Because I feel like it.
Tumblr media
Yellow sky? Bare footed characters? Mostly a mess? Over exaggerating some of the Hispanic features. I saw the first episode, and it was just poorly written in general. And what mother calls their son "cochinada." Roughly translates to dirty or trash.
What's good Latino/Hispanic representation?
Colombian 🇨🇴
Tumblr media
In the Caribbean region of Colombia, they light up candles and lanterns on December 8, before sunrise. So the candle giving them magic was a wonderful detail. Generational trauma is a thing for us Latinos, and this film handled it in a healthy and matuer manner. And I love how they didn't shy away with how Spaniards attacked and colonized latin lands.
Mexicans 🇲🇽
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, us Mexicans love death. 🤣 But hey, I was always taught to respect death, La Muerte, and our ancestors. So, it makes sense that many Mexican films talk about death. But I also like that Maya and the Three have Aztec, Mayan, and Incan mythology. Natives to Mexico.
Dominican Puerto Rican 🇩🇴🇵🇷
Tumblr media
Luz mom is Dominican, and Luz dad is Puerto Rican. I appreciate a good interracial couple and a mixed child. Luz name also translates to light, and some Latinos are known for doing witch craft. Or at least knowledgeable about witches and demons, and no, we aren't evil. We just know how to handle this stuff. Plus, the owl has many meanings in Latino culture. To some, I believe the owl is a messenger of death and is telling everyone that death/danger is near.
Afro Latino. Puerto Rican 🇵🇷
Tumblr media
I am a massive sucker for interracial couples and mixed kids because of this. I was working at a hispanic store as a cashier. This woman walks past me and starts talking to the bagger. The bagger has blond hair, blue eyes, and white skin. The bagger looks at me worried because she doesn't speak English. So brown skin, black hair, me has to tell the bagger that the lady wanted ice in Spanish. I then talked to the lady in English. Her reaction? "YOU SPEAK ENGLISH!" Same for a dark skinned man. So many people skip me and talk to him in English. He's Dominican, and he only spoke Spanish. I appreciate films that show Latinos in different skin types and features. We're not all brown. So yeah, the mass diversity in this film is just beautiful. And I love how they wrote Miles relationship with his parents. Realistic conflict and healthy communication. Not falling into toxic stereotypes.
Spainard Puss 🇪🇸 Mexican Kitty & Perrito 🇲🇽
Tumblr media
Spaniards are considered Hispanic but not Latinos like Mexicans. And again, interracial couples for the win. And I love the realism in their romance that heals through healthy therapy. Many people see Mexicans as toxic, so having Perrito as a therapist and the one helping everyone emotionally, it's nice. Not every Mexican is toxic. And I love how you can tell their Spanish and Mexican even though their animals. Puss Spanish accent, Spanish actor, him being a ginger like some Spaniards, flamingo dancing, and gazpacho. Kitty, Mexican accent, Mexican actress, black fur/hair like most Mexicans, quinceañera, and I love how they gave her a luchador mask. Something that originates from Mexico. Also, my brother and I joke how we as Mexiacns can't swim and Kitty nearky drowns in the 1st film. 🤣 Perrito, he's a chihuahua with a Mexican actor. Enough said. I also want to say death is Brazilian because of his actor.
I don't know much about Spanish culture, but someone said the wishing star has a connection to Spanish culture. Is that true? If so, COOL! Because death is connected to Mexican culture. So, Dreamworks finding a way to combine Spanish and Mexican culture in one film is 100% magical.
There are many more, like Beverly Hills Chihuahua 🇲🇽. 🤣 That film is better than Primos. Emperor's New Groove, Peru 🇵🇪, and Rio, Brazil 🇧🇷. Not Hispanic but Latino culture. But this post is getting long. Primos! A huge step down in Latino/Hispanic representation. Especially since we have so many good films and shows that have proper representation.

Alright so the TOH brainrot has come back in full force after the finale came out so now i too am making one of them lists of things that i liked/stuck out to me. Also sorry if this ends up just being a bunch of incoherent nonsense
HOLY SHIT TITAN!LUZ. the design is so cool what more can i say. Furthermore,
HOLY FUCK LUZ DIED????? i was so not expecting that and good lord was it heartbreaking. Eda and King's reaction to Luz's death were also heartbreaking, and so was the Collector finally realizing what death really is. And oh my god puppet!Camila crying as the balls of light pass by her, showing us that she has had the realization that her daughter died. After the grief and trauma of losing Manny, Camila and Luz had a heart to heart which made their bond stronger than ever, only for Camila to lose Luz aswell.
