Well, maybe nothing went wrong on the mission. But something went wrong with Summer. Or at least, something had changed in her, from what Yang could gather.

But she could understand why Raven was upset. She had trusted Summer, and Summer had clearly betrayed that trust. And hadn't done anything to make up for it in the years since.

"I suppose that explains why there were 2 questions left when we got it." Although... "Ozpin originally lied and said they had all been used. Or maybe he thought Summer used them all, who knows." Yang had a feeling he'd been lying though. He hadn't wanted them to ask any questions, that much had been clear.

She watched Raven stalk around the room, upset with herself still all these years later. "Mom... you trusted someone you cared about, and who was supposed to care about you. That's on her, not you. She's the one who took advantage."

The more she learned about Summer, the less she liked her. "...what did she ask, then?"

On a fucking whim? Maybe. Raven resolved a long time ago to stop making herself crazy trying to figure out what went on in that woman's head, and the only answer she could give was a jagged shrug. "It didn't," she said wanly, "is the thing. I– I can feel—if one of my—I know when someone I… have a bond to is in danger. It's not as clear if you have others around you but–"

If she didn't watch herself, she'd end up babbling in circles just to avoid finishing this story. Raven gulped. "That's how we all knew you weren't—dead," she offered. "Um. So, we just sat there. For hours. Nothing happened and the only read I could get was 'she's safe' and I—" a brittle chuckle. "—for a while there I started to wonder if somehow she'd actually done it. And then…"

Her shoulders slumped.

"…suddenly," Raven said, tone bitter, "she was in Mistral. I figured out afterward that Salem must have transported her there, but at the time I– didn't really question…" She trailed off. "I was just relieved she'd gotten out of there in one piece. When I went through to find out what happened, Summer—tch."

The pent-up nervous energy over-spilled her self-control at last, and Raven swung on her heel to prowl across the room, thumped the heel of her hand into the window sill.

"Something strange happened when she used her eyes, she said. Made it sound like some kind of freak magical anomaly that just conveniently happened to send her halfway around the world–" a bleak scoff. Raven tucked her chin against her shoulder, breathing out harshly, and muttered, "It was a fucking bullshit, obvious lie, but that woman can make anything sound true. I don't think any of us ever knew the real Summer Rose."

Lying snake.

"She told me she needed to use the relic. Just one question. It was right there; we had Gretchen, we could be in and out with no one the wiser. I—believed her. Like an idiot."

RWBY Volume 9 Ep 1 - A  Place of Particular Concern

I wanted to make this post before episode 2, but oh well - in my defense, I was sick. (I also haven’t watched episode 2 yet, so for me it still is “before”.)

I’ll try to be brief as well and just write down the stuff I really want to say. Don’t know if I’ll make a post like this for every episode either, depends on whether I’ll feel up for it. (Likely not, but I wanted to do it this time.)

- First things first: Aaah, RWBY is finally back! For me this is actually a first-time experience too, since I didn’t get into RWBY until Volume 8 was already almost over. (If I remember right the last few eps of Vol 8 were the first ones I actually watched “live” (or well, with a week’s delay)).

- As a whole, I’m a lot more relaxed about Volume 9 than I was about late Volume 8 (or than I am about Volume 10). Because we’re taking this detour in the Ever After (a good choice imo, since RWBY has so many characters by now that it can get a bit overwhelming), and the only named characters here are Team RWBY, Jaune, and Neo, I don’t have as much to get anxious about. My only faves here who could get hurt are Team RWBY, and since they’re the main characters I think they’ll be fine. My other faves are either not in the void (Cinder, Salem, Ilia) or already dead (Penny... don’t touch me I’m still not over it), so I think this volume is going to be comparatively easy on my nerves (now watch me eat my words as Team RWBY goes through hell...). (My little sisters’ faves are Jaune and Neo respectively, so I’ll see how they like this volume...)

- I wonder who the mysterious narrator in the beginning is. Well, we’ll find out. (But the last time we had a “mysterious narrator” she turned out to be very important, so...)

- Love how it wastes no time throwing us back into the Vol 8 ending from Ruby’s POV.

- Who’s voice is that calling “Ruby!” when she wakes up at the beach? Is that still Penny? Sounds more like Yang to me, but I’m really not sure.

- The two suns made me think of Star Wars.

- I love Little. (And I also like that Ruby being kind to a little mouse even while she’s going through a lot herself is what ends up freeing Weiss and Blake from the mice. Kindness is good and all that.)

- Interesting to know that cartoons exist on Remnant. Makes sense, though, they have TVs and all after all...

- Bit sad we didn’t get to see Weiss and Blake’s reunion. Also, is this the first time they’ve said the name “Gambol Shroud” out loud in the show?

