I don’t really know what to think about all the Internet wrestling chitter-chat about “1984″ and all that (I know what I think of Gabe, Gabe is a pube-bearded coil of hardened turds who deserves to be stuck in the middle seat on a long and turbulent flight while suffering from inflammatory bowel syndrome), but here are the respective cases:

The "1984″ Case: Vince McMahon is a monopolist who yearns for a world in which the words “professional wrestling” are interchangeable with “World Wrestling Entertainment.” Vince pursued this dream in the 1980s by raiding other established wrestling companies for talent in the ring and in the office, precipitating a concentration of the business into essentially two large companies: WWF and WCW, which battled for supremacy throughout the 1990s. In 2001, Vince seemingly achieved his goal by purchasing for pennies on the dollar both WCW and ECW, the only entity that had made a serious attempt to create a third national wrestling company after the fall of the territory system. Today, alarmed by the resurgent popularity of pro wrestling in the United Kingdom and by the growing attention paid to independent and non-US wrestling by prestige media outlets and hip bohemian culture spotters alike, Vince is again seeking to bring the entire wrestling world beneath his giant, ugly umbrella. That’s why he signed all those British wrestlers earlier this year, and why he signed all those cruiserweights last year, and why he’ll sign a bunch of women this year. That’s why he explored buying TNA and ROH. That’s why he signed a bunch of stars away from New Japan. That’s why he’s continuing to let Hunter run the money-losing experiment of NXT. That’s why he’s playing footsie with Evolve. Everything he does is pursued with the ultimate aim of making all wrestling content available only on his paid streaming service, becoming the true monopoly not even the old NWA cartel could manage to be.

The “Starbucks” Case: The counterargument to the conspiracy case, voiced by WWE executives like Triple “Paul” H as well as pro-WWE voices in the indies like Gabe “I’m An Unfuckingbelievable Man-Sized Baby Who Fired Su Yung” Sapolsky, goes something like this: WWE is Starbucks. It’s a gigantic provider of a product with a global brand, seemingly bent on making every cup of coffee a Starbucks cup of coffee, putting small coffee shops out of business in order to maximize revenue. In reality, Starbucks has an indifferent-to-appreciative attitude toward these small shops. They realistically pose no business threat to the corporate giant, but at the same time serve as incubators for new products that can be repurposed and sold by Starbucks (the flat white, for instance, was a drink they took from Australian and Kiwi coffee shops; think of it as the Kevin Owens of espresso drinks), essentially constituting free test marketing for Big Mermaid. At the same time, the omnipresence of Starbucks has cultivated an everyday taste for specialty coffee drinks and related products that would have seemed bizarrely exotic not long ago: if you went just about anywhere in America outside a handful of cities and college towns 20 years ago and asked for a latte, people would have no idea what you meant. Now even rednecks drink lattes. Some of those people become coffee snobs, and start seeking out local, artisanal alternatives to Starbucks, things they never would have thought about before: in this way, Starbucks actually helps the small local shops that serve as idea labs for the corporate giant. It’s a symbiotic relationship that benefits both sides: Starbucks (the WWE) gets a steady stream of new ideas from the small shops/indie feds, who in turn get a small but persistent stream of new customers seeking out alternatives to the big company that created their tastes in the first place.

It’s impossible to know what’s really going on without inside knowledge of WWE’s business strategy, but I’ll say a few things here:

* One, as Gabe “Bungling Dipshit Oaf” Sapolsky accurately notes, there is no comparison, in business terms, between the indies of today and the territory system, let alone the WWF/WCW/ECW triad of the 1990s. In the 1980s, Vince was one large territory among several other large territories, and at the beginning of the decade if you were going to bet on which wrestling promotion could go nationwide for real, the smart money would be on the AWA rather than the WWF. In the 1990s, Vince was running a large corporation in a battle with an even larger, better-resourced corporation, albeit one hampered by a total lack of understanding about professional wrestling. Today, Vince is a white elephant and everyone else is a termite. Sabe Gapolsky may be exaggerating when he says Vince could wipe out the indies in 72 hours (no one will EVER vanquish Juggalo Championshit Wrestling), but they could hire the top 150-200 indie workers for money that would seem a hilarious pittance to the guys they signed away from the territories in the 1980s. The “1984″ case is overplaying its hand by comparing today’s wrestling landscape to the last years of the territory system.

