whats something youve watched/read recently that had a nice whumpy moment in it?

Hmmmmm... Besides the obvious answer of fanfiction, I would have to say the My Happy Marriage anime on Netflix! (It's also a manga!! And a live-action movie!)

It's very much like a Cinderella story, but with the twist of arranged marriage and paranormal themes. Set in 19th-century Meiji Restoration era Japan. Miyo Saimori, the female lead, grew up in an abusive and neglectful household. In spite of being the eldest daughter and being of Noble status, she's treated as lesser than a servant in her own home. Her father arranges for her to be married off to a commander in the military, Kiyoka Kudo, who is widely rumored to be cruel and has not kept a fiancée for more than three days. Miyo learns that she's not a magnet for hatred, and Kiyoka gradually learns that he can bring happiness to others.

This anime is probably my favorite because it has soft, comfy vibes, yet still manages to have some nice whump material too!

There's "light" torture during this. I don't really care for torture sequences, but it was written well enough that I didn't feel the ick. (also, kudos to Kaya's voice actress for the infuriated scream. If you watch it, you'll know what I mean)

perrie is a pc in a ttrpg campaign ive been in forrrr. four years. but he also generally exists as an oc in the spaces between stuff. he has two partners (both also pcs) and they all love each other beyond words except for the fact that shit literally cannot stop happening to all of them at any given time.

their lives are tied to this fuckin. book. and theyre all technically sort of paranormal investigators, but more than that they just live in a magic house. lived. see. perries father is a nightmare, one of his partners mother is a nightmare, and his other partners Guy Who Raised Her sucks also. a hitman tried to kill them, they ended up in jail because perries father has political sway, and then his partners mom made one partner stab the other one and took him away and left the stabbed partner in a coma.

this is not the first time shit has Happened Like This. they are constantly being kidnapped or near killed or ripped away from each other violently.

perrie himself grew up in a very cold household. his mother died young and his father worked. he more or less raised himself. hes a very compassionate person, but struggles to express that. he also blames himself for things that are absolutely not his fault. he does this often. "hes the healer", he reasons. "he should know better -- do better".

hes got the little eyes because his abilities revolve around the concept of knowing, speculating, and making art out of ideas. theyre typically shut in thought but can snap open after significant use of his abilities or in times of great emotion. hes in his mid to late twenties but already going grey because of stress. he loves poetry but is often to shy to share it. the clothes hes wearing are not his own because his own are all either burned to the ground or covered in his lovers blood. including a scarf that was core to his identity up until that point.

perrie didnt understand the idea of home until he was with his partners in the place that they called that. hes not sure what home will ever look like again now that things are such a mess. he keeps moving, despite. trying to regain a grasp on his life. holding people as close as he can and searching desperately for those still out of reach.

missa had been at the scene where the bunnies "died" with the raccoons (that had actually robbed him once lol) so bad got scared and stepped in to scare missa away so he woudnt tell anyone (he did end up telling phil via book about how bad was scary and we got the “my missa” moment which was a W for pissers) (pissers are missa and phil shippers. important context) ANYWAYS the next day he seemed to know nothinf about scaring missa (so thats halo) ans then assumedly later when bobinho threatens to have him arrested bad fronts and eventually kills bobinho and then logs off the server before logging back on and rediscovering bobinhos corpse and knowing nothing about it and being like “oh poor bobinho :(” and that was like a canon switch.

(its his soul (irradiated edition)) purgatory 2 happens somewhere in there i think. eggs are back btw. (this arc lasted for like 9 months btw. 9 MONTHS) (he alowly died and lost his memory for 9 months. what the hell.) The Barbarian keeps rolling around my brain so I have many many thoughts under the cut

1. I saw someone talk about the house itself having layers and yes absolutely, the house and the different men we meet represent rape culture in a very literal sense. We start at the top of the iceberg in the house with Keith's "i wont take no for an answer" and not believing Tess about the basement because women who are upset just arent to be believed, and then AJs and then Frank in escalating worseness as we delve deeper into the house.

2. On the Mother ultimately being a victim but still being the monster who Tess has to kill, I actually think it does a lot about how you are raised and how that shapes what you think is normal and the harm you do. Again we start with Keith who is slightly traditional and says its "how i was raised", then we have AJ at the bar with a very old friend and went he tells him he had to "persuade" this girl and "yeah she said no at the start but like totally not by the end you know" his friend agrees and doesn't think thats rape. Basically, if you dont do the extra work to unlearn what youve been brought up to think is normal, you will absolutely inflict harm and be part of rape culture because thats how society currently is. (Clearly we dont hear about frank but if hes the type for 70s rapist/serial killer firstly is a very sexist society and secondly hes parents are 90% likely to be abusive, that combo is what made most serial killers from the 60s-80s). And the thing is despite being raised that way despite thinking it was normal AJ still deserves to be punished for harming that woman because he still did harm. And the mother doesnt know any better but she will still hurt Tess if Tess let her.

3. The final scene where Tess doesnt let her empathy stop her from thinking about herself for once is very important! Over and over she has thought about other people and got herself kidnapped and hurt for it over and over. So at the end when we still the Mothers incredibly human eyes for the very first time up close, and seeing how she cares, and its meant to pull on your heart strings, and Tess says I dont care what you want because Im going to think about me first. Clearly theres a gender gap not addressed (god i wished she got to kill AJ) but it works if we think of the Mother as the concept of distilled rape culture rather than a real person

4. I loved seeing the mechanics of the script happening in the real time. The story of the director writing himself into a corner 30 pages in and thats why the mother shows up in her first scene (i think thats why Frank shoots himself, like straight up wrote himself into another corner and goes fuck it Frank shoots himself).

5. I saw someone else didnt like the shift to AJs storyline but i really liked it, most horror movies have a hard time with pacing so they either start reallyyyyy slowly (peele) or just try to keep the suspense and terror up the whole time and theres always a flat bit in the middle and you get desensitised to it all and stop caring (halloween.....all of them). So i loved this take of doing it all again but from a completely opposite POV, normally they wouldve run the storylines concurrently so having it 1 and then 2 was just really interesting and pretty bold

6. I cannot tell you how many horror movies ive seen where the closing shot is a wide shot of the house/maze/town whatever of the final girl, and its all lit up with red/blue cop lights. Like thats normally when the film ends, when the cops show up we roll credits. So to have just the most unhelpful, apathetic, fucking rude cops cops instead was cool. I didnt even find them to be over the top (sometimes movies when theyre trying to do a 'cops suck' segment make them caricatures of villainy or bafoonery rather than making then real), but to have their very casual but unflinching demand of respect to themselves from everyone above all else, not seeing a filthy terrified woman with no possesions at all as anything unusual but a broken window thats for sure a crime. Yeah that was scary real, really well done.

7. It felt very classic horror with enough modern twists to keep it grounded in this year without being overbearing about it. Like when horror films are trying a bit too hard with that its just very sighhhhh (like in halloween 2018 they had a teen boy say out loud "i like you that means im gonna get some right??" Like no one talks like that whereas AJs version of events sounds like something a real person would say). And the house with a monster in its walls has absolutely been done before and yet watching this felt fresh bc it was playing on your expectations of the genre.

For a horror debut from a guy whose background is 2000s comedy I think he did really really good! Looking forward to what else he does

Okay, but this is going to be long because there's a lot of context required to understand exactly what Dorman is lol

Dorman is the first-born son of Arthur Pendragon and Merlin (yes this is canon in the novel lol), so when he was born he was mostly just a normal human child.

Now in my lore, Merlin is a true immortal (meaning, arguably, nothing can kill him and he will survive The Fall of the Universe) and his soul is literally made of magic; he was just born this way and no one knows why. Anomalies are a pretty big theme in these books lol.

Arthur has a Perpetually Pure soul, which just means no actions he takes in life will cause his soul to become tainted, and he, ultimately, has a kind, and caring personality, so he's not likely to willingly do anything that would taint his soul anyway. Arthur was the first Perpetually Pure soul born in Beauty's Universe (the current one).

Now, Dorman wasn't born out of love or anything, although Arthur and Merlin do get together later on in the books and have three more children, but that's a whole different post. The details haven't exactly been worked out, but a small group of the Main Cast do end up getting captured by Um'Qua, a secondary Antagonist and Embodiment of Limbo (basically the Ghost King), who gets his kicks out of torturing people (this is also a common character arch-type in the books, just to varying degrees lol) and is dangerously obsessed with Mieliaru (we'll get to her).

Anyway, long story short, Um'Qua forces Arthur and Merlin to have sex, Merlin becomes pregnant, and Dorman is born, all within Um'Qua's captivity. There comes a point during their captivity where Merlin (or Arthur, it may be Arthur, actually) says something that really pisses Um'Qua off, and he retaliates by snapping infant Dorman's neck.

Overcome with grief, Merlin is at risk of a Magical Fallout (basically popping from emotional duress), so Mieliaru, who is Merlin's 74 billion-year-old Dragon Mount, emerges from where she hides around Merlin's spirit and breathes life back into Dorman, but at a price; Dorman is no longer human.

They don't learn the true extent of what Mie has done (Mie knows, but Mie's English is shaky at best and doesn't know how to explain it) until months later when the children are much older (the magical influence in the group causes the children to age rapidly until around 16 where they slow down. This is explained in the books), when Dorman and Tetsuya get kidnapped by a Trafficker named Malik, who has a Perpetually Tainted soul.

Dorman is sassy, stubborn, and mouthy like his parents, and Malik ends up poisoning him with something called The Dragon's Bane, which is a flower Tebius (main antagonist) created, and it is capable of killing even Voidlings by attacking the soul at it's core. This trauma causes Dorman's Altered Soul to awaken in defence of the Poison, and Dorman becomes more powerful than a Voidling, but basically loses all ability to feel.

Drakaerys (Cosmic Entity of Power and Creator of the First Universe) birthed Mieliaru as it exists by accident. They never meant to create something more powerful than them, let alone something that could create things more powerful than them, but Cosmic Entities oopsing and creating things more powerful than they are is also a common theme. Limitless power means on occasion you accidentally fart out a nuke lol Sakura's (Cosmic Entity of Beauty) nuke was Tebius, Drakaerys' nuke was Mieliaru; the Dragon's Bane and the Altered are the Fallout from those nukes.

So long story short, Dorman is Altered. That's it. He's was just revived wrong. It just so happens that he was revived wrong by the Oldest living non-Voidling creature in existence who happens to be more powerful than the Cosmic Entity of Power. He is literally running on a tiny piece of Mieliaru's Soul.