- The way Weiss tells Blake “I’m really glad you’re okay”... Yeah, until just now she thought all of her teammates were dead. And she’s clearly still processing that Penny’s dead for real.

- Weiss cheering Blake on when she’s trying to get her weapon is adorable.

- Love how Ruby nudges her shoulder to wake Little up.

- “I can be your trusty guide” -> cut to them falling asleep. I love Little.

- “I don’t know if anyone else fell, no.” Oh, I just remembered again that none of Team RWBY know that Jaune is down here, too. They won’t look for him because they don’t know he’s here. And they might not run into him, either. So, what if they just straight up don’t meet him? I’ve even seen theories they might leave the Ever After without him since they don’t know... oh boy, I think something interesting is definitely in store for Jaune this volume.

- The Jabberwalker is terrifying and we definitely haven’t seen the last of them.

- That moment when Ruby wants to join the fight but the realizes she doesn’t have Crescent Rose anymore... yeah, based on the intro as well, I wonder if it’ll maybe take a while - maybe even the whole volume? - until Ruby gets Crescent Rose back.

- “I said I wasn’t done with you yet!” Oh... shout out to Barbara for how she voiced this line. Also, I’ve said it before: Yang is so badass. Thinks she’s dead, only has one arm, still goes afte the Jabberwalker.

- “Dammit! You weren’t supposed to be here!” The way her voice breaks here, oh gosh... Yang just wanted to protect Ruby, she was ready to sacrifice herself for Ruby, and to see now that it didn’t work as Ruby and the others still fell... let me give Yang a hug. (They might also have to talk about those self-sacrificial tendencies, because while I get the “protective big sister instinct” - you’re important too, Yang.)

- “If you thought we wouldn’t come for you, then you must have forgotten who raised me.” When I first heard this line, I thought Ruby meant Tai (and Summer) by this, but then I saw people say that she meant that Yang raised her and gosh... that’s both even sweeter and even more heartbreaking. (But also, Ruby... you didn’t actually “come for” Yang, you though she was dead and then you all fell into the void by accident. Not saying you wouldn’t have come for her if you’d known, but that’s not quite what happened.)

- I’ll be squeeling about that Bumbleby tackle-hug for the next few weeks, thanks for asking. The way Blake says “Yang” so softly, the way Yang touches her head and smiles... it’s perfect. Everything I wanted for their reunion and more.

(Also, I don’t want to get into negativity too much here, but it’s astounding how I’ve already seen the dumbest discourse ever over this scene. “Yang should have hugged Ruby instead; why would she care about someone more than her sister?” and similarly braindead takes... like WTF? Yang and Ruby literally had a really sweet sisterly moment right before this. Yang and Ruby have hugged before. Like, what kind of a braindead take is this? Are people who have siblings not allowed to also have significant others or other people they love and care about? Honestly, it’s just straight-up homophobia, let’s call it what it is. If this hug had happend between, say... Ren and Nora, after one of them thought the other was dead, literally no one would be grasping at straws to find something to complain about. No one would be calling it “ship baiting” or throwing fits. If it doesn’t bother you when it’s a man and a woman, but it does when it’s two women or two men - that’s homophobia. And a lot of the haters also seem to go down the whole “but it’s not canon” rabbithole and like... yes, it is. Just because Blake and Yang haven’t kissed or confessed their feelings out loud yet doesn’t make them not canon. They’re canonically in love, that much is explicitly clear. Deal with it or leave.)

- I like the build-up to Weiss telling everyone what happened (rule of 3 - when Blake and then later Ruby ask, she keeps saying they have to find Yang first and she’s not letting herself really process it either. But when they’re finally all together, Weiss finally allows herself to cry and tell them.

- Okay, time to let out my inner Nuts and Dolts shipper: WOW. The fact that Ruby just straight-up faints when she hears that Penny died. The fact that Weiss didn’t even finish speaking and Ruby already fainted... I’m so here for it! Look, I’m still heartbroken (and still in denial, hoping they’ll bring her back a second time), but if I have to deal with half of my ship being dead, then I at least want to see the other half have the most intense reaction possible to it. I want Ruby to grieve, I want Ruby to go through hell, I want her to just not be normal about this on any level. The intro already tells us that this is the “Ruby is depressed” volume, but I want that to be at least in large parts because of her grief for Penny. Ruby thought she’d lost Penny once, then she got her back, got even closer with her, fell in love with her, went through all of that trouble in Volume 8 to save her from the virus, only to find out she died anyways... yeah, I want Ruby to suffer about it and I’m so glad we’re getting that. (And in my perfect shipper-wish-fullfilment version I want Ruby to have some sort of “I loved her” line when talking about Penny later.)