LUZ SAID THE THING! NOW EAT THIS SUCKAAAAAA!!!!!
THE BOILING ISLES IS BIGENDER BABY! i honestly love the titan so much now. His bad girl coven t-shirt and glyph pants and dad-bod are absolutely everything. (Also what's with the little hooty worm sticking out of her eye socket??)
The goddamn bread pun 😭 that warms my heart so much
The raeda in this episode was IMMACULATE. I was really hoping for a kiss but i'm still happy with what WAD gave us. The loving stares, Raine's absolute joy when Eda and Titan!Luz came to their rescue in the throne room, the hugs and nuzzles, the cuddling in their new nest, etc. They seem so relaxed and happy at the end. The world has been saved and now they can finally live their lives together and rekindle their relationship. Oh and how could i forget the EARRING SWAP!! they're wearing eachother's earrings!!! I've seen quite a few ppl interpreting the exchanging of earrings/jewelry as a marriage custom in the demon realm, implying that Eda and Raine are married in the timeskip. I never cared much for the idea of raeda getting married but you know what? I like this headcanon.
Raine whistling raine's rhapsody/eda's reqiuem.
Hunter is a palisman carver! And he has a new palisman! Apparently the little blue jay's name is Waffles and that's just adorable.
Raine also has a palisman now and it's a little fox! I wonder what their name is though.
The entire hexsquad has matching Flapjack tattoos! Also Flapjack's grave, that gave me so many feels. But im so happy to see how Hunter has healed!
Harpy Lilith!
Eda is the principal of a school now?
Eda's hook arm! Also just everyone's new outfits/appearances in general. I love Raine's fully white hair and their scars and their outfit just oozes gender. I love Luz's outfit and punk eyeliner. I love Amity's hairstyle. I love how Lilith kept her short ginger hairstyle. I love Gus's new hair and his little beard. I love Willow's shorter hair and sporty outfit. Mattholomule has a real mustache now!
Fuck yeah they figured out how to remove sigils so now the BI residents can do magic like the Titan really intended!
Aladarius canon??
Everyone reuniting with their dads. Amity running to Alador whilst Odalia just stands at the side with an annoyed face. Fucking priceless. Willow's dads kissed on screen! Hunter thinking no one would be there for him only for Darius and Eberwolf to show up and accept him into their family. my heart 😭❤️
Eda and Camila finally got to meet!
Luz reuniting with King and Eda made me sob so unbelievably hard.
Luz and Vee graduated together!
Luz goes to college in the demon realm!
I thought she was giving all her Azura stuff away at first but i think she's actually bringing it all with her to college.
I love everything about Luz's quinceañera (or should i say KING-ceañera)
I love the very last part where every character we've come to know and love over these 3 wonderful years (except Odalia lmfao) say "Byeee!" to the audience. What a perfect way to end this series.
I think that's it lol i have so many thoughts

You know one thing that really annoys be about not having a full season 3 for The Owl House?
We probably would have had a birthday episode for Luz.
Well this is only speculation on my part, but I doubt we'll get one in season 2 going by the titles.
Now you may be wondering why is that an issue for me?
Because it would have been Luz' 15 birthday. Her Quinceañera party.
This is better known here in México but its also practiced in many latin america countries, including the Dominican Republic from where Luz' family decends.
Quinceañeras are not just a big party for a big party's sake they are an important moment, its when they go from girls to women, theres even religious ceremonies.
...an important part is the dance, a waltz, with family members.
It would have been cool to see that in an animated show.
...besides that one episode of Dora the Explorer.

I know people wanted the girls to be together but what I think they don't understand is that they ARE together, just not in the way we thought.
We wanted them to not separate after everything but if you think about it that is both actually really unhealty, even with the repaired friendship and character growth, and it was the original problem.
The girls forced themselves together for years and that strained their relationship, after Amphibia while I don't doubt they tried their best it was better to let themselved some space naturally.
