swf is over. they actually performed in front of a live audience which i thought was interesting (from what it seems, its the eliminated crews x friends and families of the participating crews; but nevertheless, i think the camerawork was so much better this time.) there were two rounds - (1) an artist collaborated w each crew and produced a song for them; and (2) solo crew performances.

thinking about it, i dont think the crews had sufficient time to actually prepare well-thought out performances. if its structured like how all mnet competition shows are (which i believe are relatively the same), i think the crews had like 3-4 days max to prepare? i know for smtm, rappers shared that they stayed awake for like 18 hours to prepare for each round and for kingdom, idols shared that they really had only two-three days of practice. and because each dance crew has to come up with their own choreo, i think its similar to the rappers where they pulled all-nighters (unlike the idols who had a whole creative team to manage and pull it off). but take this with a grain of salt - just my assumption. after swf, the leaders from each crew are going to be on variety shows so maybe they'll provide more context.

re. first round, i thought it was unnecessary for the singers to be present? esp with how they just stood off to the side. cl was the only one who entered center stage for a bit but overall, i think all the stages were a bit awkward?

second round, i actually liked hook's stage. similar to prowdmon's previous stage where they performed to spoken poetry. this was, in my opinion, their best choreo the whole show.

i don't really have that much thoughts or opinions other than what was said before. the finale wasn't entirely that exciting for me.

oh i'm glad they finally got to perform in front of an audience, even if it is just friends and family. sometimes those are the best audiences, actually. it does make a slightly weird descalation of scale though, i'm not gonna lie. like those first performances were so unnecessarily large but the finale had to be necessarily small because of space restrictions. i don't know if it was a good television choice, but it was probably the only choice mnet made that favoured the dancers to some degree.

it is probably likely that they didn't have much time to choreograph and prep, which is irritating and mnet must know at this point that it doesn't create good performances. if they were only gonna give them less than a week to prep then they should have at the very least hired some costume techs and a creative director for each of the crews (or one for the show in general) so that they would actually have time to work things out properly.

i like that they had a first round with the singers, but also yea it was absolutely unnecessary for them to actually be there. it definitely made the stages awkward because they were (for some reason) still wanting to film the singers, even though the dancers were supposedly the focus. and even though there was an attempt to work cl into the performance more, i still think that anything more than that gets stilted and a bit weird because then you're verging on just....choreographing for an idol. i'm assuming they were not judged for the first round? if they were that's a bit...hmm. it would make more sense for those stages to be more like special stages or entertainment filler, rather than like, an actual challenge round.

honestly when i saw that the winner was holybang i was like '...huh?' because that's definitely not what i would have predicted, but after watching the performances from the final round i can absolutely see that. they kind of sat in the middle of the pack for most of the competition, but this last choreo is easily their best and the best of the whole episode. it's a different musical choice, the costumes are great, and it uses a lot of isolation in unusual ways, which make it stand out.

i agree i think that this is hook's best choreo, and i love that they used ksl. i'm a big fan of incorporating sign language into performances (bsl interpreted shows are standard practice here) and i've seen a few that are fully intergrated and there's a lot of untapped potential there. i do wish it looked less visually similar to prowdmon's routine but with the amount of same-looking hiphop routines we've seen, i'm not too pressed about it.

i wish i had more to say about coca n butter and lachica's choreos but that reaction shot of monica where she's totally flat faced basically sums it up. i think it's mostly a personal taste thing at this point, since i don't think i've liked a single coca n butter performance and lachica has been mostly too on the nose for me. there's nothing especially wrong with either of these routines, they're just not that compelling to watch. i have the same observations for the singer collab stages; they're just nothing that eye catching about them. holybang did reprise theirs on mcountdown so i got a chance to watch fully stationary stabilized footage and i still wasn't that impressed. i am glad they finally managed to fix (sort of) the camerawork though, even if it took until the goddamn finale.

why all reylos are racist

y’all can go ahead and cancel me now because some of you are not going to like what i have to say and i am completely okay with that.

this recent gq interview with john boyega has incensed me. hearing all the things he went through, from disney and from “fans” and with no support from anyone… i’m livid. sometimes when i think about it for too long i start shaking, i’m so furious. and the response from the reylo fandom has infuriated me to a degree i honestly didn’t know was possible.