- I like that Weiss left out Jaune’s exact role in Penny’s death and phrased it as “Jaune tried to help, but she sacrificed herself”. It’s not a lie and Weiss is being a good friend to Jaune by deciding that that part isn’t hers to tell. That being said, I want Ruby to go absolutely ballistic on Jaune when she finds out. I want her to blame Jaune, I want there to be a fight with tears and emotions and rage, I want it all. (To be clear, I’m not blaming Jaune, but I want Ruby to. Like I said, I want Ruby to not be normal about this. Let Ruby go apeshit over losing the girl she loves.)

- So wait, Ruby fainted and they just let her lie there? (Okay, to be fair, we don’t see what happend while she was out.)

- Okay, so Team RWBY currently don’t know that Jaune fell, that Salem has the relic, or how everyone in vacuo is doing. Weiss still saw Winter become the winter maiden and most people get to vacuo though, right? 

- Side-note, what about all the random citizens who fell into the void when Cinder set off that first explosion? Team RWBY knows about them - are they going to at least try and save them too, or is this supposed to be a “they’re background characters, so let’s hope the viewers have forgotten about them” thing?

- Oh, I have feelings about Yang asking Ruby if she’s alright and Ruby brushing it off to talk about Neo instead. I hope WBY will realize that Ruby’s going through it right now.

- Yay for Blake taking charge and coming up with a plan. She’s come so far.

- Yang thought she was dead... don’t touch me.

- “I think we’re in a fairytale.” Oh, lovely line to end the first episode on.

Now for the opening:

- Love the song, first of all!

- That opening shot of Jaune and Neo! Jaune still with the broken sword and tears... Yeah, he’s not going to have a good time this volume either. Likely there’s going to be a lot of wrestling with guilt over Penny. Also, as some people have pointed out, there are quite a few parallels between Jaune and Neo. They’ve both lost someone they love (Pyrrha and Roman), they’re both keeping a tragic keepsake of that person (Pyrrha’s red fabric and Roman’s hat), they both (arguably for Jaune?) want revenge for that person’s death... yeah, will be interesting to see if this volume does anything with that.

- That montage of everyone growing more confident while Ruby receeds and becomes more depressed, the part where it’s just Ruby crying, then that montage of everyone else walking and getting faster while Ruby walks behind and gets slower and slower and hangs her head... Yeah, this is “Ruby has depression” -  the volume, and I’m really looking forward to that for several reasons. First of all because I feel like Ruby is ironically one of the less developed characters on the show and I can’t wait for her to finally have the time to get that development. (This is another reason why I think it was a good call to have a smaller cast this this volume.) And secondly because I’ve been struggling with what’s likely depression and I think seeing that represented in a show I like would feel really healing.

- I would have never noticed the “no 11th hour” thing with Jaune on my own - props to all of you for picking up on that!

- Well that part with Ruby on the bridge isn’t creepy at all.

- Neo’s sitting behind a table sipping tea while wearing Roman’s hat and that’s when it hit me that she’s the mad hatter. Brilliant!

- Also, I wouldn’t have picked up on Jaune being the white rabbit (who’s always too late!) myself, but I love it. Also, this is another parallel between him and Neo and I wonder what their stories will have to do with each other this volume.

- Also interesting how we see both Ruby and Neo turning into... was her name Alyx? - well, our Alice, “the girl who fell through the world”, you know who I mean. Just like Jaune and Neo have parallels, Ruby has paralles with both of them as well (she’s also just lost the redhead she loves and might also keep a tragic keepsake of Penny’s).

Okay, one personal prediction I want to make: So far, every one of the last RWBY volumes had one character in particular stand out and steal the show for me, my “fave of the volume”, so to speak. For Volume 5 it was Ilia, for Volume 6 it was Salem, for Volume 7 it was Penny, and for Volume 8 it was Cinder. And based on the first episode and opening I think that for Volume 9 it’s going to be Ruby. That whole going through depression and mourning Penny thing... yeah, I think Ruby is who I’ll feel for the most here and I’m ready for it. Make this her volume, she deserves it. (I definitely also hope for some amazing Bumbleby moments, tough.)

So there is the idea of post Vol 9 them finding Summer locked away by Salem, but there is also Prof. Arc's AU as well.

So I need to redo Prof. Arc because one change I wanna make is this, essentially Jaune knowing Summer, who has just learned about Salem can see that she's acting fishy.

Tai doesn't recognize it because he's dealing with the offer to start teaching at Signal to better support Ruby and Yang. So Summer goes off, and her and Raven are about to leave...

