ylfa is trans i'm sure of it now
i dont have a huge knowledge of how names and all that shit works, but i've read a shit ton of norse and norse-adjacent mythology and history, and i know how the last names work
a last name ending in -son means that the person with the name is the son of that person (duh)
a last name ending in -dottir (or -dotr i think sometimes) means that the person with the name is the daughter of that person
ylfa's grandmother's name being "Jottensdottir" (see below) means that this family likely follows that format
Tumblr media
therefore, ylfa snorgellson was probably named as a son but now presents and prefers femininity.

Ylfa's grandma's surname is Jottensdottir
For Scandinavian (most commonly Icelandic) surnames the suffix -son means "son of" and -dottir means "daughter of"
And to me, "Jotten" sounds a lot like "Jötunn" aka, the word for GIANTS in Norse mythology!!

Ylfa’s surname is Snorgelsson, but Grandma’s surname, according to the visual, is Jottensdottir. 👀
Then again, it’s probably not an intentional choice, and it’s clear in the Emily v. Brennan interaction that Brennan sees Grandma as mom’s mom.
My knowledge of names in Iceland is limited to Buzzfeed Unsolved, though.

Hi! I'm Icelandic!
So what this actually implies about Ylfa is that she is a second generation immigrant from Fantasy Iceland to somewhere that uses a different naming system (read: anywhere else in the world).
It's true that names ending in -son mean you're male here and names ending in -dóttir mean you're female. However, Icelandic trans people usually change these to coincide with their new names. (The nonbinary -bur ending has also emerged.)
What this post, and most posts on this, are missing though, is that it literally means son and daughter. Your last name is indicative of usually your dad's first name, and then -son or -dóttir. So if your dad is named Jón and you're a girl then your last name is Jónsdóttir – literally "Jón's daughter". (I actually changed mine to my mom'sname when I was 20 to reflect being raised by a single mom.) And what the posts are also missing is that Icelandic people who move abroad usually don't keep doing this, and instead their last names freeze — this is what the names Johnson and Anderson and other such names actually are, originally. And Ylfa having such a name implies her FATHER is named Something Snorgelsson.
It also weirdly implies there's a grandpa out there named Snorgell, which is wack because that's not a name and it is my only pet peeve about this whole thing. Snorri and Þorkell are both names. No names end in -gell though. Argh.
Also, the grandma is named Jottensdottir, which sounds like they were aiming for Jötunn and missed a lil bit. Jötunn is a specific type of giant, so that might be a clue on future plot points.
Ok I know I'm probably not the only one but:
Ylfa trans headcannon.

Based on what I know about Icelandic last names - I'm not an expert.
