Rewatching Immortal Samsara and God the parallels between Tang Zhou and Li Lianhua.
Both of them despising the person they used to be/people remember them as, and refusing to be seen as the person they used to be
Both of them dying faster whenever they use their internal energy/cultivation but using their power in a manner some people might call frivolous because "just let me indulge myself, just this once"
Both of them starting out as carefree mildly arrogant cultivator/martial artists with a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, and them slowly losing their carefree attitude because of love either for one lotus spirit or Shan Gudao
Both of them being at peace with dying but having 2 people fight so hard for them to not die
But in the end, they're so different, because Tang Zhou doesn't even remember when he was Ying Yuan, doesn't remember what he did or why he's so important, he just despises Yingyuan because of what he did to Yandan. He's so tragic because he was never seen as his own person, just an extension of a heavenly deity going through mortal tribulations. Yumo and Yandan fight so hard for him to not die, yes, just like how difang fight for Li Lianhua to live, but unlike difang, it's not because they want Tang Zhou to live for himself and for the people that love him, they just don't want Tang Zhou to die because that means Yingyuan won't come back if he dies. And that hurts so much

Immortal Samsara makes an interesting point for the saying "love is the death of duty". Because Love and Duty are heavily interwoven in this show for the stakes of said duty are so high that love cannot exists without fulfilling it. Sovereign Lord Ying Yuan out of commission = heavenly realm on the edge of breakdown should any crisis occur whatsoever. The parents arc mirrors that too. Had his mother Ran Qing not decided to fulfil her duty Xuan Ye wouldn't be stopped like ever because clearly this family is the only one of any real influence over the entire world. Poor unfortunate souls really. 😆
So Ran Qing might actually have a point in forbidding love because with stakes like these it can lead to catastrophic deeds - it DID for a whole bunch of futures where Xuan Ye won. But Ying Yuan is also right for undoing that because Love is also what can make you the happiest you have ever been. What was his immortality even worth considering the listless life he lived before Yan Dan? Which also stands in contrast to his father who wanted immortality beyond everything else. But the love he held for Ran Qing made him happiest in the end because a world where he won and she died was also not worth living in.

rewatching this deeply unserious scene again and I just LOVE it so much... she got this dying immortal a coffin for his birthday (none of those words should logically be next to each other) and he has the state of mind to take prime corpse position and then COMPLAIN about it's capacity and how it's a waste of resources...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this was my favourite yandan yingyuan era... no one was missing a half of their heart, no debt larger than life, yingyuan was like 500 times more drama queen sassmax than usual, cheng yi is throwing up blood, no stupid evil sister plotline... it was great

Thoughts on Immortal Samsara
Tumblr media
SPOILERS
SPOILERS
SPOILERS
So I finally watched Immortal Samsara. I was worried that it was going to be ashes 2.0, and at first it did feel that way, but it quickly turned into its own story. Overall I enjoyed it. I'm glad I didn't watch it when I was watching fairy/devil as I do think this show may not live up to that same excitement. I think it is better than galaxy tho. I ended up reading the novel (Agarwood Like Crumbs) as well (an English translation, as I cannot read Chinese). I think I know why the drama ended the way it did, they seemed to have wanted it to end open ended. I am also glad they released those special episodes with Yan Dan and Ying Yuan reborn again.
I want to take a moment to appreciate the costumes. I think that the costumes were absolutely beautiful. Yan Dan was always stunning in her outfits. I love that each character had their own special motifs built into their costumes too.
I was definitely rooting for Tang Zhao during the mortal trials. That was probably my favorite parts in both the drama and novel. Mortal Tang Zhao was much more true to himself than Heavenly Emperor Ying Yuan. The drama's confession scene was so beautiful and heartbreaking.
I am just soooooooo SHOOK that Yan Dan ends up with Yu Mo in the novel! Did I read the wrong translation?? Like what?!
You Mo is probably the healthier choice, and maybe he was better for Yan Dan, but I high hopes for Tang Zhao.
I think both versions of the story had their pros and cons. But I felt like I wasted my time reading the novel when she didn't even end up with Ying Yuan/Tang Zhao in the end. I feel like he was so much more forgiveable in the novel than the drama, so it just made scene to me that they would work out.
I think that Yang Zi's acting has improved since ashes and hope that she will continue to bring out lovely fantasy dramas. For a bit it seemed like she was always playing the same character, but I'm glad that she has improved. I wish all her fantasy boyfriends luck as she seems to enjoy stabbing them all in the heart.
This is the first drama I have seen Cheng Yi in. AND I AM HOOKED. I will be looking for all his dramas to watch, so excited. Um have you ever seen a man cry that beautifully? It seems like he always has angsty roles? Oh boy.
And man the "sexy daddy arc?" Woo, so good. Cheng Yi was soo damn fine during that arc. Unfortunately, that didn't happen in the novel. There was actually a lot of stuff in the drama that did not happen in the novel. But that's why you just gotta explore it all.
Anyone want to talk about Asian drama? Hit me up!
Thanks for listening to my Ted talk, byeee