Only for Jaune to be there, waiting, with his Team (ARGT) Raven and Summer could beat Jaune alone without trying to kill him, they could manage a draw with any two members of said team... Jaune wasn't part of said duo (Aura Amp is just that broken)

But against the four of them... Their helpless, and Jaune ask Summer what exactly she was planning. With a Very angry look in his eyes, because her leaving with Raven could only really mean she was abandoning her family.

And Summer moves to speak up and explain, only for Raven to try and Run! slice open a portal and leap... Or she would've if Glynda wasn't holding her in place!

A single order from Jaune.

"Gretchen! Peach! WIPE. THEM. OUT!!!" Unable to move, to seal her portal two of the strongest Huntresses she knows jump into them, into the heart of the Branwen Tribe! Aurically amplified!

There was no way her tribe would survive, so she uses her maiden powers. Much to the other three's shock, and tries again to move into the portal to save her tribe!

But Jaune, Jaune has always been a threat, he may not win a maiden without the element of surprise, but he could sure as hell fight one long enough for back up... And with Glynda, aurically amplified... Not even a maiden stood a chance.

There is no mercy given what Raven having those powers implies, what she must've done to the previous Maiden, and what they know she has done with her tribe to far too many innocents!

the only reason she is being spared, is because Jaune and his team, Ozpin and surely all of STRQ two would call in any and every favor they could for her to live.

So he collars her with a aura suppressant the gorget a new piece of Atlesian tech that would leave the bandit queen helpless unless it's owner allowed her to use aura. And while she could use her Maiden powers, might be able to escape.

She knew it was too late, her tribe would be near decimated now and Jaune made it clear if she took a step outta line he would make sure Salem would know all about her being a Maiden. In the end... He knew Raven was a coward, and now she was a coward with only one family left.

A family he was going to make sure had both it's mothers, as a Arc he had a sworn duty to make sure families remained whole and happy. And that would start with his punching his dumb fellow leader in the head for coming up with such a stupid idea! He was gonna scald her for a hour straight before dragging her ass back to Tai to apologize with the Xiao-Long's first runaway wife!

Since Jaune already has Willow and Kali thirsting after him, would Summer and Raven join in thirsting over him too? Because personally I find Jaune with Raven very hot considering the dynamic that Jaune is a lovable ball of sunshine and Raven just loves being with him and lets him take charge in their relationship while she is a total semen demon for Jaune

Not gonna lie, whenever I do get to Summer and Raven again unless it's for a commission it's gonna be centered around her and Summer making it up to Tai for all the shit they pulled on him by running away together as the three hottest Signal Teachers.

But of course I'd need to make a good Taiyang model first before that

90 with Blake and Yang?

Okay so this isn't exactly 90, but it's inspired by it because vol 8 and those words just kinda throttled me by the throat and forced me to write this hypothetical of the beginning of vol 9. Angst abound WOO

-------- When Blake hits the sand, her instincts pull from her in the last dredges of her semblance. The shadow clone explodes out from beneath her and catapults her across the beach. She's too tired to catch herself, crashing into the sand and carving a path parallel to the waterline.

She lays there with a high pitched ringing in her ears. Coughing up sand. Too numb to cry.

She lays there, staring up at a cotton candy sky long enough to let the ocean lap at her boots. She lays there, refusing to close her eyes. She can't close her eyes, because in every flash of darkness there is the void below and Yang's outstretched hands are dissolving in nothing and Blake can't fucking reach her-

She's numb, but the sand is warm beneath her body. Her eyes drift, looking out across the beach she'd somehow ended up in.

Wait.

Blake's entire body screams in protest as she bolts upright. Her hands pat across her body, tracking sand into the zippers and leather of her suit, landing to a stop at her cheeks and temples.

The high pitched ringing turns into the rapid hum of her heartbeat.

She breathes to no one but herself, "I'm alive. I'm alive?"

Almost like a hand is guiding her chin, she looks away from the ocean. Still holding herself, stunned.

There's an entire tropical forest making its way to the waterline. Littered with long palm fronds swaying in a breeze that doesn't exist. A cliffside jagged with broken rocks and weeds backs the palm tree forest, and above it looms... A massive, nebulous, kapok tree.

Blake's seen kapok trees in Menagerie before, but they're nothing like this. It had to be taller than a CCT Tower.

She looks away because it makes her dizzy just trying to gauge its height.

Her eyes land on the hilt of her sword, sticking up out of the sand. The ribbon, singed at the end, is coiled about the magazine.

She manages to stagger to her feet, stumbling the first few steps. Her shoulders curl forwards, she's hunched like there's weighted hooks dangling off her collarbones.

Her long fingers wrap around the handle. The rest of the black katana emerges from the sand. The gold in the middle glares at her from a sourceless sun.

