Taako was having a time. In all honesty, he and Lup were functioning much better than the rest of the crew was. He had seen Magnus break down over a hedgehog yesterday ("Those are Ma's favorite animal!") and it was easy to see past Davenport's "everything is going to be fine". No one had any clue about how to get home. At least Taako and Lup didn't really have a home to return to.

"So you don't miss it?" Lup asked into the quiet of their room. They were two months and three days onto this mission. Upon realization that they were going to be staying much longer than originally planned, Taako had packed up his things from his and Magnus's room and shoved his way into being Lup's roommate like he had originally wanted. Davenport had tried to tell them off, but both Magnus and Lucretia, who used to be Lup's roommate, let them be.

"It's them coping," he had heard Lucretia murmur assuringly to Davenport. "Just give them this."

Coping. Yeah, sure, whatever.

"I miss some things, I guess," Taako said honestly, staring up at their ceiling. Lucretia had put glow-in-the-dark stars up there at some point. "My pillows, for sure."

"The coffee grinder," Lup said wistfully.

"All our cool jewelry."

"My signed Fantasy Whose Line Is It Anyway poster."

"That one big ass rock I found."

"And you know what fucking sucks?" Lup asked, turning towards him on her bed. Taako twisted to met her gaze. "The moment we took off, I finally had a good comeback to that thing Greg Grimaldis said to me like, ten years ago."

"Oh, hell yeah," Taako said. "Lay it on me."

"Okay, remember when he was like, telling me all these awards and shit he had won?" Lup said. "And I was like "nah you're making that up," because it was obviously bullshit."

"Yeah."

"Well listen to this: "Good story, in what chapter do you shut the fuck up?""

"That's-" Taako slapped a hand over his mouth to keep him from laughing too hard. "Lup, that's- wow, uhm-"

"It's great, right?" she said, grinning.

"It's- that's awful, why would you think-"

"You don't appreciate my talent," Lup said. She launched a pillow towards him and Taako didn't even bother to dodge it, cackling against his blanket to try to muffle himself. He didn't need Davenport in here again to tell them to sleep.

"I can't believe we share genetic material," Taako wheezed, which made Lup break into giggles. "You're awful, I hate you-"

"That just means it's really good, though!" Lup said, far too loud for this time of night. "Listen, if you don't value my art, I'll just trade you with Lucretia again. She loves everything I say."

"Go for it!" Taako managed, spreading out one arm in a 'see if I care' way. "At least Magnus has- at least- fuck, I can't even say it-"

"Magnus's comebacks are trash and we both know it," Lup said. Taako furiously wiped the tears from his eyes, trying to pretend like Lup hadn't gotten him to laugh that hard. He took a deep breath and shut his eyes because even just the sight of Lup was making him want to laugh again. They delved back into silence.

"How about-" Lup started after a few moments and Taako choked back another fit of snickers. "I was hoping for a battle of wits but you appear to be unarmed."

"I miss Magnus," Taako bemoaned, which set Lup off, too.

Another scene: Lup wears a white dress, playing her violin.

A compilation of scenes of her Best Day Ever. She eats breakfast in bed, blasts spells with two wands, laughs and shoots a super soaker, and eats dinner with Taako.

She's in lich form, dabbing.

She's a kid, with Taako. One twin holds a kitchen knife, and the other scrubs a plate. They're talking and laughing.

Under the cut: Lup wears beach clothes. She drops her jellyfish shower cap, and steps on it, saying: "Oh no, an invisible demon threw it to the ground. Aw dern!"

The twins stand next to Magnus, a light-skinned human with brown hair. Lup smiles confidently, and asks: "Oh wait let me guess. All of them?"

First Cheat(ish) Day

I’ve only been on the dang diet like 2 days so I absolutely haven’t earned a cheat day, but we had a big family event planned so I did a mini one; I had a Slow Carb breakfast and 90% SC lunch, (plus half a corn cob.)

  I only really cheated at tea, when I had had a scone with jam and clotted cream (I cannot resist a cream tea; the best.) and half a piece of polenta cake, as well as a very small iced coffee with REAL MILK; I’ve been having noticable carb withdrawals the last few days so I didn’t want to go TOO CRAZY and totally undo the work I’ve been doing to detox from them. NEXT cheat day, however... ohhhh you better believe. 

However, that all being said, already on day three I kind of looked at the carb options and wasn’t immediately like “MUST HAVE.” so that’s progress.

A Stolen Century Era TAZ ficlet

It wasn't until the fifth cycle that everyone felt safe enough to fall into the old routines of home.

Lucretia was able to write more than just logs of the day to day life on the ship. Davenport was able to return to the book he had started the night before they left their home. Merle was able to tend to his growing collection of alien plants.

Best of all, the fifth cycle was the first one with seasons that reminded them of home.  With this came winter and most of the crew's favorite holiday - Candlenights. Magnus had chopped down a bush and dragged it into the ship, without too much protest from Davenport, and Merle tasked Barry with helping him create some decorations, looking at Barry in confusion when he suggested they maybe leave the Santa Claus effigy out of their celebrations for the time being. Merle won out, with the support of Lucretia, Davenport, and Magnus, and so they set about decorating the ship.  The twins were oddly absent until the day before Candlenights, but the few times they emerged from their wintery slumbers, they were much nicer than they had been the previous four cycles.

When Merle joked that they were trying to get on Santa's good side,  they would simply nod and quickly change the subject. Only Barry recognized the sense of unease from them.

The day before Candlenights, the crew was mostly snug in their cabins, enjoying the climate control of the ship as a storm raged outside.

Taako was the first to emerge, wiping away the sleep from his eyes as he took a break from his winter hibernation. He entered the common room and blinked taking in his surroundings. Lights, garlands, a Candlenights Bush.

Santa.

Taako's eyes widened in terror as he stared at the effigy of Santa near the center of the room.

“LULU!” Taako screamed. “Oh Gods, Lulu! Come quick!”

Lup scrambled out of their shared room in alarm, ready to take on whoever was hurting her precious brother. She reached the room and froze.

“What in the fresh hell?!” she yelled. “Who the fuck put a Santa in here?”

Barry was the first to emerge, paling when he saw the terrified twins.

“Oh Gods,  I am so sorry Lup - we - I tried to get them to rethink it -”

“Lulu, I thought we were good but we weren't good enough!” Taako sobbed as Lup held onto him, protectively.

“What the hell’s going on?” Merle complained as he rushed into the living room.

“Why the fuck would you put a Santa in here?” Lup cried out.

“We aren't really a hundred yet!” Taako readily confessed. “We lied on our applications! We're only eighty-eight!”

“It's ok, Koko,” Lup soothed, partially for herself.  “Santa is just a scary story! We never got taken and we won't get taken! I promise!”

Lucretia and Davenport rushed in next and took in the scene.

“Um …” Davenport started

“Uh, yeah,” Barry started. “So, I was trying to tell you guys when we were decorating but Santa … he’s not really a joyous symbol for elves. He's more of a  boogey man for elven children,” Barry started.

“When we're young, we're told that we have to be good because every Candlenights, Santa comes looking for naughty young elves to steal and force to spend their childhood working on toys for other creatures,” Lup continued. “Since our childhoods technically end at one hundred years …”

“Twelve years, Lulu! What if we don't get to be in the same workshop? I can't be away from you for that long!”

“I stopped believing in Santa when we were fifty,” Lup explained. “Greg Fucking Grimaldis didn't get stolen after he stole my fifteen dollars so I knew that Santa couldn't be real-”

“But remember our cousin, Burrgor? He was sixty and then one Candlenights, he just vanished!” Taako whimpered.

“Yeah, but he also got caught in a Ponzi scheme, Koko, so he may have just disappeared to avoid getting in trouble,” Lup soothed, shielding Taako's eyes from the monster in the corner of the room. “Can someone please get that fucking thing out of here, please? You may as well have put a spider in Magnus’ room -”

“What?!” Magnus' voice rang out from the doorway.  “Spider?!”

“Gods …” Davenport mumbled as he pinched the bridge of his nose.  “Ok, we'll get rid of the Santa … How did none of this come up when we were putting together crew profiles?”

“I tried to say something,” Barry grumbled under his breath.

As the Santa was chopped up and placed in the fireplace to be torched by Lup, Lucretia hastily noted down this new knowledge about elven culture. It would be a few more cycles before a replacement for Santa would be created and many more cycles until Lucretia had to use this knowledge again on a new world, but for the fifth cycle, the crew simply gathered around the warm, acrid glow of the burning Santa and celebrated as friends.

Idea for a story

I’d like to do a take on Taako and Lup’s relationship, because I have a deep sense that Taako has some resentment/pain about Lup leaving and just. fuck. yeah

Unpopular opinion

Lup’s just as much of a fucking mess as Taako is. They both have abandonment issues. There’s a quote from Fangirl that’s pretty apt where Cath tells Wren “Do you think I’m the only one Mom fucked up when she left? You think that only hit the driver’s side?” (paraphrased) and I think that’s a good description - Lup has different ways of dealing with her shit, but she was a never-alone outcast just as much as Taako ever was.

Blupjeans literally makes me cry whenever I think about it for more than two seconds god it’s the best love story I’ve ever heard

Favorite headcanon

I love the idea that Lup has sensory issues after being trapped in the umbrastaff for ten years, though maybe that’s just me projecting, lol.
