By the end of my original story, one of my amputee characters (below-the-knee) will take a sort of break from using their prosthetic leg.
This prosthetic had a hybrid foot (similar to the Cheetah Xplore, by Össur) so that they could both run and walk, since they fought a lot, albeit not very comfortably.
Once there's no need for fighting anymore, they can get a new prosthetic (money isn't a problem in this scenario), but choose to think it over for a while.
They already used crutches to move around when they didn't use their prosthesis before, but I was wondering if it would be alright for them to choose to get a wheelchair instead of a new prosthetic (or both, with the prosthetic being more of a backup) once the story is coming to an end.
I haven't found a lot of sources on one-leg amputees using wheelchairs, especially below-the-knee, so I was wondering if it is accurate. They would still use their crutches to get around a lot, but I feel like this character has grown sort of tired of using a prosthetic (both them and their peers were sort of neglected by their mentors for a long time, having to fight a lot, meaning they also wore their prosthetic more frequently than they should), so it feels right to me for them to opt for a break.
Hi!
I think this is fine. If a wheelchair is the best aid for them, then that's okay, even if it's not necessarily common for their disability.
It sounds like they have multiple aids, which is pretty accurate for many disabled people. There are situations where they might prefer their wheelchair over crutches. If they're dealing with some upper body fatigue, or if their other leg is injured, for example, a wheelchair may be a better option than crutches, especially for long distance.
Even if there's no specific reason why a wheelchair is better for them than crutches, it's simply a matter of personal preference. There are benefits and drawbacks to every aid, and if they decide a wheelchair is best for them, then that is their choice.

Chemists and engineers from China, the United States, and the U.K. are working on efficient ways to generate energy from low-speed wind, providing a new way to capture power beyond the sails and wind turbines that require higher speeds, according to a report from Tech Xplore.
If successful, it could provide a way to harvest wind energy during lulls that leave turbines motionless.

Just showed my parents the scenes of Luke from the book of boba fett episode and afterwards, I shared pictures of Graham Hamilton and why there shouldn’t have been CGI to cover his face.
They completely agreed. They grew up with the originals, and while we all watched the sequels, they understand the right version of Luke Skywalker. That’s why I keep writing all my fics surrounded in the bamboo forest. That episode means so much to me and fills me with so much happiness.
Maybe this is just me being delusional, but I’m here for it. 🤣

New framework designs scalable 3D transistors based on 2D semiconductors
Conventional electronics based on silicon are approaching their limits in terms of performance and scalability. In recent years, engineers have thus been trying to introduce alternative designs that could help reduce the size of electronic components while also improving their speed and energy efficiency. Researchers at the University of California- Santa Barbara have devised a new framework that could contribute to this quest, enabling the fabrication of scalable three-dimensional (3D) field-effect transistors (FETs) based on two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors. Their proposed approach, outlined in Nature Electronics, accounts for key factors that can influence the performance of these transistors, including so-called Schottky contact effects and inclusive capacitance. "Our research group was among the early contributors to emphasize the importance of a multi-gate architecture for achieving realistic sub-10 nm FETs, even with atomically-thin channels based on 2D semiconductors," said Kaustav Banerjee, senior author of the paper, in an interview with Tech Xplore.

Ford said U.S.-based businesses will lose out on “tens of billions of dollars” in new revenues as a result of Ontario’s response.
“We just aren’t going to be using American companies,” Ford said. “And no matter if we are building a hospital, if we’re building anything, if we’re building a dog house I want to make sure we are using Ontario steel, Canadian products, Canadian wood, Ontario wood, anything.
“I don’t care if it’s a toothpick. We need to purchase from Canada and Ontario.”
“Canada didn’t start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we’re ready to win it,” said Ford, who called an election for his province last week.
Ford said he wants a four year mandate that outlasts Trump’s term.
“He wants to come after us?” he asked. “I’ve yet to hear one American citizen say Canada is the problem.”
“This is a tax on American citizens. That’s what Donald Trump is doing to his own people,” said Ford, who described Musk as part of the Trump team “that wants to destroy families incomes, destroy businesses. He wants to take food off the table of hard working people and I’m not going to tolerate it.”
Trump responded Sunday, criticizing Canada’s trade surplus with the United States and contending that without that surplus, “Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!”