She's slow to react to it.

She's still drowning in grief.

But there's something in her that helped pull her up. Something that keeps her standing. She stares at the gold mending.

She catches a glimpse of her reflection in the gleam.

Her eyes widen.

Blake fell into the same void as Yang. If she was alive, then that meant-

The weapon is collapsed and slung to her back in a blink. Her footprints leave deep divots in the sand until she's sprinting over the beach towards the forest. She clambers over a white rock shaped like a whale and pushes her aching body to springboard off of it, nearly losing her footing on the landing and crashing into a palm trunk in her haste. She grips it like a lifeline.

Her lungs fill with the first full breath of air she's taken since Yang fell, and she screams into the trees with everything in her body.

"YAAAAANG!"

It's screamed with every ounce of herself that would've jumped if Weiss hadn't been there. Every last drop of her liquified heart that didn't drain from her when she couldn't see Yang's eyes. Every last piece of her that refused to live without that sunny smile.

Her nails dig into the trunk and she has to wheeze into the bark to catch her breath. Hollowed to a husk, her exhausted body falls to its knees.

And all around her, her voice echoes, and echoes. There's no birdsong, or wind to disrupt it. It's just her, echoing off the rocks and trees.

Her cavernous soul pulls down to her toes.

She can do nothing but cry.

Her head bunts into the bark of the tree, her body crumbling into a fetal crouch. Her fingers dig into the sand and soil for dear life. The sobs wrack her body harder and harder. She just lets it happen.

There's no one to see her die a little anyway.

She covers her head with her hands like a child hiding from pain. She has trouble hiccupping air into her lungs. It hurts to breathe. Like someone's sitting on her chest and laughing about it.

Little bites of Yang's name twist between her teeth, each one tasting more like ash than the last.

Blake doesn't know how long she stays there.

But she knows exactly who touches her and calls her name.

She's afraid to look.

She doesn't want to dream of her.

She doesn't want any cheap imitation of Yang her burnt out brain can conjure. She wants her. The jokes, the laughter, the understanding, the warmth. Her ever addicting sun.

Blake loves Yang too much to ever be content with a copy.

Her ears are ringing again. She can't tell if it's her heartbeat or if it's someone trying to speak to her. She's afraid of the latter. Because she knows that warmth on her shoulder like she knows her body is at its limit.

But like everything she's done since Beacon, it's easier to face her fears with Yang in mind. So it's with a strangled, hiccupping gasp, that she tilts her head to peer through her fingers.

Blake opens her eyes, and there's a miracle staring back at her.

Yang's jacket is nowhere to be seen, one of her overall straps loose and bunched up near her hip where she kneels. Her hair is pulled up off the back of her neck into a messy bun, tied with a strip of palm frond.

Her hands are gentle as ever, brushing the sand from Blake's feline ears carefully. The buttery gold metal of her right hand brushes over Blake's hands still locked over her head. Yang's perfect, plush lips are moving slow.

"Blake? Hey, can you hear me?"

She's calling Blake's name.

Blake can hear her.

She can hear her.

Blake's hands slip from her head, and she slowly cracks the grief from her spine, sitting up. She stares with wide, wondrous eyes. She can't make her voice work.

Yang's eyebrows furrow in concern.

"Blake?"

Blake's hands drift, gently pressing into Yang's cheeks. The skin under her fingertips is warm. Flushed with tropical heat. More freckled than Blake last remembers.

And it's real.

She's - "Real," Blake croaks, swallowing hard. She's swallowed so much sand she's sure she's becoming the beach, but she repeats herself anyway. "You're real."

"Uh, yeah," Yang gives a little laugh, "I'm real. What-"

Blake lunges forward with enough force to knock their teeth together. Yang's voice sounds from the back of her throat, hiking up an octave in surprise. Blake doesn't give a fuck, she kisses her like she meant to two weeks ago. Two days ago. Two years ago. Time means nothing to her. Her hands pull at the overalls, and she sinks her teeth into Yang's lower lip.

And suddenly Yang's pulling her close, a breathy gasp passed between them. Her warm freckled hands come up to frame Blake's face like she's precious.

It's enough to break her a third time.

She cracks a sob into Yang's mouth. Those gentle hands cradle her even closer, a soft, "C'mere baby," brushed across her lips.

Blake is pulled into a crushing hug. Her body aches with the pressure, and it is...

The absolute sweetest pain she's ever endured.

I did a top 10 at the start of Vol.7 and felt like updating it since Vol.7 (RWBY’s best volume to date by far) has changed my opinions quite a bit.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

- Sun Wukong, Pyrrah Nikos, Roman Torchwick and Mercury Black: Still love these characters, but their slots on the list have been taken.

