a get to know you better meme
tagged by @zozobruh - Thank you! <333
do you make your bed? No. I do turn turn up the blanket so it can air out but that's it.
what's your favourite number? There's 3, and then 9, then 12, then 16 (but only because that's the day of the month I was born), then 21 (for non-SKAM reasons actually), then 27. 3 is the dominant theme. I like to do things in a set of three, but not compulsively. There's a bit of a system to and a whole story behind the numbers. I could go on a whole spiel. It also goes back to me playing around with words and syllables when I was around 8. I used to collect words with 9 letters.
what is your job? Don't have one.
If you could go back to school would you? What school? Elementary? No thanks. Also not secondary. Or night school. Regular school does not work for me, too autistic and the system too... well, a system. People are assholes, teachers included. Most of my schooling was done via distance learning and I definitely don't want to go back to that either. But also, I am attending school right now (vocational school) and I intend to further my education afterwards. I'd really like to learn how to properly draft and construct patterns and/or acquire the master craftsmen certificate in tailoring (or however you say meinen Meister machen).
can you parallel park? I don't have a license and I hope to make it through life without having to learn how to drive.
a job you had that would surprise people? None.
do you think aliens are real? Earth being the only inhabited place seems unlikely. Though I highly doubt they are how we have pictured alien life forms.
can you drive a manual car? If I did have a license, I'd be able to since that is the norm in Germany.
what's your guilty pleasure? I don't know... really bad smut? I have horrendous taste in that, I really do.
tattoos? I love them on other people, from a single or a few to lots of skin being covered, and all kinds of styles. But I don't have any myself and I don't think I ever will. I just couldn't be bothered. Way too indecisive and uncertain to decide on a design, and then the work put into researching which artists are the best, nevermind that I am scared of needles. And then afterwards it won't look exactly how I pictured it, especially after a few years or even decades. Oh, and the price! I do admire them on other people but I just don't think it's for me, too much hassle and not enough passion for it. (But if I would get tattos, I suspect I would get an Against Me! quote tattooed. Something from True Trans Soul Rebel. And an AJJ one.)
favourite colour? Dark blue.
favourite type of music? *panicked screaming* I listen to way too many artists (or sometimes just a single song) from all over the world and from all kinds of genres. And while there are genres I really like, I rarely will listen to more than a few representatives. But I can say that right now I really enjoy late Soviet/90s Siberian punk (Yanka Dyagileva and Egor Letov).
do you like puzzles? Yep. I don't know who but someone on tumblr got me into online puzzles last summer. (They did a Jeff puzzle.) I like those.
any phobias? No proper phobias.
favourite childhood sport? I didn't really do sports. In fact I hated sports, still do. Worst of all was school sports class, I had a stomach ache every the evening before. But my family was active and we regularly went swimming, rock climbing, hiking. I did horseback riding for several years but it was therapeutic.
do you talk to yourself? In my mind yes, but rarely out loud.
what movie(s) do you adore? I adore Latin American movies though I can't say I have seen too many. (Quemar las naves, María, llena eres de gracia and El cielo dividido are my favourites.) I enjoy Nordic comedies, not just with Mads Mikkelsen but I really do like those. (The last one I watched was Riders of Justice though I really wouldn't classify it as comedy. It has comedic elements.) I like movies with open, ambiguous endings, ones that leave you a bit unsatisfied, ruminating, on edge. When they linger. I don't like it when movies make it easy for me. And above all else I adore Astrid Lindgren movies. I feel like so many conversations I have lead to me mentioning how much I love them but it's true. I really, really do.
coffee or tea? I don't (can't?) drink coffie and when I drink tea, then not black (or any other proper tea) but herbal and spiced tea.
first thing you wanted to be growing up? I think a teacher? I adored and really looked up to my elementary school teacher. I loved German and correcting texts so I wanted to be like her.

an interview with varya from CROSSPARTY & The Sextapes — a talk about psychedelic rock, thailand and cannabis
today's thorns of the future guest is varya, a vocalist and lyricist of one of the biggest russian witch-house bands, CROSSPARTY, as well as a vocalist and lyricist of The Sextapes, an electronic and indie duo. CROSSPARTY has been in the scene since 2012, and The Sextapes, technically since 2019. CROSSPARTY's first ever release was the "#SWAGHUNTER" LP, which was released through the Phantasma Disques label.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: how and when did you and uken start CROSSPARTY?
varya: At first, I need to tell you this story from the beginning. Uken wasn't the first musician in Crossparty. In 2012 the group was invented by Ilya Bespalov and me. Ilya is an electronic musician from my hometown Vladivostok. Before Crossparty i was singing in a punk-rock band named Cosmic Pirates. We were friends and one time we decided to try to create something together in an experimental electronic style. In 2014 Ilya decided to leave our band for personal reasons and I've asked Uken to join me. The rest is the story.
thorns of the future: what was your craziest experience at a live show?
varya: Every live show is a crazy experience in some way, you know. Sometimes it’s crazy in a good way, sometimes in a bad. I can tell you about my first live show in Moscow on WITCHOUT 2. It was crazy because I was very nervous and was stuck in a toilet 2 minutes before the show because the door locker was broken. Some guy in a waiting line broke the door and when I got out the show had already started and I needed to run to the stage while the first song was playing. Good that it was an instrumental track without a vox, but it was really hard to run through the crowd to be on time at the beginning of the second song and of course I was out of breath.
thorns of the future: tell us about your first ever live show.
varya: My first serious live show was when I was 15 with my punk-rock band Cosmic Pirates. Before them I was in a girl group called Cashew, but we didn’t do live shows. Guys from Cosmic Pirates heard my voice at a Cashew rehearsal and asked me to join them as a lead singer. At the first rehearsal they said to me that we have our first live show in 2 days. We wrote 2 new original songs with my lyrics and the rest of the songs were old. Everything was really good and the guys presented me like a new lead singer to their fans.
thorns of the future: what's your favourite CROSSPARTY song?
varya: Because all of Crossparty's songs it’s very personal and autobiographical, I love them all in different ways. But i can tell my Top-5: Cult, Suffocate, Lost Girls, Twins, Iamwar.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: recommend us some bands/artists that you like.
varya: I love different genres, especially the old kind of music. Psychedelic rock from the 60's, disco from the 70’- 80’s. I can tell that I am a huge fan of The Kills, Lady Gaga, Johny Mitchell, Blondie and Yanka Dyagileva. I think that it’s my Top-5.
thorns of the future: what is "cult" about?
varya: I wrote this song about relationships between me, myself and i. It’s about closing myself from everyone and making love with the darkness and pain inside me. When I wrote it I was 16. At this age I was so lost inside, didn’t trust others, but at the same time I was confident with the things that I was doing. My life was not easy at this time, and I was struggling between love and hate.
thorns of the future: you're also a part of a band called "the sextapes" - can you tell us something about it?
varya: Razorz (EPILEPTICS) and I wanted to create something with “indie rock vibes from 2009” and I think that we did it. I hope that in the future we can make more music. Now we have some problems because we live on different continents and both have a lot of work. But soon we will release some new songs, we are now working on it.
thorns of the future: what is "splinters" about?
varya: Splinters it’s definitely about love, you know like explosions, glitters, butterflies and all that stuff. But at the same time it’s not about teenage love, i think it’s more about when your heart was already broken and you now have only splinters of it, but feel love like it's the first time and ready for your splinters to shine.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: are you planning to release any new songs soon?
varya: Yes. Now I'm working on a couple collaborations, and preparing to start a new project soon. I’m not released anything for a long long time because at this time I'm walking through the immigration process. I've moved to Thailand and do business here with my husband. Starting something new it’s always difficult, especially starting a new life in another country.  But now things are getting better and I have the inspiration, time and mental health to start working again on new music.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: any artists or genres that you don't like?
varya: I’m not a fan of Russian rap but I can't tell if it's bad or that I hate it. It’s still art, but kinda weird for me. But what I really hate - Russian propagandist music - is really a piece of shit.
thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
varya: Getting married, I think (just joking). I've done a lot of crazy and risky things in my life, I cannot tell you just one. All my life it has been a crazy journey, and sometimes doing some risky things it’s very nervous and anxious. For now I think that moving to another country where i’ve never been before was risky - but it was the right decision at the same time.
thorns of the future: is there a country you would never like to live in?
varya: I think I couldn't live in a muslim country. I am a punk bisexual independent woman that loves freedom of self expression in each point of my life. Just because of the rules and laws of this, it's not for me. And now i can't live in Russia, because of the war and stupid laws. It’s just not safe and I don't want to just sit and stare at how our government is ruining the future of millions of people in Ukraine and Russia.
Tumblr media
thorns of the future: what's your favourite drug or favourite type of alcohol?
varya: I love any type of Alcohol haha. It’s true. I have a high-functioning alcoholism type and I really really love to drink something. I’m not using drugs so much for now, I was addicted to amphetamines 7 years ago for 1,5 years and now i’m careful with it. Our business is in a cannabis industry and I don't even smoke. But if I want to I can get high, I do not prohibit it to myself.
thorns of the future: is there anything you want to say to your fans?
varya: Stay true and love yourself as much as you can do. Peace for you, and thank you for your support!
we would like to thank varya for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that’s all for now.

It's genuinely sad to me that some non-Russian comrades here love and appreciate Soviet/Russian punk and post-punk more than the younger generation in my own country.
I don't even know who upsets me more, kids (actually one of them is just a couple years younger than me so it baffles me even more) who don't even know who Letov or Tsoy are, or the ones who say their songs sound shitty or make no sense. You have no idea what you're talking about, do you, you little tiktok addicted cunt.
sorry that was mean of me.
Here's a beautiful song by Yanka Dyagileva, one of the most prominent figures of the Siberian underground scene. She wasn't the most public person and her tragic early passing is riddled with conspiracies, but the most important thing about her is the raw talent in her poetry and the instantly recognizable voice.
youtube
I have never ever heard anything that could sound like soviet punk. And since similar things sometimes are evoked by much more modern music on the post soviet scene, reaching as far as to synth-pop and so many different genres across not just Russia alone, I think it's that thing we actually do carry in ourselves despite having very different views on our countries, on USSR, on our past and present.
It's that same feeling the panel apartment buildings can't help but evoke. That fucking doomer aesthetic if you wanna call it that.
It might not be the most beautiful and clean and positive thing in the world, but it feels so much more patriotic (even though I'm not and I don't think I ever will be) than whatever that hitler jugend looking lapdog popstar they're shoving down our throats is spewing. It's the March snow with black dots on its spongy surface. It's the foggy cigarette breath under yellow windows of panel houses. It's the liminal underground passage with a basking guitarist singing Letov's words that are jumping off the echoy walls.
November splin's getting to me, isn't it.
UPD. I am not touching on the contents of soviet punk/post-punk deliberately, because there's too much to unpack and we would spend the whole day here. Today is just vibes appreciating day.

My Sorrow is Luminous - Yanka Dyagileva
My Sorrow Is Luminous I keep repeating - for ten times and over and over again: Nobody knows how fucking bad I feel now And the TV is hanging from the ceiling And no one knows how fucking bad I feel now And I'm so goddamn sick and tired of it all That it makes me wanna start This poem again, it's so sad that I Repeat again: how fucking bad I feel now
(not my translation, song + og can be found through link)

i had a dream i went to a community art class thing and we were given a prompt of two words and told to paint something in an hour off of that. mine was "fragile" and "radiance" and it reminded me of a yanka dyagileva song (i started humming it and someone else in the class did too) i tried doing a portrait of her, but i wasnt sure if we were allowed to look at ref on our phones and the sketch kept coming out bad. so i did some streetlights against a night sky instead

Я неуклонно стервенею с каждым смехом, (I become more of a bitch with every laugh,) С каждой ночью, с каждым выпитым стаканом. (With every night, with every emptied glass.) Я заколачиваю двери, отпускаю злых голодных псов (I board up the door, release the vicious hungry hounds) С цепей на волю. (Freely from their chain.) Некуда деваться: (There’s nowhere to go:) Нам остались только сбитые коленки, (All we have left are our bruised knees,) Я неуклонно стервенею с каждым разом. (I’m becoming more of a bitch, every instant.)
Я обучаюсь быть железным продолжением ствола, (I’m learning to be the steel extension of the barrel,) Началом у плеча приклада. (The start of the butt on my shoulder.) Сядь, если хочешь, посиди со мною рядышком на лавочке – (Sit, if you want, sit down beside me on the bench -) Покурим, глядя в землю. (Let’s smoke, gazing at the ground.) Некуда деваться: (There’s nowhere to go:) Нам достались только грязные дороги. (All that we reach are muddied roads.) Я неуклонно стервенею с каждым часом. (I’m becoming more of a bitch, every hour.)
Я неуклонно стервенею с каждой шапкой милицейской, (I become more of a bitch with every policeman’s cap,) С каждой норковою шапкой. (With every hat of mink fur.) Здесь не кончается война, не начинается весна, (Here war never comes to an end, spring never begins,) Не продолжается детство. (Nor does childhood last.) Некуда деваться: (There’s nowhere to go:) Нам остались только сн и разговоры. (All we have left are dreams and conversations.) Я неуклонно стервенею с каждым шагом, (I’m becoming more of a bitch with every step,) Я неуклонно стервенею с каждым часом, (I’m becoming more of a bitch, every hour,) Я неуклонно стервенею с каждым разом. (I’m becoming more of a bitch, every instant.)

Yanka Dyagileva was very beautiful and talented but it’s unfortunate that she played with Egor Letov, one of the founding members of the National Bolshevik Party, back when he was in the band Grazhdanskaya Oborona. the entire siberian post-punk scene was infested with fascists and reactionaries, though what can you expect from perestroika. psilocybin is simply not an appropriate socialist drug

Question Tag Game Thingy
I was tagged by @die-schwanenkoenigin - thank you for always tagging me. Current book I’m reading: Technically Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann, it's been the same answer for almost two years now. Very much enjoying it (though I have no clue why), but also very much not actually reading it 99% of the time. However, my laptop needs to be repaired during which I will have to make do with a desktop computer which does not go well with me spending most of my time home in bed. So I should really dedicate that time to non-digital media and make some progress with the book.
Last song I listened to: Придёт вода - Yanka Dyagileva
Currently watching: Nothing really. I finished the new hbomberguy video this morning. I got halfway through Love at the End of the World on GagaOOLala last month and I really should pick it up again before my subscription runs out.
Current fic I’m reading: Just the new chapters for fics I am subscribed to. This morning I was up way too early, so I could read the latest insert cash or select payment type chapter.
Next on my watchlist: Cherry Magic - I am so excited for Saturday!
Current obsession: No active media obsession right now. Well, I suppose we can count Jeff Satur, that fucking menace. And real life stuff, lots of exhausting, not-fun obsessing on that front. I'd much rather it be about a silly gay show though. tagging: @imminentinertia @hummingbooks @scarefox @sorry-bonebag @lady-guts @ilovetextingandscones
