave it as it was. Now he could focus on destroying you and becoming shaman king without hesitation.

-Yoh was so excited that you had accepted his feelings that he lunged into your arms and placed a sweet kiss to your lips

-“Heehee I’m so glad you feel the same. I love you (Y/n).”, Yoh cheers in a soft voice pecking your lips again just to be sure it wasn’t a dream.

-Somehow you snuck into Yoh’s room with the boys and everyone woke up the next day to see you balled up at Yoh’s side, the goofiest grin plastered over his face.

-Horohoro was quick to notice the small love bite on the side of his neck neck and snickered, seems like you were the dominant and possessive one in the relationship.

-Anna is a bit heartbroken at first but you promised to still let her whip you and Yoh into shape if you ever slacked off to much.

He was happy with Anna by his side and you didn’t want to get between them when you knew they were meant for each other.

-Once you had pulled away from Yoh, Hao scooped you up in his arms and you both vanished. Having returned to his camp you stared at him in wonder to what he was going to do next.

-“To think that you would have actually grown to love me. I still can’t believe you actually do but I’m happy... absolutely happy. My little star.”, he hummed embracing tenderly as if you’d break if he held you to hard.

-You were nervous about your decision, thoughts overfilled your mind about how crazy you were for falling for your mother’s murderer, Hao could sense it so he washed away your insecurities with a soft peck to the cheek.

-“I’ll make sure you never regret your choice, even if I have to start from square one. I love you (Y/n), you don’t have to worry about anything by my side.”, He’ll whisper in your ears hugging you tight.

-Unsurprisingly he’s very touched starve so he’s always seeking you out for physical affection, be it a kiss or just holding your hand.

-Super romantic, you do have to keep him under control since he’s a bit protective and possessive but with a good scold you’re able to get him to respect your personal space and consider your feelings towards his behavior.

I mean, he planned on marrying Anna after all! Imagine what would happen if he tried to call it off.

He'd probably take some time to clear his mind, asking his friends and family for any advice on what to do.

He'd eventually talk it out with Anna, which surprisingly goes quite well. No hard feelings and even some words of encouragement!

During this time, I think he'd definitely be a bit distant. I don't think he'd actively try to avoid you, but he'd probably be less talkative or touchy.

However, once he has everything sorted out, he'd slowly start actively pursuing you.

There'd be little changes in his behavior: he'd be hugging you or holding your hand more often, naturally standing closer to you, staring at you more often, and the likes!

It probably wouldn't be super noticeable at first, since you guys would probably be close friends before all of this.

If you don't get the hint, then he'd start upping up the ante. He'd start spending more alone time with you, gifting you little trinkets, training with you, etc.

Eventually, he'd have the courage to confess to you. Of course, if you confess to him first, he'd be ecstatic.

Overall, super sweet and chill about the whole thing. He'd have his awkward moments, but he's super relaxed and comfortable around you.

Horohoro:

Another one who'd have a mental crisis, but for different reasons.

Given what happened last time Horohoro liked someone, he's terrified that you'll end up with the same fate.

He almost immediately becomes distant, too lost in his fears and intrusive thoughts to actually consider what he's doing.

It isn't until someone like Ren or Yoh knocks some sense into him that he understands what he's actually doing.

He takes a lot of time to himself, reflecting on what he should do and if he should even try to pursue you at all.

Not only that, but he also has to consider a lot of other circumstances! With the competition still going on, Hao's presence, and his own personality, who knows what'll happen?

He's so scared about scaring you away. He doesn't want to hurt you, but he also doesn't want someone to target you.

If you confronted him first, he'd be extremely nervous. He'd be serious though, explaining his fears and apologizing for pushing you away.

If you didn't confront him, he'd probably approach you when he knew he couldn't avoid it any longer. He tells you about the issue, wholeheartedly expecting you to reject him.

If you reject him, he'd understand. If you reciprocated his feelings, he'd be so grateful and happy. It'd take him a while to get fully comfortable with the new situation, but you'd get to see the old, playful Horohoro soon enough.