Because their bind CAN survive it.
Do anyone of you really think that after everything they really would stop talking for 10 years?
Of course not!
They gave eachother space and time, because they know what they need now, and though the road was more roundabout than we, or even they would have liked.

Happy Birthday (pt 2)
This is part of my Four Years AU
AO3
Masterpost
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .
It was October thirteenth.
Luz’s first birthday without her mother.
She hadn’t told anyone what today was. She had mentioned it before, during the summer. But Eda and King weren’t known to be the best at remembering something so small from a single conversation.
They were already worried about her, it would only make things worse to remind them.
She saw the worried glances Eda and King gave her. Even Lilith looked concerned. Luz assured them she was fine before she holed up back in the library and, later, her room. Which she had made into makeshift into a study area.
Just because it was her birthday didn’t mean she had to stop trying. Even if it was her quinceañera.
‘Mamá must be worried.’ Her mind murmured.
‘She probably thinks you ran away.’ Added a snicker from the back of her mind. ‘She must think you hate her.’
Luz shook her head and hunched back over her papers. This wasn’t the time to mope and worry. This was the time for research! Even the words ran off the pages and her mind kept wandering.
‘You shouldn’t have gone through that door.’ Her thoughts spoke up again. ‘How bad could a reality check camp be, really? Would you really rather spend an eternity here, where your madre will never know if you're alive or dead?’
“Will you be quiet?” Luz snapped to no one.
‘Look at you,’ Her mind sneered back. ‘Talking to yourself. Maybe you did need that summer camp.’
Luz groaned and thunked her head on her desk, hands collapsing behind her neck. How was she supposed to work under these conditions?
She should’ve asked Gus to research with her. Out of all her friends, he was by far the most willing to spend all-nighters reading and searching for anything human. Any single link to the human realm.
This wasn’t to say Willow and Amity didn’t help her. They did, plenty of times. But it was always Gus she could call at two in the morning and ask to travel with her to some long-forgotten ruin on the slim chance it had even a sentence of human language on its stones. Amity was definitely a close second.
Everyone had tried. Even before the summer was over they had tried. Luz still beat herself up about not searching harder when she didn’t have to worry about her madre thinking she was lost somewhere. Every day that ticked by didn’t seem to bring her any closer to making it home.
The first week when summer vacation was over was horrible. Luz barely got any sleep and practically tore the library apart looking for any book on the human realm. She had crashed on the fifth day and slept all of the sixth. While she slept, her friends had taken up researching for her. Even Eda and King. Well, King tried. He couldn’t read all that well, but Lilith was happy to help.
Luz tried to at least get a few hours of sleep each day now. She still had bags under her eyes and her footsteps still dragged, but at least she wasn’t about to collapse anymore.
‘Mamá would tell you to go to sleep.’
Luz lifted her head and looked towards the window. It had originally been a hole in the wall courtesy of one of her recent adventures, so Eda had turned it into a wonky window instead of bothering to fix it up.
It was dusk. How had time gone by so fast?
Luz dug around in her desk for her glyphs and pulled out her light spell. She tapped the paper and it transformed into a small ball of light. She let it float next to her for a moment, simply watching it.
“She would like this spell.” Luz said to herself. “It doesn’t cost any bills to keep up.”
She almost laughed at her own joke. Almost.
‘Yeah, like she’d be proud of anything you did here.’
Luz sighed and turned back to the pages spread out before her. She stared blankly for a few moments, repeatedly telling herself to focus and failing to do so.
Then her bedroom door slammed open.
“LUZ!” King cried.
Luz yelped and shot backwards, tumbling out of her chair and hitting the wooden floor.
King winced and scurried over to where she lay, giving her a nervous look.
“Eh heh, sorry…”
“King! Don’t scare me like that!” Luz scolded, sitting up and rubbing her head.
“Sorry, but it’s important!” King said, waving his little arms. “Come on, come on!”
“Is something wrong?” Luz worried, standing up as King tugged on her cape.
“Well, no,” King said, still pulling her out of her room. “But it’s still important!”
Luz, more confused than ever, followed King as he finally let go of her cape and scampered down the stairs, practically shaking with excitement.
A part of Luz was expecting some prank he and Hooty had concocted. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for them these days.