some of you may have seen my recent tumblr rampage. it’s reylo bullying hours here on my blog, and i’m not sorry either. one person threatened to post screenshots of my comments, which like… okay? i know what the fuck i said, it wasn’t that long ago. in fact i was going to include the screenshots in this post right here, but they blocked me before i had the chance. sorry. i’m sure somebody has them. anyway…

over the past two days in the star wars fandom we have seen something unprecedented: an outpouring of support for john boyega. both reylos and anti-reylos have joined forces to voice support for john in the wake of the gq interview (and the blm protests, let’s be real, some of y’all would not have given half a fuck if it wasn’t suddenly cool to be antiracist). and this showing of unity is one of the most rage-inducing things i’ve ever seen in a fandom (which is saying something; i have seen some shit).

reylo fandom, full offense intended, but where the fuck do you get off? you’re supporting john now? where was this support when tfa came out and you couldn’t stand the thought of him next to your white-girl-self-insert? where was it when tlj came out and your boy ryan completely sidelined him? where was it earlier this fucking year when y’all twisted a harmless joke (like yall haven’t spent years writing reylo-throne-room-sex-meta BULLSHIT) and ignored the vile racist shit coming from your own fav’s mouth? but you’re supporting him now? now that being antiracist is trendy? fuck outta here with that bullshit.

your fandom is the reason for the vast majority of the absolutely subhuman treatment john has endured over the last few years. your fandom influenced ryan (yes i know what his name is) to write tlj the way he did, you have behaved indefensibly here on tumblr.hell writing and drawing and fantasizing about all sorts of racist bullshit, and y’all have STAYED in his twitter mentions spewing hatred seven ways to sunday. but NOW, without a shred of self-reflection, you’re supporting him? now his experiences are valid?

the way that your fandom refuses to take accountability for its actions makes me see red. y’all stay on some “not all reylos” nonsense and i am SICK OF IT. i’m only gonna say this once, and i want you to hear me: you cannot be a reylo and be “antiracist”. you cannot participate in a fandom that has behaved the way yours has and say “blm, uwu acab.” you can’t. like do you think black people are dumb? that we can’t see right through you? we can.

“but rae,” i hear you whining. “you’re gonna say just because i like two characters together i’m a racist?” and of course not. that would be ludicrous. i think just because you knowingly engage and participate in a fandom that has racism encoded in its dna, you’re a racist. i think because y’all are in bed with racist harassers, racist trolls, and racist content creators, you’re a racist. that’s what the fuck i think. y’all lost the right to “it’s just a ship” me the instant you dragged john boyega into this.

here’s an example: i watched tfa about three days after it came out. i watched the first half, saw the obvious relationship set up between finn and rey, and thought, “aw, cute.” then i watched kylo and rey fight, watch him offer to teach her, and thought, “... interesting.”

when i got home i checked tumblr for finnrey content, saw the outpouring of love from black fans, all the cute fanart and fics blooming, and smiled. then, slowly, guiltily, i searched “reylo.”

BOOM. racism. the things i saw in the tag that night are tattooed on my brain. reylos rejoicing about the obvious rey/kyle pairing because “sw would never put her with that monkey finn”. calling him an “oaf”, “useless”, “bumbling”, “stupid”. reylos joking about how “when they talked about the Dark side, [they] didn’t think they meant that kind of dark.” “woke” reylos pretending to ship stormpilot in an obvious ploy to get finn away from kylo. and in between all of that, cute ship art. fun fics. talented gif makers. and nobody saying shit about the reprehensible behavior going on in their tag.

reylo is built on a foundation of racism. from that first week, racism has been woven into the fabric of your fandom, and it’s been going unchecked. and i don’t mean calling out other reylos. that’s not enough. i mean taking actual steps. y’all have been sitting in a cesspool of racism for five years, and its time for you to get the fuck out or shut the fuck up about being an “ally”. y’all need to leave this fandom.

don’t agree? here’s another story. in 2017, when i still watched supergirl (before i grew taste) i shipped karamel. for those of you who don’t know, karamel is the ship of kara zor-el (supergirl) and mon-el, her second love interest. when supergirl was moved to the cw for its second season, the decision was made to abruptly end her romance with jimmy olsen, played by mecahd brooks (a black man) and replace him with mon-el, played by chris wood, a white man, who was revealed to be, among other things, an alien slaveowner, as well as a playboy and all-around terrible person. and i shipped them. look, i’m not defending myself, but i never really bought the chemistry between jimmy and kara. even though mon-el’s introduction and the way that they carelessly disregarded kara’s feelings for jimmy made me uncomfortable, i thought the way melissa played her attraction to chris wood was more believable (and again, i’m not defending myself, but they are now married so it’s not like i was wrong). so i shipped them. simple as that, right?

well, no. not really. because the inherent racism in the way the writers wrote out her admittedly sweet romance with a black man in favor of a white slaveowner jerk kept bothering me. and finally i decided that it made me too uncomfortable to participate in. i never really reblogged any karamel fandom stuff, but i completely divorced myself from the fandom. i stopped reading karamel fic, and i switched to reblogging exclusively jimmy/kara content until the fandom died out/i stopped watching. i made a choice that real life racism is more important to me than a fucking fandom or a ship, and then i acted accordingly. simple as that.

and i’m not saying you have to stop liking the reylo dynamic. i still like the chemistry between kara and mon-el. i’ve shipped problematic ships before (bamon comes to mind) and i don’t think there’s anything wrong with that (to a point). but there’s a difference between liking a ship dynamic and engaging and contributing to a fan culture of racism. you have to stop participating in the fandom. y’all are in bed with people indistinguishable from confederate-flag-waving-all-lives-matter-touting racists and you don’t feel the need to get out of that environment? there comes a certain point where you have to decide if fandom bullshit is more important to you than fighting racism, and unfortunately, reylos have chosen wrong. that, ladies and gentlemen, is why all reylos are racist, regardless of what they say. roll credits.

except i have more to say, so i’m gonna say it. first of all, i’m not trying to hold myself up as some kind of paragon of virtue. i’m not holier-than-thou because all my ships are “woke” or whatever. chemistry is subjective, and we’re all going to be attracted to different ship dynamics, and there’s nothing wrong with that in theory. what matters is the execution. i finally had to say one day, “you know, this ship and the racist baggage it carries is actually less important to me than battling systemic racism on every level, including the fandom level”. y’all thought being antiracist was gonna be easy? that you wouldn’t have to make some actual changes, to make some actual sacrifices? sorry not sorry to disappoint. and if i, a normal-ass person with flaws and problematic thinking that i’m still dealing with and the whole ine yards, can make that decision, then other people should be required to as well.

(what really irks me is that the karamel fandom wasn’t even really that bad! i definitely could have gotten away with being a karamel stan in 2017. thankfully the supercat and supercorp shippers were doing the lord’s work and bullying them into submission (don’t think i’m letting y’all off the hook either, y’all have got some racism to deal with as well but that’s an essay for another day) but like most of the racism happened at the writing level; the fandom itself wasn’t engaging in racist clownery on the regular. but like the reylos are. y’all see racist bullshit coming from your neighbor, fav fic writer, artist, gif maker, whatever, and don’t say shit? don’t feel the need to distance yourself from them? gtfoh.)

i made this argument earlier when i was on my rampage (which i’m still on btw so don’t clown in my inbox, you will get your shit rocked) but i’m going to make it again because i feel like its important to note. when i pointed out that existing in the reylo fandom while you are aware of its racism makes you complicit in that racism, a white reylo told me earlier that (paraphrasing, my memory’s not as good as it used to be and i did mention that they’d blocked me) “you don’t solve a problem like systemic racism by ignoring it. leaving the fandom would be allowing it to happen.” when i pointed out that that’s police officer rhetoric almost verbatim, she (a white reylo) admonished me (a black woman) not to compare police brutality to a “ship war.” lmao.

look, clearly y’all need a refresher on what “systemic” means. it means, quite simply, that there are systems, large and small, allow for racism to exist, and it also means that allowing for racism to exist on the small scale means expecting it on a large one. like you think police officers spring fully formed from the head with racist ideals already ingrained? no! they learn it and learn to justify it with “well just because my friend made a racist joke doesn’t make me a racist” and “just because i laughed at my friend’s using a racist term in my video game doesn’t make me a racist” and “just because my friend is a racist doesn’t mean i’m a racist” and then we have people watching their coworkers kneel on a man’s back for 8 minutes with no remorse. i’m not gonna solve police brutality by fighting reylos on tumblr, but fandom racism is real racism with consequences on our world, and i don’t tolerate ANY type of racism. and the fact that you are so willing to not just tolerate it but justify it should say something to you.

and not all reylos are like this. similar to cops, good reylos don’t last. i have seen people grow so disgusted by the racism in the reylo fandom that they publicly turned their backs on it, and those reylos i respect. you’ve heard of “the only good cop is an ex-cop” well get ready for “the only good reylo is an ex-reylo”.