It was reported by Infrastructure Ontario in January last year that only two satellite internet service providers were capable of meeting the coverage needs of Ontario – Musk’s SpaceX, which runs Starlink, and Xplore Inc, a rural Canadian service. Both were invited to participate in a bidding process, with SpaceX ultimately securing the slot.
The contract, first signed in November, aimed to provide high-speed internet access through Starlink’s satellite service to 15,000 eligible homes and businesses, notably those in remote, rural and northern communities of Canada, by June 2025.

University of Florida develops AI-powered MRI tool to improve Parkinson’s diagnosis
Tumblr media
- By InnoNurse Staff -
University of Florida researchers have developed Automated Imaging Differentiation for Parkinsonism (AIDP), a machine-learning method using MRI to accurately distinguish Parkinson’s disease (PD) from atypical parkinsonian disorders such as multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
In a multicenter study involving 249 prospective and 396 retrospective cases, AIDP analyzed diffusion MRI data from 132 brain regions, achieving 96–98% accuracy in differentiating PD, MSA, and PSP.
Compared to traditional clinical methods, AIDP improved diagnostic accuracy by 12.3%, reaching 93.9% accuracy against autopsy-confirmed cases.
Its non-invasive, scalable approach could enhance clinical care and complement existing biomarkers.

Well I completely disagree with you. While sharing every single full video would be wrong, sharing smth small is literally not a big deal and it’s nobody’s waste of money. If anything it can even invite someone to that website, if they find the clip interesting.
With that being said. Snc whole brand is surrounded by them making money out of everything. Merch, videos, main channel, react channel, website etc etc. it really won’t hurt their wallets or anyone else’s if someone shares a 15 seconds clip from their website. People are anyway still signing for it, moreover the clip can as i said bring some new people (usually people do not like pay money for something blindly, so in a way those people helps them advertise it… and let’s face it… that members is not cheap), nobody will loose their money that they invested in that website, just bc some user4729$3 decided to share a few seconds clip from xplore. And just to be clear, i don’t really give a damn how snc make their money and how much they have it or wants to have, but because we live in tough times where not all of us have the same opportunities, then being mad as a person that was lucky enough to be born within a family that gave you a roof, food, phone, television and money for your own better future (like better education or even some connections for better job) at people who decided to share A FEW SECONDS CLIP is just stupid. Whether you are a member or not, being mad at such a short clip is stupid, especially that those clips aren’t something idk private or something completely different that snc do. There are really bigger problems on this world than a 15 seconds clip from xplore.com roaming around Twitter
look, i feel like i explained myself enough in my previous response to you. personally, i don't get why you are upset at ppl being upset when others share stuff from a site that clearly you aren't on or apart of since you continue to get the site's name wrong.
and if there are more important things to talk about going on in the world, why are you talking about this? just asking.
when you sign up for the site, you literally agree to NOT SHARING anything from it. otherwise you could get banned. it's really that simple. but hey, you do you. play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
not only that, but as someone that does pay for the site, i don't want to see shit from the site leaked onto twitter or tiktok or insta or any other platform. the entire point of the content is that it is exclusive. meaning that NOT EVERYONE IS MEANT TO SEE THE CONTENT. ppl are going to be excluded, that is the entire point of the platform. and as i stated before, i am by no means rich or well off. i literally live below the poverty line, almost lost my house multiple times, and will most likely have to start working a second job bc i do not make enough to get by whatsoever. that being said, if i couldn't afford it, i wouldn't expect someone to share the info with me just bc i'm a fan of snc. you're not owed exclusive content just bc you're poor and a fan of snc. sorry, that's just the way it is. it isn't life or death information. it's just random fucking videos.
and bffr, if you are someone that is struggling that much; can't afford a house, food, a job, a higher education, and have a shitty fucking family…. i highly doubt you give a single flying fuck about snc or xplrclub. you have bigger fish to fry.
also snc have almost 13 mil subs and advertise xplrclub regularly on their videos. they don't need free promo lmao

Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.

Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.

The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself.  If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.

Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status:  'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading
StripedFly is a complex platform disguised as a cryptominer and evaded detection for six years by using a custom version of EternalBlue exploit, a built-in Tor network tunnel, and trusted services like GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket to communicate with C2 servers and update its functionality.
iPhones have been exposing your unique MAC despite Apple's promises otherwise - Ars Technica
A privacy feature which claimed to hide the Wi-Fi MAC address of iOS devices when joining a network was broken since iOS 14, and was finally patched in 17.1, released on Wednesday.
Note: I imagine this bug was reported a while ago, but wasn’t publically reported until the fix was released as a term of apple’s bug bounty program.
What the !#@% is a Passkey? - Electronic Frontier Foundation

HI SO UH MY INTERNET KIND OF KIND OF DIED SO HERE HAVE SOME NOTES
CHAPTER:1-4 NOTES;
-Sun/Moon have been powered off for a long while in the abandoned, child AND adult infested stage 1-3(Maybe bloater?) pizzaplex (Stalkers found in utility tunnels, Clickers and walkers roam around the main areas; Safe spots are Daycare, Main fours rooms, P&S, security rooms, hiding spots from security breach game too.)
-Y/N Thought that the Pizzaplex by now would be empty and raided, but looked through anyway for materials
-Finds a Mushroom-covered Sun/Moon (Design ideas go brr♥♥♥)
-While running from zombies Y/N accidentally finds their room, trips over a wire and turns them on
-Hey look a new pal!!
-Sun/Moon accompany them with no knowledge about the world, their wires and metal has been frayed, rusted, and worn (Possible missing arm? Would prove to be more a challenge, also so they just don't go plowing through the infected without a care in the world)
-Clothing has slowly begun to decay and has started to be eaten by moths (They eat clothing!!!)
-Casing is mushroom covered, they were also found by mushroom-covered corpses of children♥♥♥♥ (Im just so cool like that)
-Sun and moon are Traumatized by this fact (More of sun, less of Moon lol)
-Moon maybe still has virus?? would be funny (Doing it)
-Yes, they, sun and moon, can get ripped apart by a bloater, but not walkers or stalkers; Clickers are harder to combat, and with groups of clickers they can be heavily damaged, Even if Clickers are easier to sneak up on for them
-Y/N Doesn't trust the animatronic at all, even as they decide to tag along and help Y/N get out of the pizzaplex
-After a long while of being trapped in the pizzaplex They finally get out and even as Y/N doesn't trust Sun and Moon still, they allow them to continue to tag along, seeing as they can't get infected; They want to find Fazbear and gang, and what do you know, reader knows where that is and is going the same way
-Y/N is immune but cleverly keeps it a secret incase they find other people
-the way y/n could find out they are immune is one of these gas masks failing at a critical moment in one of these zones and everything turns out fine for them.
-there could also be high activity spore zones in areas with foliage present such as the monty gator golf area which is why a mask would be required before I xploring those areas perhaps there would be freddy fazbear branded gas masks as they could be one of the areas in lore that got a preemptive heads up before outbreak began to begin evacuation. (These are only like a few notes lol but here you go)
DUDE!???
THIS SOUNDS SO COOL

New ferroelectric device performs in memory calculations and could boost energy efficiency for edge computing
Tumblr media
- By Nuadox Crew -
A new study in Nature Communications introduces a device called an in-memory ferroelectric differentiator that can do calculations right inside the memory itself.
This means it doesn’t need a separate processor, which saves a lot of energy—especially useful for devices like smartphones, self-driving cars, and security cameras.
Most computers today use a design where memory and processors are separate. This setup wastes energy and slows things down because data constantly has to move back and forth. The researchers solved this by using ferroelectric materials, which can store data even when the power is off and create electric signals when their internal structure changes.
They built a tiny 40×40 grid made up of 1,600 of these materials, which lets the device act as both memory and processor. It can handle tasks like motion detection and video analysis directly in memory, without needing extra steps.
This device is also extremely energy-efficient, using just 0.24 femtojoules per calculation—up to a million times more efficient than today’s CPUs or GPUs.
Since it works with current chip technology and can be scaled up, it could lead to big improvements in edge computing and real-time tasks like processing medical signals or even solving math problems directly in hardware.

Proof that Graham Hamilton should be the “new” younger version of Luke Skywalker. Inspired by @tabrisshiki post that I saw earlier today.
I will take no questions. This man IS Luke Skywalker and I really hope he gets the torch passed to him from Mark. And I literally am planning a fic just for my appreciation love for Graham and perfect he is for Luke.