- Clover Ebi: “Good luck.”

ONTO THE LIST!

#10: Qrow Branwen: Qrow was amazing in Vol.7, his new VA makes his character richer than ever and I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s done next with him.

#9: Maria Calavera: Maria didn’t do too much in Vol.7, but just having thought about it more, The Grim Reaper has been an utterly delightful addition to the cast who ranks among my favorites.

#8: Ruby Rose: After six volumes of mixed characterization and frequently not feeling like the protagonist, Vol.7 has cemented Ruby as a well-rounded character and an excellent leading woman.

#7: Penny Polendina: In the early volumes, I liked Penny well enough, but Vol.7 has made me come to love her so much. Her personal growth and her relationship with Winter were both highlights of the volume.

#6: Neopolitan: :P

#5: Weiss Schnee: For 7 volumes and counting, the most consistently well written and developed character in the show.

#4: Nora Valykire: Vol.7 FINALLY gave Nora some serious focus and I loved it. I think we’re still supposed to see her backstory at some point while we’re in Atlas, so hopefully that comes next volume.

#3. Lie Ren: Ren’s development in Vol.7 isn’t what I was expecting, but I was happy to see it. He’s going down a dark path and I’m hoping it’s one he can get off.

#2: Yang Xiao Long: The sunny little dragon has been dethroned as my favorite character in the series, but just barely. She sadly didn’t get too much to do in Vol.7, but we did get plenty of cute Bumbleb moments and a really hype fight. Please let the bees kiss next volume, RT.

#1. James “Hero” Ironwood: Vol.7 turned James from a character I previously didn’t care about too much into the deepest and most interesting character the series has ever seen. He is a tragic hero, and one whose tragic end I hope RT executes properly. It’s what his character deserves.

The longer that RWBY goes on and the more side material we get for RWBY (the comics, Ice Queendom, even the non-anthology manga) it seems to be getting close to a few headcanons that I have about the Schneeblings and just how dysfunctional their relationship is.

Like, you have Ice Queendom that is definitely giving us a bit more to Weiss's thoughts on how her family is. Whitley is more of a pest that seems to be watching over her and reminding her of her failures, the duties she has, and adding fuel to the fire of making her question herself. And then there's Winter, someone Weiss has looked up to and basically has seen as a set of rules to be like. Something so close, yet so far away, and still not someone she's really close to.

Now, Ice Queendom is definitely more of an exaggeration on everything due to the grim, but its not too far away from her actual feelings for the little we've seen with her siblings. For Winter, she's distant, but still tries to get close, even if it is at an arms length. And Whitley, what more can I say than he's a 14 year old brat who torments his sister is his own ways. Usually by reminding her about her legacy or even alluding to knowing more about what's going on than he lets on.

Which... all starts to make more and more sense once you realize that Jacques has probably kept the Schneeblings away from each other in various ways. Winter, being the first heir, would've been kept away from Weiss until she decided to be a huntress. Weiss followed shortly after, but wouldn't have been long once she was deemed the heiress and brought into her own training.

Whitley is someone who was left behind and not given much of a chance to know his sisters. Winter would've been gone by the time he'd try to get close to her, and Weiss would've been pulled away for her own training to take over the company, as well as her desires to be a huntress and try to reclaim the Schnee legacy.

And Jacques would be at the center of all of them. Between pulling Winter into being an heir to the SDC, and then pushing her away when she became a huntress, his attempt to hold Weiss to him and pushing her through a brutal test to go to Beacon along with holding the SDC over her head and everything that goes with it. And for Whitley, with Willow drinking, Winter off in the military, and Weiss off at Beacon and then running away from home, Jacques was all that was left for him to turn to for anything. And as a safety mechanism of his own, Whitley started to act like how his father wanted in order to keep himself safe.

And now that Jacques is gone and Willow, Winter, Whitley, and Weiss can start their own reconciliations, it'll be interesting to see the storm that comes as they figuring out how to work through their own traumas to work together.

Hey guys, just as a reminder with RTX around the corner and RWBY Vol 9 coming:

If CRWBY is vague on the panels, there's a reason. If they're not answering with a direct yes or no answer, there's a reason. There are answers that are spoilers in either the yes or no direction which means they wont always be able to answer all the questions without being vague. So if there is no direct yes or no confirmation on a panel, then accept that the answer will be coming at some point in the show.

As a fandom, we need to accept that often the answers we want we cant always have immediately and CRWBY is very good at answering questions when they can or giving us the answer in the show. That goes for any relationship questions or anything about the direction of the volume they havent already told us.

The more I think about Cinder, the more I feel like she's misunderstood from a fandom and character perspective. In show, no one really knows who Cinder is.