Luz wandered down the stairs as King skittered towards the living room. She heard murmuring and frowned, slowing her steps until she was right by the doorway and peeked her head in, one hand resting on the doorframe.
Willow, Gus and Amity were sitting on the floor around the couch. They had pushed a table up in front of it. A cake sat on the table, and Amity was currently trying to stick in a candle shaped like a five next to the one shaped like a one, though was clearly having trouble as the candle was made of something very squirmy and kept shifting into something that looked more like a weird S.
Gus was trying to help contain the candle as Willow looked on with concern, holding a small square lidded box in her lap.
Eda and Lilith were sitting on the couch directing Gus and Amity with little success. As Lilith was also dealing with Hooty continuously bugging her with questions or whatever he ate outside that day.
King had just arrived and was now climbing onto the table, promptly freaking out everyone else who clearly didn’t expect him to be back so soon.
“Guys…?” Luz blinked, taking a step into the room.
Everyone's heads whirled around to her, none of them having expected her to make it downstairs faster than they anticipated.
Hooty, as per usual, was the first to break the silence.
“Hi, Luz!” He greeted. “We made a cake!”
“You didn’t do anything!” Lilith snapped. “All you did was be a lookout. A very lousy one, at that!”
“Hey! I deserve credit for doing something!”
“What...is all this?” Luz asked, deciding it was better to cut in before Lilith and Hooty started arguing again.
“What does it look like, kid?” Eda snorted, snatching the five candle from Amity and sharply sticking it into the cake, making it lopsided and causing clear distress to Amity’s OCD.
“This is what human birthdays look like, right?” Gus worried, sitting upright and putting his hands on the table. “Was there supposed to be streamers? I knew we should’ve gotten streamers,” He grumbled.
“No, no, it’s just…” Luz looked over everyone before her eyes landed on Eda and King, who had hopped onto the couch beside her.
“You...remembered?” She asked quietly.
“Of course we did! The King of Demons never forgets!” King said proudly.
“Yesterday you forgot that you drank your own apple blood and threw a fit because you thought someone else drank it.” Amity deadpanned.
“That was one time!”
“Happy birthday, Luz.” Willow said, gesturing for her to sit down and setting the small box on the table.
Luz slowly walked towards the table, sitting on her knees at the end of the table. Still stunned, she slid the gift closer to her and pulled off the lid.
Inside it was a book. It was dark blue with golden lining along the edges. It’s title in gold cursive read; Glyph Spells & Other Written Magic .
“Thought you could use one of those,” Willow said casually. “Since you’ve got your own students to teach now.”
“We all pitched in for it,” Eda said gleefully.
Amity gave the witch a very pointed glare. One that Eda sighed in response to.
“Alright, we all pitched in to look for it. Little Miss Rich over here paid for it.” She relented, pointing a thumb towards the girl.
“I tasted it!” Hooty added happily. “It tastes like old dust and death.”
Luz carefully lifted the book out of the box. It seemed like well-kept book. Though the frantic scratches among the cover here and there proved that it had likely been quickly cleaned before placed in the box. The pages were yellow and crinkled, and there was the occasional stain or tear. But overall, it wasn’t unreadable.
“Do you…” Amity swallowed. “Like it?”
Luz kept her eyes on the book for a few quiet seconds. She pulled the book close to her chest and lifted her head, trying and failing to fight back the tears welling in her eyes.
“I love it.” She said hoarsely, a wide smile stretched across her face.
Everyone in the room visibly relaxed, shoulders sagging.
“Does this mean we can have cake now?” King asked, impatiently tugging on Eda’s dress. “I’m starving!”
“Nope!” Hooty chirped, his head popped up beside Luz and startled her. “It’s group hug time!”
“Wait, wait, Hooty NO--!”
Hooty was faster than any of them could react and wrapped around them all, pulling them into a tight ball with Luz squished in the middle.
“A little more warning next time?” Gus wheezed from where he was currently being suffocated by the insistent bird tube.
“The cake!” Willow exclaimed.
Everyone craned their necks downwards towards the table.
Sure enough, amongst the struggle to get everyone in a circle, the cake had been knocked off the table and onto the floor, completely smashed against the carpet.
Everyone stared at it for a few moments.
“Floor cake!” King exclaimed. “The best kind of food!”
Nobody knew who laughed first, but it wasn’t long before everyone had smiles on their faces. Now, it didn’t seem to matter how human they made her party.
“Thanks, guys.” Luz said once she’d calmed down. “I...I think I needed this.”
“Any time, Luz.” Eda smiled.
Luz giggled and looked towards the stained windows of the Owl House. She could already hear Lilith and King arguing with Hooty again, probably to put them down, but it was tuned out.
The sky was completely dark now. And though the sky back home looked different than in the Boiling Isles, Luz couldn’t help but wonder if her mom was looking up at the stars, too.
She glanced back to her friends, still not processing any of the arguments or conversations they were having as they tried to free themselves from Hooty.
Yeah, she’d be okay.
Luz smiled and relaxed. Even if her mom didn’t know where she was, Luz could at least rest assured that she’d make it home, eventually. And she’d have real friends helping her out.
‘Keep that light on until I get there, mamá.’ She silently asked.
‘Te veré pronto.’

And now it’s Yolanda’s turn to have a headcanon post! @freckledpianoman and me wanted to contribute more Yolanda Montez content to the tags now that the season finale has aired:
Yolanda’s family follows Mexican naming conventions so her full name is Yolanda Pilar Montez Zurita. Montez is her father’s last name while Zurita is her mother’s maiden name. And yes, Zurita is for Juan Zurita
Nicknames are also a tradition in the Montez family. Yolanda’s parents called her mija and nena before their estrangement while her maternal grandmother and her little brother call her by her diminutive name, Yoyi
Courtney’s absolutely delighted when she first hears Yolanda’s abuelita call her Yoyi. She thinks it’s adorable. Yolanda just fondly rolls her eyes when Court whisper yells Yoyi at her all starry eyed
She’s third generation Mexican American. Her maternal grandparents, the Zuritas were originally from Puebla and they came to Blue Valley in the 1970s where their daughters, Maria and Mimi (Yolanda’s mom and aunt) were born and raised. Yolanda grew up speaking Spanish, but she’s not fluent like her parents. She sometimes blanks out trying to remember certain words
“Man, I don’t even know how to begin explaining this in Spanish.”
Yolanda admits that she’s not much of a cook, but she grew up helping her abuelita make traditional dishes and as a result the only two dishes that Yolanda’s capable of making are mole poblano and chiles en nogada
She shares these recipes with Beth and they eventually start cooking together in Beth’s kitchen while Chuck blares music requests in the background
Yolanda usually wears her hair in double braids because her abuelito used to braid her hair in the morning before school. He always claimed that braids were the one style he could confidently do out of all the hairstyles that Yolanda’s abuelita taught him
She does start branching out after Courtney and Beth start helping her experiment with different hairstyles. Yolanda does styles like half up or regular space buns, topknots, braided low ponytails, and she rarely wears her hair down
Courtney once accidentally dyed Yolanda’s hair red when she was trying to give her highlights. Artemis helped fixed it (thanks to the time she accidentally went blonde for a month) but Yolanda ended up with ombre hair for a few weeks
For her quinceañera, Yolanda took inspiration from old photos of her abuelita and silver screen bombshells from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema
Yolanda started learned how to box from her abuelito when she was nine. He was a former lightweight boxing champion in Puebla and he taught boxing classes at a school that he founded with a fellow boxer (who Yolanda later discovers to be Henry Grant, the first Wildcat’s father) after he retired. It became their bonding time
He died when she was fourteen and she joined the Blue Valley High boxing team as a way to honour his memory. She even adopted his boxing nickname, The Mauler
Boxing wasn’t the only sport that she did growing up. Yolanda’s mom signed her up for ballet classes when she was in kindergarten and she was good enough to attend summer classes at the American Ballet Academy during middle school, starring in a few small productions like Coppélia and The Taming of the Shrew
She was forced to quit ballet after the fallout with Cindy leaking her pics and she was closed off for weeks because she missed dancing. After joining the JSA, Beth invited her to sit in on her ballroom dance lesson because “I know it’s not ballet exactly, but you get antsy if you don’t dance, I totally get that”
Yolanda only intended to go to the one lesson, but after partnering up with Beth for a not-so-serious tango and laughing harder than she has for months, she went back to the next lesson. And the next one and by the time the fourth lesson rolls around, Yolanda decides to sign up for the same classes as Beth
Yolanda can eat spicy food as long as there’s just ground spices in it, but she cannot handle chilies, much to her dismay. Every time she accidentally eats one, her eyes water and you can literally see her trying to hold in her reaction going, “nope, I’m not gonna do this, I’m not going to have my ancestors laugh their collective asses off just because I can’t handle a damn pepper”
She eventually caves when Courtney and Beth offer her their chocolate milk
Because she was raised Catholic, Yolanda has a habit of eating fish and shellfish instead of meat on Fridays. Fridays are when the JSA go out to eat instead of staying in the cafeteria and it’s Yolanda’s day to indulge in seafood. Courtney is still surprised how Yolanda can put away two giant king crabs like it’s no big deal, their bodies alone are bigger than Rick’s face
Yolanda’s favourites are coconut curry steamed clams, grilled shrimp, and the crab boil, all washed down with a raspberry lemon agua fresca
Her love for seafood has earned her an annoying, yet affectionate nickname from her cousins, “fish head”
“Mauler Montez, huh? You should’ve gone with El Mero, it’s much more on the nose.”