* Two, Starbucks is run by people who are basically reasonable - under the insane definition of “reason” imposed on us by capitalism, anyway - whereas WWE is run by Vince McMahon, a repellent lunatic fueled by an unimaginably corrosive self-hatred that projects outward into a hatred of all living men and women. Vince has spent his whole life trying to get out from his father’s shadow, to become something “more” than a wrestling promoter, and has failed every. Single. Time. He tried to be a concert promoter (failure), then had to humiliatingly ask his father to let him book the WWF’s northern Maine territory; he tried to become America’s first millionaire bodybuilding impressario (failure), a misadventure that ended with a federal criminal trial over the distribution of steroids; he tried to challenge the NFL which, unlike, the NWA, is really a giant, unfathomably powerful cartel, by creating a rival “xtreme” football league (failure), and racked up the worst ratings in the history of broadcast television; and he has been trying, for over a decade, to become a Hollywood mogul by running a movie studio arm that drives his company’s major investors into fits of uncomprehending anger. (Failure). The only thing he’s good at - and he’s better at it than anyone else who’s ever done it - is making money as a wrestling promoter, the thing he hates most. He hates wrestling and hates wrestling fans, but he’s trapped with it, and as death steadily creeps up on his steroid-riddled body, he realizes he will never escape this trap. He is already in hell. His mental state is so bleak it makes Samuel Beckett seem like Kathie Lee Gifford. The idea that he would pursue a live-and-let-live business strategy, a la Starbucks, is hard to fathom: Vince is far more likely to want to crush non-WWE wrestling simply because he knows it will make wrestling fans unhappy. 

I don’t know where this leaves us. In some ways, there has never been a better time to be a wrestling fan, but a lot of this feels very fragile, and has a fin de seicle whiff about it. Indie crowds are vanishingly small, and it’s not hard to imagine another economic downturn wiping out a significant portion of the indie network in the US and elsewhere. WWE will continue doing what it does until Vince dies, when all bets are off. If the present seems crystal-bright, the future is a lot murkier.

In the fall of 1999, Vince McMahon, the outspoken, charismatic head of the World Wrestling Federation, began formulating a plan for a new football league that would directly compete against the NFL. Briefly named the Xtreme Football League, but quickly rebranded as the XFL (the "X" doesn't actually stand for anything, but presumably implies extremeness), the league promised to combine old-school smashmouth football with the over-the-top production elements - like scantily clad cheerleaders and "kayfabe" (staged events that are presented as "real") - that had helped the WWF become wildly popular in the 1980s and 1990s. It would be fun, exciting, and out of the box - a huge contrast to what McMahon called the "No Fun League." Entering a 50/50 partnership with NBC, the old XFL started out with a bang. But the poor quality of play, combined with negative publicity that highlighted the league's emphasis on aggression and titillation, caused momentum to flag. Few people took the XFL seriously as a football league. By the end of the season, TV ratings were in the tank, and both the WWF and NBC had lost millions. When NBC pulled out of its partnership with the WWF at the end of that initial season, the XFL folded. McMahon called the venture a "colossal failure." But now McMahon has resurrected the XFL, with the new incarnation scheduled to begin play in 2020. However, don't expect to see the same type of poor play and over-the-top publicity stunts that populated the old XFL. This time, McMahon claims, the league will be all about the football. The athlete as close to the title of CES, when the 38th event defeated Chris foster, but to enter the battle for the belt was not in time – the athlete will be offered a contract in the UFC.

Signed agreement for four fights, Kattar started with a victory over Andre Fili by unanimous decision. The next encounter Calvin defeated Shane Burgos, who went to a series of 10 consecutive victories, but at UFC 223 ventricu it came to an end – Renato Moicano unanimous decision win at the qattara depression. Ricardo Lamas

Having the status of an all-American athlete, Lamas was a member of the varsity wrestling team and played in the third division of the NCAA. Also, the athlete simultaneously studied Brazilian JIU-jitsu, reaching the discipline of the rank of black belt.

In my early career, Ricardo has performed at the American regional promotions. On the second fight in his career, Ricardo was stronger than cal’s ferry, taking his ISCF title belt. For a promising athlete started to follow many famous organizations, and the first major contract Lamas signed with the WEC promotion. At that time, his record stood at 5-0 weighty.