Rhodes is probably the only one who really saw Cinder as she was for a while: a scared girl desperate for things to change. And while he was the one to first suggest she becomes a huntress, he starts losing that she's scared and feels alone and starts seeing her as someone who just needs the hope of freedom to keep going.

Salem sees her as an extension of herself, disregarding that she's a scared little girl and uses her a tool for her own needs and a key she keeps close.

Watts sees Cinder as nothing more than a failure and an annoyance, that her biggest success was still a resounding failure because she failed to retrieve the relic from Beacon due to no fault of her own.

RWBY and JNR see her as just a killer, someone who is willing to burn the world to obtain her goals.

And a good majority if the fandom see her as someone who can never change, that her failure to change her direction after her defeat at Haven and that she hasn't turned over a new leaf after Watts' vol 8 tirade, means she's doomed to be killed off.

However, what everyone doesn't seem to realize is that Cinder doesn't actually know who she is. She holds a facade of Salem and the Madame to try to emulate them for her own gain since she doesn't know better. Who she is seems to change person to person as she's promised freedom, uses her allies, tries to find a way to gain her own power. She's a mirror to all that use her, slowly breaking apart the longer she's handled and looked at, tossed away by those who no longer deem her necessary and kept close and ill-maintained by those who need her, causing herself to shatter or to be lost before she can be deemed as useless.

Which begs the question: if no one truly knows Cinder, does she know who she is? And if she doesn't, how long can she keep up the facades until her own perception of herself shatters and reveals to us and herself her true self? And when that day comes, what choice will she make to be true to herself?

Annon-Guy: What're your thoughts on RWBY as a series? There are a lot of people who think it went down the drain sense Monty Oum (May he Rest in peace) died even though he and the others planned the future volumes.

My overall thoughts are neutral. Like any other series, RWBY has its highs and lows. I like some things, such as the animation as the series progresses, the variety of Grimm, some characters such as Weiss and Jaune, and the music. Though, there are some things that can be done better such as some points in the story (i.e., the conflict in Atlas/Fall of Atlas, The Struggle of the Faunus/White Fang storyline), and certain character designs (i.e., Jaune's banana haircut that doesn't work in 3D or Weiss Atlas attire) and choices (i.e., how Ironwood's fall was presented, not having Yang notice Ruby's breakdown).

Steal Thy Hearts! A Persona 5 AU

You thought the Phantom Thieves of Hearts were the only ones traveling Mementos and stealing hearts? Think again! There are more hearts that need to be changed and the Phantom Thieves can only steal so much of them. And with a new group that steals hearts to change people for the worse, they’re gonna need more allies to deal with this new threat. That’s where the Shadow Hunters come in! (A Persona 5 AU with RWBY characters and the 4 Uchihas added in!)

The Shadow Hunters

Inspired by the actions of the Phantom Thieves, what started as an idea to help the helpless became something bigger as Ruby Rose, her sister Yang Xiao Long, and their friends follow in the Phantom Thieves’ footsteps!

Ruby Rose / “Crimson”

Arcana: 0. The Fool

Persona: Artemis (Wind)

Weapons: Scythes and Sniper Rifles

SH Appearance: Her Vol. 4 outfit, except her red cape’s not torn, with a black and red Colombina-style mask. Ruby’s Shadow Hunter mask has a rose on the top right and is decorated with red thorns and vines.

Weiss Schnee / “Blizzard”

Arcana: 3. The Empress

Persona: Deborah (Ice)

Weapons: Rapiers and Revolvers

SH Appearance: Her SnowPea outfit with a short, white fur coat on top of it. As the Ice Princess, Weiss wears a sky blue and white Phantom mask with snowflake designs all over. Weiss’s Phantom mask covers her scarred left eye.

Blake Belladonna / “Shroud”

Arcana: 9. The Hermit

Persona: Byakko (Curse)

Weapons: Katanas and Semi-Automatic Pistols

SH Appearance: Blake wears her Vol. 4 outfit, except the longcoat is black with her purple insignia on the back. Blake’s Shadow Hunter mask is a purple and black colored version of a White Fang mask.

Yang Xiao Long / “Dragon”

Persona: Kohryu (Fire)

Weapons: Gauntlets and Shotguns

SH Appearance: Yang wears her Vol. 4 outfit with her Shadow Hunter mask stylized in the shape of a golden Eastern dragon. Her dragon mask only covers the upper half of her face.

Jaune Arc / “Excalibur”

Persona: Jeanne D’Arc (Bless)

Weapons: Straight Swords with Shields and Pistols

SH Appearance: Jaune wears his Vol. 4 outfit, except that his armor is much lighter due to the fact that he’s a Shadow Hunter and immobility is not suitable for stealing people’s distorted hearts. Jaune wears a knight’s face plate colored in silver and gold.

