(A Totally Serious) Gintama Dads Tier List
Why does this series have so many dads help-
Tumblr media
S
Isaburo: Despite his outwardly stern demeanor, he understands Nobume's past traumas and helps her cope with them, while also educating her on the harsh realities they face. He named her after his deceased daughter and cared for her as such, even texting her frequently and buying her donuts.
A
Shouyo: He's a father figure for several characters in the series, demonstrating unwavering love and acceptance, and provided a supportive environment for them to grow. His memory and teachings remain a guiding force for his students. Reason for losing points: He left his kids concussed and dumb.
Gintoki: He consistently shows protectiveness towards Kagura and Shinpachi, often putting their safety and well-being above his own. He's playful with them, teaches them important life lessons, and accepts them unconditionally. Despite his flaws, Kagura and Shinpachi love him very much. Reason for losing points: Has several mental health issues and his feet stink.
Zenzou's dad: He became a father figure to many children as he taught ninja arts and played kick the can with them. Many of his students attended his funeral, showing how loved he was. Reason for losing points: Sold Zenzou's JUMP collection to buy p*rn.
Matsugorou: Also known as Musashi, he's Ikumatsu's dad. It's shown that despite their poverty they were very happy together, until he lost his memory trying to save a boy from drowning. He saves her daughter and reconnects with her. Reason for losing points: He wears a jacket and fundoshi.
B
Jirochou: He abandoned his daughter Pirako because he felt compelled to protect what his friend Tatsugorou left behind after he died. His subsequent actions reflect a desire for redemption and a willingness to spend more time with her. Reason for losing points: Was too chicken to have a threesome with Tatsugorou and Otose.
Abuto: He's not the stepdad, he's the dad that stepped up. Although he's not exactly a parental figure to Kamui, he has been by his side since he was a kid and cares about him a lot. Kamui was even shown to hesitate attacking him. Reason for losing points: He's losing his will to live.
C
Shimura Ken: Not much is known about him, only that he died leaving Tae and Shinpachi with a huge debt. Although he cannot be blamed for dying from an illness, he didn't take any measures to prevent his children from suffering because of him. Reason for losing points: His name is a parody of a comedy actor.
Koshinori: Since the heir of the Yagyuu clan had to be a man, instead of changing the rules, he forced Kyuubei to conform to that identity. He later decides to let her live as she sees fit. Reason for losing points: His height is 122 cm (4'0").
Umibouzu: He has a complex relationship with Kamui and Kagura. His absence leaves a void in their lives and creates feelings of abandonment, even if he'd reasons to do so. His two children ended up finding substitute father figures elsewhere. Reason for losing points: Stopped a 3 day fight to take a dump.
D aka Betrayed their students tier
Jiraia: He takes on the role of Tsukuyo's mentor and trainer, but his influence extended beyond that, manipulating her emotions and exploiting her vulnerabilities. Their relationship becomes increasingly abusive and toxic until she breaks free of it. Reason for losing points: Bad skincare habits.
Utsuro: Despite his mentorship role, he manipulates his students' emotions and desires for his own ends, creating emotional turmoil within them as they uncover his true intentions and the extent of his malevolence. Reason for losing points: His existence.

Hello there! For the mini event may you please do gintama with the au avatar the last airbender, thank you!
Hello there, my lovely anon! I definitely can do that - I really couldn't come up with solid ideas, so I admit to taking the lazy way out, so have a pretty comprehensive list on what type of Benders everyone would be in this AU! And guys, there are so many characters in Gintama so I swear it wasn't as easy and lazy as it looks! Thanks for sending in a request and I hope you'll enjoy!
Okay, so we're going into this AU with there being the four major bending types - Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Each bending type is as it is portrayed in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with people possessing different degrees of bending and different skills being present within each bending type.
So, when considering which type of Bender each character would be, I kind of broke it down into personality types and traits and qualities to look for, based on what I figure the 'stereotypical' Bender is for each of the four.
Earth Benders are a little rough around the edges, slow to anger, slow to decide on things, but stubborn once their mind is made up. They can be sensitive and they are often very patient.
Air Benders are gentle souls, respectful and adaptable, changeable. They're fast, both in their movements and in their thoughts.
Water Benders are typically calm and easy-going, flexible enough to adapt to their companions or situations. They're often quite easy to talk to and rather content with their lives.
Fire Benders are often prideful and confident individuals who are loyal, determined and ambitious. They can be very playful and fun but they often also have very short fuses on their tempers, which can be very volatile and explosive.
Keeping that in mind, this is what I figure the characters would be for Benders.

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away...Episode 77
Episode Title: Yesterday's Enemy, After All Is Said And Done, Is Still The Enemy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY 20 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 77 (manga chaps 112, 113 and 114):
So much OkiKagu goodness...I swoon from the abundance of cuteness....
Tumblr media
1) The little kitty was just such a perfect touch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) How adorable was Okita, imitating Hijikata??
Tumblr media
3) Sweet Shinpachi sloppy crying as he talked about how much he loved Tae-chan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) My eyes well up with tears EVERY SINGLE TIME I get to this scene! Love this family so much...the whole extended bunch of them.
Tumblr media
5) Loved how Kondou was trying to slip in a bro-in-law honorific...even though Shinpachi was having none of it.
Tumblr media
6) These goofballs reminded me of our Joui goofballs...except our Joui boys are much better looking.
Tumblr media
7) Best horrible joke ever...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8) ...which naturally deserved the best and most reasonable response ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9) Hijikata and Kagura’s one-two punch at Sougo. I especially loved Kagura’s gleeful expression while she chanted his murder.
Tumblr media
10) Bless the anime team for adding in this precious reaction shot (and having my two OTPs stand next to each other...technically all three of my main OTPs are represented since Kondou and Pachi-kun are future bro-in-laws).
Tumblr media
11) I love Kondou but he can be such a big idiot sometimes. No one with two brain cells to rub together would put that plate on their team leader in such an obvious and vulnerable spot.
Tumblr media
12) I love Kagura but she can be such a big CUTIE ALL THE DAMN TIME.
Tumblr media
13) I debated for a few minutes even including this, since it is most definitely NOT a favorite moment, but it was so memorably disgusting, I had to honor it somehow. Vomit.
Tumblr media
14) Sougo straight up laying claim to Kagura.
Tumblr media
15) THE PRINCE.
Tumblr media
16) I love this scene so much, I think I devoted my life to OkiKagu because of it.
Tumblr media
17) !!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
18) First time I saw this, I am positive I screamed “NOOOO HIS FACE!!!!”.
Tumblr media
19) Again, more screaming about Sougo’s beautiful face being ruined. Kagura’s brutal. But that’s why she’s THE QUEEN.
Tumblr media
20) I didn’t properly pay tribute to the BEAUTIFUL new ending credits for this arc last night because I’m obviously brain damaged so I thought I’d make up for it tonight. Lots of nekkidness but these were of course my favorite.
SHIPS TALLY:
Okita x Kagura: might as well title this episode OkiKagu Maximum.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Hijikata: Gin-chan entrusted Toshi with his precious plate! How freaking sweet was that????
Tumblr media
Kondou x Otae: naturally since Kondou was totally there to get back his gal (who doesn’t want him...yet).
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Otae: even he acknowledges his own siscon-ness so who am I to ignore it?
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Okita: wonder what they did when they went off together.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Kagura: she was very concerned about Gin-chan.
Tumblr media
Hijikata x Okita: Sougo’s faith in Hijikata’s victory was touching.
Tumblr media
Kyuubei x Otae: they didn’t have any scenes together but since Tae-chan was basically learning to be a proper Yagyuu clan wife, they were technically one step away from being canon.
Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just completely unbelievably amazing.  It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s immense generosity that I am able enjoy Gintama on an extra another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that. GINTAMA IS LIFE AND LOVE.

PART 1. GINTAMA IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Before I start let me warn you that everything below is my own opinion and come from some research that I have done. My main references are Wikipedia and the historical youtube channels: Let's Ask Shogo, and Linfamy. I am but an armchair historian who's just started dipping their toes in the fascinating and chaotic history of Japan. Take everything I say with a grain of salt. To be honest I'm just copying information I find on the internet and creating arguments which will hopefully make sense.
In this essay, I delve into the historical context behind Edo in Gintama world and where Sakata Gintoki seem to fit in the social order.
This is the first of three part series of essays.
PART 2 SHIMURA FAMILY IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT
PART 3 MARTIAL SKILLS OF TAE SHIMURA
Read at your own risk.
Gintama is a weird hybrid mix of
Late Edo Period / Late Tokugawa Shogunate Period (18th-19th century
Bakumatsu Period (1853-1867): Decline and Downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate when Japan ended its isolationist foreign policy known as sakoku and changed from a feudal Tokugawa shogunate to the modern empire of the Meiji government. The major ideological-political divide during this period was between the pro-imperial nationalists called ishin shishi and the shogunate forces, which included the elite shinsengumi swordsmen.
Meiji Restoration policies (1868-1912) specifically the dissolution of the shogunate and samurai class and decline of traditional martial arts in favor of western warfare.
Post WW2 japanese economic miracle (1946-1954) - seen in the rapid increase in trade and commerce brought upon by foreign investors.
Early 2000's - because they had flipphones with SMS and computers, etc
Space Travel and Interstellar transportation.
Social classes in the Edo Period/Tokugawa Shogunate were divided into 4 (or 6) stratas.
Tumblr media
A. FIGUREHEAD/ NOMINAL RULING COURT
Emperor
Court Nobility
B. MILITARY LEADER AND ACTUAL RULING CLASS
Shogun - Shigeshige, Sadasada
Daimyo (feudal lord) - subdivided into 3 classes (shinpan, fudai, tozama)
Nobunobu (heir to shogun because he came from one of the shinpan daimyos),
Matsudaira Katakuriko (based from Matsudaira Katamori who was shinpan daimyo of Aizu),
Yagyuu Koshinori (based from Yagyu Tajima no Munenori, the minor fudai daimyo of Nara)
All daimyos and their families were required by law to reside in Edo. Top Daimyos in particular lived in Edo for one year and in their provincial dominion in the next year. They made the cumbersome travel from edo and their provincial domain in alternate years which is very annoying and expensive. This was one the methods how the shogunate kept the peace. Keeping the daimyos' wives and children in the capital as hostages in their estates meant that they won't become too powerful in the provinces.
Samurai
further subdivided depending on their salary (koku stipend). Many worked as retainers for the daimyos and their clans- ex. Shimura, Takasugi, Katsura, Hijikata, Kondou, Hattori, Toujo and the other top samurais of Yagyuu clan.
became civil servants and bureaucrats - Hasegawa
Special Samurai that were direct vassals of shogun were called Hatamoto - in late Edo period, all top Shinsengumi officials became Hatamoto samurai.
Accdg to Gintama world, only the samurai/bakufu officials were allowed to bear swords. The 10-20 years of struggle between shogunate and Joui rebel factions deemed samurai too dangerous. Dojos closed down because there was no use for kenjutsu anymore and samurai became scarce.
In reality, Edo period/Tokugawa Shogunate had very strict gun laws. Peasants/merchants were only allowed guns for hunting and pest control. Samurais were allowed firearms though. Aside from possessing firearms, only samurais were allowed the distinction of carrying two swords: katana and wakizashi on their person at all times.