The first fight in the WEC the Lamas succeeded. Bart Palchevskogo Ricardo defeated by unanimous decision, loudly announcing himself, but in the following fight, could not cope with Danny Castillo, losing him a technical knockout. Closing defeat with three consecutive wins, Lamas lost again. This time, his abuser was Yuri Alcantara. Despite the defeat in an extreme match, Ricardo became a signatory to the UFC.

Career Lamas in the best promotion on the planet can hardly be called successful. Seven extreme fighting Ricardo gave a modest 4-3. He lost to max Holloway, but he was stronger than Charles Oliveira, Diego Sanchez and Darren Elkins in an extreme match.

Meiko Satomura and More Confirmed for WXW's Femmes Fatales In October

Months ahead of their next planned all-female lineup, Westside Xtreme Wrestling has revealed some of the names set to compete at the show. The show, Femmes Fatales, is sandwiched in between the October 5th-7th dates the promotion has alotted for their World Tag Team League, which takes place over a course of three days in Oberhausen, Germany. Femmes Fatales will be running in the same building on October 6th. One the first competitors advertised as part of the event’s official announcement is the current Fight Club: Pro Champion, Meiko Satomura. The promotion has released a brand new flyer, which now includes the likeness of Killer Kelly, Wesna Busic and the reigning WXW Women’s Champion, Toni Storm.

#XFL2020: Welcome to Make Football Great Again!

Yesterday, WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon announced that the XFL will be returning in 2020. Splashed with the league's revitalized and actually less “xtreme” logo behind it, McMahon gave a cryptic announcement almost as bizarre looking as Donald Trump's following the Access Hollywood tape revelation. But the reality here is that McMahon's desire to bring back the XFL caters to both he and Donald Trump's interests and that this new XFL will be in no way like the old one.

In order to look back at the history of the XFL, it's only really necessary to watch one game: the first one. This game actually drew high ratings when it premiered and I re-watched it a few months ago because I sometimes have nothing better to do than remember the XFL.

The problem with the XFL was that McMahon couldn't get himself away from his WWE roots. Immediately, The Rock is cutting a promo to introduce the league. At 17:30, quarterback Ryan Clement and a team cheerleader cut easily the most awkward promo I've ever seen likely because Ryan Clement is a quarterback who has never cut a promo and the cheerleader is a cheerleader who has never cut a promo and they likely just met that day and now have to try to sell what’s basically a sketch with sexual overtones. By the end of this game, McMahon removed young play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian (who shed off this horrible experience to become a respected announcer who just joined ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball team) from the main broadcasting team for his refusal to make “enthusiastic commentary” about the cheerleaders dancing with men in the crowd (go to 40:14 in the video to hear Vasgersian wait for 15 seconds before saying “I feel uncomfortable”). As much as McMahon wanted the league to be tougher and crazier, he went backwards in allowing the XFL to be like the “Attitude Era,” and not surprisingly, there are a chunk of football fans and Americans who have no interest or even scoff at pro wrestling. Where McMahon deserves credit is that concepts like the X Cam and cameras in locker rooms are now used in the NFL and have become the norm.

Why is the XFL returning when it was perhaps only less embarrassing for McMahon than the Val Venis “choppy choppy your pee pee” storyline on RAW? McMahon sees an opening with the general public's anger in America let alone towards the National Anthem. He also has always long been poised to upend the NFL and seek revenge for this XFL loss. However I think it lies much deeper than that.

McMahon and Trump have obvious ties dating back to the 1980s. They rivaled each other in a “Battle of the Billionaires” match at Wrestlemania 23. Linda McMahon, Vince's wife, donated $7 million to pro-Trump PACs and was ultimately chosen to lead the Small Business Administration under the Trump administration. Over the past year, Trump went on the attack against the NFL and professional athletes in other sports over kneeling during the National Anthem or not visiting the White House. In the same way that “Make America Great Again” found an audience among angry whites feeling they've lost whatever America they feel they grew up in or expect it to be so too does the XFL likely feel it could hit these same people and others in its return.

