I kinda wondered if the .hack//sign soundtrack songs were written in Japanese first and then translated into English for their vocalists — as far as I'm aware no Japanese language version of those songs exist, the original show had those songs in English.

It seems like no, they were always in English (shout out to an extremely old school fan website):

I was originally writing “obsession” as the ending theme instead of the opening. I was going to write English lyrics first and rewrite them into Japanese later on. The melody, however, didn’t match Japanese lyrics. And I thought the melody was suitable for an opening , far from an ending. I worried, “As this is a Japanese anime, isn’t an English song good?”. But the director said “All right” very easily. Then “Yasashii Yoake”, which we were first going to use as the opening, was used as the ending.

Q: Last year at Anime Expo, Kouichi Mashimo (Director of .hack//Sign) was a Guest of Honor. At his panel, he was asked why English was used for the opening song of .hack.//Sign. He answered that if it had been in Japanese, it would have been too profane. Do you agree with that?

Kajiura: When I got the offer, the song was originally in English. So I created the song, I handed it to the Director, and his response was “It’s great, let’s go with that.” So we just went from there. The melody was easier if the lyrics were in English rather than Japanese.

It's interesting because the prosody of the music actually fits mora rather than syllables, so it has a strange quality in English, not quite uncanny, just different.

I guess they performed it live, which would've made me cry in 2004:
