what happened to dobermanns in the 80s? was there a major shift in what the breed was being used for/bred for? i dont know anything about breeding drama

Yes, mostly that the world kind of got tired of having vicious dogs that couldn't be touched and so passed a whole bunch of aggressive dog laws that outlawed the ability to own a dog that was like that, and so doberman breeders were more or less left with the choice of breed away from original temperament or don't have a breed anymore.

The choice was made to lean hard into a friendly, sociable, everyman's dog that could be touched by anyone. That also sort of failed spectacularly because you can't just create that temperament out of no where and just choosing to breed the dogs that wouldn't bite was ignoring that many of these dogs wouldn't bite because they were too soft and too shy to issue a challenge, not because they were actually *friendly*, which turned the breed into even worse fear biters than they were before and also created this problem still occurring today where dobermans have pisspoor working ability on average and it is difficult to find one who can even do a fraction of the breeds original job of personal protection.

So now we have:

Dogs that are incredible fear biters who are genuinely not safe to own.

Dogs that are incredibly aggressive to humans and thus are genuinely not safe to own.

Dogs that are not biters but also cannot pass the breed's temperament tests because they lack confidence and have had the working ability bred out of them. Great active pets, can't work worth a damn.

Dogs that are OK sport dogs but will never get far. Whether or not they are good pets varies on the individual.

And the very few actually good dogs, that match a modernized version of what the breed can be legally and ethically, but often way too much dog for the average pet person to own.

Don't get me wrong, I think in a good litter you will always have a variety of the last 3. The hope of course is that you get more of the last 1 than any of the others, but you never know. But the damage is done, and now the good dogs are so hard to find, and with this ever growing breed split it will simply get harder and harder. And for what? So we can die on the hill that is ears and tails? Sure I guess.

Hoshiguma - will dick you down exactly how you like it and being held in her big strong arms will make you feel anywhere from safe and protected to primally dominated

Nearl - very sweet and responsive and good at reading your signs so she can give you what you need

hey have you ever seen road rovers? 90s cartoon about dogs who are tranformed into anthropomorphic superheroes and split their time between being superheroes and also the pets of several world leaders? right well one of the main characters is a dobermann pinscher. did you know that dobermann pinschers dont normally have short pointy ears like he has? and usually they have tails longer than little round stubs? right well this means that he had his ears cropped and tail docked. okay, yeah, but more importantly he's from germany.

the practice of cropping ears was banned in 1992 and tail docking banned in 1996, because the practice was considered to be animal cruelty. which means blitz is the only main character who can be considered to have had experienced animal cruelty. this also means that if you rebooted road rovers and wanted to keep his design completely intact you would have to either make him from a different country, or commit to the fact he was illegally cropped + docked. which seems to be usually done for illegal dog fighting? which means he would have to have been a dog used in illegal dog fighting and not merely a junkyard guard dog. and that means it would probably be practical for blitz and muzzle to be combined into one character, but anyways-

i hope this isnt weird to say but i really appreciate your dobeposting, especially about the history & current disposition of the breed. my mom has had dobermans my whole life and it led me to kinda... really dislike them for years, her last three and current youngster all were/are so nervy and quick to bite unprovoked (thankfully the young girl is coming around pretty nicely, no actual aggressive bites, just still learning to take things gently)

anyway, getting to the point, reading you explain about the breed's history, who dobermann actually was & how they were created & what they were originally bred for, and the way unfortunately the temperament has gotten messy due to that mixing of people wanting dobes to be family pet dogs and one-person protection dogs at the same time, or just try to make them into a pet dog they just aren't cut out to be (my mom is very much one of the former lol) really helped me understand and appreciate the breed. my dad has american akitas, and imho they have a similar issue of people trying to breed them for social, cheery pet temperaments which just tends to go very badly for a very large, high aggression, high prey drive, not suited for the average suburbanite breed like them, and realizing dobermans basically have a kind of more severe extent of the same issue (albeit I'm oversimplifying here) really helped me understand them.

i dont think I'd ever choose to have one, but I've definitely got a lot more respect and appreciation from afar.

so, sorry for rambling and probably being repetitive, hope i made some kind of sense, just wanted to say thank you for being a great breed advocate :)

here's a dobe tax, my mom's ~18 month old little girl, kira. she looks like that because, from what the rescue told my mom, she was from a backyard breeder and had to be removed from her first two homes due to mistreatment. still manages to be a real sweetie most of the time

It really sucks because I think dobermans can be fantastic pet dogs... to people who want a doberman and all that entails. But a lot of people in the outcross groups I'm griping about want something more like a gun dog or a retriever in a doberman costume, and it's very frustrating to explain again and again that that simply is not what a doberman is.

I'd be all for a doberman outcross that actually respects what a doberman is for! The problem is that there have been very few of those, and most of them started with junk and ended up fairly lackluster in what they produced because you can't shine a turd and call it gold.

Dobermans don't have to be nervy, loose cannon, fear aggressive, bite risk demons. My doberman is not! My doberman before him was scared, but that was largely a socialization problem caused by living 2 years of her life exclusively in a box, and she wasn't dangerous, she just shut down and shivered. My doberman before her wasn't like this. And my doberman before him was, but again with the known abuse in his background from being a court case dog it's likely that he didn't start out that way and didn't need to become that.

It is possible to have a doberman that is actually a really fun dog to have and be around. You just. Have to understand that they are a doberman. My best friend @khayr has a doberman that's a pet, that does not do any sort of protection work. Her dog is very safe to be around! She's a lovely creature and I think well matched to my buddy's needs. But! She's also a doberman! That means she doesn't like the mailman or the UPS drivers! It means when missionaries knock on her door, her dog throws a fit! It means when she's out late at night and someone rapidly approaches her, her dog puts herself between her and the oncoming stranger! Because she's a doberman! She's supposed to do that!

Im not a dog owner myself but i am very fascinated by your discussion about dog breeds- particularly dobermans of course. What drew me to them is their looks. They just look so very unique and graceful yet still fierce. Im curious about what you think should be done to keep Dobes from just Ending as a breed? I saw your post talking about the two possibilities. (btw if this post would be Bait for other people to jump on your back and harass you then pls dont answer that question, i dont want to cause you any trouble.) Like I said I'm not a dog person so im just talking out of my ass but i personally hope that the dobes dont meet an ultimate end, even if it means they can't be exactly what they were historically. Surely even an outbred dobe line would still be similar to the historical dobe, in looks and somewhat in behavior, do you think?

Until we have an actual answer on what causes DCM, we have zero way of knowing if anything will work. Right now we're trying outcrossing lines and to other breeds. The dogs in these projects are still too young to know if that will help.

Part of the problem with outcrossing to other breeds is that we genuinely have no idea what Karl Louis Dobermann used in the creation of this breed. He caught dogs from off the street and bred the ones that were vicious because he wanted to make a vicious dog that only listened to one master. He wanted, effectively, a living gun. This dog cannot exist in today's world, and looked nothing like the dobermans we have now. We know they were heavily influenced by 'butcher dogs' (rottweilers- swissies were too) and working terriers on the surrounding farmland. We know after his death, right before nazis took over the breed we had greyhound, a now-extinct English terrier, and Manchester terrier added to the mix. A few of these dogs also looked oddly like Beaucerons, but no one ever admitted to that. This formed the look we know to be dobermans, but by then the breed was already plagued by yet-unidentified 'sudden collapse'.

I think probably the best idea would be to recreate the doberman alongside the purebred version, and every once in a while cross the two projects together until they're evenly blended. A mixture of sighthound, herding dog, mastiff, and terrier... and then start combining that with purebred dobermans to see if it all goes to shit the moment these dogs are genetically mostly doberman again. DCM is unpredictable, so all of these 75%, 25%, 50% doberman outcrosses are either ticking timebombs or the salvation the breed's sorely needed. We probably won't know for sure for a few decades. Will it be too late by then?

Can you stand them up without cropping them? It seems a little unnecessary either way, does it have any health benefits?

1- I’m not here to debate the necessity, morality, or ethics of cropping and docking, so please @ followers do not steer this towards that. I am neutral on the debate, I don’t give a shit what your [general you] opinion is, and randomass people on the internets are not going to change my mind.

2- No, if you want a dog from a breed with natural drop ears to have standing ears, the ears must be cropped. There are a small handful of dobermans in history with natural upright ears, and some with upright ears after an injury. The effect is... not attractive.

3- Cropping was once thought to have many health benefits, but nowadays it is primarily a tradition thing and for aesthetic purposes only in the bulk of dogs that exist worldwide. Some dogs, such as big game hunters, livestock guardians, and protection dogs, do have a need to be cropped for injury prevention. However, these crops are very, very short, leaving little-to-no ear on the dog. Not the looooooong crops we see on dobermans today, which could still be grabbed by a criminal intending to injure the dog as it performs its duties. The doberman was originally cropped that short, but as their popularity as a working dog faded and their popularity as a pet and show dog grew, the crop became longer and more stylized.

Overall I think we’ve come a long way since the days of creation and I do prefer the doberman in it’s current form, since the original dogs looked like hideous terrierthings imo. But you can see how the crop (and dock) lengthened over a 120 year period to no longer be the very short working crop of days gone by. I would also rather no one hate on Fifi- she’s a stunning bitch and her owner is rightly proud of her accomplishments.

By contrast, a stunning natural dog is Index, who showcases the correct earset and tail for a doberman that has not been cropped or docked. His ears are medium-sized, triangular drop ears, and as you can see the crease at the top would not allow a dog to normally have standing ears at that size. That is why they would have to be cropped if you desire standing ears.

This bitch came through rescue and has natural standing ears. Because she is a rescue with unknown pedigree, it’s possible that she is not purebred, but it’s very likely that she is indeed 100% doberman considering the rest of her. Her ears are... not really that pretty, and give her more of a goofy look, as well as being very easy to grab and hurt her with, which is why the foundation dogs were cropped so short.