It's no coincidence that the XFL will kick off in 2020. Yes, McMahon's first incarnation was haphazardly put together so he can posit this 2020 kickoff as being related to taking the right amount of time to get a proper league in place. But it also makes sense that the XFL will arrive just in time for Trump's re-election campaign where this National Anthem controversy will still be in the President's back pocket to bring up. McMahon's commentary already appealed to the base. A coded phrase like “family friendly” means players will definitely stand for the anthem. The WWE has long pushed itself as an organization tied to veterans and the military and so the XFL will continue to do that as well. McMahon even used the phrase “conservatively” in his announcement. While McMahon says the league will be “fan first,” that likely just means that the league will primarily appeal to fans that side with Trump's perspective and hope to grab independent football viewers purely interested in the entertainment of the game. 

The XFL has really no plans in place other than this announcement and it hasn't decided which cities it will be in. It's a little odd since the XFL did exist and has some kind of a history where perhaps it would return to the same cities and teams it once had. But I believe that the XFL is aligning itself politically as well so I would not be surprised if a majority of the cities that get selected are in historic swing states on the electoral map. It allows for Trump 2020 and #XFL2020 to work hand-in-hand. I would expect at least New York or Los Angeles to get a team since they are the biggest markets in the nation and can appeal to the coasts. But then I believe the remaining cities will be selected from a pool along these lines: Las Vegas, Denver, a Florida city, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Detroit, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Charlotte. It caters to the major cities of swing states. It also makes the XFL feel more like a Midwest and South league which is both in McMahon's wheelhouse given the history of wrestling was based in territories and those areas of the nation have some of the biggest popularity when it comes to wrestling and a platform for Trump's re-election.

It's a nice notion that McMahon sees this league as “fan first” but any wrestling fan can tell you that McMahon has never been about the fans. He's about the dollar signs associated with the fans but not necessarily fan perspective. It took undersized Daniel Bryan pretty much winning over every fan to have Vince grant him with the WWE title. Vince turned the WWE more “family friendly” to appeal to his wife's Senate candidacy than he did with what wrestling purists would have liked. The music choices for Wrestlemania and some of the other PPVs have always seemed years behind relevancy. Vince is still Vince and the XFL is more “Make Football Great Again” than it is something that will provide a forward-thinking alternative to the football fan.

Nevertheless, I'm likely going to watch Week One much like I did with the first incarnation of the XFL. That's what McMahon knows he can grab at: the regular football fan interested in at least seeing what the carnival event has to offer. That first game in 2001 was so bad that I didn't watch the league again (and neither did so many others as ratings tanked almost immediately). Could it win me and other football fans over? It's possible but the league would have to address the biggest issues for football fans that actually care: be safer and have an actual concussion protocol that gets followed, have disciplinary action that makes sense especially in cases of domestic violence, don't make fans feel like they are dollar bills that don't matter, have some forward-thinking ideas for the game that contrast the NFL, and produce an entertaining product. Is the XFL likely to do that? Decades of history of how the WWE has operated makes me think it won’t happen. 

The XFL happened in large part because McMahon was able to work alongside longtime friend Dick Ebersol to put it on NBC. There is no way in hell that NBC will be putting the XFL on their air again because of the embarrassment of it the first time and now Trump's commentary and criticism of the network. So it seems likely that the XFL will devolve to being aired on FOX News or some other such network as evidenced by FOX News already covering the XFL announcement and caring about the National Anthem issue. If you wanted to win over football fans that care like myself, this isn't the way to do it. I don't want to watch football that was the dream of Rush Limbaugh just like I don't want to watch football that was the dream of Gloria Steinem. I just want to watch football that appreciates and advances the game, a game which has many current issues that make me not particularly happy with myself that I’m supporting it. 

I expect there to be few if any remnants of what the XFL once was in this new version. The last one was an embarrassment to McMahon and so he won't do anything to connect these two. But, personally, as an unbiased football fan, I expect this new XFL to be an embarrassment in a different way: as a wing to an initiative of a presidential re-election campaign.

17 years of More Than Wrestling - A visualization of wXw shows

Tomorrow (December 23rd), westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) will hold its annual anniversary event - the 17th anniversary show, to be precise. Given that wXw has been my home promotion whose shows I have attended throughout the last 12 years (yikes) and that has allowed me to see countless legendary wrestlers and great matches, I wanted to dig into their history a bit. For this, I will focus just on shows - there’s a lot more data one could look into given enough resources and time (wrestlers, records, venues, ...), but this will have to do for now.