Courtney and Beth are the only people that Yolanda will share her seafood feast with because a) she gets to feed Beth for once and b) she knows how much Courtney loves shrimp
Rick can starve and Artemis keeps getting her hand smacked away every time she tries to sneak food
“It was one freaking scallop!” “Aren’t you allergic? Do you want to break out into hives again?”
When Beth first brought Artemis to sit at the loser’s table, Yolanda was a little wary of her because she’s known for tackling football players twice her height and she’s pretty sure her parents are Sportsmaster and Tigress. Now Yolanda and Artemis are snarky, overly competitive friends who arm wrestle and and have each others’ backs on the football team
Artemis managed to convince Yolanda to join as an alternate member since football season is right after boxing season and the team could use more girls
Artemis is still trying to convince Beth and Courtney to join as well
“You guys need something other than the JSA, you can get all your frustrations out in football.”
Courtney and Beth drag Rick to games to cheer them on
They both have huge sweet tooths and Artemis is constantly trying to steal the tres leches cake and chocolate flan that Yolanda brings to school. And it’s often a race to get the last one of whatever baked good Beth has brought with her that day
And as huge tomboys as they are, Yolanda and Artemis are arguably the best at doing makeup out of all the girls. Artemis likes experimenting with eyeliner and smokey eyeshadows while Yolanda knows a lot about lip products thanks to her abuelita, who rocks red lipstick and berry flavoured lip gloss well into her seventies
Yolanda means “violet” and she was named as such because her landscape architect mother was working on a Phillipine violet garden during her pregnancy and there was a pot of Persian violets in the OBGYN’s office the day the Montezes found out they were having a girl
Even the earrings that her grandparents gave Yolanda for her first communion were a pair of violet shaped stud earrings
Her abuelita even gave her a pressed violet pendant choker for her fifteenth birthday
Yolanda is a huge horror movie fan. It was a tradition that she shared with her dad since no one else in the family can stand them. Now she keeps trying to get Beth to watch horror movies with her despite the “Halloween only tradition” because Beth’s the only other person who would survive a horror movie
Beth spends half the time clinging to Yolanda when they’re not booing at horror cliches and trying to predict which character is dying next while berating fictional life choices
Courtney and Rick are in the other room pouting, trying and failing to catch up on homework
On the flip side, Beth makes Yolanda watch cartoons with her after horror movies because between school and the JSA, they need other ways to relax and unwind. Yolanda ends up loving The Owl House
“I started watching it because Luz looks like me. I kept watching because it’s so good.” “Yolanda! You did get hooked, you big nerd!”
Beth also finds out that Yolanda is also really into She-Ra, which may or may not have to do with how Catra and Adora look like Yolanda and Courtney. Beth doesn’t stop grinning and nudging her for the rest of the night when she sees Yolanda blushing over Catra and Adora
“You guys could dress up as them for Halloween!”