(and also like far be it from me to justify a cop but one could at least say they have their livelihoods to think about (not like they couldn’t just pick a nonmurderous profession but i digress) but you reylos can’t even choose between taking a stance against the hateful and unjustified bullying of a man who had the audacity to… get a job (?)... over a ship? come on now.)

the point of all this is, for all their posturing about “being antiracist” and “fuck 12” and “support john boyega”, reylos have decided that a relationship between two fictional people is more important than all the black and brown people who are hurt by that decision and the consequences of that decision. and before y’all pull some “b-but there are POC reylos!” (stop fucking using poc as an adjective, its a noun, it stands for person of color, please use it as such) internalized racism is a thing. busting out your token “reylo of color” (see how easy that was?) is not going to change my mind. all reylos are complicit in the racism of their peers, and being complicit makes you culpable. full stop.

and that is why the public support of john boyega from the reylo fandom has me seeing red. renounce your fandom or keep that man’s name out of your mouth. anyway, this was long and ranty and entirely stream-of-consciousness and i’m refusing to edit it so it’s probably completely incomprehensible to anyone besides me but if you made it this far thanks for reading ig. all reylos are racist, blm, fuck 12, acab, stan john boyega, don’t clown in my inbox unless you’re coming to bully me for being a karamel shipper, which i deserve (or do, i couldn’t give less of a fuck). good night.

Symphogear XV Episode 02

I swear here that I will never break. 

Symphogear is back and BOI. This episode was heavy, this episode was very heavy. I had to take a 2 hours break after I watched the episode of how heavy it ended. This just proves that XV isn’t here to play and this season will probably be the best season ever (I hope I’m not wrong on this).

So starting off, OPENING AND ENDING!

I thought symphogear would never be able to top Synchrogazer, and until AXZ I was right. But then XV came and BOOM! This opening is so good, not just the song but the actual opening animation was amazing as well. They’ve done such a good job with it, I’m legitimately impressed. And Metanoia, oof what a great song. The first time I heard the song, when they released the short PV on Nana’s channel, I was scared, though I had loved the song, I had no idea of how they would make a good OP with the song, and I was even more concerned with how they would use it as the final attack in the season finale, but now after seeing the actual OP I’ve thrown all my fears away because now I’m sure they can deliver it.

The ED, on the other hand, wasn’t as successful with me. The visuals are awesome, I dare to say it's the best ending visually, but the song... The song is so meh, I was really disappointed by it. But we got this beautiful shot at the end so I’m not as mad as I would normally be.

Now to the episode itself. They used the same formula from next week with having the episode set on the present but with a flashback section in the middle. I like this format, but this one is very dangerous because it can get boring very fast, I hope they use it well from here on now.

I was a little throw off when they showed that adorable moment focused on Chirs and her normal daily life. Don’t get me wrong, I did like everything that was shown there, especially the picture Chirs keeps from her birthday party with the girls (I hope we get to see it sometime in a flashback), and as weird as gloves are as a present I do like that interaction between her, Hibiki and Miku on their way to school.

The thing that gets me off is that watching this first part I felt like we were going heads in into a Chirs episode, but then a few minutes later we see that no, the focus on this episode is Tsubasa, which on itself is not a problem, but the show had set up something with Chris coming up and I was very interested in seeing that since AXZ left me with a little bit of a bitter aftertaste when regarding to Chirs.

Even though that was a little problem I had I still enjoyed Tsubasa’s story from this episode, but before going there let’s focus on the flashback fight for a moment.

Kirka and Shirabe‘s fight was pretty awesome. I know working together as one is their thing and it has been their thing since the first time they appeared in G, but in this season they’re doing it to perfection. From the ice skating moment from the last episode to their dance move as a couple on this one everything has been done amazingly and the final result is great, and I hope they keep doing this and making it better and better as the season goes on.

But sadly things can’t be always perfect and this flashback gave me two problems.

Now, I admit, complaining about this is symphogear is kinda useless at this point but... the sexualization they’re doing to young girls here’s is just way too awkward to me. Not to say that sexualization in general is fine, but still, it really bothered me.

Like, if this whole pole dance transformation was with any of the older girls, it wouldn’t make it fine per se, but it would at least be less uncomfortable to watch. Like, Kirika’s what? 15? 16? This is so wrong.