[The typical disclaimer: The data for this analysis was scraped from Cagematch.net - sorry about that, guys. I of course cannot guarantee that their records are complete or (more likely) that I screwed up when processing them somehow, so there may be some errors in here.]

All in all, I tracked 487 wXw shows. That includes episodes of wXw’s Shotgun show, of which Cagematch has tracked over 300 episodes.

First, let’s look at the distribution of these 487 ‘regular’ shows over the years:

The thing that sticks out to me here is the strong increase in frequency beginning in 2014 and intensifying in 2015 and after. Since 2015, wXw has run more than one show per week on average, which highlights an impressive growth with no signs of slowing down. We’ll look at how that growth has been achieved later.

Looking at the distribution of shows over the months highlights a peak of activity in Spring and Autumn, and a bit of a down-turn over the summer and in the winter. This can be partly explained by wXw staple events - 16 Carat in March and the Triangle League/World Tag League shows in Match and October, accounting 3+ shows in the matter of a few days.  

In recent years, wXw has started running event tours, in which they visit a bunch of different cities throughout Germany. If we look at the monthly distribution for just the last three years which have seen the highest number of shows, a clearer pattern becomes obvious with a pronounced summer break, in particular in July.

Looking at the number of shows by country unsurprisingly reveals that Germany is and continues to be wXw’s home base, but also highlights that they have made quite a few international excursions, such as their 2012 tour in Japan and their visits to the United States in 2010 and 2011. Since 2015, wXw has made yearly trips to the UK.

Further, it becomes clear that Oberhausen is and remains the home of wXw, hosting by far the most wXw events. While wXw promoted almost exclusively in the area for many years, it has recently branched out and added other key cities like Hamburg and Dresden to its schedule. Essen as the birthplace of wXw is also still represented prominently. A fun little easteregg here is the ‘secret’ location for wXw’s 18+ Underground shows that were held in a location not publicly disclosed.

Earlier, I talked about the huge increase in the number of shows since 2014 and promised to dig into this further. Now it’s time to do that. Let’s look only at German shows for now, and look at how they are distributed over the years and the different German states (Bundesländer) in which they took place:

Now, everybody who has followed wXw over the years could have told you that they were primarily, almost exclusively based in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) early on and started expanding and touring all over Germany in the last years. The above graph confirms that, and I was really surprised at how pronounced of a change this has been. In the course of this nation-wide expansion, wXw has promoted events in all but two states - Schleswig-Holstein and the city state of Bremen.

If you look at NRW only, there has been a small increase in the number of shows in recent years, but the overall growth of shows can be explained almost exclusively by these additional states that wXw now runs in. While NRW was the exclusive home of wXw for years, it has hosted less than half of shows since 2015, again showcasing the impressive expansion of wXw in that time.

I also tried to identify some recurring special events. The below list is far from complete - there is e.g. also the now-yearly World Tag League, it’s (sort-of) predecessor of the Triangle League, and recurring yearly signature events like Broken Rulz or Back to the Roots. Obviously, 16 Carat is the most famous and important of these events, but there are also a bunch of other noteworthy special events like the shoot-style Ambition series, the more mainstream-oriented Superstars of Wrestling, and the Femmes Fatales tournaments. 

Finally, let’s look at one more thing close to my heart - wXw shows in Essen, which is both the birthplace of wXw and of myself. It’s the place where I discovered wXw, went to my first wrestling show, saw Kenta Kobashi, and made many great memories. Hence, it holds a special place in my heart. After being the almost exclusive home of wXw for many years, wXw had to stop promoting in it in 2007 after being banished from running events there. Oberhausen took Essen’s place. So to me at least, it was really nice to see them finally return to Essen after a seven year absence with their new regular wXw Academy shows.

Since wXw started in Essen, it’s only to appropriate to end this post on that topic too. Happy birthday, and onto the next years!

For those of you that don't remember, The XFL was a football league started by a wrestling organization! The X apparently stood for Xtreme, which is for sure not a word! This should have been an indication of the quality of the sports on the field! Also there was a thing where you were inside the cheerleaders locker room which was also fudged up! Anyway, players were allowed to put whatever they want on their jerseys! And you put the phrase "He Hate Me" on your's! To the consternation of syntax nerds everywhere! It was dumb and weird and harmless and probably the best thing about the terrible XFL!