Despite their different tastes, they both enjoy true crime and history shows. They’re both fans of Drunk History and the Drunk Mystery Halloween episodes
And Beth is surprised to learn that Yolanda has a soft spot for period dramas as well. The both love Hidden Figures and The Personal History of David Copperfield
Yolanda is what Artemis likes to refer to as a distinguished bi. She knew that she was bi since she was fourteen when her abuelito pointed out that the way she acted around the very pretty ballerina in her dance class was the exact same as the way she acted around the very charming baseball player
“Abuelito, oh my god! Did anyone else notice?” “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, mija. You just have very good taste in people, just like your Tia Mimi.” “Tia Mimi likes girls too?”
And thus, her abuelito technically became the first person she came out to
She’s out to only two other people in her family, her little brother and her abuelita. It’s not like her parents would be disappointed in her for being bisexual (the congregation that the Montezes go to is fairly open) but Yolanda wasn’t able to talk with them about it because of her estrangement with them
Whenever she gets a crush on someone, she does this little honking laugh that makes Rick look at her in a mix of horror and confusion
“What the hell, is that your laugh? Stop flirting and help me find Hootie before Beth finds out he’s missing.”
It’s what clues him in to Yolanda’s crush on Courtney
Due to her estrangement from her parents, Yolanda didn’t think about having a quinceañera, but the JSA decides to throw her one with help from Yolanda’s abuelita, Socorro “Coco” Zurita, who’s played by Adriana Barraza. Aside from Tia Mimi who’s played by Marisa Ramirez and Yolanda’s cousins Josefa and Charo, played by Lee Rodriguez and Herizen Guardiola, Abuelita Coco is pretty much the only other family member besides Alex who still talks with her and she will make sure that her granddaughter has a wonderful quinces
Yolanda was never really a big fan of big, poofy dresses because they remind her of the itchy netted dresses that she had to wear for her first communion and other big church events she had to go to as a kid. So Beth and abuelita Coco decide to surprise her by making a skirted jumpsuit instead
And while she doesn't wear heels that often, joining Beth at her dance classes helps ensure that she rocks the Wildcat blue shoes that Courtney picks out for her
Beth, Courtney, and Artemis all pitch in to get a cat eye necklace for Yolanda to wear at her quinces. Yolanda denies crying when they give it to her
“Are you crying?” “It’s my allergies acting up, no big deal.”
And instead of the father-daughter dance, the JSA just converges on Yolanda for one big slow group dance One Day at a Time style
Yolanda and Courtney have more than a few slow dances together
She has nicknames for everyone in the JSA. Courtney is Shooting Star, Beth is Sunshine, Artemis is Hawkeye, and Rick is John Bender
“Seriously, Yolanda? You couldn’t have been more creative.” “Would you rather I call you One Minute Man?” “Ugh, just don’t say it in front of Beth.”
Yolanda knows so many Selena songs by heart because abuelita Coco is a huge fan. She grew up singing along to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom and Como La Flor and it’s almost a Pavlovian response to sing along to a Selena song whenever she hears one on the radio during JSA car trips
Courtney and Beth totally sing along with her while Artemis heckles them and Rick just groans and tells the girls to keep it down when he’s trying to drive
Yolanda is the only JSA member that Beth’s goggles will work for, but she still can’t make the staff glow. However, she’s the only person (other than Courtney and Pat) who’s able to order it around
“Wait, why is she able to order it around?” “Maybe because it knows Yolanda is a boss.”

Dance Dance Detention
An Owl House Story Jane Peterson is working the Spring Formal as a chaperone. Luz and Masha bring their dates together. Luz smiles and Masha laughs. They both think their detentions were worth it.
Notes:
This cute thing popped into my head one day and I knew it would be perfect for a one-hour story.
A station wagon pulled up to the drop-off area and dropped off four teens. Jane recognized Luz and Masha, but had never seen the other two before. Luz was wearing a highly-sequined poofy, pink, purple and blue ombre dress. It took Jane a moment to realize it was probably her quinceañera dress and it took another moment for her to realize it was the bi flag colors. Jane racked her memory, but it was the first time she’d seen Luz in a dress that she could remember.
“Bye, Mom,” Luz said to the driver through the open door and one of the other kids, a girl with greenish-blonde hair with blue tips ran to the driver’s door and hugged Dr. Noceda, and also said, “bye mom.” As this girl stood back from the door, the station wagon pulled out. She wore a long coat with an orange sherbet colored A-Line dress under it. Masha took her hand and they went to the sign-in table first.