He'd be stuck by your side, always at your beck and call whenever you needed him. He's super protective and clingy, always going to you whenever something upsets him. Overall, it'd be a bit of work in the beginning, but he'd be super sweet and loyal!

Ren:

I can see this going one of two ways. He'd either be super confident and accepting of his feelings, or he'd be panicked and freaking out. Maybe both.

Ren's the kind of guy who confronts his problems head on, but he seems to struggle when it comes to an internal problem.

He probably seeks out Yoh's advice first. I mean come on, Yoh's the one with a fiancé after all.

Ren also talks to his family, asking them about how he should go about this. He also wants some other points of view on the matter. After all, he wants to be prepared for every possibility.

He takes some time to prepare. He plans out an outline of what he wants to say, but he also prepares himself for rejection.

Once he feels ready, he approaches you nonchalantly. He keeps his confession short and sweet, laying out the basic foundation of what he wanted and what he'd like if you agreed.

If you reject him, he understands and quickly moves on. It would depend on you whether or not your relationship with him changes, but he wouldn't be too bothered by it.

If you accepted his feelings, he'd be pleased. He'd sit down and quickly establish stuff like boundaries. He's let you know about the stuff that comes with beings his partner, and you'd do the same.

He's not super physically affectionate, but he makes up for it through acts of service.

He's also a bit protective given the enemies him and his family have, so he's usually stuck by your side.

Overall, he's super loyal despite not being super vulnerable. It'd take some time for both of you to find a normal routine, but he'd eventually get the hang of it.

Lyserg:

Lyserg is definitely one of the more complicated ones on this list.

Given how good Lyserg appears to be when it comes to hiding his feelings, I honestly don't know how he'd react when he first realizes his feeling for you.

Whether or not he's with the X-Laws, I think he'd be conflicted on what to do.

I see Lyserg as the one who doesn't do anything about his feelings. He tries pushing them down, hoping that they'll eventually just go away.

I doubt that he'll approach you about it, so you'd probably be the one to confront him about his behavior.

I also think it'd be a lot worse if he had just joined the X-Laws. He'd be missing you terribly, but he'd also be actively ignoring you and pushing you away.

With everything and everyone in the way, you'd probably get fed up or give up. He's not surprised, but he slowly becomes more frantic and persistent in wanting to see you.

If you agree to meet, he'd confess everything. He'd probably cry and beg for at least your forgiveness, promising to never do this again.

If you reject him, he cries himself to sleep that night. If you accept his feelings, he runs to you sobbing. He hugs you tightly, nuzzling into your shoulder and accidently getting your shirt wet.

He'd actively start working on himself in order to help the relationship, even sticking up to Marco a few times. He's not the most affectionate, but I see him as a guy who's great with words. He'd write you little love letters, expressing his love for you and how grateful he was for you.

Overall, he's super sweet and affectionate behind closed doors. He's more modest around the group, but he makes sure too make up for it.

Chocolove:

The most accepting and reassured with his feelings out of the entire group.

When he first realized he fell for you, he didn't mind acknowledging it. Sure, he felt a little embarrassed, but he couldn't help but feel giddy.

He wouldn't change the way he acted around you, but it'd be obvious that he was taking a liking to you. He'd be more playful, more touchy, and he'd do more jokes and stunts to get your praise and attention.

If you reciprocated with teasing remarks, you can expect him to be flustered as hell. He'd quickly regain his composure though, teasing and playfully flirting back.

This wouldn't change when he became blind, but I think he'd start spending more alone time with you.

With everything that'd happened, he'd be a lot more vulnerable with you. The loss of his friends hit him hard, and he doesn't want to take his time with you for granted.

He'd initiate small acts of physical affection, testing the waters to see what you like and don't like. Once you were comfortable with each other, then he'll start being more openly affectionate around the others.

Wrapping his arm around your shoulders, hugging you, holding your hand, it doesn't matter. If you like it, then he likes it.

Eventually, he'd build up the courage to properly confess. Maybe with a cheesy pun, but it's certainly adorable.

If you reject him, he'll understand and back off despite being disappointed. If you accept him, he'll be so happy that he'll pick you up and twirl you around.

