do you think kyojuro ever found out about how his father was towards the end of his career?

for sure! i think the other pillars and ubuyashiki would've tried to keep others from badmouthing the man in front of kyo, but it was inevitable that kyojuro would hear about his father's shortcomings. even if he didn't hear about them, he could certainly figure out what was going on. he lived with shinjuro, saw firsthand as his father's grief twisted him into a stranger. in my opinion, this was kyojuro's biggest motivator to step up as the new flame pillar when he did. his father was crumbling, so he hoped to relieve him of at least a little weight.

in a situation he felt powerless, he did the one thing he thought might actually help.

i don't think it's " living up " to shinjuro's legacy so much as carrying it on ( and initially repairing it maybe ). kyojuro still remembers the man his father was. he remembers his smile, his encouragement during difficult lessons, his warmth. i think kyojuro's memory of who shinjuro was shapes his personality/persona as much as his mother's words do. he not only needs to protect those weaker than him; he needs to be a beacon of light, too. that's what it means to be the flame pillar, and it's what the people around him need. they need someone unwavering and warm, someone they can depend upon physically and emotionally.

this is deviating from the question asdfg but basically!! kyojuro doesn't worry about living up to standards so much as worrying whether the legacy he leaves behind is one others will continue to remember fondly and look to for hope and inspiration in dark times.

listening to welcome to night vale and getting the cecilos romance after listening to the magnus archives and getting jmart is SUCH an experience.