Nora Valkyrie / “Mjolnir”

Arcana: 7. The Chariot

Persona: Thor (Electricity)

Weapons: Warhammers and Grenade Launchers

SH Appearance: Nora’s costume is her Vol. 4 outfit with armor on the torso and shoulders. Her mask is the faceplate of Jane!Thor’s helmet.

Pyrrha Nikos / “Aegis”

Arcana: 8. Strength

Persona: Achilles (Psy)

Weapons: Spears with Shields and Semi-Automatic Rifles

SH Appearance: Pyrrha wears her canon outfit, with light armor to shield her torso. The Invincible Thief’s mask consists of her tiara and the face plate of a Spartan helmet.

Lie Ren / “Kuroyuri”

Arcana: 14. Temperance

Persona: Hua Mulan (Nuclear)

Weapons: Knives/Daggers and Machine Pistols

SH Appearance: Ren wears his Pre-Time Skip outfit, and a dark green and white Kabuki mask.

The Carmine Blades

Like the Phantom Thieves, the Carmine Blades steal the hearts of others. Unlike them, they steal hearts in order to exacerbate a person’s desires. Whatever they’re up to, the Phantom Thieves and Shadow Hunters agree that it can’t possibly be good and that the Carmine Blades must be stopped.

Cinder Fall / “Witch”

Arcana: 3. The Empress (Reversed)

Persona: Morgan Le Fay (Fire)

Weapons: Curved Swords and Bows and Arrows

CB Appearance: Basically her stealth outfit from when she infiltrated the Cross Continental Transmit System, with some more red added in, especially on the mask.

Roman Torchwick / “DeLarge”

Arcana: 10. Wheel of Fortune (Reversed)

Persona:  Fantômas (Nuclear)

Weapons: Canes and Rocket Launchers

CB Appearance: Roman wears a Jack-O’-Lantern mask with the face holes cut out like his emblem. His outfit is relatively the same as canon.

Mercury Black / “Messenger”

Arcana: 7. The Chariot (Reversed)

Persona: Hermes (Wind)

Weapons: Weaponized Boots and Assault Rifles

CB Appearance: Mercury wears a domino mask with grey wings on the side. His outfit is just as it is in canon.

Emerald Sustrai / “Illusion”

Arcana:  1. The Magician (Reversed)

Persona: Laverna (Psy)

Weapons:  Kamas/Kusarigamas and Revolvers

CB Appearance: Emerald wears a black and green ninja cowl alongside her canon outfit.

Neopolitan / “Mute”

Arcana: 2. The High Priestess (Reversed)

Persona: Mary Poppins (Ice)

Weapons: Umbrella w/ Estoc inside and Submachine Guns

CB Appearance: Neo wears a black and white, two-faced comedy mask, the smile wide and dripping with malice and madness. Neo looks just the same as in canon.

The Uchiha Syndicate

Little is known about the Uchiha Syndicate other than the fact that it’s a group of 4 people and that they have the same familial relation. However, they seem to show a level of disdain towards the Carmine Blades, but they occasionally clash with the Phantom Thieves and Shadow Hunters for some unknown reason. Thus, they are considered the ‘Wild Card’ (pun intended) counterpart to the Phantom Thieves.

Sasuke Uchiha / “Heika”

Arcana: 4. The Emperor / 16. The Tower

Persona: Indra (Electricity)

Weapons: Shinobi Weapons and Suppressed Guns

US Appearance: Sasuke wears an Akatsuki cloak. Underneath the cloak Sasuke wears his Post-Itachi Battle outfit, with light armor added. He also wears a black and crimson Phantom mask, which covers the left side of his face.

Itachi Uchiha / “Shinigami”

Arcana: 12. The Hanged Man

Persona: Yatagarasu (Fire)

Weapons: Shinobi Weapons

US Appearance: Like Sasuke, Itachi also wears the Akatsuki cloak, but he wears a dark ANBU outfit underneath instead. Itachi wears a black and red ANBU mask.

Obito Uchiha / “Tobi”

Arcana: 13. Death

Persona: Nobunaga (Nuclear)

Weapons: Shinobi Weapons

US Appearance: Obito wears his Fourth Shinobi War outfit and mask, except his outfit is completely black instead of purple.

Madara Uchiha / “Enma”

Arcana: 15. The Devil

Persona: Ama-no-Kagaseo (Curse)

Weapons: Gunbai (war fan) and Shinobi Weapons

US Appearance: Madara wears his burgundy armor with a Noh mask to match.