Overall, the most playful and relaxed. He'll have his flustered and embarrassed moments, but he knows you love it.

Hao:

The most confident about his feelings. The second he realizes what he's feeling, he immediately begins pursing you.

If you were on his team, he'd pursue you in private. He'd start hanging out with you more, but he doesn't beat around the bush about his feelings.

If you weren't on his side, then he'd have fun messing with you. He'd show up at random times, teasing you relentlessly just to get your attention.

Sometimes after your fights, he'd secretly approach you and compliment your skill. He doesn't do this with amateurs, so he considers you special.

Given his mind reading abilities, he'll automatically know whether you like him or not. Even if you don't feel the same, he'll still continue his fun until he's bored.

If you happen to be bold, he'll happily have flirting sessions with you. His remarks are teasing and playful, but they can sometimes become a little possessive.

He doesn't necessarily feel the need to confess, but he will nonetheless. In private, under the stars, he'll take your hand and ask you to rule beside him.

Breaking the news to the others doesn't matter to him, but he'll be alright with keeping the relationship a secret if you really wanted to.

You'll have to make up for his lack of physical affection from the last 1000 years, so be prepared for a lot of late night snuggles. He'd only be affectionate in private, since he doesn't need anyone else knowing about his weakness: you.

When he becomes the Shaman King, he gives you the option of whether or not you want to stay with him in the Great Spirit. Though, he'd much prefer if you stayed with him.

Overall, he's infatuated with you. After years of being alone, he's grateful to have you by his side.

Shaman king Fan fic : A Case of mistaken Identity

This fic has two ends to read to the bottom, This covers a scenario between a Fem- Reader deciding their future list of characters featured below.

Main scenario: The ribbon of Destiny

You had been friends with Yoh for four months, Ever since you met him on monument hill one fateful night as you were there to attend to the grave of one of your ancestors, It would have been a brief conversation until you said “By the way can you see that samurai” with those words Yoh’s interest was peeked, For the rest of the night Yoh and you talked He explained that he was a shaman and the samurai explained that he was Amidamaru who had became Yoh’s spirit ally when their goals aligned.

You agreed to meet with Yoh on a nightly basis and so you did, It was a month into these evening meet ups that you noticed you were beginning to have feelings for him however you knew about Anna and she knew about you, Anna did not like these meet ups I mean she really didn’t like them as she punished Yoh for meeting up with you like that, Even though he assured her that it wasn’t like that.

Everything came to a head the night after the comet of destiny appeared, Anna caught you confessing your feelings to Manta, The next thing you felt was the sharp sting of a hand across your cheek and the harsh words that were spoken “I forbid you from seeing Yoh ever again, I will let you go with just this but if you show your face here again I will make sure you suffer in your afterlife”

With these harsh words you broke into tears, Nothing could console you and you knew this would be the only outcome for not dampening these feelings, you KNEW that Yoh and Anna were meant to be but stupidly you held up hope that he would reciprocate those feelings, After that you dropped out of the school you all attended and started attending a school in your district, Any spirits you made friends with in your brief moments in Yoh’s life you ignored and for the most part you returned to the world you came from.

Half a month had passed since you had saw Yoh and you were back to your old life, You studied in your free time for your finals and you focused yourself on getting into a good college as you went back to your primary goal of getting a degree in (Insert what you want to do here), It was late as you left cram school and you knew it was your turn to pick up ingredients for the evening meal as you left the store with meat and rice for the dinner you spot a familiar face, It couldn’t be, Yoh ?

Without a moments thought you ran towards the familiar figure “Yoh, are you alright?, Its been awhi” your words were cut short as you dawned on your mistake, The person in front of you did indeed look like your one time crush but he was different, You could not see warmth in his face and as you looked into his face you noticed a deep sadness, Your thoughts trailed on as you had noticed you hadn’t spoke since the hick up you only snapped back when the figure in front of you began to speak.

“Hello miss you seem to have spaced out there, Are you okay?” He enquired as you stepped back from him; you collected your self and did a bow of apology.