“Hi, Masha,” Jane said to them, “who’s your date?”
Masha unbuttoned their coat and Jane saw they wore a tuxedo, but one that had been shaped to them by a good tailor.
“Miss Peterson, this is Vee Noceda,” Masha said, taking Vee’s left hand.
“Nice to meet you, Miss Peterson. Masha said your class is good.” Vee said, holding out her right hand to shake Jane’s.
Jane blinked. Another Noceda; could the school survive?
“I’ve never seen you before; are you related to Luz and Dr. Noceda?”
“Camila’s in the process of adopting me and I’m hoping to start here next year as a junior. Currently I’m catching up with home-schooling. Hopefully I’ll have you for physics or math.” Vee sounded very polite. She and Masha signed in and went into the dance, where music was just starting to ramp up.
Luz and the other girl came up to sign in. Luz was smiling. Jane had hardly ever seen that.
Luz’s date opened her coat, revealing a simple black sheath dress that matched her nail polish.
“Hi, Miss Peterson,” Luz said and signed in. Jane noticed her date’s name was Amity.
“Hi, Amity,” Jane said.
“Oh, hi!” Amity said back. Jane thought Amity looked distracted; she kept looking at everything like she’d never been to a high school dance before.
Amity noticed her looking.
“I’ve never been to a dance before; my mother was really strict, but since the divorce my dad’s trying to broaden my horizons.” She also politely held out her hand to shake Jane’s.
“Amity Blight,” the girl said.
“Miss Peterson,” Jane said. “I’m Luz’s math teacher.”
“Oh! You’re the nice one!” Amity blurted then went red. Luz laughed.
“Yeah, she’s the nice one,” Luz said. Jane smiled. Luz smiled back, again, twice in one day. Luz took Amity’s hand and they also went into the dance. More cars started pulling up and Jane worked the sign-in table until Francis came to relieve her. She took a brief break and then went to see Vice-Principal Prince and get her chaperone duties. She was given perimeter and locker room checks, to make sure kids weren’t going in there and getting up to stuff.
She started her patrols and the dance was really pretty well-behaved. She had to chase Sam Jenkins and his girlfriend out of the boys’ locker room and then she had to kick out and write up a detention slip (and probably a suspension slip, too) for Penn Garcia for bringing in a flask. She gave the flask and the suspension slip to the Vice-Principal then went back to her patrols. She did an outside sweep, making sure to check the benches in the little courtyard between the science building and the temporary classrooms.
She came across Luz and Amity on a bench there, their heads close. She couldn’t tell if they were talking or smooching. As she got closer, it was definitely necking.
“Ahem,” she said loudly and they broke apart, Amity’s cheeks flaming red and Luz looking abashed, but oddly defiant.
“Sorry, you know the rules,” she told Luz and filled out a detention slip for Monday. Luz took the slip, looked at it, smiled, leaned over and kissed Amity again. Amity went stiff for a second, then relaxed into the kiss, which lasted only a few seconds.
Jane sighed, counted to five, and noticed Luz was holding out the detention slip.
“Go ahead and add the second day to it; it was worth it,” Luz said, smiling.
Jane laughed, took the slip and added a second day. She handed it back to Luz.
“It’s good to see you happy, but no more necking or I’ll have to kick you out. Got it?”
They both nodded, stood and went back into the dance.
Jane smiled, laughed again and went on with her patrols. As she came around the corner toward the back of the gym, she found Masha with Vee pressed up against the wall. Vee saw Jane approach, and tried to pull away, but Masha didn’t react fast enough.
“Well, detention for you, Masha,” Jane said, and pulled out her pad.
Masha stepped back from Vee, who had a blue lipstick smear on her neck.
Vee hung her head, and whispered, “sorry,” to Masha. Masha laughed. Luz smiling and Masha laughing: the girls they were dating were good for them.
“Nah, don’t worry, it’s just detention; it’s not so bad.”
Jane handed the slip to Masha, who looked at it, then stuffed it into the pocket of their tuxedo pants.
“Next violation is another detention and being kicked out, so behave, okay?” Jane asked.
Masha laughed again, took Vee’s hand and they disappeared around the corner.