I got the feeling that people hate the arc in the mortal world where Yan Dan pushes Tang Zhou away after regaining her memories. But I have to say that I actually really liked that part ... I mean it was heartbreaking and I was somewhat frustrated but I also feel like it was necessary and beneficial for them in the long run.
After first regaining her memories, she was understandably upset because Ying Yuan did everything in his power to make her hate him so that she may have a future. She doesn't know that and her feelings of betrayal are valid (I do not blame Ying Yuan for his actions either. He had an abundance of horrible and worse options and tried to make the best choices. It might have been better if he and Yan Dan communicated more but I feel he was the only one who really grasped the enormity of the situation - that there was no way Yan Dan would have survived if he so much as hinted at caring for her - the emperor was on his case already). Anyway she feels betrayed and doesn't want to be with a man who could never love her (as he made her think) and could definitely never choose her. So pushing him away was her wish to save herself from future heartbreak. It also gave her time to come to terms with her feelings and to find out what really happened back then (like with the butterfly of hate but actually love).
Then comes the iteration where Tang Zhou does the unthinkable: he decides to choose her over his sect, over his martial arts, over everything that held importance in his life. I think that it did help her heal and see that duty is not more important to him than love. (Funnily enough I have the Barbie and the Pauper quote stucknin my head because of this show: duty is doing the things your heart might well regret. It just fits them so beautifully because honestly the duty of the Sovereign Lord alnost broke them both)
But then comes the most important part for her I believe - what she did not even manage to do in the heavenly realm as isolated as she was from the world up there: she understood what Ying Yuan meant to the world. That all her friends, her family, the people she loved needed Tang Zhou to become the Sovereign Lord again. He can choose his duty over her because the sect will be FINE. Sure they needed some help establishing themselves but ultimately they did not need Tang Zhou to lead them. The stakes were pretty much non-existent. This is not true for the world where a conspiracy 11 000 years in the making has already seen ENTIRE REALMS DESTROYED. He IS the powerhouse of the heavenly realm, the only one who can make things right. That is also the compromise they make at the end after all. AFTER fulfilling his duty and saving the world, he will leave for the mortal realm and they can be together. When the world is save to live in once again. And she needed to get to the point where she sacrificed the second part of her heart not only for love. The first half was mainly out of her love for him. Sure she thought that the heavenly realm might need him but the reasons where far more personal. Now she also knows that he NEEDS to be up there and make things right. In the end he sacrificed himself for duty and love for he had already hurt her with the demonic powers he cannot control and she choses to share his destiny which enabled them later on to be reborn together.
Another minor point is that she basically turned the Uno reverse card on him: now she will push him away for his own good. I think a part of her doesn't want him to choose between the world and herself again because it is at the end a cruel choice that will tear him apart no matter what. And she loves him too much to do that hence the compromise later on.

sleeping positions. yan!hsr.
lunae
he knows you hate him, but something in him refuses to stay away from you. so dan heng wraps his tail around your wrist, or leg, or waist, if he feels you won't protest too badly. he hates being away from you for too long - 'too long' meaning any duration longer than a second, and so he always likes to have some part of him in contact with you.
sampo
he's horrible (affectionate). he likes tucking you into him back first, one arm locked around your waist - never mind that it's summer, and the both of you are sweating through your clothes. sampo's only goal in life seems to be making you as uncomfortable as possible.
jing yuan
you often find yourself waking to a scene out of a fantasy romance novel - jing yuan, his hair golden under the early morning light, gentle smile full of affection, one arm draped lightly over you. he's surprisingly comfortable to sleep with, and doesn't make you feel like you're being held hostage - i mean, you are, just not to the bed.
blade
a menace, and tough to boot. he crushes you to his chest with both arms, leaving you no room to move and barely enough to breathe. he seems to have no concept of how strong he is, and it takes a combination of cajoling, kisses, and kicks to his shins to get blade to let up a little. good luck going to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