“I’m sorry you look a lot like someone I used to know” You managed to speak out, your face turning red as you hid in the folds of your scarf, Something must have amused the familiar stranger as he burst into a mocking laugh, He gripped his sides as he continued to laugh.

“Wow the people in this country really are polite” He remarked whilst regaining his composure, Soon after he stopped laughing he introduced himself as Hao, The future king , this statement you found strange but you put it to the back of your mind as one of his eccentricities.

He asked you to meet him tomorrow night at the same time to which you agreed with caution, You made your way home to which you were scolded for being back late after your apologies and a bath you went to bed with so many questions on your mind.

Throughout the next day you couldn’t focus at school, Were you actually going to meet up with that Hao guy or were you going to go straight home and forget your encounter with him, Every hour that passed you flitted between your going and your not going with one final decision and out of actual curiosity you agreed to meet up with Hao.

Walking thought the darkening streets you found your way back to where just a day ago you met Hao, He waited there for you and offered you a sat by him, After a brief conversation in which you asked him the important questions of why he asked to meet you and what was his intentions he stood up and brushed himself off.

“If you want to know, Walk with me” Hao spoke out whilst walking away from you as you stood to follow and within no time the streets turned into woodland, If you weren’t curious about what he had to offer, This would be the part where you would book it and go home but still your curiosity still had a hold on you.

After walking for what felt like an hour you both came to a clearing that was far from town, Hao stopped walking and turned to face you with an eyebrow raised as he crossed his arms and sat on the floor.

“Before I tell you what I have to say I must find out if I can trust you, What are your intentions with the one called Yoh” He questioned in a tone that you knew if you answered with anything less that the truth would lead to dire consequences.

“I bare Yoh no ill will, I used to have feelings for him but I knew that it was stupid to, we have not spoke since his fiancé told me to back off, I went back to my life and that’s, that” you answered looking Hao dead in the eye, Your heart pounding in fear of what could happen, Its true that he looked like Yoh but you could sense he was a different kind of person, With Yoh you knew he’d never hurt you but with this person you were sure he’d kill you if you put a toe out of line.

“I see, So you have no ties to him at this moment in time” He asked.

“No like I said I have not seen him since Anna scolded me” You replied.

Hao then stood up and paced around looking deep in thought “Usually id kill any outsider that would be threat to my plans, But I find you interesting so ill let you live, Spirit of fire, this girl isn’t to be touched” you wondered what he meant with that, You were about to enquire when before you appeared to be a red demon cloaked in flames offering its hand to Hao.

“Now if you wish to know more, Meet me here tomorrow night If not go back to your life and I assure you we will not meet again” Hao remarked before disappearing from your sight, You found your way back to town and went home to mull things over.

I could not decide on what the reader would decide so to end the argument I will dedicate a page each to 2 sub scenarios 1 in which the reader doesn’t follow Hao and 1 where she does and you can decide which 1 you like the best

Scenario diverge: Plume of white Daisies.

(This scenario covers the reader’s choice in remaining at home and the results of this action)

There was no way you could go with him, Hao may have spared your life but that did not mean you owed him anything, You owed it to yourself to put this whole incident behind you and be content that for a brief time in your life you were a minor character in something important.

The next day at school all who knew you were shocked out of speaking, You walked into class and took your seat as one of your classmates broke the silence.

“why did you cut your hair? (insert name),I thought you were growing it” they asked as you looked at them with a warm smile and replied whilst opening your text book.

“I Just fancied a change of pace”

Years passed and the brief time you spent as part of the shaman world had faded from your mind, You were now an adult and now worked in the field of your dreams and were engaged to your S/O who you met whilst studying for your (insert field) Degree, You no longer lived in your hometown as you had to go where the work was however you returned every summer and winter for a week.

During one of your returns to your hometown you decided to visit the grave of your ancestor, not much had changed since your last visit there other than the fact that the grave looked to be attended to frequently and that Daises had began to grow upon the grave.

As you left the old graveyard, You spot a familiar face in the distance approaching a group of people, You came to recognise the tallest one as your long lost school crush and the other as you presumed right now wife, A little boy clings to the legs of his mother.

With a slight nod to them both you make your way back to your parents home, Petals of daises fill the air as you walk towards the future.

