Enchanted Portals to be published by Perp Games

Perp Games will publish Xixo Games Studio-developed hand-drawn cooperative side-scrolling platformer Enchanted Portals, the companies announced. Perp Games did not announce platforms, but the game was previously slated for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC, and both PlayStation Store and Steam pages recently went live.

The first Instagram upload, incredibly basic design and way subpar execution. It's not especially great. About the history: I found out about Enchanted Portals by Xixo Games Studio, the game that was collectively hailed as a Cuphead ripoff/bootleg by the Internet. While watching its Kickstarter Trailer, I was mesmerized by the witch boss (appearing about 0:29, trailer below), thought the character was cool and decided to draw it.

I've been making digital stuff for over a month (horrible of course), wanted to put it somewhere, and knowing there's going to be some following for this witch online for sure, I made this piece and my account. This upload did nothing, but I started tinkering more with drawing software and kept uploading more artworks.

I really like this version, think it's a good remake, the difference is night and day. Like the hair and details on the hat. And gotta keep the grin, it's the first upload after all.

My problem with this whole controversy is that Cuphead being a Run n’ gun game doesn’t really do much with its mechanics and uses the bare minimum for that genre so no matter what Danny and Gemma used to make this game they would still be labeled as a Cuphead rip-off even though the mechanics showed off in this trailer are utilized in literally every run n’ gun game to ever exist. But even still all of these designs are original with there own ideas, gags, and attacks, having a Beethoven inspired boss taking place on a giant piano and having a boss based on “The Frog Prince” are EXTREMELY creative ideas what do you have to be smoking to think these guys are creatively bankrupt. (*sigh*) Ok look, even though I absolutely adore Cuphead as it’s my favorite game of all time this type of Animation takes so much effort, dedication, and money for Danny and Gemma (the creators of Enchanted Portals) just wanting to make a fan game.

The backgrounds are quite vibrant and attractive overall, and it seems like there will be a wide assortment of bosses to combat in co-op battles. From the hand-drawn style to the seeming exclusive emphasis on boss fights, it just screams “derivative.” Take a look for yourself. Put another way, it’s the GoBots to Cuphead‘s Transformers. Xixo Games Studio is a two-team Spanish studio that is currently working on Enchanted Portals. Just like Cuphead, Enchanted Portals is a 2D, side scrolling, run and gun game with old-school cartoonish graphics. It does look like a reskinned Cuphead and since the release of the trailer there has been a huge backlash.

Even so, I have to admit the game looks pretty good. Usually re-skins do not look great compared to the original, however, this one looks very well done. While I understand the frustration, I wouldn’t mind if  someone re-skinned one of my favorite games, as long it is good.

From my perspective the game will probably help the specific genre grow even more. I mean if this game ends up being great, then people who did not know Cuphead, will probably check it out. Of course this is only my opinion since I have no idea how these things actually work.

Enchanted Portals is about a pair of rookie magicians who are trapped between dimensions and need to fight against funny bosses to recover the pages of the magic book so they can safely return home.