Then there’s the Alchemist, I believe her name is Elisa or something, I like her concept and using different tails as weapons is quite interesting, but I know that every time we see her power in action we gonna see her butt and even if she’s not a teenager she still looks like a kid and is quite disturbing to look at.

And again, I know that bringing this up doesn’t have a lot of purpose, and this is stuff Symphogear has been doing for 7 years, and maybe they’ve done worse in the past and I’m just not remembering it (I do have a terrible memory, everyone knows this), but it really bothered me as I was watching, especially Kirika’s transformation.

Thankfully that was the only low point from the episode and everything else was top tier.

SO, first few questions, is Maria now Tsubasa’s bodyguard? Or is she another manager like Ogawa? Or is she there just because she wants to see her girlfriend? Regardless, she looks amazing in that suit and I hope we see her more in that outfit.

With that out of the way, do yall allow me to scream? BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT I’M GONNA DO SINCE THE BIG DUO LIVE PERFORMANCE TRADITION IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!

I had lost my hopes for symphogear ever doing this again seeing that AXZ lacked a performance and episode 1 of XV was just battle, BUT THEY GAVE US ANOTHER PERFORMANCE AND I JUST WANNA SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, Angelic Remnant isn’t my favorite song from these lives, this spot is still owned by Seiten Galaxy Cross, but this sure is the best live scene the show has ever put out for us in its entire run. The camera work makes it hard to take a good screenshot from Maria and Tsubasa together to illustrate this post? Yes, but still, that was amazing, a true work of art.

Cooling off from the excitement a little bit I wanna put a light on something Maria thought right after the performance ended that got me very curious.

She says that the performance they just did was “like the miracle the song of my homeland caused that day“. Now correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure all we know from Maria’s past is just from the point in which she and Serena got to the orphanage. We know they’re Ukrainians but that’s just because one of the writers revealed that on a tweet in Serena’s birthday, right? This has never been mentioned on the show.

So are we gonna get more background information on Maria and maybe Shirabe and Kirika as well?? We already got some hints on AXZ about Shirabe origins so... is this what we’re gonna get to build more development for the ex-FIS girls this season? Uhhhhh I’m excited!

Now it has come the time to talk about what made this episode SO HEAVY.

The alchemists' attack to Tsubasa’s concert was a low move, and I don’t say this as a bad thing, I say this because it was really low to make her revive the same terror she lived when Kanade died. THIS IS CRUEL, IT HURTS MY HEART, and I love that they’re doing this because I’m assuming they’ll make great things from opening this wound again.

And thank God for the production this season being so damn good and for Nana being amazing at her job because we can feel Tsubasa getting more lost in despair each time the camera focus on her and is so heartbreaking but the animation is so fluid and make things so beautiful, THERE’S SO MANY EMOTIONS GOING ON.

Now to the other alchemist that was shown in this episode. When I first saw the concept images I had in mind that the pink furry girl would be my favorite alongside the cutie honey looking girl, but after seeing her in action I absolutely love to despise her.

She was a pretty good villain in this episode, and she has done a thing that I think we’ve never seen in this show so far. If I remember things correctly, all human deaths so far (not including villains) were caused solely either by noise or magic and even if people were controlling those things we’ve never seen another human directly killing anyone using their own hands before. I think Maria attacked some US officers in G but she didn’t kill them, right?

And as much as I’m pretty used to seeing horrible deaths happening in fiction and most of them don’t phase me anymore, this one got me to flinch. I’m used to people turning into dust and disappearing in this series, not to have an innocent body being pierced right in the chest. That was fucking heavy, especially with everything else that was going on in this fight.

Now murders aside, I’m quite interested in what this new alchemic power is that apparently is invading a “seal”. This is probably what gonna force a gear update in the middle of the season, which if you checked my other symphogear reviews you know, that I don’t like, but this one piqued my interest and I think for the first time I’m excited about a new power-up that isn’t the X-Dive.

We had the post-credits scene with that relic recovered from the coffin again, and I’m even more thirsty for information on this thing. I don’t need an info dump, but they could keep releasing bits of information of what the relic is in scenes like this throughout the season till we reach the point in which it will become more relevant and I’d definitely love to see it being done.

And this was episode 2 of XV. This one was a huge step up if compared with last week’s episode. I’m just as broken as Tsubasa is right now, this is how good this episode was. Now I’m gonna go to bed because I need another break after revisiting all of this. See you guys tomorrow~