Scenario Diverge: Scent of hibiscus

(this covers the readers choice to follow Hao and the results of this action)

The morning after you were given the ultimatum from Hao, whether to remain in your world or follow him into the dangerous world of shamans and spirit fight, your mind was made up, You would follow Hao and learn what you could of the world he lives in.

It was early morning as you checked downstairs to make sure the house was empty, It was as your parents had left for work, You began packing a bag of the things you thought you would need and you wrote letters to your loved ones explaining that you were okay and that you didn’t want to be found.

When night approached you stood where Hao told you to meet him, you held you packed bag on one shoulder as you paced waiting for him hoping it wasn’t a trick, hoping that you didn’t need to go home and awkwardly say that your letters were a prank.

“Ahh you showed up, Right choice” You heard a familiar voice say as you turned to face Hao.

“Yes I did now show me what’s to be done”

You spoke out before you both disappeared into the night.

Years had started to pass, In that time you had trained under the watch of Hao and had become his Itako, You both travelled from place to place brining spirits (usually by force) to his side, You did go home from time to time al though meet ups with your family usually ended in arguments, Your parents accused Hao of derailing your path to success and that you could have been more than you are right now.

You didn’t care, You never regretted your actions not even when Yoh looked at you with suspicion when he saw you at the tournament nor when Anna accosted you intending to tell you the truth, The shock on her face was priceless when you told her you knew and didn’t care.

one night whilst sitting down for a cup of tea, you and Hao spoke of the past and the night you both met, he joked of your embarrassment before giving you a bouquet of aromatic hibiscus that to your shock had a ruby ring on one stem, that moment he got down on his knee and smirked.

“Well will you be my queen?”

“You need not ask my king”

Yoh had been very lonely for as long as he could remember. Despite being able to see and communicate with spirits, he couldn't really form any significant bonds or attachments besides his spirit ally Amidamaru. It was for that ability of his was Yoh acknowledged as an outcast, and what made him so isolated from humans

So when he met you, who accepted him wholeheartedly and actually loves him, Yoh was ineffably happy. More so than he'd show. The joy he felt in his heart was almost overwhelming he nearly teared up having been alone throughout his childhood. Having accepted him, he will accept you twice as much, and from that day forward not only will he cherish you, but he will protect you and be there for you no matter what, truly a sweetheart

Yoh is a quiet and endearing lover. He's gotten used to being by himself, but there's always room for two. That said, Yoh prefers to have your affectionate moments behind closed doors. Where everything is private enough to be open to each other and he's free to bask in your presence as much as he likes. So naturally, he adores cuddles. It could be in any position and in any place really. Just as long as there are little to no people around, it wouldn't matter where you are as long as he is pressed against you. Sweetie is naturally touch-starved, but if you're not exactly very affectionate, just a simple hug or hand-holding will suffice for him

Honestly, he would be absolutely smitten for you (silently). He admires almost everything about you, from your kindness and understanding to your little habits and quirky traits. Sometimes, he couldn't help but admire you from afar, being so thankful to have you as his partner

Yoh is very eager to commit to this relationship, because not only will he not be as lonely as he did before, he has someone to love. And boy it feels amazing to be loved. The mere thought warms his cheeks and plasters a big grin on his face with a boost of energy and motivation. Yoh cherishes your bond so much, it gives him a big reason to train harder and strive to be a Shaman King and becomes his drive. -You knew it was coming eventually, he loved Anna and you but from the start you knew Anna was the only one he would ever truly love.

-Truly it didn’t surprise you when you found them on the couch kissing up a storm.

-Of course it hurt, but you just smiled and walked up to your room to pack your things up in order to leave.

-Yoh rushed into the room to speak with you but when your cold dead eyes stared into his no words could come out of his mouth.

-“Stay healthy and strong Yoh, and don’t break Anna’s heart like you broke mine.”, you whispered staying just out of reach from his touch.

-No matter how much he wanted to speak his voice wouldn’t leave his throat, he looked guilty but you simply hugged him goodbye and whispered, “I fucking hate you, Yoh Asakura.”, before leaving.