During the Meiji restoration, the shogunate and samurai class were dissolved and a national army based on western warfare was established. Jutsu or martial arts fell into decline as an unpopular reminder of the past. To prevent the various martial art cultures from being lost completely, they were converted into "Do" (meaning 'The Way'), focusing more on following perfection in mind and self rather than for purely militaristic self-defense or attack. Hence many Jutsu schools became Dojo ("place for the Way").
C. PEASANTS
meaning farmers, etc.
Samurai who did not want to be retainers became peasants. This social class lived in the daimyos' rural provinces and is the main source of tax (rice). This class became wealthy and powerful in the Late Edo Period.
D. CRAFTSMENT/ARTISANS - provided weapons and supplies to the shogunate. Ex. Gengai, Tetsuko the Blacksmith
E. MERCHANTS Tatsuma, Ikumatsu, Okita Mitsuba's fiance, family of Hasegawa's wife, Otose (?)
Merchants were considered the lowest in the social class because they handled money. However In later half of Edo period, farmers and merchant classes became very rich due to trade. Compared to Samurai class who had to strictly adhere to buddhist and neo-confuncian teachings of frugality and disdain for wealth, the fact that farmers and merchants handled products and money daily, gave them a bit more freedom. These families became so powerful while many of lower ranked samurais lived in poverty. By the way irl Edo period, merchants and peasants can wield bladed weapons shorter than a katana. Wakizashis and Tantos were popular for self defense!
6. OUTSIDE SOCIAL CLASSES - had professions that were considered taboo by Buddhism. These lower classes were only allowed in special quarters of the city and have to wear specific types of clothing.
Eta - "Dirty" coz they handled blood and death (ex. butchers, tanners, undertakers)
Hinin - "not even human" coz they cleaned up human waste (ex. town guards, street cleaners, executioners)
others - considered the lowest social class and are only allowed in specific quarters of the urban areas (ex. beggars, entertainers, prostitutes) - Hinowa, Tsukuyo, etc.
many of these outside social classes will later evolve into the burakumin, a heavily marginalized "caste" of japanese society which still exist to this day.
ABOUT EDO AND GINTAMA'S VERSION OF IT
Only the peasants/farmers lived in the rural areas. Samurai, craftsmen and merchants lived in the urban centers that were built around daimyo castles, each restricted to their own quarter.
I believe this is why Edo was the setting for Gintama. The place was the seat of military and economic power for the shogunate. As mentioned, all the daimyos lived in the area as well as their top retainers. This is why the Shigeshige, Matsudaira, Yagyuu and Hattori leaders were all found in one place.
In Gintama we can also see why many characters lived in Special wards like Kabukichou and Yoshiwara. Crafters, merchants, entertainers, businessmen for Kabukichou and the prostitutes are in Yoshiwara.
SAKATA GINTOKI
In reality, Sakata Gintoki would be considered a (1) beggar as a kid, gained prestige as a powerful (2) ronin or runaway samurai as a teenager (see notes) and then became a (3) merchant class as an adult. He was an orphan with dubious origins and he obtained education and kenjutsu training smh from a terakoya/temple school. Temple schools were more commonly attended by peasant and merchant families. Landless samurais like Shoyo and Kondou's monkey master usually taught in these.
Gintoki was really technically not allowed to bear a katana in public if we were talking in historical terms. Him carrying a bokuto is fine both in context of the show and in reality though, since he's basically still a fugitive and shouldn't draw attention of the bakufu to himself.
NOTES:
I didn't expect this to be a historical infodump but here we are. I learned a lot though. I never had that much interest in Edo Period / Meiji restoration before but I needed to research for this.
Sorachi says Gintoki is a real samurai, so maybe there may have been a retainer clan that went by that surname and only gintoki survived. HOWEVER Gintoki never served under any daimyo/feudal lord so he cannot be a samurai by law, therefore he cannot be ronin either. Idk. In gintama, everyone can be their own samurai if they have bushido in their heart lol.