-Amidamaru couldn’t even believe what his young master had done but he quietly stood by and watched you leave.

-It was rare to see Yoh cry, but as you walked past the gates of his home he couldn’t help but tremble and sob.

-He was never good at handling people disliking him but never once before did he have someone actually hate and loathe him.

-Yoh knew he wouldn’t get to see you again or apologize for his actions but he truly did love you.

Horokeu Usui

-This one hurt a little more then Yoh’s incident, mostly because Pirika was there to witness him cheating on you with some girl from the city.

-His eyes contained nothing but shock and regret when he realized you and Pirika had caught him in the act, he tried to explain but to your surprise it was Pirika herself who slapped him.

-With him now on the ground from the impact of her hand she grabbed your wrist and dragged you out of the room so you wouldn’t shed any tears in front of him.

-You broke down in the halls as you were dragged away, the tears wouldn’t stop no matter how much you wiped them away. You didn’t understand why he would do it.

-“Piri...Piri why? I don’t get it. Why did he do it?”, you cried brushing your tears away.

-“I’m not sure hun. I-I wish I knew.”

-Horohoro was always loyal to you, you were his snow bunny, so why? Why would he do it after filling your head with the sweet thoughts of marriage and family?

-You left that night, you didn’t bother answering his calls or texts and according to your spirit partner he pleaded desperately with them to contact you for him.

-You decided to go back to your hometown and refused to associate with him even as he continued to seek you out.

-Even when you blocked him he still sent you voicemails and messages through Pirika’s phone but you wouldn’t forgive him. Not after how heartbroken the betrayal left you.

-“(Y/n), I’m sorry please let me see you so I can explain. I can’t lose you like this, snow bunny please come back!”

-You didn’t except him to ever cheat, you loved him and he idolized you like a goddess so when you found him and Jeanne naked in his office it was hard to stomach.

-“Well I see you’re hard at work my love.”, you spoke just loud enough for them to hear you.

-Jeanne quickly covered up but Ren took his time, he had something on his mind and you were ready to hear it. How much worse could it be, your heart was already broken.

-“(Y/n), we need to end this.”, he simply stated his eyes staring deep into your own glossy hues.

-You always hated his cold glare, you took a deep breath and simply nodded your head, “You fell out of love didn’t you?”, you sighed not waiting for an answer, placing his lunch on his desk before you quietly turned on your heels and left.

-Jun noticed you leaving and smiled brightly at you hugging you as you tried to hide your pain. You were always accepting of others...even if you ended up the most hurt by their actions.

-You whispered goodbye but she didn’t understand why until she walked into Ren’s office to see him and Jeanne.

-You disappeared like nothing, nobody could find you or contact you but when they finally could it was years later and it was Jeanne inviting you to the wedding in an attempt to make amends with you.

-In a way their marriage was a sad day because you never did show up.

-He changed, you knew something was going on when you noticed how cruel he had suddenly became towards you.

-It didn’t surprise you one day when you saw him passionately kissing another woman at the front door of your home.

-You tried to stay calm but your inner rage had consumed your train of thought and your body reacted on its own. Before any of you could understand what had just happened his mistress had been pulled down the stairs by her hair and his cheek swelled from the intense impact of your opened hand.

-“(Y-Y/n)?”, he gasped holding his cheek.

-Your groceries were quickly discarded from your hand and replaced by a gun that was brimming with your Furyoku and oversoul, your pointed it right between his eyes and a dead expression etched itself over your face.

-“If you had a mistress you should’ve just told me that you didn’t love me anymore and left.”, you yelled shoving the stupid engagement ring he had given you into his chest as you released your oversoul and entered your home.

-“W-wait I-I-“

-“Get out of my home Lyserg. If you love her then leave with her I’m not stopping you.”, you growled in disgust as he dared to touch your wrist.

-“(Y/n) don’t do this!”, he warned his common sense suddenly returning as guilt flooded his heart.

-You slammed the door on his face and ignored his cries for you, he knew what he had done and you’d be a fool to even consider forgiving him.

-Your patience had run out and it would never return.

-Doesn’t think much of your simple words and continues his enjoyment with the stranger he’s picked up until he realizes your words actually meant something.

-He’s the most yandere and possessive of all the boys.

-Even as you’re crying in pure anger and humility he simply brushes you off and tells you that it’s your fault for walking in when you shouldn’t have.

-When you actually somehow succeed in leaving he’s furious, burning not only the wench that he cheated on you with but also the follower that was supposed to stand guard over you.

-Seeks you out mercilessly killing anyone that stands in his way.

-“Should’ve expected that you would leave me just like everyone else.”, he’d growl feeling sorry for himself.

Yoh: “Since when are you so fond of each other? I remember Y/N that you’ve been scared of him?”

You: “Oh, yeah. But you know, after several times, I am getting used seeing and talking to ghosts, hahaha! Moreover I wanna know more about the age of samurai!”

Amidamaru: “It is a pleasure, Y/N, to tell you more about it.”

Yoh: “Oh, that’s so great...” *walks off’

Amidamaru: “Master Yoh?!”

You: “Huh? Weird...”

So apparently it’s Shaman King’s 20th anniversary. Which means I’ve been thinking about the series for several days and need to type out my thoughts about it otherwise I’m going to be stuck in this brain hole for the next 2 weeks until another series briefly distracts me.

I’m going to throw this under a “read more” and be warned that I may touch on some mild to slightly spicy spoilers.

I just want to start this short essay off by stating that Shaman King is one of my all time favourite manga series. It was one of the first 4kids anime I watched on Saturday mornings when I was like...8 and was the second manga series I rediscovered when I was 13 (the first was One Piece) and the first series I finished (sort off since the series has 2 endings but I’ll cover that later). It’s one of the few manga series where I periodically reread from start to finish every few years and whenever I finish reading it think “Man, I love this”. 

Is the series perfect? No, there are some obvious flaws in the mangaka’s design of one of the main characters (who’s African-American) and the Patch Tribe (a fictional North American Indigenous Tribe that’s hella VITAL to the plot). The characters themselves are good multi-dimensional beings, but how they’re drawn would definitely not have flown had the series been released in modern day. 

However, the series has a lot going for it in terms of its characters and the reoccurring themes in the narrative. So let’s dive in shall we?

The Main Characters:

1. Asakura Yoh is the main protagonist of the series. Like many shounen protagonists, his dream is to essentially become the greatest “x” ever. In this series that title is the “Shaman King”, who is basically a god-like figure who has beaten all the other “world’s greatest” shamans in this massive tournament that takes place once every 500 years. However, our boy Yoh deviates from other shounen protagonists because his initial motivation is that he’s lazy and figures out that if he becomes the Shaman King, he won’t have to work and can just “chill out” for the rest of his life. His later motivation comes into play when he sees all the crazy folks fighting in the tournament and thinks “yikes, probably shouldn’t let these people be given this ultimate cosmic power”. 

What’s most interesting about this protagonist is while he is undoubtedly a “good” person, he seems to fall under the category of “neutral”. Despite his grand ambition, he wouldn’t be considered an “ambitious” person. Heck, when he meets someone that has a better reason for becoming the Shaman King he almost quits on the spot. He’s content to just go with the flow and see where it spits him out in life. Practically nothing fazes him and his easy-going nature unnerves his uptight allies and foes. However his greatest strength is his single core belief that “anyone who can see spirits can’t be all bad” and that philosophy allows him to befriend pretty much every character in the series, “good” and “bad”.

2. Kyoyama Anna is Yoh’s fiance and one of my all time favourite female characters. She would sell you for a corn chip and stab you without warning. She’s tough and straightforward and terrifies every character who meets her. Yoh promised her that if he becomes Shaman King she’ll be taken care of for the rest of her life and dammit she’s wants that good life. So she acts like his coach and puts him through her “torture training” because if it were up to him he would nap all day. Despite her clear personality differences with Yoh, they genuinely love each other and trust and respect each other. There’s no drama between them and I live for that good relationship goals.

(Note, the next few characters are going to have shorter descriptions because spoilers and I can’t NOT talk about them because I love them) 

3. Oyamada Manta is Yoh’s best friend. He can see spirits but isn’t a Shaman. He’s a nerd that freaks out pretty easily but as he becomes closer with Yoh, he becomes braver. He’s kind of used for exposition since he’s not from a shaman family or background. Probably cannot legally say fuck.

4. Tao Ren: antagonist turned protagonist. Goes through some incredible character development and redemption without completely compromising the core of his character. Acts somewhat as Yoh’s rival. Arrogant and hot-headed with a snarky attitude. Would order a single black coffee with a car full of kids at a McDonald’s drive through.

5. Horohoro Usui: lovable idiot but also hecking strong and goes from 0 to 100 real quick if you fuck with him. From the Ainu tribe (Northern Japanese Indigenous Tribe). Loves nature and snowboarding. 

6. Lyserg Diethel: a relatively level-headed British boy who is out for revenge against the guy who killed his parents. Definitely a “looks like a cinnamon bun but will actually kill you”. Has a conflicting friendship with Yoh as their personal philosophies don’t match up at all. 

7. Chocolove McDonald: an African American shaman. As previously stated, his character design didn’t really age well. The mangaka drew him with big lips and a big nose. In the North American manga, he’s somewhat censored (they downplayed the lip thing but erasing the lines between his lips and the rest of his face. Looks a little bit better but still a bit yikes). Initially introduced as a comic relief character but once you get into his backstory and as the story progresses, he’s a pretty grounded character who’s just trying to make up for the awful stuff he’s done. Out of the 5 main male characters, he’s formally stated to be the strongest and most well-balanced out of all of them. He’s a character that I love more with every reread.

Main antagonists:

Hao: Introduced once the Shaman Fight starts. A bit sadistic and playful. Has reincarnated himself twice trying to become the Shaman King. Has killed tons of characters without remorse. Doesn’t really care about anyone and wants to kill off humanity because he hates humans. 

The X-Laws: an extremist group formed with the sole goal of taking down Hao. To them, justice is absolute. They don’t believe in second chances or redemption. Their goal is for their leader to become Shaman King, kill Hao, and purge the world of “evil”. The main protagonists don’t like this group AT ALL.

Reoccurring themes:

Consequences: One of my favourite things about this manga is that every action has a consequence and no character is safe. Character was redeemed? Too bad, their past is coming for them and doesn’t care that they’re a good guy now. Got revenge on another group? Well that other group is coming for you to get revenge for your revenge. As Yoh states: Violence only brings about more violence. 

Forgiveness: this series is big on characters learning to forgive themselves for what they’ve done or forgiving others for not living up to their expectations. Forgiveness plays a large role in almost every character’s development. 

Mortality: In a series about ghosts and death, this theme was inevitable. What is interesting is that at the end game of the series, the main characters mourn the fact that they’ve become desensitized to the casual violence of their new lives and that they can continue to fight even after watching their friend be brutally murdered in front of them without pausing to take it in. 

Other cool things:

Shaman King has two endings: the original ending and the true ending. The original ending is a cliffhanger for when the magazine that was publishing it went under and the mangaka had to quickly wrap up the series because he wasn’t sure if he’d get the chance to actually finish it. The true ending was when another publishing company picked up the series a few years later, which allowed the creator to publish the last 15-ish chapters and write the intended ending he’d been working on.

There are 2 versions of the series: the original and the redraw. The original version treats readers to the manga’s visual transformation from beginning to end. The style of chapter 1 is drastically different from that of the last chapter. This is the version you’d find in the North America releases. The second version is the redraw. The mangaka redrew the entire series in his polished art style from start to finish, to my knowledge little was changed plot wise.

This essay kind of went a bit all over the place but the bottom line is that I love this series. I love its weird integration of philosophy and religion from around the world. I love it’s visual transformation. I love that the characters are flawed and can’t be truly placed in the traditional shounen character tropes. I love that the female characters aren’t over-sexualized. I love that the series blurs the line between what’s good and bad. And I love how the plot unfolds and keeps me coming back to reread it and fall in love all over again.

I love Shaman King.
